Doesn’t the idea of sticking a bunch of needles in your skin when you have anxiety sound like a wonderfully relaxing idea? As terrifying as it may sound, acupuncture is an ancient healing modality that has been used for thousands of years to alleviate pain and treat numerous conditions. Acupuncturists insert needles into specific points in the body to address the given conditions.

For anxiety, acupuncture needles go in areas like the insides of your wrists, ears, and between your eyes. Using acupuncture to alleviate anxiety is not merely anecdotal, as it also has scientific evidence to back up its effectiveness. Continue reading to learn how acupuncture may help people with anxiety

Does Acupuncture Really Work For Anxiety?

According to acupuncturists, acupuncture works to ease anxiety by regulating the nervous system. Specifically, it works to bring parts of the autonomic nervous system back into balance. The autonomic nervous system helps regulate involuntary physiological processes, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and digestion. Shifting the body back into a relaxed state allows the sympathetic nervous system to be more balanced.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) states that “qi,” the body’s internal energy, flows up and down throughout various pathways within the body. If that energy is blocked or it isn’t balanced, the body is put under stress. Acupuncture helps to restore the natural balance within the body and encourages healing as a result.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and many include recommendations for nutrition, psychotherapy, and exercise to enhance the treatment. There is no separation between the physical and mental aspects of a person, according to TCM. If you explain to an acupuncturist that you feel anxious and wake up sweaty in the middle of the night, they will not think that these issues are separate.

In fact, that description is a common symptom of “yin deficiency,” according to TCM. Yin, along with its counterpart yang, allows a person to experience aligned qi. TCM explains that a yin deficiency can indicate emotional problems, including night sweats, anxiety, depression, and tension.

Where Do Needles Go For Anxiety?

An acupuncturist does not merely stick needles in random places on the body. There are specific acupuncture points that influence physical and mental symptoms. Some of these points can include:

 • Insides of the wrists
 • On the feet
 • Between the eyebrows
 • On your breastbone or ears

Benefits Of Acupuncture

One review looked at 20 studies of using acupuncture on people with generalized anxiety disorder. The authors’ conclusion was that acupuncture can be beneficial for alleviating some anxiety symptoms when compared to medication or other non-acupuncture therapies. At this time, though, it is still not clear whether people with other types of anxiety benefit from acupuncture. Higher quality, randomized controlled trials are still needed to understand how acupuncture could help treat different anxiety disorders. Such disorders to consider include:

 • Panic disorder
 • Agoraphobia
 • Selective mutism
 • Phobias
 • Social anxiety disorder
 • Separation anxiety disorder

Acupuncture may also be beneficial for certain surgical procedures. One study compared acupuncture to pharmacological treatment. People who receive acupuncture before gallbladder surgery or hernia repair experienced less preoperative anxiety than those who took Midazolam, an anti-anxiety medication. Acupuncture may also benefit people with knee, lower back, and neck pain. A lot of people find that it can alleviate headaches as well. Some evidence shows that acupuncture may be useful for easing anxiety in people with chronic pain.

If you are feeling anxious, you may want to consider acupuncture as a natural remedy. Just make sure that you visit an acupuncturist for the best care. Research indicates that acupuncture may reduce anxiety symptoms and there are minimal risks when done correctly.

How Often Should You Wash Your Bath Towels? https://www.dherbs.com/articles/how-often-should-you-wash-your-bath-towels/ Sat, 24 Feb 2024 09:13:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=169165

You probably need to wash your bath towels more often than you think! They can harbor bacteria and can even cause skin irritation.

The post How Often Should You Wash Your Bath Towels? appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Bedsheets and towels are materials that touch your skin daily, especially the most intimate parts of your body. Like most people, you probably hang your towel up after drying off when you exit the shower. You don’t think about it (perhaps) until the towel starts to smell. That is downright gross, and it raises the question: How often should you wash your bath towels?

Why Washing Your Bath Towels Is So Important

There’s no other way to say this without being blunt: you get up close and personal with your bath towel on a daily basis. You use it to dry off every square inch of your body, from head to toe. After a few uses, your towel can be contaminated with several pathogens or bacteria that increase your risk of infection. Some of those things include:

 • Fecal pathogens (norovirus, C. diff, and E. coli)
 • Fungal species (such as the ones that cause ringworm and athlete’s foot)
 • Skin pathogens (such as Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA)
 • Bacterial and viral pathogens that can cause conjunctivitis

How Often Should You Wash Your Bath Towel?

Some researchers suggest that you should wash or change your bath towel after every use. This isn’t exactly feasible for everyone. Other researchers say that you can stretch your bath towel to three uses (max), so long as it dries fully between each use. According to one dermatologist and cofounder of Audubon Dermatology in New Orleans, Louisiana, she changes her bath towel every day. She added that it is acceptable to throw them in the laundry after every two to three uses.

What all researchers can agree on is that the towel must fully dry between each use. The reason for this is because drying helps kill potential microbes and inhibits them from growing. Your towel’s ability to dry will depend on the climate in your house. A towel may never fully dry in a more humid environment, and your bathroom tends to stay more humid than other areas in the home. For this reason, you may want to hang dry your towels outside the bathroom.

As a quick note, there are some exceptions to the three-day towel rule. If you have open cuts or scrapes, had a recent surgery (such as mole or skin cancer removal), or have a lot of eczema or psoriasis, you will want to change towels more frequently. The reason for that is because the skin barrier is not intact, which is why you want to be more careful. Use a fresh towel after every shower until the skin has properly healed.

How To Correctly Wash (And Dry) Your Towels

Make sure to wash your towels with detergent and then dry them on high heat. Health experts agree that that is the most efficient washing and drying routine to kill germs and keep mold counts down. Choose a detergent that contains enzymes, which break down dirt and kill germs during the wash cycle. The detergent will have that listed on the front label, saying that enzymes fight stains.

If you have sensitive skin, it is possible that using a new detergent may cause irritation. If you experience any irritation after using a new detergent, stop using it. You can also find dye-free and fragrance-free detergents that incorporate enzymes into their formulas, as they may be gentler on the skin. You can also use liquid bleach or laundry products that contain activated oxygen bleach. Those products increase the efficacy of the cleaning process

What Happens If You Don’t Wash Towels Twice Per Week?

The short answer is that your skin will never be the same. No, of course this is not the truth. The reality is that not everyone will have problems with infrequent towel washing. If you notice that your towel has a mildew smell, that stink can transfer onto your skin when you dry off after showering. That could potentially trigger or contribute to allergy symptoms if you are allergic to mold.

The transferring of pathogens from your towels to your own skin is possible, as we stated earlier in this article. That is true even if they are your own germs. You can get something from your towel, but it depends on how long the specific pathogen can survive and whether or not it will transfer from the towel to your body. On the other hand, some people won’t have any skin problems from overusing one towel. It really just depends on your skin and your body’s risk of infections.

The post 3 Easy Stretches To Help Prevent Back Pain appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

If you’ve learned anything about getting older, it is that back pain is inevitable. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of bending over to tie your shoe and feeling a strain in your lower back. If you sit at a desk all day, you are familiar with tightness in the shoulders and back. It’s as if everyday activities do their very best to wear out your back, or so it seems anyway.

There Are Different Types Of Back Pain

Back pain can either be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). You may experience a dull ache or constant pain, both of which can be unpleasant. Acute back pain tends to last for a few days to a few weeks. Accidents, falls, or lifting something that is too heavy can all cause acute back pain, which tends to get better without treatment. Chronic back pain tends to last three months or longer and it is much less common than acute back pain. Most chronic back pain can be remedied without surgery, though.

The reality is that you can decrease your risk of back injury by increasing flexibility with regular stretching exercises. Your muscles need to move, so the combination of moderate exercise and stretching can help increase mobility and flexibility of the spine and surrounding muscles. Below, we will detail three stretches to help prevent back pain, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

 • Stretch slowly and avoid jerky or bouncy movements.
 • Stretching cold muscles can increase the risk of injury. For this reason, warm up with five to 10 minutes of light activity, for example, walking or pedaling a stationary bike.
 • Relax into each stretch and hold each position for at least 30 seconds.
 • Only go to the point where you feel mild tension.

Back Flexion And Extension

Begin on all fours in a tabletop position, stacking your shoulders directly over your wrists and hips over your knees. Rock forward slightly and put your weight onto your arms. Round your shoulders and allow your butt to drop a little. Hold this position for five seconds and then rock backwards to sit your butt as close to your heels as possible, maintaining extended arms throughout. After holding that position for five seconds, return to the starting position. Repeat this process a total of five times.

Knee To Chest Stretch

Lie flat on your back with your legs extended and arms by your sides. Bend your right leg and draw your knee up toward your chest. Reach both hands around your knee or shin and pull your leg as close to your chest as you comfortably can. Do your bet to tighten your lower abdominal muscles and press your lower back into the floor during the stretch. Remain in this position for about five seconds and then return to the starting position. Do the same with your left leg and then repeat with both legs at once. That is one sequence, and you should complete the sequence five times.

Standing Back Arch

Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart. Place both of your hands on your lower back, facing your fingers down. Each hand should be on either side of your spine just above your gluteus muscles. Take a few slow, deep breaths in this position to promote relaxation. Bend your upper body backward and keep your knees straight. The reason your hands are on your lower back is to support your back as you lean backward. Hold this position for five seconds before returning slowly to the starting position. Repeat a total of five times.

The post What Is Vitamin B12 Deficiency? appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is an essential vitamin, meaning that the body needs it to function properly. The body cannot make B12 on its own, so it is your responsibility to obtain it via dietary sources or supplements. This vitamin plays a critical role in the formation of red blood cells, cell metabolism, and the production of DNA. It also aids with healthy nerve function and even though it is essential for optimal health, it’s estimated that 6% of the U.S. population younger than 60 years is B12 deficient.

How Much Vitamin B12 Do You Need?

Your B12 needs change depending on your age range. Like most other nutrients, babies and children require less B12 on a daily basis than older adults. Below, you’ll find a breakdown for the recommended daily intake (RDI) of B12 in micrograms (mcg):

 • Birth to 6 months: 0.4 mcg
 • 7-12 months: 0.5 mcg
 • 1-3 years: 0.9 mcg
 • 4-8 years: 1.2 mcg
 • 9-13 years: 1.8 mcg
 • 14-18 years: 2.4 mcg
 • 19 years or older: 2.4 mcg

Keep in mind that these recommendations are based on amounts that you need to avoid deficiency. The average adult may need more or less B12 to maintain optimal levels. For example, to achieve healthy blood levels of B12, research suggests that daily intake levels of B12 should reach 5.94 mcg for men and 3.78 mcg for women over the age of 20. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, needs for vitamin B12, and most other nutrients, increase. Vitamin B12 is vital for proper fetal growth, so pregnant women require 2.8 mcg per day.

What Causes B12 Deficiency?

There are several factors, some of which are out of a person’s control, that contribute to vitamin B12 deficiency. According to research, the three primary causes of B12 deficiency are:

 • Autoimmune issues: Pernicious anemia is a type of autoimmune condition that makes it hard for the small intestine to properly absorb B12, leading to low levels.
 • Low dietary Intake: Vitamin B12 is primarily in animal-based foods, including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and poultry. For this reason, people who follow strict vegan and vegetarian diets are more at risk for deficiency. It tends to take a couple years of following these diets to become deficient, which is why experts encourage supplementation
 • Malabsorption: Some people aren’t able to properly absorb B12 because of intestinal damage or surgery. People who have had gastric bypass surgery or part of their bowel removed may be at risk for B12 deficiency.
 • Long-term use of certain medications: Certain medications, especially ones that lower blood sugar or treat acid reflux, can interfere with B12 absorption and ultimately cause B12 deficiency.

What Are Symptoms Of B12 Deficiency?

It should be noted that B12 deficiency is not very common in the U.S., but it is more common in the Indian subcontinent, Mexico, and Central and South America. Selected areas of Africa also have an increased risk of B12 deficiency. Deficiency can go undetected in many people, which is why bloodwork is necessary to determine your levels. The most common symptoms of this B12 deficiency include:

 • Fatigue
 • Pale skin
 • Dry lips
 • Breathlessness when engaging in activity
 • Pale conjunctiva (tissue that lines the inside of the eyelids)
 • B12 deficiency can also lead to neurological symptoms like:
 • Dizziness
 • Headaches
 • Difficulty walking
 • Memory problems
 • Tingling in the extremities

Risk Factors

Some people have a higher risk than others of developing vitamin B12 deficiency. Different factors like underlying medical conditions and age can influence susceptibility. Other factors, like long-term use of certain medications, can increase the risk of B12 deficiency. Being pregnant or breastfeeding can also put people at a higher risk for deficiency. The reason for this is because needs for B12 increase during these times. Abusing alcohol and drugs like methamphetamine can increase the risk for B12 deficiency. More often than not, poor dietary intake leads to B12 deficiency, but alcohol and other drugs can lead to decreased B12 absorption.

]]>

When you have knee pain that results from an injury, every movement can be intimidating. The last thing you want to do, however, is avoid movement, as stagnation can elongate the recovery process. You should aim to move, stretch, and strengthen your knee if you want to aid your recovery process. How do you do that without causing more pain? The yoga poses in this article should help with your recovery, whether it was from an injury, surgery, or overuse.

There are a few key aspects that can help support your knee during the recovery process. Because the knees are between the hips and the feet, they tend to take the most impact, especially during higher-impact activities. Engaging in certain yoga poses can not only strengthen and lengthen the muscles around the knee, but it also does this in a gentle way. Yoga also aims to open the hips and improve your balance, two integral aspects for recovering from a knee injury. By improving your balance, body awareness, and stability, you can begin to do more with your knee, but just remember not to overdo it and always take it slow.

Locust Pose

Working to strengthen your lower back muscles, locust pose helps to activate muscles in the lower part of the body. This works to create stability and increases support for the knee. Start by laying down on the ground on your stomach. Rest the left side of your face on the ground and place your arms by your side, facing your palms up. As you inhale, lift your chest and arms off the ground, bringing your shoulder blades closer together. Face the ground and tuck your chin slightly. You can remain here without activating the lower body, or you can squeeze your glutes, lower back, and hamstrings to lift your legs off the ground. Stay here for five deep breaths and then relax. Rest for a few breaths and then repeat two more times.

Head-to-Knee Pose

This pose aims to open the hips, lower back, and hamstrings. When you create more space in these areas, you can help reduce the tension and stress in the knee area. Begin in a seated position with your legs extended out in front of you. Bend your right knee to bring the sole of your right foot to the left inner thigh. Hinging at the hips, lean forward and attempt to bring your forehead to your knee. If you cannot get down that far, don’t worry. If you want to deepen the stretch, flex your foot and reach for your toes. If you need support, you can put a bolster or yoga block under your right knee. Hold for five to 10 deep breaths and then repeat on the other side.

Reclined Knee-to-Chest

During this pose, you may feel some relief in your knee, but you should especially feel it in your lower back. This stretch helps to stabilize the pelvis and improve range of motion in the knees, making it excellent for recovery. Lie flat on your back with your arms by your sides. Bend your right knee and bring it up towards your chest. Grab your right shin and gently bring it closer to your chest, aiming to hug it completely against your chest. Don’t for it though, as you shouldn’t cause pain. Stay here for 10 deep breaths before repeating on the other side.

Chair Pose

By strengthening your quadriceps, hips, and glutes, you can help create more stability in the knees. The lower you sink into the pose, the more strength you can build, but just remember to take it slow. Stand straight up with your feet hip-distance apart. Bend your knees slightly, pull the lower abdomen into the spine, and sit back as if to sit down in a chair. Make sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes and try to raise your arms above your head, keeping them in a straight line with your back. Hold the position for five deep breaths and then return to the starting position. Repeat two more times after a quick rest.

Supported Tree Pose

Regular tree pose is a test for your balance, but it can strain your knee if you are recovering from a knee injury. Start in a standing position with your feet hip-distance apart. Place a yoga block on the outside of your right foot. Shift your weight to the left and lift your right foot off the ground as you bend your knee. Turn your right knee out and place the ball of your right foot on the yoga block, allowing the heel to rest on your left shin. Push into your standing leg to keep your hips level and bring your hands to heart center. Remain in this pose for 10 deep breaths and then repeat on the other side.

The post Hysterectomy: The Number One Surgery That Women Don’t Need appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

So you’re in the market for a hysterectomy, are you? The top things to take into account are the potential side effects, which your doctor may not tell you about or thoroughly explain, that may occur. From vaginal shortening, nerve issues, loss of sensation, bowel dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse to urinary incontinence, there are many factors to consider. While these are only some of the side affects, we’ve got some information that will hopefully steer you away from this surgery that women don’t really need.

Women are lead to believe a hysterectomy is good because of the “instant relief” factor. Whether you have fibroids, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis, the decision to get a hysterectomy isn’t something that you should say yes to. A female’s reproductive organs are essential to womanhood from the time a woman starts puberty and even after she is in menopause. By removing any part of the female reproductive system, a woman immediately throws off her hormonal balance. This can launch a younger woman into menopause and can make weight loss near impossible.

Did you know that there are over half a million hysterectomies performed every year in America? How are all these surgeries necessary? The reason for this is because doctors sway you into thinking that the procedure is absolutely necessary and that alternative or natural remedies won’t be effective. Additionally, a hysterectomy can cost anywhere from $8,000-$15,000. Multiply that cost by half a million and that’s a boatload of money that doctors are making.

One major complaint, which we at Dherbs often hear, is that losing weight after a hysterectomy can be a major issue. This is because you throw off your hormonal balance. When you have a hormonal imbalance, it becomes harder for your body to process things and regulate normal functions; thus, losing weight can become difficult and gaining weight can happen easily. This can be compared to having a thyroid problem, another hormonal issue. If your thyroid or adrenal glands are not functioning correctly, for example, weight loss or gain can be a constant uphill battle.

An important thing to remember is that the female reproductive system contains organs, which can be regenerated via natural remedies. One of the best ways to breathe new life into your organs is by cleansing them. You can target a specific organ or cleanse the entire body. The most common reason for hysterectomies are fibroid tumors, which can be remedied by cleansing the body, staying properly hydrated, drinking apple cider vinegar, using a castor oil pack, staying away from hormonal disrupting foods like soy and dairy, and eating foods with strong antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It may take longer to get rid of them, but it is better than disturbing your hormonal balance for the rest of your life.

The best way to lose weight for women with hormonal imbalances is to first lower stress levels. Cortisol (a.k.a. the stress hormone) encourages blood sugar to convert in to long-term fat storage. Now, this is beneficial if you are surviving in the wild, but chances are that you don’t want to store fat for a long time. Ways to combat these stress levels can include yoga, Tai Chi, or other breathing exercises. These exercises can help lower stress and establish a healthy digestive system, which is integral for weight loss.

Cardio exercises are beneficial because they boost endorphins, speed up your metabolism, and strengthen your immune system. Additionally, watch your caloric intake. You don’t want to be consuming more calories than you are burning. Eating too much can also be common for those who get hysterectomies. Because hormones are out of whack, you will most likely craves salty, sugary, or fatty foods, all of which can lead to weight gain.

This is a lot of information to take in, and we’ve tried to discuss the issue we primarily hear a lot. There are some cases where a hysterectomy may be necessary, but we always recommend trying natural remedies first. For more medical explanations, you can read our article on hysterectomies. We just want to encourage women to try alternative remedies before delving into a surgery that is dangerous and unnecessary.

The post The Dangers of Blood Transfusions appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Dherbs doesn’t recommend blood transfusions due to their inherent risk to the body’s overall health.

As no two people’s blood is EXACTLY alike, it’s not healthy to take the blood of someone since their blood is formulated exclusively for their body. While blood can be “typed” and “matched” your body may reject it for a variety of reasons.

Blood transfusions are like an organ transplant-even with the most thorough testing, matching and typing, there’s a possibility the transfusion will be rejected, causing severe damage to vital organs, and possibly death.

Risks and Side Effects

Blood transfusions have several known side effects:

Allergic reaction (hives)

Even with an exact blood match, it’s possible to have an allergic reaction to parts of the blood received in the transfusion.

Fever

While a fever itself may not be cause for worry, doctors usually stop transfusions if the patient spikes a fever while receiving the blood as it may indicate a more serious side-effect.

Acute Immune Hemolytic Reaction

This a rare, but potentially deadly, side effect from receiving a blood transfusion. The reaction is triggered by the body rejecting the transfused blood, usually due to an improper match in blood types.

Delayed Hemolytic Reaction

While the same reaction as the acute immune hemolytic reaction, the delayed reaction takes longer to manifest itself.

Lung Injury

This can happen due to antibodies or other pathogens in the transfused blood that accumulate in the lungs.

Blood Infection

Although a rare side effect, blood infections can be transferred through blood transfusions including:

 • HIV/AIDS
 • Hepatitis B
 • Hepatitis C
 • West Nile Virus
 • Sepsis (bacterial infection)

Iron Overdose

It’s possible to receive too much iron as a result of a blood transfusion, which can damage internal organs, such as the heart and liver.

Graft-versus-Host Disease

White blood cells attack the red blood cells transfused into the body, essentially treating the infused blood as an infection. While rare, graft-versus-host disease is usually fatal.

Alternatives to Blood Transfusions

There are currently no alternatives to blood transfusions, since the body needs a fixed amount of blood to survive.

If you anticipate needing a blood transfusion (such as needing surgery or giving birth), it’s advised to donate blood to the hospital’s blood bank so your own blood will be transfused back into your body, reducing the likelihood of experiencing the known risks or side effects.

To rebuild, strengthen, fortify, tone, revivify, and nourish the blood, use herbs such as:

Liquid chlorophyll is a great aid to rebuild, fortify, tone, revivify, and nourish the blood.

Eating foods rich in organic iron (Iron Phosphate) will also help rebuild, fortify, tone, revivify, and nourish the blood.

Natural penis enlargement is a common concern among many men. Most men have an interest in a larger penis, but not to the extent that they would undergo surgery or take drastic measures.

In today’s world, sexual performance is a concern for many of us. Many factors can affect sexual performance and the health of the penis. Diet and medication can cause men to experience below normal sexual performance.

This concern among men is not vain. It is normal to be concerned with the health and wellness of your body, including your sexual health. Taking steps to naturally improve your sexual well being is the first stop in achieving the sexual wellness you desire.

Diet and Sexual Health

As you know, diet can play a large role in the overall health of the whole body. When we feed the body proper nutrition, it will perform better. This includes sexually. Diet may be a contributing factor to low libido, poor performance and penis size.

Switching to a diet that is based around all-natural foods is a key component in sexual well being. Eliminate refined foods, meat, dairy and anything processed. Adding raw fruits and vegetables to your diet will help to cleanse the body and allow it to function more efficiently.

Juicing is a helpful way to get the vegetable nutrition you need. Try adding raw vegetable juices to your daily diet. Some great green vegetables to include are:

 • Kale
 • Spinach
 • Celery
 • Parsley
 • Cilantro

By juicing, you are adding healthy, whole nutrition to your body. Plus, green foods are highly cleansing and can assist in detoxifying the body and the blood.

Medications and Sexual Health

Certain medications have been linked to sexual issues in men. If you read the warning labels and side effects of many prescription drugs, low libido is often listed. While we do not recommend discontinuing medications without consulting your physician first, we do recommend living a healthier lifestyle to avoid having to take prescription medications in the first place.

Some medications that have sexual side effects in men include:

 • Anti Depressants
 • Anti epileptics
 • ACE inhibitors
 • Alpha- blockers
 • Beta-blockers
 • Calcium-blockers
 • Thiazide diuretics
 • Antipsychotics
 • Cholesterol lowering medications
 • Anxiety medication
 • Insomnia medication
 • Acid reflux medications
 • Painkillers
 • Prostate medications

If you are currently taking one of these prescription medications, this could be the reason for your sexual frustrations. Speak with a medical professional before discontinuing medications.

Circumcision is a widely practiced yet somewhat controversial surgery that is usually performed on infant boys. During the surgery, the doctor removes either some or all of the penile foreskin. Circumcision has a historical long tradition and is advocated for by many different religions, although it may also be performed for social or cultural reasons. There are also some health benefits, although potential drawbacks as well.

History

The exact roots of circumcision are not known with certainty. There are many different theories posed about circumcision that suggest it could have functioned in a variety of ways, including as a:

 • Hygienic measure
 • Rite of passage indicating a boy’s entrance into adulthood
 • Gesture of symbolic castration for slaves or enemies
 • Religious sacrifice

Religion and Circumcision

Different religions have different perspectives about circumcision. Some religious mandate it, while others formally condemn it. In Judaism, for instance, it is considered a commandment from God. It is also widely practiced in Islam and in the Coptic faith; the World Health Organization estimates that of the 664,500,000 men aged fifteen and older who are circumcised, around 70% are Muslim. The Roman Catholic Church formally banned circumcision in 1442 in the Ecumenical Council at Basel-Florence, but has today adopted a neutral stance about circumcision for medical reasons.

In South Africa, churches vary on their stances. Some Christian churches view it as a pagan ritual and oppose the practice, while others (such as the Nomiya church in Kenya) make membership contingent upon circumcision.

Statistics about Circumcision

Statistics for the number of circumcised males vary widely, but it is thought that somewhere between one-sixth and one-third of men from around the world are circumcised. It is most commonly performed on men between the age of infancy and early twenties.

Levels of circumcision are generally low in Europe, Latin America, and Asia (with the exception of the Philippines, parts of Southeast Asia, and South Korea). Although estimates from Spain, Colombia, and Denmark suggest that less than 2% of men are circumcised, the data for the United States indicates that 75% of men are circumcised.

Medical Benefits and Concerns

Studies examining the perceived benefits and drawbacks have received varying results. One of the few non-debated benefits is that circumcision reduces the risk of HIV transmission among heterosexual men. However, it is only efficacious in reducing the transmission from a woman to a man. It has been shown to have little to no effect in reducing the risk of male-to-male or man-to woman HIV transmissions. The WHO has advocated circumcision as a cost-effective means to prevent HIV transmission, as long as the surgeries are performed by experienced doctors and the patients give their consent.

Circumcision has also been associated with a reduced risk of urinary tract infections and for penile skin conditions. Some studies suggest that neonatal circumcision reduces the risk of contracting penile cancer, although it should be noted that penile cancer occurs relatively infrequently.

Since the time of the Egyptians, circumcision has been used to reinforce penile hygiene. In 1999, however, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated that “there is little evidence to affirm the association between circumcision status and optimal penile hygiene.” Uncircumcised men can have perfectly clean and healthy penises, while some circumcised men may experience medical issues with their penis.

Ethical Issues

There have been questions raised about the morality of removing healthy, functioning genital tissue from people too young to give their consent. Some organizations argue that infant circumcision is morally wrong because it infringes upon the rights of the individual and represents a human rights violation.

Others worry that circumcision inflicts unnecessary pain upon young children and could cause psychological issues later in life.

To conclude, circumcision is an ambiguous issue. There is no clear “right” or “wrong” answer.
