Yes, smoothies are healthy, fun, delicious, and quite colorful, especially this recipe. This smoothie looks more like a drink you’d order while lounging by the pool on vacation more than a healthy, immune boosting smoothie. Not only is this drink visually stunning, but it also provides a long list of nutrients, many of which optimize immune function. Plus, this smoothie aims to use some fall and winter produce items, such as blood oranges and beets.

The real kickers in this smoothie are the cayenne, raw ginger, and turmeric. These three ingredients exhibit anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties. Sounds like everything you need to make it out of cold and flu season unscathed, right? While this smoothie may not be the magic shield that blocks all viruses and bacteria, it does provide nutrients that help boost the immune system. Beets, oranges, lemons, mangos, and raspberries offer an assortment of nutrients, including vitamins A & C, antioxidants, fiber, folate, nitrites, beta-carotene, and polyphenols.

Unlike other smoothies, you have to blend this smoothie in two batches. Firstly, you blend the yellow ingredients, pour the mixture into two glasses, and then rinse the blender out. Add the remaining red ingredients to the clean blender and blend until smooth. Pour that mixture into the glasses and you will see a tie die concoction in your smoothie glasses. If you start your day off with a cup of this smoothie, your immune system will thank you. Plus, you get to feel like a bartender at a fancy resort blended up something special for you when you look at it!

Could this be your new favorite green smoothie recipe? Although this smoothie brims with leafy green goodness, it tastes very delicious. It doesn’t taste like a garden! The bananas, papayas, and tangy lime juice bring this smoothie to life. It really livens your taste buds and each sip keeps you coming back for more.

The great thing about a green smoothie is that you can choose the leafy greens you want to use. This smoothie may call for spinach, but feel free to use kale or chard if you have those greens instead. A quick reminder about kale and chard: they are more bitter than spinach, especially if you include the stems. Make sure to remove the thick, fibrous stems from these types of greens to make the flavor of your smoothie more appetizing. Spinach is a great leafy green, especially for green smoothie novices, because you can’t really taste it even though it turns the entire smoothie green.

The bottom line when it comes to green smoothies is: don’t let the green scare you away. It may look like it doesn’t taste incredible, but don’t judge a smoothie by the way it looks. You have to take a big swig of that nutrient-dense, blended concoction before you make up your mind. Who knows? This may be a smoothie you come back to over and over again. Plus, this recipe makes two servings, so you can have one now and one later! Sharing with another person is also an option.

As you may know by now, green smoothies are the easiest ways to obtain a plethora of essential nutrients in one go. You can also sneak more green vegetables into your diet via green smoothies. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, however, drinking too many cold beverages, especially during cold weather, can disrupt the natural energy in the body (known as chi).

Chi translates to life force or energy, and dampening this energy can adversely affect the way the body functions. Traditional Chinese Medicine attributes cold water to chilling the digestive fire. By that hypothesis, drinking a smoothie that contains frozen fruit may have a similar effect, causing bloating, stomach pain, or other digestive complications.

The body has the natural ability to generate heat, but this ability may be impaired if you continuously cool down your energy or chi. This doesn’t mean that you should stop drinking smoothies; rather, there are a few simple tricks that can help you avoid digestive troubles. If you want to improve digestion and are the type of person who gets cold easily, especially during the colder months, try employing the following tweaks to your smoothies during winter.

Think About The Energetics Of Food

A fun fact is that foods that take longer to grow (e.g. winter squash or collard greens) are more warming than foods, which grow quickly. Lettuce and summer squash, for example, grow quickly and may have a cooling effect on the body.

Pass On Tropical Fruits

The allure and bright flavors of tropical fruits makes it difficult to omit them from your smoothies. According to Ayurveda, tropical fruits like mangos and bananas are more cooling than fruits like apples and pears, which are grown in temperate zones.

Add Healthy Fats To Smoothies

There are great fats to use that help to fill you up and warm the body up at the same time. Great healthy fats to use include hemp seeds, pea protein, nuts, avocado, almond butter, and coconut oil.

Add Warming Ingredients

We don’t mean that you should heat up your produce in the microwave before making your smoothies. Just as Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that certain foods have cooling properties, other foods have warming properties. We’ve compiled a list of warming ingredients, which you can add to your winter smoothies, below.
