As you prepare to soak up the sun during the upcoming summer season, make sure that you protect your skin from the sun’s rays. You’ve likely seen more sunscreen sprays and lotions available with summer on the horizon. Maybe you looked at a few, but didn’t think it was close enough to summer to splurge on sunscreen. Did you know that traditional sunscreen may pose a threat to your skin and the environment? Natural sunscreen is not only effective, but also great for your skin and environmentally friendly.

Natural sunscreens use mineral-based ingredients like titanium oxide or zinc oxide to block the sun’s rays. These types of sunscreens contain ingredients that are gentler on the skin. They also provide more moisture without irritating the skin, which means you are less likely to experience a reaction. Chemical-based ingredients, on the other hand, absorb UV rays instead of blocking them. These ingredients have been known to cause skin allergies or irritation in young and sensitive skin.

Natural sunscreen also provides broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. That means that they have higher sun protection factor (SPF), so you can soak up the sun for longer without needing to reapply every hour. You still have to reapply natural sunscreen for optimum skin safety, though. Let’s take a closer look at some of this recipe’s ingredients below.

Zinc Oxide

This is the mineral of choice when it comes to blocking UVA and UVB sun rays. One study found zinc oxide to be effective against a broad range of solar spectrum in experimental models and outdoor settings. It is the only active ingredient in sunscreen that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for infants under six months. Most commercial sunscreens that don’t leave a white residue use nano-sized zinc oxide. Unfortunately, one study found that nano-sized zinc oxide absorbs easily into the skin and can cause unknown problems. Nanoparticles of both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide may cause potential photocarcinogenecity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity.

Carrier Oils

Not only do carrier oils work to condition the skin and help improve moisture content, but some of them also provide SPF qualities. Great choices include coconut oil, carrot seed oil, mango and cocoa butters, and avocado oil. The SPF value of avocado oil, coconut oil, and olive oil sit around 8, while almond oil sits around 5. Most nonvolatile oils sit between an SPF value of 2 and 8. That means that olive oil and coconut oil have the best SPF values, which is helpful when it comes to selecting carrier oils in the formulation of sunscreens. For this recipe, you will only need coconut oil and shea butter, both of which offer sufficient SPF value.

Natural Sunscreen Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
  • 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide powder (non nano!)
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder (this will vary according to skin tone, but test on your skin at time of blending to adjust if necessary)

Instructions:

  • Place a small saucepan filled with a few inches of water over medium low heat.
  • Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pastilles to a heat-safe glass jar and place it in the saucepan on the stove. Leave the jar in the saucepan, stirring occasionally until completely melted.
  • Remove the saucepan from the stove and add the zinc oxide powder and cocoa powder to the jar. Stir to combine, ensuring that there are no powder lumps (30 seconds of stirring should suffice).
  • Pour the sunscreen mixture into a glass storage container and allow it to cool at room temperature. Cover when cooled.
  • The sunscreen will maintain firmness as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight and not outside in temperatures that exceed 90º Fahrenheit.

The consumption of processed foods and ultra-processed foods can lead to a long list of health issues. Studies have shown that these foods increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and more. These foods are convenient, but far from healthy, yet a large percentage of the U.S. population eats them on a regular basis.

In April 2023, the California Assembly’s Committee of Health officially approved a bill that would ban five harmful chemicals in processed foods. The California Assembly approved this bill in May 2023. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is one of the bill’s co-sponsors, and it relayed that California would be the first state to impose such a prohibition if the bill becomes law.

5 Chemicals On the CA Ban List

Legislation A.B. 418 would ban the use of the following chemicals in candy, cereals, and other processed foods:

  • Brominated vegetable oil
  • Potassium bromate
  • Propyl paraben
  • Red dye no. 3
  • Titanium dioxide

Brominated Vegetable Oil

One research study noted that brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is a food additive used in certain fruit-flavored beverages as a density stabilizer for citrus oil emulsions. BVO is prepared by the reaction of liquid bromine with unsaturated vegetable oils. It presents a high density and you can typically find it in soda. Historically, BVO has been associated with a long list of health issues in animal studies. A study from 1983 fed adult rats diets containing BVO at different amounts for two weeks before mating. The rats consumed the same diets through gestation and lactation for the female rats. The offspring also consumed BVO. In 2% of the diet, BVO completely blocked reproduction. At 1%, the rats experienced impaired conception, smaller litter size, and lowered maternal weight. Postnatal mortality rate was also high, with survivors showing severe behavioral impairments. At 0.5%, the rats experienced severe behavioral impairments and post weaning activity.

Potassium Bromate

Many health experts are shocked that potassium bromate is used in food products. The International Agency of Research on Cancer described potassium bromate as highly toxic. It produces oxidative DNA damage in rat kidneys, and there is evidence that Available data suggests evidence of genetic toxicity and that it may cause renal tumors via oxidative DNA damage. Potassium bromate is a food additive that has been associated with disturbed blood biochemistry in animal research. It’s typically used in bread-making, and it can be toxic to bakers. In fact, one study on bakers in Cameroon noted that they experienced painful eyes, cough, diarrhea, and sore throat as a result of potassium bromate toxicity.

Propyl Paraben

Propyl parabens exist in a surprising amount of foods and have been associated with negative effects in animal research. In a 2002 study, researchers administered propyl paraben in different doses to three-week-old rats. After four weeks, researchers found that daily sperm production significantly decreased, and testosterone concentrations dropped. Other research on mice noted that propyl paraben negatively affected female reproduction.

Red Dye No. 3

The EWG notes that Red Dye No. 3 can cause tumors in rats and is a known carcinogen to animals. Red Dye No. 3 may potentially cause thyroid issues in rodents and lead to adverse neurobehavioral outcomes in children. Food dyes like Red Dye No. 3 have also been linked to estrogenic and DNA-damaging effects, ADHD, toxicity, and more in human and animal studies.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is potentially carcinogenic to humans and may damage DNA, according to the EWG. It may also cause fibrosis of the heart at high doses, as confirmed in animal studies. It may potentially damage the liver and kidneys in high doses, as shown in animals. While more human research is needed to determine the risks of titanium dioxide, preliminary evidence indicates several side effects from excessive exposure. These side effects include:

  • Skin irritation
  • Cancer
  • Respiratory issues
  • Inflammation
  • Reproductive and developmental effects

Banning all of these chemicals is a great first step to help the U.S. catch up to Europe, where these substances are already banned from use in food, with a few minor exceptions. How is the U.S. behind the rest of the world in this regard? These are seriously dangerous additives that can negatively affect overall health.

Do you dread the thought of going to work? Is it because your workplace is full of negativity, discouragement, or disrespect? Whether you deal with a hothead boss, unreasonable workload, or malicious coworkers, a toxic work environment can take a serious toll on your mental health. Workplace toxicity can lead to high levels of anxiety, stress, insomnia, and depression. That’s why you have to recognize the signs of a toxic work environment and identify when you need to leave.

According to a Talent Works survey, a toxic environment is the most common factor that deters women from pursuing tech roles, with 21% citing frequent experiences. Roughly 1.3% of American employees at large companies describe their workplace as toxic, though. Not only is toxicity in the workplace widespread, but it is also detrimental to the overall wellbeing and mental health of employees.

Signs Of A Toxic Work Environment

A toxic work environment can make you feel psychologically unsafe, and there’s no need to feel constant negativity, aggression, or unhealthy competition. A recent study defined a toxic workplace by having the following:

  • Offensive or aggressive leadership
  • Bullying
  • Narcissistic behavior
  • Ostracism
  • Harassment
  • Threatening behavior from coworkers or managers

The following signs can create or contribute to more toxicity in the workplace:

  • Micromanagement
  • Cliquish behavior
  • Discrimination or harassment
  • A boss that sets you up for failure
  • Excessive gossip
  • Microaggressions
  • Unsafe working conditions
  • Lack of respect
  • Unrealistic workloads
  • Coworkers getting away with inappropriate behavior

The American Psychological Association suggests the following tips if you find yourself in an unhealthy or toxic work situation.

Don’t Stoop To A Toxic Colleague’s Level

It is very important that you do not reward bad behavior. When your coworker rags on your manager’s propensity for leaving work 45 minutes early, step back to avoid the gossip, despite how tempting it may be. Instead, offer a neutral response and pivot to a new subject. Once they realize that you don’t want to take part in their gossip or bad-mouthing, they will probably look elsewhere to do so. Ideally, your dismissal should help them realize that their behavior isn’t normal or appreciated.

Establish Healthy Boundaries

If you know that your work environment is toxic, set healthy boundaries so as to keep your work life and home life separate. For example, consider turning off your work phone after a certain time each day, and only respond to work emails during business hours. Practice communicating your boundaries clearly to your manager and coworkers. If they happen to cross a boundary, address it immediately so that it doesn’t happen again. One survey found that one in every 11 employees felt disrespected by their manager; 11.6% felt disrespected by the company as a whole.

Leave Your Work Stress At The Door

To piggyback on the previous suggestion, creating boundaries can help establish a healthy work-life balance. Occasionally venting about your work to a roommate, parent, or partner is completely different than making it the center of every conversation. Be conscious of how often you talk about your job around the people you care about. Make sure that the majority of the conversations you have are about things other than your annoying coworker or micromanaging boss. People around you will easily tire of listening to your workplace woes, so sing a different tune and don’t dwell on things you can’t control. Life is all about balance!

Build Trust

A micromanager boss can easily pit two basic human neuropsychological needs against each other: your need for autonomy and their need for control. How do you navigate these waters? You will not get autonomy until they get certainty, so you have to gain their trust. In order to do this, provide them with the things they crave: information, inclusion, and control. If you resist that, you will likely aggravate the situation and cause more tension. Try to anticipate their needs because the more you learn about their expectations, the more proactively you can address them. Communicate with them in a clear manner and keep them overly informed. If that means providing regular updates and progress reports, do just that!

If these tactics do not work and you feel that you cannot escape your toxic workplace, it may be time to seek employment elsewhere. That can be very scary, especially in an uncertain job market or if you need to pay bills. If you need the income, start your job search and don’t leave until you find a position that you are happy with. If the toxicity stems from someone who works in the same department as you but you like the company, ask to be transferred to a separate department.

The air freshener market is an enormous beast that seduces you with its enchanting aromas. From candles and plug-in devices to sprays and gels, air fresheners plague you everywhere you go. Businesses have sprays in restrooms, friends have freshening candles in their living rooms, and you may even have plug-ins in your house. Some scents are attractive and others aren’t, but no matter what the scent of the air freshener is, it pollutes your indoor air.

Air Fresheners At A Glance

They seem nice to the untrained nose, but we’re about to drop some knowledge on you. Air fresheners are one of the primary sources of indoor air pollution because they emit or cause the formation of substances that have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. It’s unfortunate because companies can label their air fresheners with “all-natural” or “green” words to attract customers, despite the fact that they are far from natural. Fragrances are trademarked blends, and companies are not required to put the ingredients in those blends on ingredient labels.

What Is Indoor Air Pollution?

Yes, the air in your home is not as safe as you thought. It may not be as poor as the air outside, which is replete with environmental pollutants and airborne toxins. While the air in your home may not be as healthy as you think it is, you have complete control over how fresh your indoor air is. Air fresheners, cooking oils, cleaning products, and building materials dictate the quality of indoor air. If you use air fresheners, a quick and easy way to improve indoor air quality is by throwing them out. Get them out of your house!

When you don’t have the constant presence of fragrances in your house, you may notice that you experience better respiratory function. The fragrances from air freshener gels, sprays, or plug-ins contain contain the following harmful pollutants:

  • Parabens: which can increase the risk of breast cancer.
  • Toluene: which scientists have linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity.
  • 1,4-Diclorobenzene (1,4 DB): a volatile organic compound that can negatively affect lung function, especially in people with asthma or respiratory illnesses.
  • Xylene: linked to symptoms such as headaches, depression, dizziness, short-term memory impairment, and central nervous system depression.
  • d-Limonene: is a sensitizer, which can increase the odds of future allergic reactions. It may also irritate the eyes and skin.
  • Phthalates: linked to damaging the female reproductive system and increasing the risk of birth defects. It may also contribute to endocrine disruption.
  • Benzene: a harmful carcinogen that is toxic to reproductive and developmental health.

Making Your Own Air Freshener

You don’t need to subject your respiratory system to harmful fragrances that contain volatile compounds because it’s easy to make your own air freshener. It sounds difficult, but it’s so much easier than you think. All you need is some baking soda, the essential oil of your choice, a glass jar, and a cupcake liner. Perfectly naturally and wonderfully aromatic. Your house will smell as fragrant as ever without harming your air quality.

DIY Air Freshener

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil (or whatever essential oil you prefer)
  • 4 ounce mason jar
  • Cupcake liner
  • Skewer

Instructions:

  • Add the baking soda to the mason jar and mix in the essential oil. Give it a quick mix.
  • Place a cupcake liner over the jar and place a rubber band around the jar.
  • Screw the lid down over the cupcake liner and use a skewer to poke a few holes in the cupcake liner.
  • You’re all set and ready to smell delicious!

In light of the recent coronavirus scare and increasing numbers of people with the flu, hand sanitizers are flying off the shelves at local drug stores. It’s not surprising that people want to take preventative measures to keep themselves safe from the viruses, but is hand sanitizer the best defense against influenza or coronavirus?

It’s safe to say that people have become reliant on hand sanitizers for cleaning germs off their hands. Companies market these products as “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial,” but most scientists say that they are not very effective and can engender bacterial strains that resist antibiotics. While the use of hand sanitizers may be effective when soap and water are nowhere in sight, the chemicals in them are often harmful to your health. Some common chemicals include triclosan, artificial fragrances, and artificial dyes.

How Do Germs Spread?

While hand sanitizer may cut down on the transmission of germs, there is no guarantee that it will do so. Germs spread several different ways, the primary of which include:

  • Direct contact (someone coughs in their hand and then you shake hands with them)
  • Indirect contact (you touch a shopping cart, which is covered in germs, and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth without washing your hands)
  • Airborne (someone coughs or sneezes and those droplets are inhaled by someone else)

The Negatives Of Hand Sanitizer

Hormone Disruption

Triclosan is to blame for the disruption of hormones. According the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), triclosan may lead to hormonal disruption and cause bacteria to adapt to its antimicrobial properties. This means that hand sanitizers may become less effective at fighting germs the more you use them. Since animal studies showed that triclosan can change hormones, further investigation was initiated to understand the effect is has in humans.

Toxic Chemicals

If you purchase scented hand sanitizer, it is most likely loaded with artificial fragrances, dyes, and other chemical compounds. The manufacturers aren’t required to disclose the ingredients that make up signature scents, which are often made from countless chemicals. Synthetic fragrances often contain phthalates, which are known endocrine disrupters that have the potential to alter genital development.

May Affect Immune Function

The very thing that is supposed to be protecting you from germs may be decreasing immune function. According to research conducted at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, triclosan may negatively impact the human immune system. The study found that children and teens with higher levels of triclosan in the body were more likely to develop allergies and hay fever.

Belonging to the ginger family, turmeric was first cultivated in India and Indonesia, where it was used in culinary, medicinal, and religious practices. People often associate turmeric with the deep golden hue of curries, but it actually has a long history of medicinal use. It has been known to treat a variety of skin conditions (including eczema and rashes), stomach ailments, or liver problems. Turmeric remains an important herb in Ayurveda, which is an ancient Indian system that focuses on natural healing.

A Pakistani Thyroid Study

A high percentage of people in South Asian countries have thyroid disorders, which are primarily attributed to iodine deficiency and goitrogen intake. Goitrogens are substances that disrupt the natural production of thyroid hormones, and they interfere with iodine uptake. In a study that involved 2,335 residents from Pak Pattan, Punja, Pakistan, the presence of goiter was more common in females, unmarried individuals, and in people who drank tube well (subterranean) water. The study observed that goiter was extremely high in those with hyperthyroidism. Goiter was less common in people who consumed spices, chilies, and turmeric daily. Furthermore, turmeric use was associated with reduced goitrogenesis. Follow up studies will focus on the quantity of turmeric that should be consumed for goiter treatment.

How Does Turmeric Benefits The Thyroid?

For people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (the “itis” indicating inflammation of the thyroid gland), chronic or excess inflammation is very common. Additionally, intestinal permeability or heavy metal toxicity are common factors in autoimmune-related diseases, including Hashimoto’s. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is rich in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. Curcumin has been known to:

  • Reduce the hepatotoxicity that is induced by cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, or mercury. It can also maintain liver antioxidant enzyme status and protect against mitochondrial dysfunction.
  • Help protect the intestinal barrier from infection, which is beneficial for those with leaky gut.
  • Protect against the side effects and genetic damage of radioactive iodine, which is occasionally used to help treat Graves’ disease.
  • Produce anti-inflammatory effects by regulating Th-1 cytokines, which may be overactive in patients with Hashimoto’s disease. People also praise turmeric for its ability to reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, which may benefit those with irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis.

Turmeric Tea For Your Thyroid

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 tablespoons turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon virgin coconut oil
  • a few slices of fresh ginger root
  • a pinch of cinnamon

Instructions:

  • Mix the turmeric and black pepper in a large mug. Black pepper is in this tea because it increases the bioavailability of turmeric, allowing your body to absorb it more easily.
  • Pour the boiling water into the mug and stir to help dissolve the black pepper and turmeric.
  • Add the coconut oil, which also helps the body absorb turmeric, and mix well.
  • For added taste and health benefits, add the ginger slices and cinnamon, stirring well to combine flavors.
  • Drink this tea twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. Follow this regimen for two weeks and then take a two-day break before resuming.
