Achieving smooth, hydrated skin does not have to be a lifelong journey. You can accomplish this goal if you give your skin the right ingredients, both inside and out. That means that you eat the right foods that benefit your skin from the inside and apply a series of creams, salves, butters, masks, and more topically to also boost skin health. Selecting the right products is often where people find the most difficulty, though.

This super green spirulina face mask can help hydrate, soothe, and calm your facial skin. It contains spirulina powder, aloe vera gel, and Manuka honey, all of which deeply nourish the skin. Although spirulina receives a lot of praise for supplying the body with many nutrients, it doesn’t get enough attention for topical use. Spirulina benefits the skin in the following ways:

 • Helps the skin retain moisture
 • Helps eliminate bad bacteria that may cause acne
 • Provides the skin with beneficial antioxidant compounds
 • Contains chlorophyll, which is very cleansing
 • Helps exfoliate skin

How Does Spirulina Benefit The Skin?

According to a study from 2020, applying a cream containing spirulina to the skin could be a potential acne treatment. The reason for this is because spirulina exhibits powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Spirulina may even be a better option than local antibiotic therapy, due to fewer side effects and zero antibiotic resistance.

A separate study from 2020 confirmed that an ointment containing spirulina was effective at improving eczema symptoms when applied topically two times daily, three times per week. Another study found that spirulina helped reduce the presence of psoriasis in mice. The study suggests that spirulina could potentially advance as a natural pharmaceutical for psoriasis treatment.

How Does Manuka Honey Benefit The Skin?

Manuka honey is a semi-opaque honey made from the nectar of the Manuka plant, which is native to New Zealand. This unique honey is highly praised for its valuable antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Manuka honey also has higher pH and sugar content than other honey varieties, which may contribute to the impressive antibacterial activity.

The polyphenols in Manuka honey may help block the effects of damaging external factors, such as sun exposure and environmental pollutants, which helps delay the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Manuka honey also boasts emollient and humectant properties. As a quick refresher, emollients fill the spaces between skin cells to promote softer skin, while humectants draw moisture from the air into the skin to boost hydration

How Does Aloe Vera Benefit The Skin?

Aloe vera is one of the most popular herbal remedies for topical skin conditions. The gel-like components of the aloe plant have been known to remedy a variety of ailments, including burns, sunburns, and minor cuts and scrapes. The skin can easily absorb aloe vera gel, making it ideal for oily skin. That said, it may be effective at soothing dry skin because it helps to seal moisture into the skin. Aloe vera gel also helps to boost collagen production and fight bacteria. Lastly, aloe vera gel may help alleviate seborrheic dermatitis, alleviating the itchiness that is common with this condition.

Spirulina Face Mask

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 tablespoon Manuka honey
 • 1/2 tablespoon aloe vera gel
 • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder

Instructions:

 • Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and mix well.
 • Apply to a clean face and leave on for 15-20 minutes.
 • Rinse with warm water and pat your face dry. Follow up with a natural moisturizer.

Will you transform into a superhero if you eat superfoods? That’s not for us to say, but eating foods with a high concentration of nutrients will benefit your overall health. Take these superfood energy balls, for instance. Although their color is due to spirulina, the spirulina isn’t the only nutrient-dense ingredient in this recipe. These energy balls contain almonds, pumpkin seeds, dates, desiccated coconut, and almond butter, all of which offer a combination of healthy fats, protein, fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.

Spirulina is a type of algae that grows in fresh or salt water, but we don’t expect you to scavenge the coral reef for it. It is readily available in tablet or powder form and provides many antioxidant compounds that may help protect from various diseases. One review found that spirulina was able to significantly improve markers of total cholesterol and triglycerides in people with metabolic syndrome. Another review of five studies found that taking between one to eight grams of spirulina per day helped reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.

Don’t worry about these energy balls tasting like a freshly caught fish, though. The sweetness from the dates and nuttiness from the almond and pumpkin seeds. The pumpkin seeds also contribute to the signature greenish-blue color of these energy balls. They provide lots of zinc, fiber, unsaturated fats, and protein. You’ll be fueled up with just one or two of these balls of energy!

If you want your skin to glow, you have to treat it right. The matcha clay face mask in this article is a simple, all-natural mask that works to detoxify the skin. Not only does that help remove impurities from your pores, but it also helps the skin look more radiant. Can you go wrong with nourishing ingredients like matcha, French green claw, kaolin clay, honey powder, aloe vera powder, and more?

This face mask helps to absorb excess oil and deep clean the skin. Matcha, spirulina, and goat milk powder help to calm and revive the skin with nourishing vitamins and minerals. Other ingredients help trap moisture into the skin and give it an immediate glow. Whether you have acne prone skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, or dry skin, this mask is highly suitable. Continue reading to learn about some of the standout ingredients.

Aloe Vera Gel Powder

Aloe vera gel is a natural humectant, which attracts moisture from the air and supplies it to your skin. By deeply moisturizing the skin, you strengthen your skin’s elasticity, helping it appear smoother and more supple. If you notice that facial skin feels dry, this is an ingredient your skin requires.

Spirulina Powder

Spirulina is a notable superfood that provides the body with protein, thiamin, copper, niacin, iron, and more. It is also a great source of antioxidants, which help contribute to a fresh, clear complexion. Spirulina helps nourish the skin, promoting cell growth and regeneration with its amino acid content.

Matcha Powder

Made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, matcha exhibits impressive antioxidant activity. The leaves dry naturally, so no heating is involved, which better preserves their nutrients. Matcha also offers antibacterial and antibiotic properties, which help rejuvenate skin cells, promote smooth skin, and reduce fine lines.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin clay has a fine texture, so it is very gentle on the skin. It is less absorbing than French green clay, which we will discuss next. If your skin is dry or sensitive, double the amount of kaolin clay and omit the French green clay from this recipe.

French Green Clay

Rich in trace minerals, French green clay works to nourish the skin, clear impurities, and absorb excess oils. Studies show that this clay benefits people with acne because it helps to remove blackheads and germs in pores. It also tightens pores and promotes overall skin rejuvenation. The green color is attributed to the centuries-old plant matter, from which French green clay is made. It also contains iron oxide, which helps draw out toxins from the skin.

Honey Powder

Honey exhibits antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help soothe inflammation. The antioxidants in honey support cell regeneration and strengthen the skin. Just like aloe vera, honey is a natural humectant, so it helps trap moisture into the skin and add shine to your complexion.

DIY Matcha Clay Face Mask

Ingredients:

 • 1.4 ounces French green clay
 • 1.4 ounces kaolin clay
 • 0.7 ounces goat milk powder
 • 0.35 ounces matcha powder
 • 0.35 ounces honey powder
 • 0.17 ounces spirulina powder
 • 0.04 ounces aloe vera gel powder
 • 0.02 ounces allantoin

Instructions:

 • First of all, a digital scale to make your life easier. Weigh out the different powders and place them all in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
 • After mixing the powders thoroughly, Pour the mixture into an airtight container and store in a cool, dark place. You don’t want this to be exposed to sunlight or a heat source.
 • When ready to use, put two teaspoons of the powder into a small mixing bowl and stir in one teaspoon of water. Continue stirring until you achieve a smooth paste.
 • Using a brush or spatula, apply the mask to your face, making sure to avoid the lips, hairline, eyes, and eyebrows.
 • Rinse with warm water and a washcloth after 10 minutes. You can then apply a toner and moisturizer.

]]>

This isn’t your average body scrub because it doesn’t contain average ingredients. We’re taking your skin care up a notch with this striking scrub that is naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, lipids, active enzymes, and amino, nucleic, and fatty acids. The walnut hull powder works to exfoliate while the coconut oil is loaded with vitamin E and other soothing compounds that lock moisture into the skin.

Gram for gram, spirulina is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. It is a blue-green algae that is a complete protein, containing all of the essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own. It is also rich in B-vitamins, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, but how does this benefit your skin? Can you even use it on your skin? Yes, and it may reduce early signs of aging by enhancing collagen production.

How Does Spirulina Benefit The Skin?

According to a 2019 study, spirulina may increase growth factors in dermal fibroblast cells, which are responsible for creating collagen. This explains why seaweed face masks have grown in popularity. Seaweed’s ability to help increase collagen may have a tightening effect, but more studies are necessary on this.

Spirulina is also rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties, which researchers attribute to the high presence of antioxidant compounds. These antioxidants fight free radicals, preventing skin damage that contributes to wrinkles and early signs of aging. Phycocyanin is the active ingredient in spirulina, giving it the signature blue-green color. It assists with the activation of cellular antioxidant activity, according to several studies, which eliminates free radicals. Finally, spirulina may also have a brightening effect on the skin, especially when applied topically.

How Does Walnut Hull Powder Exfoliate?

Walnut hull (shell) powder is a physical exfoliant made from the meat or shell of crushed up walnuts. When you rub it into the skin, it works to slough away dead skin cells, allowing new skin cells to emerge. Dead skin cells don’t always leave on their own, so exfoliation is necessary if you want to avoid flaky patches or dryness. Because walnut hull powder can help unclog pores and rid your skin of excess oils, you are less likely to develop acne and red spots. Shrinking your pores and evening out your skin tones will also make pock marks and bumps less noticeable.

Walnut hull powder’s benefits extend beyond the face to the rest of your body. Exfoliants are typically used on facial skin, but they can also be added to body scrubs and lotions. The skin on the face is more sensitive, which calls for smaller granules. Should you want to solely use this scrub on the face, you can purchase walnut hull powder in smaller granules. If you are using it on the body, you can choose from other granule sizes.

DIY Blue-Green Algae Body Scrub

Ingredients:

 • 2.5 ounces refined coconut oil
 • 1.5 ounces hemp seed oil
 • 0.25 ounce xanthan gum powder
 • 1.5 ounces walnut hull powder
 • 0.2 ounce spirulina powder
 • 2 milliliters + 8 drops tea tree oil (optional)

Instructions:

 • Place the coconut oil in a heat-safe glass measuring cup and microwave until melted. You can use a double boiler if you prefer that method.
 • Add the hemp seed oil and xanthan gum powder to the melted coconut oil and stir to combine. You can microwave the mixture further if you need to melt more, but only if necessary.
 • Pour the walnut hull powder and spirulina into the oil and xanthan gum mixture and mix well. Drop in the optional tea tree oil and stir to combine.
 • The mixture should smell very ocean-like, but the tea tree oil should help to cut that salty, sea-like fragrance.
 • Transfer the body scrub to a jar, screw on the lid, and place in the fridge so it can set. Remove the scrub from the fridge and give it a quick mix before using.

The post Eat These Foods To Boost Collagen Levels appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Collagen supplementation has been a featured topic in the health world in recent years. The average person does not get enough collagen via his or her diet, which is why many resort to collagen supplements. Rather than consuming pills or powders made from cow hooves, there are collagen-rich foods that can help maintain optimal collagen levels.

What Is Collagen And Why Does It Matter?

In the supplement industry, collagen is commonly used in anti-aging and beauty products. As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen is more than a mere ingredient in beauty supplements. It’s essentially the glue that holds everything together, being the main component of connective tissue in muscles, tendons, bones, vessels, skin, and cartilage. As you age, the body starts producing less and less collagen, which can lead to decreased cartilage, joint pain, and wrinkles. Fortunately, it is possible to boost collagen levels by regularly consuming a variety of collagen-rich foods. Increasing the intake of collagen from dietary sources has been associated with:

 • Healthier bones
 • Muscle mass
 • Improved gut health
 • Reduced joint pain
 • Enhanced heart health
 • Improved skin elasticity

What To Eat To Increase Collagen Production?

Age isn’t the only factor that comes into play when it comes to collagen production. Unhealthy lifestyle choices (i.e. excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet, or lack of exercise) can influence how much collagen the body produces. It makes sense, then, that making healthier choices can increase collagen production. Let’s take a look at our favorite collagen-rich foods.

Almonds

Vitamin E is the most abundant antioxidant in the skin, and it works to fight free radicals that damage collagen cells. Working with vitamin C, vitamin E helps to stimulate collagen formation. While you can topically apply vitamin E oil to the skin, you can also eat almonds to replenish vitamin E levels. Additionally, almonds are rich in copper, which is a trace mineral that is necessary for the final step of collagen synthesis.

Spirulina

Spirulina is one of the most nutrient-dense foods in the plant world. This algae is rich in an amino acid known as glycine, which is an integral component of collagen. Spirulina is found in most health food stores, and it is available in powder or dried form. Add it to your green smoothies, but prepare for a slightly unusual taste if you’ve never had it. You’ll learn how to offset the taste after making a few smoothies.

Leafy Greens

As mentioned before, vitamin C and vitamin E are essential nutrients for collagen synthesis. In addition to vitamin A, leafy greens are replete with vitamins C and E. Kale, chard, spinach, green beans, arugula, broccoli, and many other dark green vegetables contain chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color. Scientific research suggests that chlorophyll nourishes cells and helps to increase procollagen, which takes place before collagen formation, in the skin.

Berries

Vitamin C is necessary for pre-collagen production, but it is also a powerful antioxidant that works to fight free radicals in the body. Antioxidants like vitamin C work to protect collagen cells from these free radicals, which are present in water, air, food, and the body. Much like kiwis or citrus fruits, berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries) are some of the best sources of vitamin C.

Garlic

Garlic seems to find its way into a lot of our articles, but it isn’t just in this article for the sake of being here. Garlic has been praised for its collagen-boosting abilities by many cultures. The sulfur in garlic is necessary for the production of collagen. Sulfur has also been known to inhibit the breakdown of collagen cells, an important quality for keeping the skin and joints healthy.

The post Alkaline Foods To Help With Inflammation appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Inflammation is one of the leading root causes of disease today. Health conditions that have been linked to inflammation include heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many others. A lot of people suffer from inflammation, but are unaware because they interpret symptoms as natural bodily processes. To fix the symptom, many people apply a bandage in the form of over-the-counter medications. This does not address the root of the problem, making it harder for healing to begin.

Inflammation & Diet: Making The Connection

Most Americans have veered from the natural practice of “eating from the earth.” By that, we mean that people have gravitated towards processed foods, refined carbohydrates, sugars, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol. All of these foods, in addition to dairy products, poultry, eggs, and hormone-raised beef, induce inflammation. It’s important to remember that the plant world contains all of the necessary nutrients people need to survive. Additionally, plant-based foods are nutritionally dense and a lot of them are alkaline.

Various fruits and vegetables fall at different places on the pH scale. A lot of animal-based foods are acidic, while plant-based foods tend to be more alkaline. It would behoove you to incorporate alkaline foods in your diet to reduce inflammation, so we’ve detailed some of our favorite alkaline foods below.

Carrots

Every root vegetable has alkalizing properties, but carrots stand out from the rest. People have been juicing carrots for years to absorb the vitamin A & C content, both of which help to reduce oxidative stress and alkalize the body. Try not to cook them too often because they become slightly acidic when cooked.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a true superfood that is packed with an amazing nutritional profile. One teaspoon of spirulina contains four grams of protein, 80% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of iron, and 800% of your RDI of vitamin A. One teaspoon is all you need per day to help alkalize your blood.

Bok Choy

Bok choy doesn’t receive a lot of attention and it isn’t on the average person’s grocery list. The antioxidants in bok choy help to naturally fight cancerous cells and reduce overall inflammation. Bok choy is also rich in vitamin C, fiber, and vitamin K. Add this cruciferous green to salads, soups, and wraps.

Dark Leafy Greens

Speaking of greens, you should include kale, collards, and chard in your diet. The dark green color of these greens means that they are rich in chlorophyll, which has a cell structure that is very similar to human cells. Chlorophyll also helps to block the body’s absorption of carcinogens, which can lead to inflammation. Make sure to get your greens!

Raw Pumpkin Seeds

Raw heirloom pumpkin seeds (not roasted or seasoned) have some amazing alkalizing properties. As the body digests them, they leave an alkaline ash in the blood, which helps the body naturally reach an alkaline state. Hemp seeds also provide this unique property. Pumpkin seeds are also great sources of chlorophyll, iron, and protein!

Matcha Tea

Matcha is pretty special because it is not heated or processed like many other forms of green tea. You can almost consider it a raw green superfood, which contains about 40 times more antioxidants than regular green tea. It is best to purchase quality matcha to absorb the chlorophyll, which can help alleviate inflammation and improve your mood. Many people brew matcha into a tea, but it can be blended into your smoothies for a subtle sweetness.
