You don’t have to have a specific hair type or style to have healthy hair. No matter if your hair is long, short, curly, straight, or anything in between, the goal is always for it to look as good as possible. The only problem is that, if you are like most people, you get in your own way without realizing it.

If there is a goal to this article, besides helping you achieve healthier hair, it is to inform you about things you shouldn’t do that sabotage hair health. With so much information at your fingertips, there is no reason to be clueless about hair care. You clicked on the right article for achieving beautiful hair. Continue reading to learn how to do that!

Don’t Be Afraid Of Natural Products

Natural products are not hair care products that say “natural” on the label or bottle. You’d be surprised to learn that a lot of these “natural” products are not as natural as they claim to be. Natural products, such as castor oil or coconut oil, are age-old remedies that contribute to luscious, beautiful hair. These products help nourish your hair and scalp without harsh chemicals getting in the way. You can even mix these products with other natural products to make DIY hair masks

Give Your Scalp A Massage

If you want healthier hair, you need to give your scalp some love. Not only is massaging the scalp very relaxing, but it also works to stimulate blood flow, which encourages healthy hair growth. If you want to really pamper your scalp, enhance the scalp massage with a nourishing scrub. A scrub can help remove any grime or product buildup that can get in the way of healthy growth.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

A common misconception is that you need to wash your hair every day in order for it to be healthy. Washing your hair daily can strip hair strands of their natural oils and dry out the scalp. Plus, harsh chemicals in hair care products (provided you use unnatural products) are not ideal for daily use. Natural oils can keep your hair and scalp healthy, so try to wash your hair every second or third day to see if that helps. It may take a couple weeks for your hair to be on board with this process, but it will start to adjust to the change.

Take Your Vitamins

Not every hair vitamin that advertises hair growth benefits delivers on that promise. There are, however, specific vitamins that have a positive influence on hair health. Iron helps the body use protein for hair growth more efficiently, while zinc works to repair damaged hair and helps maintain sebaceous gland function on the scalp. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to fight oxidative stress, which can interfere with healthy hair growth. Biotin helps the body turn food into energy, but it also breaks down protein into amino acids that the hair needs for optimal growth.

Hair Treatments Are Your Friend

Treatments, especially with natural products, can help your hair in myriad ways. The goal of a hair treatment is to add moisture to your hair, which is great if your hair is prone to drying out from heat styling or coloring. Some treatments to maintain color can dry out your hair as well, so make sure to give your hair proper, nourishing treatment to maintain healthy moisture levels.

Get Regular Haircuts

How can you achieve beautiful hair if you cut it all the time? Well, if you damage your hair, it will continue to stay there. Going in for a trim can help you avoid split ends, and the hairdresser can help point out any problem areas. Failure to address split ends can cause them to rise higher up the hair, which can result in the need to get more haircuts the next time you head to the salon. Generally speaking, the recommendation is to visit the salon every six weeks for a short trim.

Get Condition-Specific

If you want to keep your hair soft, shiny, and manageable, you have to condition after your shampoo. Make sure that you comb the conditioner through your hair to evenly distribute it and leave it in for two to three minutes before rinsing out. Just like shampooing, though, not everyone needs to condition every time they wash their hair. Experiment to find what works best for you and continue down that path!

Dermatologists agree that dry scalp occurs when the scalp cannot produce or hold enough moisture. Just as is common for other forms of dry skin, dry scalp can cause irritation, flaking, and itching. It can also cause your hair to look dry, given that oil from the scalp helps condition the hair.

People with dry skin tend to have an increased risk of dry scalp, meaning many of the things that cause dry skin also cause dry scalp. Such causes include excessive washing, dry air, and inflammatory skin conditions like eczema. Thankfully, there are many easy and effective ways to moisturize the scalp. Below, you’ll find the best tips to help keep your scalp moisturized and healthy.

Apply A Hair Oil Or Serum

If dandruff is not the primary cause of dry scalp, then you may have success using scalp serums or oils that provide moisture. Replenish your scalp’s moisture with one of those products at the start of your day. Before you apply the serum or oil, wet your hair first because you don’t want your strands to pick up the majority of the product. In fact, beauty experts recommend using a cotton swab to apply it to the scalp. Serums, instead of oils, may reduce the risk of clogged hair follicles, which can cause other issues.

Avoid Shampoos With Sulfates

If you care about your hair, scalp, and skin, you will do your best to avoid skin and hair care products that contain sulfates. Some shampoos can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leaving it irritated and dry. Shampoos that do not contain sulfates are usually much gentler on your hair and scalp. If you have mild dandruff, consider cleaning daily with a gentle shampoo. If that doesn’t fix the issue, you may require a medicated dandruff shampoo. You may even need to experiment with more than a single shampoo or hair care product to address the issue.

Cut Back On The Number Of Products You Use

Instead of adding more products to your hair and scalp care routine, you may need to take a step back and leave some out. If you use a wide variety of products, try to simplify your hair care routine. Eliminate harsh ingredients and chemicals, opting for a more natural and streamline approach instead. Too many products can mess with the pH balance of the scalp and create additional issues that you don’t want.

Incorporate A Scalp Scrub

A scalp scrub may not seem like the correct choice if your scalp is dry, but your scalp may need it in certain instances. Much like exfoliating your skin, scrubbing your scalp can help to remove dead skin cells and excess build-up. That process can make it easier for oils and serums to penetrate deeper into the skin for optimal hydration. Scalp scrubs also help free up hair follicles for better growth.

Exfoliate Your Scalp Every One To Two Weeks

Although a scalp scrub can aid exfoliation, you may not require one to address your situation. Another thing to note is that you do not want to over-exfoliate, and avoid exfoliation if you have eczema or psoriasis. A scalp massage brush may dilate blood vessels under the skin, which may encourage hair growth. If you use a scalp scrub during a massage with this brush, you may help slough away dead skin cells, oils, and anything else clogging your hair follicles.

Try Scalp Oiling

If you regularly massage oil into your scalp, you may help address dryness or build-up. Scalp oiling is especially beneficial for dehydrated hair follicles, and it preps the hair for styling. If you have dandruff, however, avoid scalp oiling. This is a process that you should only do if your scalp is in need of more moisture because it helps boost circulation and decongests the scalp.

Visit A Head Spa

Depending on where you live, a head spa may not be accessible to you. A head spa basically offers treatments that address things concerning your scalp. Think of it like giving your scalp a facial! These places stem from the Japanese practice, where scalp-centric services are offered at many salons. A visit to a head spa can be beneficial, but may only provide temporary relief if your scalp concerns are more serious.

People who suffer from dandruff dread the signature dry flakes and itchiness. Caused by an excess of oil on the scalp, the struggle of flakiness is real. Malassezia, a yeast that occurs naturally on the scalp, feeds off the excess oil and creates dry flakes. Some people opt for “magic” elixirs or over-the-counter shampoos to help remedy the issue. Many of these products contain harmful, toxic ingredients that your scalp absorbs.

If plaguing the scalp with harmful chemicals isn’t an attractive plan of attack, there’s no need to go that route. You can choose a more natural option by incorporating essential oils into your scalp care routine. The one thing to keep in mind about essential oils is that you should not apply them directly to the skin, as they can cause severe irritation. Dermatologists recommend that you dilute essential oils in carrier oils like olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil.

There are many essential oils that have been scientifically proven to benefit the scalp. Continue reading to learn more about them.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil exhibits powerful anti-fungal properties that work to address the overactive fungal activity on the scalp. This is the origin of dandruff and targeting it can help remedy the situation. Rosemary essential oil also has astringent and decongesting properties that reduce the amount of excess oils, flakes, and build-up on the scalp. Finally, rosemary also promotes hair growth, making it an excellent ingredient to any hair care routine.

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Just like rosemary essential oil, cedarwood essential oil contains anti-fungal properties and it helps to manage oil production on the scalp. It also exhibits cleansing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent choice for people with dandruff. Cedarwood helps to soothe scalp irritation and may keep infection-causing bacteria or fungi away. This is especially important if you already have an itchy scalp.

Tea Tree Oil

The great and powerful tea tree oil is revered by many a beauty enthusiast, and for good reason. It offers powerful anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that help ward off bacteria or foreign invaders on the scalp. It helps to address the root cause of dandruff, making it top the list of essential oils that reduce itchy scalp. Tea tree oil also helps to unclog hair follicles that contain excess oil build-up, hair product residue, and dead skin cells. Although hair follicle build-up isn’t the cause of dandruff, it can worsen he problem.

DIY Dry Scalp Remedy

Ingredients:

  • 8 drops tea tree oil
  • 8 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 6 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey
  • 4 ounces almond oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a glass container (like a jar) and mix well to combine.
  • You can mix the concoction with a small whisk or simply screw on the top of the jar and shake vigorously.
  • Before you use it, shake it up and and then massage a small amount into your scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes before washing out with a natural shampoo.
  • If your scalp is very dry, you can leave the mixture on overnight and wash out in the morning.
  • This batch makes about two to three applications, but you can double the recipe for a larger batch. Keep in mind that it will stay fresh in an airtight glass jar for up to 10 days.

Coconut oil has grown in popularity due to the inherent health properties and versatility. Some people have started oil pulling with coconut oil to naturally get rid of plaque, while others solely use it for culinary purposes. Because coconut oil has natural moisturizing properties, it is ideal to apply it to your hair to help naturally detangle, fight against dandruff, and accelerate the hair growth process.

If you’re wondering how coconut oil is good for your hair and scalp, let us give you a little insight. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, medium-chain fatty acids, and antimicrobial properties, all of which work to condition the scalp and strengthen hair. Do yourself a favor and use coconut oil on your hair; you’ll thank us later. We’ve detailed how it helps your hair below.

Faster Hair Growth

Because of the vitamins and essential fatty acids that naturally exist in coconut oil, using it as a daily treatment can help to nourish the scalp and remove sebum build-up from hair follicles. About an hour or two before bed, wash your hair with all natural shampoo and conditioner. Massage melted coconut oil into your scalp and then wrap your head with a towel to leave the coconut oil on overnight.

Gets Rid Of Dandruff

Bacteria on the scalp, yeast infections, or the excessive use of chemical-rich hair products can cause dandruff. The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, which work to get rid of bacteria or viruses on the scalp. Coconut oil moisturizes the hair shaft and scalp to keep your scalp dandruff free.

Helps Detangle Hair

If you have curly hair or regularly deal with tangles or knots, coconut oil is going to become your best friend. It is good to brush your hair with organic, virgin coconut oil on the daily because it doesn’t leave any residue or long-term damage to your tresses. Using melted coconut oil, massage a little into the ends of your hair, slowly working your way towards the roots. Use a comb to help detangle your hair.

Repairs Split Ends

Split ends can be caused by the excessive use of hair straighteners, styling products, curlers, blow dryers, and more. To help repair split ends, you’ll need several ingredients that strengthen hair follicles and moisturize the scalp. You’ll need two tablespoons of organic virgin coconut oil, one tablespoon of raw honey, and five tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Mix the ingredients and apply it to your scalp and hair. Leave this on for about 30 minutes and then rinse with an all natural shampoo. Do this once a week.

Beneficial For Dry Hair

Your hair can actually absorb coconut oil more efficiently than any other oil. It also contains vitamin E, which works to moisturize hair. Because it doesn’t evaporate easily, coconut oil doesn’t let moisture escape, meaning that it can keep your hair healthy and hydrated all day!

Hair loss can be attributed to things like hormonal changes, stress, pregnancy, or lack of hair care. To help maintain healthy locks, you need to be proactive and give you hair and scalp some extra love a couple times a week.

A lot of people experiment with various products or odd techniques to help with hair growth, but how many of those actually work? We are willing to bet that many people fail to have success with whatever they try, but perhaps that is because they aren’t using the right ingredients. The DIY recipe in this article has some powerful ingredients that help to naturally stimulate hair growth. Check them out below.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, medium-chain fatty acids, and antimicrobial properties, all of which work to condition the scalp and strengthen hair. Because of the vitamins and essential fatty acids that naturally exist in coconut oil, using it as a daily treatment can help to nourish the scalp and remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.

Castor Oil

Castor oil contains antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it a great remedy to help prevent dandruff, scalp infections, or folliculitis. It contains ricinoleic acid, which works to improve circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth. Many people have experienced hair growth of 3-5 times the normal rate after incorporating castor oil into their hair care routine.

Rosemary Essential Oil

According to several studies, rosemary essential oil may help to heal nerve endings and rejuvenate nerves in the scalp, which can assist with hair growth. More studies indicate the rosemary essential oil can help protect against hair loss. It may even be as effective and healthier than minoxidil, commercially known as Rogaine.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup castor oil
  • ½ cup virgin, organic coconut oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the castor oil, coconut oil, and essential oil to a bowl and mix well. You can store this in a glass bottle with an eyedropper top.
  • It is ideal to use this serum twice a week. Take a small amount (no more than a thumbnail) of the serum and massage it into your scalp before bed, leaving it in overnight. Use a natural shampoo to wash it out in the morning.

Jojoba oil isn’t something that just hit the market. In fact, it has been used as an herbal remedy for quite some time. Frequently added to skincare or hair products, jojoba oil is one of the current “it” oils at the moment. It has been picking up steam in the health and beauty world, so let’s explore some of its uses and benefits!

The Benefits of Jojoba Oil

Non-Greasy

Because jojoba oil is closely matched to human sebum, the skin naturally and easily absorbs it. This means that you won’t feel greasy after applying it, which makes it great to use on your face. You can apply it to dry skin to help moisturize.

Matches Human Skin

As mentioned above, jojoba oil is the most closely matched oil to the natural oils that the skin produces. When your body can better absorb the oil, you have a lesser chance of your skin getting irritated. Jojoba is great if you are prone to acne.

Long-lasting Moisture

Just because jojoba oil is non-greasy, that doesn’t mean it lacks moisture. Quite the contrary, in fact! This oil can help moisturize the driest of skin for a long time, proving it can go the distance.

Great Base Oil

Jojoba oil is a great base oil, commonly referred to as a carrier oil. This means that you can mix it with essential oils for natural perfumes, DIY blends, or aromatherapy products.

Helps Calm Inflammation

If you have been searching for a natural oil to help calm inflammation without irritating you or causing more inflammation, jojoba may be the oil you seek. It doesn’t upset the skin and it has natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Uses For Jojoba Oil

Even though you know how amazing jojoba oil is, you may be wondering how to use it. Never fear, we have a list of ways to use it right here!

Makeup Remover

Rather than using chemicals to remove makeup, use jojoba oil as a natural, non-irritating cleanser. It helps to remove makeup while soothing your skin simultaneously.

Scalp Oil

When you use jojoba oil on your scalp, really massage it into your head to absorb the benefits. It actually works best if you warm it in your hands first and then massage your head to hydrate your scalp.

DIY Aromatherapy

If you feel like getting a little creative, try some DIY aromatherapy blends using jojoba oil. All you have to do is mix 4oz of jojoba oil with 10 drops each essential oil of eucalyptus, cinnamon, peppermint, camphor, and rosemary. Then add 5 drops of each essential oil of lavender, ginger and black pepper. This helps to treat muscle pain.

Groom Your Beard

Sometimes it is necessary to tame your beard so that it looks groomed and presentable. Massage a little jojoba in your beard to give your facial hair a well-groomed look. It also helps to hydrate the skin in your beard.

These health properties can help to boost your metabolism, improve your digestive system, and can even help to promote hair growth.

Cedarwood essential oil is great to have in the house because you never know when you are going to need its health benefits. If you don’t have any, you may just have to run to the store and buy some after you read this article.

You can use it topically on the affected joint(s) or you can inhale the aroma by placing it into a diffuser. Adding about 10 drops to a warm bath can also help to lessen joint pain.

Prevents Infections

Because of the strong antiseptic properties, cedarwood essential oil can be applied to wounds to help protect you from tetanus bacteria. It is often used in herbal antiseptic creams, so you don’t have to worry about it not being safe to apply directly on the wound. It helps to relieve the white blood cells and immune system of stress so that they can focus on maintaining internal health.

Natural Deodorizer

The scent of cedarwood has been known to improve self-esteem and promote togetherness. It has even been known to change a person’s outlook on life. Let it work its magic for 30 minutes before washing out. Repeat once a day until you see a difference.

Relieves Spasms

Using cedarwood essential oil can relieve a lot of spasms. It can provide relief to muscle, respiratory, intestinal, heart, and nerve spasms. You can even use it if you have restless leg syndrome. Massage the oil topically, once a day, on the area where the spasm is or inhale the aroma to provide relief

Cough Relief

If you feel congested or are suffering from a cold, cedarwood essential oil can help to relieve the irritation. Because it is an expectorant, it works to remove phlegm from your airways and lungs, resulting in natural decongestion and cough relief. Pour 10 drops of cedarwood essential oil in a bath and soak in it for at least 30 minutes for best results.

Relieves Seborrhea Symptoms

Seborrhea is caused by a malfunction in the sebaceous glands and typically results in yellow, white, or scaly looking skin near the scalp, eyebrows, inner ear, or other areas with hair follicles. You can apply the oil to the affected areas or add the oil to the bath to soak in to help remedy the condition. It helps to regulate sebum production and treat seborrhea.
