The way to eat freshest ingredients is to buy seasonal produce. Some fruits and vegetables are available year round in commercial grocery stores, but certain produce items taste better during the winter. If you go to a farmer’s market, you are guaranteed to see the best seasonal produce varieties.

To get an idea of what fruits and vegetables you should be buying this winter, check out the list below. These produce items can do some amazing things for your health!

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are the staple spud for the holiday season. They are incredibly versatile and are rich in fiber, vitamins, and beta-carotene. Since they are relatively low on the glycemic index, they help you feel full without actually making you sluggish.

Blood Oranges

Blood oranges are rare in some parts, but they are more than worth it if they grace the shelves at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. They are popular from December until March and have a dark red and orange flesh. It’s like looking at a tie-dye shirt inside a fruit. They are rich in anthocyanins, which are red flavonoid pigments that have powerful antioxidant properties. According to nutritionists, anthocyanins also have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce bacterial infections and heart disease.

Winter Squash

The list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning winter squash. Since there are so many colors and varieties to choose from, where do you start? You can’t go wrong with butternut or spaghetti squash, and kabocha and golden squash are loaded with carotenoids, vitamin A, and potassium. We like these roasted, but you can incorporate them into many recipes.

Kiwis

While kiwis are more prevalent certain times throughout the year, many grocery stores carry them year round. When you eat one kiwi, you get 7% of the magnesium, 9% of the potassium, and 2% of the calcium you need every day. One kiwi also contains more vitamin C than an orange!

Bananas

Bananas are notorious for having potassium and magnesium. These are great nutrients for lowering cortisol levels, i.e. stress hormones. Additionally, bananas are great for naturally getting rid of bloating, gas, or water weight. If your bananas are browning, you can freeze them and save them for smoothies instead of throwing them away.

Pineapples

Pineapples contain this awesome enzyme called thiamine, which helps the body break down carbohydrates. You know that afternoon coffee or soda you think you need every day? Pineapple water puts an end to that, helping you feel full and keeping your blood sugar in check.

Beets

We can’t say enough good things about beets, and they have a pretty distinct flavor profile. Perfect for winter soups, smoothies, or roasting with rainbow carrots, beets are rich in betalains, which are antioxidants that can help protect against degenerative diseases. The are also rich in vitamins A, B, & C, potassium, and folate, so there’s no reason not to enjoy them this winter.

Persimmons

Rich in dietary fiber and beneficial sterols, which can help reduce cholesterol levels, persimmons have been referred to as divine fruits. They help to improve digestion and can reduce plaque build-up.

Kumquats

Kumquats have a lengthy season, from October to June, but they are most plentiful from December to April. They are roughly the same size as grapes and their powerful, sweet-tart citrus flavor wakes up your taste buds. They go great in salads and are perfect for snacking; you can even eat the peel. In many Asian countries, kumquats have been used to improve respiratory and immune health, often remedying coughs, colds, and other inflammatory respiratory conditions. Lastly, about 5 kumquats will satisfy 73% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, so eat up!

Celeriac

Last but not least, let us introduce you to the ugly winter produce item known as celeriac, also known as celery root. Ugly produce needs love too, and the antioxidants that protect healthy cells from free radical damage is just one reason to eat this winter veggie. Because celeriac is rich in vitamin K (64 micrograms per cup), it may be beneficial for bone health, considering that higher vitamin K intake is linked with reduced risk of bone fractures. You can chop it up and saute it, cut it into strips and bake it like fries, or steam it and puree it into a soup. We hope you like it!

Other Popular Winter Fruits & Vegetables

  • Apples
  • Avocados
  • Carrots
  • Pumpkin
  • Spinach
  • Turnips
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Rutabagas
  • Leeks
  • Onions

Believe it or not, pineapples are not just for piña coladas, or getting caught in the rain. Pineapples actually have some surprising health benefits that most people don’t know about. You don’t have to eat them to reap these benefits either. In fact, you can cut up some fresh pineapple and infuse it in your water.

Lemons usually steal the show when it comes to putting fruit in your water. We believe in drinking more lemon water, but we are equal opportunity people and open-minded about adding other fruit to our water. It is best to make pineapple water the day before you want to drink it for optimum benefits. Two liters of water will require about half of a pineapple, peeled and cubed. Make a fresh batch every day to experience the following.

Supports Weight Loss

Pineapples contain this awesome enzyme called thiamine, which helps the body break down carbohydrates. You know that afternoon coffee or soda you think you need every day? Pineapple water puts an end to that, helping you feel full and keeping your blood sugar in check.

Thyroid Regulation

Iodine is necessary to help keep your thyroid hormones balanced. Lucky for you, pineapples have iodine and drinking pineapple water is a great way to absorb this nutrient. Thyroid regulation can help prevent weight gain and hypothyroidism.

Great For Digestion

If you didn’t already know, pineapples are great for the digestive system because they contain bromelain, which digests protein. The manganese in pineapple helps to boost the production of the enzymes that help you feel energized.

Boosts Immunity

Bromelain, which is the miracle worker in pineapples, helps regulate immune responses. This means that it helps to ward off unwanted or unnecessary inflammation. Drinking pineapple water can also help reduce swelling, bruising, or overall pain after an injury.

Electrolyte Balancer

When you drink pineapple water, you get a healthy dose of potassium, which is an essential electrolyte that the body uses for growth and development. Potassium can also help lower sodium levels in the body, which makes drinking pineapple water great for those who want to naturally lower blood pressure.

Parasites Be Gone

As if bromelain hasn’t done enough already, studies have found that it can help kill parasites like roundworms in the body. These worms affect roughly 50% of the world’s population and drinking pineapple water can help naturally flush them from the body.

Say Cheese

Since studies have found that bromelain can help fight enamel stains and plaque build-up, drinking pineapple water can be beneficial for oral health. So drink your pineapple water to help protect your teeth and gums.

When it comes to losing weight, people don’t realize that the majority of their effort has to be put towards what they eat. Working out helps with weight loss, but you can’t expect to lose weight if you exercise for 40 minutes a day and eat meat, processed foods, dairy products, refined sugars, and junk food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Things just don’t work like that. When you are conscious of how to supply your body with the food it needs, weight loss will come naturally.

Whether it is through your diet or the environment, toxins manage to lodge themselves inside the body. An excess build-up of toxins makes it difficult for the body to function optimally. You can naturally flush these toxins from your body with fruits and vegetables, or you can use detox waters.

A lot of people get attracted to juices if they are trying to cleanse. While there are some exceptions, most bottled juices that people buy contain preservatives or a lot of sugar. Either juice the foods yourself or infuse fresh produce into your water to absorb the benefits. Drinking detox waters is a great way to aid your weight loss process because they keep your digestive system healthy. Try the following recipes and let us know how they worked for you.

Ginger Mint Water

Ginger is a great herbal remedy that can be used to help a variety of ailments. It helps smooth digestion and it has incredible anti-inflammatory properties.

Ingredients

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 inches ginger root, peeled and sliced
  • 2 lemon wedges
  • 10-12 mint leaves
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1 gallon water

Instructions

Get a large container that can hold 1 gallon of purified water. Combine the ingredients in the jug with the water and stir to combine the flavors. Refrigerate this for about 4 hours and then enjoy. You can strain or not strain the ingredients from the water; up to you.

Strawberry Basil Water

It’s always beneficial to consume antioxidants. Strawberries are rich in these, in addition to other essential nutrients, and basil contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ingredients

  • 10 whole strawberries, sliced
  • 2 lemon wedges
  • juice from half a lemon
  • handful of fresh basil leaves
  • ½ gallon water

Instructions

Follow the instructions in the above recipe.

Lemon, Pineapple & Mango Water

Pineapples are great for the digestive system because they have an anti-inflammatory enzyme. In addition to their ability to regulate blood sugar levels, mangos can help relieve bloating and flatten your stomach.

Ingredients

  • Cubed pineapple & mango (enough to fill 1/3 glass)
  • 2 lemon slices
  • Water to fill up the cup

Instructions

Place the ingredients in the cup or water vessel of your choice and enjoy. You can keep refilling the water too!

Cucumber Lemon Water

This is probably one of the most classic combinations. Lemon helps fight free radicals in the body and they aid digestion. Cucumbers add a nice flavor and are a great weight loss food.

Ingredients

  • ½ cucumber
  • 1 lemon
  • 3-4 mint leaves
  • 1 quart water

Instructions
