Scalp care is having a moment, and for good reason. Too often does the hair receive more attention than the scalp, but you cannot have healthy hair without caring for the scalp. Think of your scalp as an extension of your face skin. You cleanse and moisturize your face, right? Well, the scalp deserves the same TLC!

The scalp has to put up with unwanted dry flakes and itchy patches, so you can say that it goes through a lot. More often than not, hair problems tend to result from poor scalp care. Since scalp care is having its time in the sun, we want to provide you with tips that help you keep your scalp hydrated, moisturized, and healthy.

Apply A Hair Oil Or Serum

If dry scalp or dandruff is not your primary scalp issue, you can use a scalp serum, oil, or moisturizer. These items help you replenish the scalp’s moisture, which in turn benefits the hair. You can also just moisturize with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or sweet almond oil. If you do this at the beginning of the day, make sure to wet your hair first to avoid too much oil buildup in hair strands. Use a cotton swab to apply it directly to the scalp. Experiment with a non-fragrant scalp oil, which may help add shine to your hair and control frizz.

Avoid Shampoos That Contain Sulfates

There are many hair and skin care products (typically shampoos and conditioners) made with sulfates. It is better to avoid sulfates in shampoo because they tend to be a bit harsher on the skin and can strip it of natural oils. Avoiding products that contain sodium laureth sulfate is best because it can be overly stripping. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are effective cleansers, but they strip the hair of its oil, which can cause dry scalp and strands.

Keep Dandruff Under Control

Experts suggest that dandruff is a common cause of itchy or dry scalp. Redness, thick greasy scale, and itch are common symptoms of this inflammatory scalp condition. By keeping dandruff under control, your scalp will feel a lot more comfortable. For mild dandruff, try to cleanse with a gentle shampoo in order to reduce oil and skin cell buildup. You may have to experiment with several shampoos to find the one that works best for you. If these options do not work, consult a dermatologist for further treatment. You may even require a ketoconazole shampoo three times per week to control dandruff.

Experiment With Scalp Oiling

By massaging oil into your scalp, you can help add hydration to both the scalp and dry hair strands. This is an easy at-home treatment for dehydrated hair follicles that will help prepare the hair for styling. A word to the wise: scalp oiling is not recommended for people who have dandruff, just dry scalps that require extra hydration. Scalp oiling may also help improve circulation and decongest the scalp.

Visit A Head Spa

What is a head spa, you ask? A lot of people on TikTok make videos of themselves at these places, which offer head treatments that address dryness and buildup. Head spas are very popular in Japan, where scalp-focused services are readily available. If you are dealing with dryness, visiting a head spa for treatment may offer temporary relief, but a visit to the dermatologist may be necessary to get to the root of the problem.

Exfoliate The Scalp

If you notice that you have a lot of dead skin and product buildup on the scalp, you can exfoliate the scalp, just as you would the rest of your skin. Just make sure that you do not overdo it with exfoliating. Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin, which is why you should only do it about once every one to two weeks. As a reminder, make sure to avoid exfoliating if you have psoriasis or eczema on the scalp, as the skin is already inflamed.

Use A Scalp Scrub

If you have a dry or itchy scalp, using a scalp scrub may seem counterintuitive, but it is exactly what the scalp needs in certain instances. Scalp scrubs can help get rid of dead skin cells, which can allow serums and oils to penetrate deeper into the skin for optimal hydration. A scalp scrub can also help free up the hair follicles, which may increase hair growth.

It seems that the beauty industry continues to suggest new products for your skin and hair that you “absolutely need.” If you have a difficult time managing facial skin, hair, or scalp, then you may quickly purchase these items in hopes of remedying the issue(s). What you end up with is a cabinet full of masks, oils, exfoliants, serums, creams, lotions, and more. Is there an end to this madness?

Believe it or not, and we are not about to sell you on a product, but scalp serums make up a big part of this beauty shift. There are buzz-worthy formulas and ingredients in products, but are they really necessary? If you deal with certain scalp issues, though, you may benefit from using a simple scalp serum. We’ll detail three signs that may make you want to consider a scalp serum

Flakes Or Dryness

It’s possible to see two types of flakes on the scalp: dandruff and dryness, the former of which calls for targeted treatment, such as social shampoos. Dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis, which is a form of eczema, and it is caused by Malassezia furfur, which is a type of yeast. Dermatologists note that dandruff flare-ups tend to happen for several reasons, but the most common are stress and changes in weather (both cold and humid temperatures).

A dry scalp may reveal symptoms, such as itchiness, flakes, tight skin, redness, or ashiness, some of which overlap with dandruff’s symptoms. If you see dryness-induced flakes, seek out a hydrating scalp serum that contains peptides, hyaluronic acid, and similar ingredients.

General Or Localized Thinning

Hair thinning tends to result from miniaturization, a process during which the diameter of the hair shaft decreases in size. That can result from hormone-related hair loss, stress-related hair loss, or the buildup of natural oils and products on the scalp. The latter only happens if you do not wash your hair enough, or you frequently use heavy products on the scalp, such as dry shampoo. Thinning can be a sign that your scalp needs a little extra TLC, especially with a serum focused on hair growth. Click here to make a natural scalp serum that may help you grow your hair.

Congestion Surrounding Roots

Congestion may not be the first word you think of regarding your hair and scalp, but it can happen there as well. Generally speaking, a congested scalp is full of buildup from various hair products, dead skin, and natural oils. If you get close enough to the mirror, you may see a little skin visible under the buildup between hair strands. You can also massage your scalp with your fingers and see if the buildup has broken up after.

In order to get rid of buildup, you will need a scalp serum that contains an exfoliant. Detox treatments, as some people call them, are great for cleansing the scalp and removing buildup. A scalp scrub can also be a great first step before applying a serum. Use these scalp serums before you wash your hair and consider following it up with a hydrating scalp serum, just as you would moisturize your face after using a cleansing scrub

Ultimately, you should treat your scalp a little more like skin and a little less like hair. That means you use scalp serums when necessary, especially if you notice dryness, thinning hair, or product buildup.

Nothing in this world can survive without a solid foundation. That is especially true for your hair. If your scalp is not healthy, your hair is likely to be brittle, limp, or overall unhealthy. That’s where cleansing and moisturizing the scalp comes into play. When your hair roots and follicles are healthy, you can experience better growth and shinier hair.

In case you have not seen all of the TikTok videos and Instagram reels, head spas have been increasing in popularity. The videos showcase a close up camera on the scalp to see what issues need to be addressed. What follows is a series of deep cleansing scrubs, oiling the hair, a halo rinsing apparatus, a scalp massage, and then another close up camera on the scalp to see the difference after the treatment. They are highly popular in China, Japan, and Korea, and are now more present in the United States.

Head spas are hair care treatments that aim to revitalize the hair and scalp. It may sound like a luxurious treatment reserved for special occasions, but incorporating head spa treatments into your hair care routine may have a significant impact on the health of your hair. Continue reading to learn about five benefits of head spas. You may just want to try one out to see and feel the difference.

Boosts Blood Circulation

Why is boosting circulation to the scalp beneficial for your hair? By improving blood flow, you help to deliver more nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots, which is necessary for growth and strength. That stimulation also promotes healthier hair growth, which contributes to thicker, more vibrant hair. Head spa treatments work to boost circulation to the scalp via the scalp massage, head steaming, and intense water pressure.

Balances Oil Production

An oily scalp is just as problematic as a dry scalp. Everyone wants their scalp to be just right, but we aren’t all Goldilocks. By receiving regular head spa treatments, you can help balance the scalp’s natural oil production. When you regulate this, you can help reduce the likelihood of an overly oily or excessively dry scalp, both of which are harmful to hair health. When your scalp’s oil production is balanced, you support healthy hair growth and maintain the hair’s natural luster.

Repairs Damage

If you want to increase the thickness of your hair, a head spa should be an essential component of your hair care routine. Extensive treatments work to gently remove dirt, grime, and impurities (usually general scalp buildup) from the scalp. By unclogging pores and cleaning the scalp, your hair has a better chance to grow more efficiently. A head spa works great for an oily scalp and can help supply moisture to a dry scalp, which helps reduce itchiness and dandruff.

Helps Relieve Stress

The hair and scalp are constantly under stress because of sun damage, pollution, dirt, and product buildup. A head spa is a multistep, therapeutic hair treatment and it consists of washing the hair thoroughly. It also involves an intense scalp and hair massage, which may cause you to feel tingly all over your body. If you’ve ever had a scalp massage, you know this feeling well. How amazing does it feel when someone washes your hair at a hair salon? Now, imagine that feeling amplified by 10 during a head spa treatment. This is incredibly relaxing and can help relieve stress and promote a feeling of rejuvenation. Studies have found that intensive care treatment spas increase focus, improve productivity, and reduce stress

Deep Cleansing Beyond The Surface

You can shampoo and condition your hair to clean it and make it smell nice, but that doesn’t compare to the cleansing that occurs at a head spa. Think of these treatments like a deep clean for your head. You don’t regularly clean under the couch in your home, right? Well these head spa treatments do! They aid with the removal of excess dirt, oil, and product buildup that regular washing can miss. A head spa treatment is like a detox plan for your scalp that may prevent scalp issues that hinder hair growth.

Like most people, you probably use shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. If you go the extra mile, there’s a chance that you use a deep conditioner or apply a hair mask. Maybe, on occasion, you head to the salon for a special treatment or to clarify your hair. Have you ever thought about exfoliating your scalp, or even caring for it in the proper way? Most people do not consider scalp exfoliation, despite the fact that it contributes to a healthier scalp, and potentially, improved hair growth

The Benefits Of Scalp Exfoliation

By exfoliating the scalp, you can help reduce flaking and itching, remove build up, and benefit a dry or sore scalp. Minerals, products, and more in hard water can build up on your scalp the same way they build up on hair strands. If you want your hair to shine, you take the necessary steps to care for it, and that means exfoliating your scalp from time to time. Dermatologists note that the scalp needs to be healthy to ensure new hair growth. Buildup on the scalp can clog hair follicles and lead to thinning or hair loss. Additionally, the combination of environmental pollution, dirt, and oil accumulate on the scalp on a daily basis, so it is your job to remove all of that to keep the scalp as healthy as possible

How To Exfoliate The Scalp

You can easily exfoliate the scalp in a few simple ways. You can use a sugar scrub, add quinoa to your shampoo, or use a scalp brush. Whether you use your fingertips or a scalp brush, make sure to be gentle on your scalp to avoid irritation, especially if your scalp is sensitive. Ideally, use small, circular motions when exfoliating.

Use A Scalp Brush

When you exfoliate with a scalp brush, all you have to do is use it with your regular shampoo. You can use it every time you wash or less often, depending on your needs. If you really want to ensure that you are cleansing your scalp, consider using a scalp brush every time you shampoo. Some dermatologists note that using a scalp brush may help eliminate seborrheic dermatitis, which is a common scalp condition characterized by yellow, greasy flakes and redness on the scalp.

Physical Exfoliants

These act similarly to body scrubs, in that they have mildly abrasive particles that help to exfoliate the scalp. Ingredients like sugar, salt, or even quinoa act like mild sandpaper and work to remove debris from the scalp. Even though physical exfoliants have abrasive particles, you have to do the work to gently massage them into your scalp for a few minutes to exfoliate properly.

Deep Cleansing Salt And Olive Oil Scrub

The great thing about a scrub like this is that the salt works to exfoliate, while the olive oil helps replenish the scalp with moisture. No need for synthetic additives when you have this simple scrub! This scalp scrub works to both cleanse and rejuvenate, which paves the way for improved hair health and growth.

Brown Sugar And Oatmeal Scrub

This delightful combination helps to soothe an itchy scalp and eliminate dead skin cells. Not only is this scrub a gentle way to exfoliate, but it also helps maintain a clean and balanced scalp. The beauty of this scrub lies in the synergy that exists between the oats and brown sugar. Do these two ingredients make for a great breakfast? Yes, but when you use them on the scalp, the refined grains of brown sugar naturally scrub the scalp, gently lifting away dead skin cells that may cause itchiness or irritation. The oats work to both soothe and calm the scalp, which also alleviates discomfort or irritation.

Chemical Exfoliants

Although we always encourage people to experiment with natural remedies, you may require additional strength, depending on your scalp issues. Chemical exfoliants work differently, in that they are represented by liquid-based treatments or serums that contain hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, or glycolic acid. Basically, these acids dissolve dead skin cells and the residue from hair products on the scalp. These chemical products can also use enzymes or natural oils. The main thing to understand is that you do not need to scrub the scalp if you use chemical exfoliants, as they work on their own.

Dermatologists agree that dry scalp occurs when the scalp cannot produce or hold enough moisture. Just as is common for other forms of dry skin, dry scalp can cause irritation, flaking, and itching. It can also cause your hair to look dry, given that oil from the scalp helps condition the hair.

People with dry skin tend to have an increased risk of dry scalp, meaning many of the things that cause dry skin also cause dry scalp. Such causes include excessive washing, dry air, and inflammatory skin conditions like eczema. Thankfully, there are many easy and effective ways to moisturize the scalp. Below, you’ll find the best tips to help keep your scalp moisturized and healthy.

Apply A Hair Oil Or Serum

If dandruff is not the primary cause of dry scalp, then you may have success using scalp serums or oils that provide moisture. Replenish your scalp’s moisture with one of those products at the start of your day. Before you apply the serum or oil, wet your hair first because you don’t want your strands to pick up the majority of the product. In fact, beauty experts recommend using a cotton swab to apply it to the scalp. Serums, instead of oils, may reduce the risk of clogged hair follicles, which can cause other issues.

Avoid Shampoos With Sulfates

If you care about your hair, scalp, and skin, you will do your best to avoid skin and hair care products that contain sulfates. Some shampoos can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leaving it irritated and dry. Shampoos that do not contain sulfates are usually much gentler on your hair and scalp. If you have mild dandruff, consider cleaning daily with a gentle shampoo. If that doesn’t fix the issue, you may require a medicated dandruff shampoo. You may even need to experiment with more than a single shampoo or hair care product to address the issue.

Cut Back On The Number Of Products You Use

Instead of adding more products to your hair and scalp care routine, you may need to take a step back and leave some out. If you use a wide variety of products, try to simplify your hair care routine. Eliminate harsh ingredients and chemicals, opting for a more natural and streamline approach instead. Too many products can mess with the pH balance of the scalp and create additional issues that you don’t want.

Incorporate A Scalp Scrub

A scalp scrub may not seem like the correct choice if your scalp is dry, but your scalp may need it in certain instances. Much like exfoliating your skin, scrubbing your scalp can help to remove dead skin cells and excess build-up. That process can make it easier for oils and serums to penetrate deeper into the skin for optimal hydration. Scalp scrubs also help free up hair follicles for better growth.

Exfoliate Your Scalp Every One To Two Weeks

Although a scalp scrub can aid exfoliation, you may not require one to address your situation. Another thing to note is that you do not want to over-exfoliate, and avoid exfoliation if you have eczema or psoriasis. A scalp massage brush may dilate blood vessels under the skin, which may encourage hair growth. If you use a scalp scrub during a massage with this brush, you may help slough away dead skin cells, oils, and anything else clogging your hair follicles.

Try Scalp Oiling

If you regularly massage oil into your scalp, you may help address dryness or build-up. Scalp oiling is especially beneficial for dehydrated hair follicles, and it preps the hair for styling. If you have dandruff, however, avoid scalp oiling. This is a process that you should only do if your scalp is in need of more moisture because it helps boost circulation and decongests the scalp.

Visit A Head Spa

Depending on where you live, a head spa may not be accessible to you. A head spa basically offers treatments that address things concerning your scalp. Think of it like giving your scalp a facial! These places stem from the Japanese practice, where scalp-centric services are offered at many salons. A visit to a head spa can be beneficial, but may only provide temporary relief if your scalp concerns are more serious.

Everyone uses hair care products. The combination of shampoo, conditioner, treatments, gel, and more, in addition to pollution, sebum, dandruff and dust, can cause build-up on the scalp. If the hair follicles are clogged and cannot breathe, the scalp can become unhealthy and irritated. Just like the skin, the scalp requires exfoliation to remain healthy and encourage optimal hair growth.

When you regularly cleanse the scalp with an exfoliating scrub, you can help transform an itchy dry scalp into a nourished one. According to hair care experts, exfoliating the scalp can wake up the follicles, encouraging hair growth in the process. This is because the scalp requires stimulation and blood circulation, and massaging an exfoliating scrub into it can aid those two processes.

What Are The Benefits Of A Scalp Scrub?

If you have a dry scalp, which is fairly common, a scalp scrub may be very helpful. Tiny flakes that you see are dead skin cells, and an occasional scalp scrub may prevent them from accumulating. The scalp has a constant renewal process of skin cells, but using a scalp scrub can aid that natural process, especially if you regularly see those dry flakes on your shoulders or hair strands.

If you haven’t already noticed, dryness is the common theme here. If you notice larger, more oily and yellowish flakes, a scalp scrub will not fix the issue. In fact, you’ll need a dedicated anti-dandruff routine to solve the problem. If that isn’t your issue, massaging a scalp scrub into your head may improve hair growth. Research is limited on this subject; however, one study observed 340 people with androgenetic alopecia who massaged their scalps twice daily over the course of two months. Of the group that performed these massages, 69% reported that hair loss either stabilized or improved.

In a 2018 study, researchers proved the link between scalp health and hair growth/quality. The study found that scalp exfoliation increased hair fullness and reduced hair shedding, all while controlling scalp malassezia levels. Malassezia is a type of yeast that can damage hair follicles.

Are There Drawbacks To Scalp Scrubs?

The hair is in its most fragile state when wet. That reason is the primary drawback to scalp scrubs. You should use a scalp scrub mid-shower when your hair is wet. Massaging around the roots, especially if using physical exfoliation, creates a lot of friction around the hairs, which has the potential to induce damage. When the hair is damaged, you are more likely to experience breakage.

Some beauty experts suggest that a scalp scrub does not effectively remove product build-up on the scalp. This may have to do with the type of exfoliant you make the scalp scrub with, though. If you find that the scrub is irritating or too intense for your scalp, you can stop using it right away. Additionally, don’t exfoliate with a scalp scrub every day. Ideally, you should only exfoliate the scalp once or twice a week at most. Massage is perfectly fine, but exfoliating too often can cause other scalp health issues.

Deep Cleansing Sugar Scalp Scrub

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a bowl, stir to combine, and then transfer that mixture to a jar.
  • While in the shower, wet your hair and section it off for easy application. Take about one teaspoon or so of the scrub and gently massage it into your scalp.
  • Massage in a circular motion, making sure that you do not over-exfoliate. It’s very important to treat the scalp gently because too much exfoliation can cause irritation.
  • Rinse off the scrub after a minute or so and shampoo with a paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo.

Scalp scrubs are exactly what they sound like: scrubs for your scalp. Just like the body, your scalp needs exfoliation to help remove dirt, excess oil, dead skin cells, and built-up product. If you don’t regularly cleanse the scalp, all of that build-up can gather at the root of the hair and prevent hair growth.

Why Use A Scalp Scrub

The glands on the scalp have a similar function to those on the face: they produce oil (sebum) that maintains healthy skin and hair. Your regular shampoo routine may not be enough to cleanse the scalp if glands produce too much oil. That’s where a physical exfoliant enters the equation. If you think about it, scrubs help reduce potential irritation and dandruff that stems from excess oil production. In fact, a 2018 study found that a healthy scalp translates to healthy hair growth

There are many ways to exfoliate the scalp, but you ideally want to use ingredients that are gentle and rich with nutrients. Coffee grounds work to naturally exfoliate the scalp to encourage healthy hair growth. Read on to learn more about how coffee can benefit your scalp and hair

Exfoliation

A 2013 study suggests that the substances in coffee work to promote healthier skin by way of removing dead skin cells. Caffeic acid, a powerful antioxidant, in coffee may boost collagen levels and reduce premature aging cells. Scrubbing the scalp with coffee grounds also works to improve blood circulation. According to studies, improving circulation to the scalp encourages the growth of new hair. In order for new hair to grow, though, you have to first remove build-up that can clog pores.

Helps Restore Hair & Scalp pH Levels

The hair and scalp naturally have a lower pH value, meaning they are more acidic. Studies confirm that hair fibers have a pH of 3.67, while the scalp has a pH of 5.5. Anything below a pH of 7.0 is considered acidic, while anything above that is basic, or alkaline. If you use hair products that have a higher pH value than the hair and scalp, you may experience frizziness, dryness, or dullness. Because coffee is naturally acidic, applying coffee grounds to your hair and scalp may help rebalance the pH levels of the hair and scalp.

May Restore Hair Growth And Appearance

As mentioned earlier, coffee may help stimulate hair follicles, which may help accelerate hair growth. Caffeine helps to increase blood circulation to the scalp, allowing more nutrients to reach the scalp efficiently. Ultimately, this results in quicker and healthier hair growth. If your hair looks dull or dry, coffee can also help liven it up. The flavonoids in coffee, in addition to promoting healthier hair growth, may leave the hair looking smooth, soft, and shiny.

Coffee Scalp Scrub

Ingredients:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Olive oil
  • Peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Brew a cup of coffee with coffee grounds, reserving the coffee grounds to use for the scalp scrub. You can drink the coffee if you want.
  • Take one tablespoon of the used coffee grounds and add them to a small bowl or jar. Pour in one tablespoon of olive oil and 2 drops of peppermint essential oil and mix well.
  • While you are in the shower, take a small amount of the scrub and gently massage it into your scalp for 30 seconds. Rinse it off and wash away with your favorite shampoo.
  • If you feel that the coffee grounds are stuck in your hair after your shower, just brush your hair once it dries and the coffee grounds will come off easily.

A common complaint for most people during summer is that hair falls out more than usual. It can be frightening to look down at the drain after a shower and see a giant collection of hair strands. It’s unfortunate, but summertime hair loss is quite common. The good news is that you can easily manage it with a series of natural remedies.

It’s completely natural for hair follicles to be in a “resting phase,” also known as telogen effluvium, during summer. In fact, the hotter temperatures during July and August can cause an additional 10% of hair follicles to enter this resting phase. This resting phase is often temporary and usually the result of a stressful experience. When you add the drying effects of sun exposure, salt water, chlorine, etc. to the equation, you can expect to lose more hair.

Maintaining a healthy head of hair involves more than regular cleansing, nourishing, conditioning, and protection. Eating habits, stress levels, drying techniques, and hair styles can influence whether or not hair falls out at an accelerated rate. It’s normal to experience regular hair shedding on a daily basis, but noticeable hair loss must be addressed. If you notice that large clumps of hair fall out, consider discussing this issue with a dermatologist or primary care doctor. To learn about natural ways to prevent excess hair loss during the summer months, however, continue reading.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera has myriad healing properties, and various cultures continue to use the plant in a series of natural remedies. It offers notable anti-inflammatory properties and may even help balance the pH of the scalp. Drinking 100% fresh aloe juice can strengthen hair follicles internally, but you can also apply the raw gel topically. Applying fresh aloe vera gel to the scalp works to counteract the damage from excess heat. Additionally, it may relieve dandruff because it hydrates the scalp and exhibits anti-fungal properties.

Air-Dry Whenever Possible

The weather is already hot, so there is no need to add more heat to your hair. Regular blow-drying can weaken hair, making hair shafts soft and breakable. After washing the hair, it’s best to gently pat it dry with a towel and then let it be. Run a comb through it only after it is completely dry. It’s also a good idea to avoid heat-styling during summer.

Focus On Diet

Most people fail to realize the integral role diet plays in regards to optimal hair health. To keep hair strong and healthy, focus on consuming foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, zinc, niacin, vitamin D, and biotin. Nutritional deficiency can negatively impact hair growth and hair structure. Compromising the integrity of your hair can lead to excessive hair loss, especially when hair is more prone to falling out as a result of hotter temperatures. Warm Coconut Oil Massages Are Key

The soothing warmth of melted coconut oil not only feels amazing, but it also nourishes your hair. According to several studies, coconut oil works to reduce protein loss in both undamaged and damaged hair. You can use it as a pre- or post-wash regimen. Massaging coconut oil into the scalp works to increase circulation, which contributes to the growth of new hair. If you add essential oils to the coconut oil, you may notice an improvement in the quality of your hair. Click here to learn about which essential oils promote healthy hair growth

Keep The Scalp Clean

When hotter temperatures strike, the sweat starts to pour. Combine sweat with air pollution (remember, there are more fires in certain parts of the country that cause unhealthy air quality) and you have a recipe for accumulation on the scalp. When you shampoo and condition the hair, make sure to use varieties that don’t contain sulphates. Some people swear by washing every day, but you can also encourage hair growth with scalp scrubs. Click here for more info about that.

Don’t forget to drink water during hotter weather. Not only does this help to hydrate the body, but it also encourages healthier hair. Dehydration can cause hair to become brittle. Remember, the body loses nutrients via sweat, so consume water-rich fruits and vegetables in addition to 2-3 liters of water per day when it is sunny outside.

Everyone is familiar with honey. People use it to sweeten teas, dressings, sauces, and marinades, but it has many therapeutic properties and uses outside the kitchen. In fact, many beauty bloggers and DIY enthusiasts endorse the fact that honey should be a staple in everyone’s beauty routine.

Is Honey Good For Your Hair?

Whether you want to strengthen hair follicles, reduce breakage, calm the frizz, or reduce dandruff, honey is the ingredient that takes your hair care game to the next level. Honey provides deep conditioning and the slightly acidic pH level works to balance the scalp, helping you avoid dryness. Additionally, honey doesn’t strip the scalp or hair of the natural, protective oils. This means that your scalp stops producing excess oil, which happens as a result of chemical shampoos ridding the scalp of its natural oils. Finally, honey makes it so that your hair is softer and less frizzy.

Note: When you decide to use honey on your hair, it is very important to use raw organic honey.

Honey Helps You Avoid Hair Breakage

Your hair contains keratin, the natural protein that strengthens your hair and gives it structure. Many hair care routines have started to incorporate protein treatments to avoid brittle hair. Now, honey contains 0.5% protein, which isn’t a substantial amount, but it does help give life to weaker strands of hair.

Honey Improves The Health Of Your Scalp

If you want your hair to be luscious and moisturized, you need to direct your attention to your scalp first. If the scalp is filled with built-up dirt, oils, or the residue from hair care products, you’ll have a difficult time keeping your hair healthy. Honey helps to combat dandruff and dermatitis because of the antibacterial and moisturizing properties. Additionally, the antiseptic properties of honey keep the scalp bacteria-free, reducing your risk of scalp infections.

Honey Encourages Hair Growth

The antioxidants in honey penetrate hair follicles in the scalp, and they are in charge of hair development. Studies have shown that raw honey helps to awaken resting hair follicles and supports them through healthy hair growth. A 2013 review found that honey works to encourage the growth of epithelial (skin) cells. Epithelial cells make up the many hair follicles that exist on the scalp, so start lathering your scalp in honey for better hair growth!

A Quick Note: The shampoo recipe below makes a single serving. The reason for this is to prevent spoilage. Also, the shampoo is naturally watery. Don’t question the consistency; just go with it!

DIY Honey Shampoo

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon raw organic honey
  • 3 tablespoons filtered water
  • 2 drops carrot seed essential oil (optional)
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil (optional)

  • Add the honey and water to a small mixing bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Stir in the essential oils if you want to use them, and then add the mixture to a little jar.

  • You don’t have to worry about getting the mixture on the ends of your hair. Please just focus on the scalp.
  • Rinse well and then dry your hair after the shower. There’s no need to condition after using this shampoo.

Anyone with a skin care routine knows that exfoliation contributes to clearer, smoother, healthier skin. Exfoliation is also necessary when it comes to your scalp and your ability to boost hair growth. When you scrub your scalp with natural ingredients, you help to unclog hair follicles and get rid of any built-up dead skin cells or oils that get in the way of you having luscious locks.

While hair loss is much more prevalent in men, both men and women commonly experience pattern hair loss at some point in life. Women tend to experience thinning hair or hair loss in different patterns than men, and it happens much later in life for them. Experts believe that hormonal issues play a role in female hair loss. Men, on the other hand, can lose hair early on in life and about 95% of male hair loss is due to androgenetic alopecia. This is a genetic trait that causes receding hairline, thinning hair, or pattern baldness.

The Scalp’s Role In Hair Growth

If you don’t regularly scrub your scalp, you can kiss your dreams of thick hair goodbye. Just like your skin, the scalp has a dermis and an epidermis, but it also has a large concentration of terminal hair follicles. Diet, medications, illnesses, and hormones, can alter the growth cycle of these hair follicles. According to scientific research, a healthy and balanced diet plays a major role in the health of hair follicles, hair thickness, and the survival of hair.

Why Should You Scrub Your Scalp?

As we mentioned earlier, dead skin cells, oil, dirt, and grease can accumulate on the scalp, blocking pores and contributing to unhealthy hair. Exfoliating your scalp helps to remove all that build-up and naturally balance your scalp’s pH level. When you massage the scrub into your scalp it helps to increase blood flow, and several studies show that better circulation to the scalp boosts hair growth. Try the following scalp scrubs to strengthen, grow, and protect your hair.

Pink Salt Scalp Scrub

Himalayan pink salt helps to scrub away dead skin cells and dandruff, unclogging hair follicles in the process. By exfoliating the scalp, the pink salt helps to boost the penetration of other ingredients to your hair follicles. The peppermint essential oil also aids with exfoliation, but it works to unclog hair follicles and make your hair shinier. Finally, the coconut oil helps to nourish the scalp and strengthen your hair.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Himalayan pink salt
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • melted coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Add the salt and peppermint oil to a bowl, and pour in enough melted coconut oil to form a spreadable paste. Stir the mixture and let it sit for 30 minutes to one hour before you use it.
  • Take a dollop of the mixture and massage it into your scalp. Let it sit for a few movements and then shampoo out. Use this once every two weeks.

Brown Sugar And Oatmeal Scalp Scrub

This scalp scrub is all about gentle exfoliation, which is perfect if you have sensitive skin. The combination of sugar, oats, and your favorite conditioner works to exfoliate without drying the scalp or adding excess oils. Many cultures use oats in hair care routines to facilitate hair growth and contribute to thicker hair.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rolled oats, ground
  • 2 tablespoons hair conditioner

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and mix well.
  • Get in the shower and shampoo your hair to remove any products, oil, and dead skin cells.
  • Scoop a small amount of this scrub into your hand and massage it into your scalp in a circular motion. Rinse hair thoroughly after two minutes.

Lemon Scalp Scrub

This scrub is honestly the perfect one-two punch, offering moisturizing and exfoliating properties. The citric acid in lemon is a powerful exfoliator that helps to remove built-up oils or dead skin cells. Olive oil contains vitamins A and E, two powerful antioxidants that fight free radicles, which contribute to hair loss.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

  • Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix well.
  • Before you use this scrub, make sure your hair is damp. Massage the scrub into your scalp in a circular motion and then rinse well with warm water.
  • Follow with regular shampoo and conditioner regimen.
