A lot of people think of meditation as a person sitting in the mountains becoming one with the universe. It’s not some lofty Hollywood trend, nor is it a practice reserved for the most elite monks. Meditation comes in many forms and committing to a daily practice can help you narrow your focus and feel more connected to the present moment. By doing so, you may lower stress levels, become more self-aware, and improve immune function.

Many spiritual traditions incorporate meditation into their teachings and practices. The actual practice of meditation does not belong to any particular religion or faith. Although it has ancient origins, it is a practice that people continue to use to establish inner peace, a sense of calm, and a healthy mind-body connection. You can easily fit meditation into your daily schedule, and it may be the practice that keeps you level-headed throughout the day. There isn’t a singular type of meditation, though. In fact, the following types of meditation can be very beneficial for beginners. Find a practice that suits your needs, or experiment with these variations until you find one that you like.

Spiritual Meditation

This practice is used in nearly all spiritual traditions and religions. There are many types of spiritual meditation, as it is just about as diverse as spiritual traditions themselves. According to a 2017 study, spiritual meditation aims to develop a deeper understanding of spiritual or religious meaning and connect that to a higher power. Christian contemplative prayer, Jewish kabbalistic practices, and Sufi dhikr are common examples. You can engage in this practice whether you’re in your home or a place of worship.

Breath Awareness Meditation

This type of meditation comes from the zazen breath awareness technique that Zen Buddhist practices teach. It is a form of meditation that is excellent for beginners. By focusing on your breath, you direct your attention away from your wandering thoughts. Even if your mind does wander, you can always bring the focus back to your breath. By practicing breath awareness meditation, you can meditate in any position you like, be that lying on the floor or sitting in a quiet place. You can even do it while showering! Ideally, though, try to practice in the same spot and at the same time every day for the most benefits.

Mindfulness Meditation

This basic meditation practice is essentially the simple act of being aware of what you are doing in the present moment, i.e. mindful. You can practice mindfulness while eating, walking the dog, brushing your teeth, or mopping your floors. Being mindful means that you are 100% invested in the activity you are doing. You do not think about anything else that may distract you or add stress to your life. Many people struggle with this, though, which is why beginners start with a more formal mindful meditation practice. Set aside time to sit and focus on your breathing, even if you start with five minutes. Learn how to redirect your thoughts when you get distracted, allowing them to come in and out like waves up a beach. This practice is a great tool to help you improve self-control and your ability to focus on the present moment.

Body Scan Meditation

As the name suggests, this form of meditation is about observing your body closely, noting any possible abnormalities. Do you notice muscle pain or stiffness in certain joints? Note what your body is taking in and letting go. This is a great way to connect your body and your conscious self. It also helps people who don’t know how to express their emotions physically. To perform body scan meditation, simultaneously isolate one part of the body, tensing and releasing the tension. In order to experience the benefits of this practice, you have to establish a regular routine. You should notice a decrease in tension and stress via regular practice.

Open Awareness Meditation

Open awareness meditation is the opposite of breath awareness meditation, in that you focus on simply being instead of doing. Some people find this practice to be more complex because of the open-minded concept. Focus-based meditation can stabilize and frame the mind to keep it from wandering. Open awareness meditation is great if you have an active mind because you keep the body in a state of relaxation. Remain still in your practice, but allow your thoughts to flow freely. You can examine them if you want to help better understand how you process thoughts and emotions.

Movement Meditation

Walking, yoga, tai chi, gardening, and any form of gentle movement counts as a movement meditation practice. These activities aim to improve mindfulness, but the concept behind movement meditation is that gentle physical movements ground you in the present. Focus on how the body moves and the sensations you feel from these movements. This form of meditation is very similar to mindful meditation, only this involves movement. That makes this form of meditation beneficial for people who find it difficult to concentrate while sitting still.

Training the mind by way of meditation is similar to keeping the body fit by exercising. The mind is a muscle and can be exercised, but it requires work and effort. Meditation seems difficult at first, especially when people don’t know how to approach it. People can’t just sit down, close their eyes, and tune out the world like a practicing monk on the first go-around.

What Is Meditation?

First off, meditation isn’t magic and you don’t have to belong to any religion to practice meditation. Meditation is to practicing Buddhists what sports are to Americans; it is an umbrella term that involves many variations and practices. There are various styles of meditation, all of which involve training the mind and focusing on breath. Researchers have studied meditation and concluded that regular practice helps to lower heart rate, reduce anxiety and stress, improve sleep, lower blood pressure, and increase circulation.

Mindfulness Meditation

When you start meditating, you will inevitably have thoughts come crashing into your mind like waves on the sand. Mindfulness meditation encourages people to follow wandering thoughts. The goal behind this is to teach people to not get involved with their thoughts and remain judgment-free. Become aware of the each thought and follow it out of the mind. This practice can help people identify changes in mood or make them more aware of human tendencies.

Concentration Meditation

This type of meditation involves focusing on a single point, be it an affirmation, mantra, candle flame, or your own breath. It is difficult to focus the mind without wandering off to other thoughts or fantasies, but you can easily identify when your mind begins to wander by focusing on a single object. Don’t pursue these thoughts; simply let them go in order to improve overall concentration.

Transcendental Meditation (TM)

This specific form of silent meditation involves the use of a silent mantra, and it is practiced for 15-20 minutes twice daily. The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi created the TM technique and movement in India in the mid-1950s. He taught thousands of people from 1958 to 1965, and millions of people worldwide began practicing TM by the early 2000s. It is a non-religious movement that helps reduce stress, develop the self, and aid with natural relaxation.

How To Meditate

Step 1: Find A Place To Sit

You don’t need to purchase a fancy pillow or feng shui a room in your house for an optimal meditation session. You can sit in a public park or quiet room in your house. If you experience back pain, the support of a chair or cushion may be useful. You can also lie comfortably if that is more feasible.

Step 2: Body Positioning

The common image of a meditating person is sitting in the lotus position surrounded by candles. That’s not you and you shouldn’t try to be that when you first start meditating. Find a position that feels comfortable. Keeping the back straight is a priority, but sit or lay down (as we previously mentioned) in a position that doesn’t cause back pain. Close your eyes and start breathing, making no effort to control your breath. Just breath naturally.

Step 3: The Process Of Meditating

People are lost in thought every day, even if they don’t know it. The idea behind meditation is to quiet the mind and focus your attention on the present moment. How do you do this? Well, now it is time to focus on the breath. Your breath is a constant and you follow it with each inhale and exhale. As you inhale, feel the air fill your chest and up into your head. Let the breath go and expel the carbon dioxide from your body. As you continue this deep breathing technique, you may notice that your fingers start to tingle, or that you feel a little light-headed. You are flooding the body with oxygen and paying attention to the present moment, and this is good!

Step 4: Waking Up

As you take your last breath, fully exhale and sit in the moment before opening your eyes. You don’t need to move right away; rather, you can sit there with your eyes open until you are ready to stand back up and resume your day.

For beginners, start meditating for five minutes at a time. You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew by attempting to meditate for 20 minutes on your first try. With each passing day, you can meditate for a minute or so longer. A 20-minute meditation session per day is more than sufficient and you should have the goal to master those 20 minutes.

Obesity and the health problems associated with it are perpetually on the rise. People constantly look for ways to improve their health, but the process can be overwhelming because of the many fad diets, workout programs, and detox packages. What will work for your body? Let us introduce you to the concept of intermittent fasting.

A lot of people try fasting diets, where they only drink water or apple cider vinegar tonics. Some people don’t even drink that much, which can actually do more harm than good. The body’s metabolism can slow and hold on to fat when you aren’t supplying it with calories and nutrients. Because the body doesn’t know when it will get food again, it holds on to the weight you are trying to lose.

What Is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is the practice of fasting and then eating for specific time periods. The amount of time you fast for and the amount of time you eat for can vary. More and more research supports that this method of fasting produces weight loss benefits, reduces inflammation, and helps to benefit the cardiovascular system. Additional research suggests that calorie cutters are more likely to drop out of that diet than those who intermittently fast.

When you fast for a certain amount of time, the body can begin to enter the beginning stages of ketosis. The body burns fats to make ketones and fatty acids to satisfy your caloric needs. You don’t get to eat whatever you want while you are intermittently fasting, though. This is a common misconception. You still have to eat a well-balanced diet during the eating times.

This Is Not A New Concept

From an evolutionary standpoint, intermittent fasting makes sense. Having access to food at all hours of the day is a relatively new concept. Food wasn’t always easy to come by because people had to hunt and gather. Even the Ancient Greeks would fast intermittently because they believed it helped maintain cognitive function. Fasts are still used by major world religions, for example, during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. During this holiday, people only eat before the sun comes up and after the sun sets, and they don’t eat during the day.

Time-restricted eating leads to a reduced caloric intake because people only eat at certain times of the day. In order for the body to burn more fat, you cannot eat gigantic meals that are each 1,000 calories or more; that defeats the purpose of the diet program. This eating plan will not lead the body into a state of ketosis. In order to reach this state, it is ideal to consume lots of healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, nuts & seeds, and coconut oil) and very few carbs when eating is allowed.

The Benefits of Autophagy

Autophagy is a natural process in which cells and cell components are recycled. This typically happens when a person hasn’t eaten for a while. During this process, the cells that get destroyed are typically fat cells and diseased cells, which get replaced with healthier new ones. Provided you are eating a well-balanced diet, intermittent fasting helps you obtain sufficient nutrients during eating times to help replace the cells that get destroyed during autophagy.

Where To Start

There are several methods to consider when beginning an intermittent fasting program. Some people prefer the 5:2 plan because there are a lot of studies about it. For two days a week, either consecutive or spaced out, you only consume 500 calories a day, focusing on healthy fats and plant proteins. You could have one cup of steel cut oats for breakfast (170 calories), a quarter cup of almonds as a snack (200 calories), and a four-ounce, wild-caught cod fillet for dinner (100 calories). You don’t have to worry about calorie counting during the other five days of the week, but it is ideal to focus on plant-based foods that are high in nutrients.

Another option is to do the 16:8 plan, where you fast for 16 hours a day and eat during an eight-hour window. People on this plan typically eat between the hours of 9am-5pm, and they fast between 5pm-9am. Which plan you choose is entirely up to you. We hope this information helps and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below.

If you have just experienced the loss or death of a loved one, may you find comfort and understanding within this article.

Death is a transition. It is the final stage of human life, but not spiritual life. Death has been given the stigma of something negative, something that spells the end for all life, which is not true.

When the spirit or soul leaves the body, it moves forward to the next dimension that just happens to be different than the one we inhabit. The next dimension (and subsequent higher dimensions) does not require a physical vessel like life on Earth. In these other dimensions, the soul is free to travel without a hindrance. some may experience this phenomenon while dreaming or astral traveling (out of body experience) to the point where the soul is outside of your physical body.

A big problem we make here on this planet is that we confuse the physical body as the real person or soul instead of knowing that the flesh body is only a vessel that contains the soul for its duration on this realm in a particular lifetime (as there are subsequent lifetimes). Living and dying are nothing new to us. We have died and reincarnated numerous times.

You may have heard that “we are spiritual beings experiencing a physical existence”, and this is very true. Regardless of how you may define death or transition, it is the emotional tie to the physical manifestation of the soul that humans find most difficult to process.

We get caught up on the physical shell and miss the fact of the soul, so when the present life’s body ceases to exist, we become saddened and only so due to the fact that we became attached to the body rather than the soul.

The soul (the real person or entity) never dies nor can it. It simply changes outfits or bodies. It’s like having a closet full of outfits and considering each day as a lifetime. The soul is merely changing outfits (body) for each new day (lifetime).

It is very sad and unfortunate that religion does not deal in or with metaphysics or the occult interpretation of existence. The few exceptions are Gnostic Christianity, Jewish Kabbalahism, and Islamic Sufism.

What is Grief?

Grief is an emotional reaction to loss. People can experience grief at the loss of a pet, a person (living or dead), a lifestyle (such as divorce), or anything else. It is most commonly, however, associated with the death of a loved one, and the feelings can be overwhelming. At some death transitions or funerals, survivors may faint or collapse. Some try to get inside the coffin or casket with the deceased. People who talk and act like this are not grounded in life or do not accept life’s natural processes.

Grieving for a deceased loved one, especially a parent, spouse, or child, is understandable, but it’s probably the last thing the deceased wanted you to endure. They are just fine on the other side, but that can be hard to grasp immediately. They are receiving everything they need, depending on their specific circumstances, predicated upon their most recent Earth incarnation experience.

No one who transitions is ever alone. Ever! The person has all the assistance they need on the other side. Reference the following:

“As death approaches, relatives or friends who have gone on before gather around the dying person to assist in the imminent transition from the physical to the nonphysical state. Frequently the dying can see them already, for at the time of imminent death the bonds between conscious and unconscious are very loose. Dr. Karlis Osis of the American Society of Physical Research did some valuable studies on bedside observations of the dying in various hospitals. In these reports, mention is made frequently of the alleged presence in the hospital room of a long-dead relative or friend whom only the dying person can see or hear. In the past, such phenomena have been brushed aside as “hallucinations of the dying”, implying that all patients in their terminal stage are mentally incompetent and therefore their testimony is not to be taken at face value.” “Life Beyond.” Holzer, Hans., p. 136-137

Letting Go

You are here for your soul’s purpose and for a higher spiritual reason and lesson. Release the deceased person! Let them go on for their soul’s purpose.

Hold the warm and loving memories of the person in your heart and go on about your life’s business, never losing sight of that love.

In conclusion, death is not the end of life. Please reference the following:

“When we are alive, we define ourselves by what we can see, hear, or touch. We are tissue, bone, and matter. When people die and we can no longer connect with them through our senses, we cannot help but to think that they no longer exist. This is not true. As Albert Einstein proved decades ago, everything is made of energy. Energy cannot be destroyed; it can only change form. You cannot ‘not’ exist, you can only transform. Death cannot end your life, it can only enhance who and what you are.” – Cyndi Dale

Circumcision is a widely practiced yet somewhat controversial surgery that is usually performed on infant boys. During the surgery, the doctor removes either some or all of the penile foreskin. Circumcision has a historical long tradition and is advocated for by many different religions, although it may also be performed for social or cultural reasons. There are also some health benefits, although potential drawbacks as well.

History

The exact roots of circumcision are not known with certainty. There are many different theories posed about circumcision that suggest it could have functioned in a variety of ways, including as a:

  • Hygienic measure
  • Rite of passage indicating a boy’s entrance into adulthood
  • Gesture of symbolic castration for slaves or enemies
  • Religious sacrifice

Religion and Circumcision

Different religions have different perspectives about circumcision. Some religious mandate it, while others formally condemn it. In Judaism, for instance, it is considered a commandment from God. It is also widely practiced in Islam and in the Coptic faith; the World Health Organization estimates that of the 664,500,000 men aged fifteen and older who are circumcised, around 70% are Muslim. The Roman Catholic Church formally banned circumcision in 1442 in the Ecumenical Council at Basel-Florence, but has today adopted a neutral stance about circumcision for medical reasons.

In South Africa, churches vary on their stances. Some Christian churches view it as a pagan ritual and oppose the practice, while others (such as the Nomiya church in Kenya) make membership contingent upon circumcision.

Statistics about Circumcision

Statistics for the number of circumcised males vary widely, but it is thought that somewhere between one-sixth and one-third of men from around the world are circumcised. It is most commonly performed on men between the age of infancy and early twenties.

Levels of circumcision are generally low in Europe, Latin America, and Asia (with the exception of the Philippines, parts of Southeast Asia, and South Korea). Although estimates from Spain, Colombia, and Denmark suggest that less than 2% of men are circumcised, the data for the United States indicates that 75% of men are circumcised.

Medical Benefits and Concerns

Studies examining the perceived benefits and drawbacks have received varying results. One of the few non-debated benefits is that circumcision reduces the risk of HIV transmission among heterosexual men. However, it is only efficacious in reducing the transmission from a woman to a man. It has been shown to have little to no effect in reducing the risk of male-to-male or man-to woman HIV transmissions. The WHO has advocated circumcision as a cost-effective means to prevent HIV transmission, as long as the surgeries are performed by experienced doctors and the patients give their consent.

Circumcision has also been associated with a reduced risk of urinary tract infections and for penile skin conditions. Some studies suggest that neonatal circumcision reduces the risk of contracting penile cancer, although it should be noted that penile cancer occurs relatively infrequently.

Since the time of the Egyptians, circumcision has been used to reinforce penile hygiene. In 1999, however, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated that “there is little evidence to affirm the association between circumcision status and optimal penile hygiene.” Uncircumcised men can have perfectly clean and healthy penises, while some circumcised men may experience medical issues with their penis.

Ethical Issues

There have been questions raised about the morality of removing healthy, functioning genital tissue from people too young to give their consent. Some organizations argue that infant circumcision is morally wrong because it infringes upon the rights of the individual and represents a human rights violation.

Others worry that circumcision inflicts unnecessary pain upon young children and could cause psychological issues later in life.

To conclude, circumcision is an ambiguous issue. There is no clear “right” or “wrong” answer.

One of the more inspirational quotes in the Scriptures is found in Matthew 19:26 and it features Jesus as saying, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Now even though Matthew 19:26 was in reference or regards to a camel going through the eye of a needle, it still has relevance to all matters outside of it. It really does, because no matter with the situation or problem is or may be, truly and surely, with God ALL things are possible! That’s right! ALL THINGS (within the boundaries of Universal or Divine law) are possible with God, and I don’t care what they are.

You can’t be a devout and/or true Christian and embrace God’s word in the Bible (which includes Matthew 19:26) and turn around and believe man’s FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and/or CDC (Center For Disease Control) that there are incurable diseases such as cancer, AIDS, and genital herpes. It simply means that there’s no known cure YET.

How can you believe that with God all things are possible but believe that cures for so-called incurable diseases are not possible? This is contradictory thinking and/or believing!

Matthew 19:26 clearly expose the falsity of so-called incurable diseases because with God all things are possible including healing of so-called incurable disease. As Matthew 19:26 says, “…with men it is impossible…”

With man (Western medical doctors), healing from genital herpes, AIDS, cancer and other diseases are in fact impossible to heal or cure!

Worldly knowledge cannot cure or heal any degenerative disease, but spiritual knowledge can. In fact, it is worldly knowledge predicated upon worldly living that plays a major role in the development of most diseases. Degenerative diseases are ‘civilization’ diseases, diseases that result from being civilized.

It doesn’t matter about civilization or being civilized. What matters most is being conscious! Consciousness is the key! Not civilization! And the great thing about consciousness is that all human beings can become conscious.

The world commonly acts against God and God’s divine, higher law and this is the origin of man’s diseased state. If we truly obeyed God we wouldn’t be getting sick at the rates we do. We just wouldn’t!

All disease first manifests in the spiritual or energetic realm and lastly manifests in the physical realm. Disease exists on the physical realm, emotional realm, spiritual realm, the mental realm, and the astral realm. Every disease has five points of healing, so healing must encompass every realm of existence for true healing.

There is no healing whatsoever without God or Source. With God, ALL things are possible and this includes healing or being so-called cured from so-called ‘incurable’ diseases.

Reclaim your mind! With God all things are possible! Believe it! Achieve it!

The English word ‘celibacy‘ derives from the Latin word ‘caelebs’, meaning “unmarried.” As most people know, to be celibate means to refrain from engaging in any kind of sexual activity with another person.

Celibacy has a long tradition stretching back hundreds of years. One of the first recorded celibates in history was Pythagoras, who established a small community of like-minded people to study philosophy in the sixth century. Pythagoras believed that engaging in physical relationships was distracting to the mind, and supported celibacy as a way to strengthen and improve philosophic thoughts.

People choose to be celibate for a variety of personal or religious reasons. Some, like Pythagoras, believe that refraining from sexual activity improves one’s mental thought processes. Others who are ascetic may feel compelled for spiritual or personal reasons to renounce a variety of behaviors, such as physical relations with the opposite sex, drinking, smoking, etc.

Religion is one of the most common motivators for celibacy. Historically, many different religions have demanded that its leaders be celibate. For Catholicism, the church instituted mandatory celibacy for all priests in the twelfth century. There is no clear-cut answer for why they decided to mandate celibacy. Religious scholars suggest that it may be related to the example that Christ set, the biblical writings of Paul that endorsed celibacy, or the practical fact that no children existed to inherit property away from the Church.

Many religions are transitioning away from celibacy. Buddhism, for example, traditionally upheld celibacy as the ideal for its monks and nuns. Yet public disapproval was so great that in 1872 state laws were enacted that allowed the clerics to marry and have children. In some branches of Catholicism, moreover, celibacy is expected for bishops but not necessary for all of the priests. More and more, exceptions are being made.

Interestingly, not all religions view celibacy as a positive thing. For instance, celibacy is actually discouraged in the Islamic religion. Marriage is encouraged for everyone, and raising a religious family is seen as one way to worship God.

For people who wonder if celibacy is healthy, that is a personal matter that everyone must decide individually. There are certainly times when it may seem better to abstain from having sex, at least for a while. For instance, after a long relationship breaks up, people may turn to fleeting physical relationships as a distraction from their suffering. They may view such interactions as good ways to get over the former partner. Perhaps the break-up has instilled feelings of inadequacy, which are then distilled by engaging in brief hook-ups with others.

Yet it is never a good sign if you come to depend on physical relationships to feel happy and confident. Do not be the kind of person who requires the affection of a stranger to feel validated. Do not seek out a physical relationship with someone just because you are feeling lonely.

When it comes down to it, you are the only person who can decide what is right for you. It is your body; you get to make the decisions. For those who feel conflicted over what is right for them, however, there are a few issues that you should consider.

Before having sex with someone, you should make sure that you understand the consequences. Are you ready to be a parent? It’s true that sex and children are by no means intertwined; if you or your partner practice safe sex and use contraceptives such as condoms or birth control pills, then you should be okay. Yet there is always the risk of an accident. Celibacy is the one absolute way to ensure that you will never run the risk of becoming pregnant or impregnating someone else.

As long as you take time to carefully consider your health and physical and emotional needs, you will most likely make the right decision for yourself. Do not conform to peer pressure. Make sure that you are acting on emotional desires, not just physical ones. While sex without love may satisfy these physical cravings, it can leave your emotional and spiritual side unfulfilled.

Do not rush into anything – you have your whole life to figure out what kind of lifestyle brings you the most happiness. If you feel like you need religious or emotional guidance, feel free to consult with your religious leader or school counselor to talk things over and decide what the best course is for you. And above all, remember that choosing celibacy or becoming sexually active is a personal choice! As long as you are of age, you get to decide what happens with your body. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers – only what feels best for you.
