As the body’s largest organ, the skin provides a physical barrier that protects you from the outside world. If the skin isn’t functioning optimally, you may notice irregular or unpleasant symptoms, including pimples, lumps, bumps, and infections. You may not need to worry about some symptoms, while others may be cause for concern. Some may even require medical treatment to prevent symptoms from worsening.

Underarm bumps, for example, are one such symptom that can be quite annoying. There are several cases to these bumps, so understanding how they came to be is integral to getting rid of them. To get to the root cause of symptoms and find the right course of action to take care of the issue, continue reading.

Acne

If you have had acne before, you know that it typically occurs on the face, chest, back, and arms. Those little blemishes can rear their heads under the arms too, according to dermatologists. Acne has several causes, the most common of which include clogged hair follicles, excess oil, skin inflammation, or bacteria. Because the armpits have oil glands, you may see blemishes in those areas. Dermatologists recommend seeking out washes with active ingredients that fight acne. If you cannot clear up underarm pimples with an acne wash, a topic cream or oral medication may be necessary.

Ingrown Hairs

Certain cultures, especially here in the United States, have normalized getting rid of body hair. If you shave, wax, or move your armpit hair in other ways, you increase the risk of ingrown hairs. Commonly associated with shaving, ingrown hairs, or razor bumps, resemble small pimples. As the hair grows between shaves, the hair shaft can curl back and penetrate the skin. That causes red, irritated skin and the pimple-like appearance. Although anyone who shaves can experience ingrown hairs, they are more common in people with curly or coarse hair. You can click here to learn about a lot of home remedies for razor bumps, which tend to clear up on their own. In some instances, you may need to treat ingrown hairs with dermatologist-recommended products. Word to the shavers out there: replace your blades because shaving with dull blades can easily cause ingrown hairs.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa

The what now? Commonly known as HS, hidradenitis suppurativa is a lesser-known cause of underarm bumps. This commonly occurs where skin touches skin, making the armpits a prime spot for the issue to occur. HS also goes by acne inversa, which can be mistaken for acne, even though it is not a type of acne. The underarm bumps are similar to lumps, but they can appear painful and drain pus, according to experts. Failure to treat them can result in scarring. HS is a chronic skin condition and there is no cure, unfortunately. Consult your dermatologist to determine the best course of action to take, i.e. antibacterial creams, oral antibiotics, or medical cleansers.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

If you notice a lump or swollen area in your armpit area, you may have swollen lymph nodes. The lymphatic system’s primary functions are to filter out foreign substances and fight off infection. You have hundreds of lymph nodes throughout the body, some of which are under your arms. Swollen lymph nodes in the underarm area can cause bumps or lumps, which you may be able to move with your fingers. There is always an underlying cause to swollen lymph nodes, as they don’t swell up on their own. Certain cancers, autoimmune disorders, and medications can cause lymph nodes to swell up. Because swollen lymph nodes are common, they aren’t always cause for concern. Your immune system may not be in its best working order and the swelling will calm down once it fights off the infection. Should swollen lymph nodes persist, especially if they are hard or tender to the touch, you may want to consult your healthcare professional.

Folliculitis

If you suspect that acne is the cause of your underarm bumps but the pimples don’t go away with over-the-counter treatments, folliculitis may be the culprit. Folliculitis is a common skin infection of the hair follicles, and the pus-filled bumps resemble acne. Bacteria can get into damaged hair follicles and cause folliculitis bumps, which mimic ingrown hairs. Hair follicles are easily damaged by shaving, wearing tight clothing that causes friction, or spending too much time in sweaty clothes after a workout. In mild cases, folliculitis will go away on its own. You can apply a warm compress to your underarms several times per day to help accelerate hair follicle recovery. You can also experiment with peroxide washes or antibacterial treatments, should folliculitis persist.

Making your own beauty products isn’t just a trend; rather, it’s a great way to enhance your skin and save money. Quality skin care products are hard to come by, and the ones that are great tend to cost an arm and a leg. Even then, those “natural” products can contain fragrances or other chemicals that harm the skin. With DIY skin care products, you know exactly what they contain, and the body has an easier time absorbing them.

Why Do Breakouts Happen?

Breakouts aren’t the worst thing in life, but they can ruin your day. Can you attempt to camouflage your breakouts? Surely, but that doesn’t address the real issue. Breakouts typically occur where the skin has the most oil glands, i.e. the face, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Hair follicles fill with dead skin cells, sebum (oil), and occasionally bacteria. This clogging can result in blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. Although acne is most common in teenagers, it affects people of all ages.

If the pore is clogged and you don’t see inflammation, that is called a comedone. If the comedone is closed, experts consider that a whitehead (the pimple or zit that looks whitish or yellowish). An open comedone has a black plug, that is a blackhead. The color comes from the bacteria and oil inside the pore, which turns black after exposure to the air.

Causes Of Breakouts

Many things can cause breakouts, but the good news is that there are easy ways to prevent them from happening. Although stress is thought to be a cause of acne, this is not actually true. Stress can increase the severity of acne because corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), a hormone released during stress, triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines. That promotes more oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. In addition to stress, skin care products, acne treatments, diet, dehydration, and smoking cigarettes can all increase the risk and frequency of breakouts.

If you want to reduce the risk of breakouts, incorporate one, some, or all of the following DIY recipes to promote clearer skin. This goes without saying, but do not use one of these recipes if you are allergic or sensitive to certain ingredients. If you’re unsure of whether or not you have a sensitivity but you know you have sensitive skin, consider a patch test before applying the product all over your face. A small spot on the arm tends to be a great place to test products. If no reaction occurs within 24 hours, you should be good to use those ingredients.

Some people have clearer skin than others. Every now and then, though, it’s possible for a rogue zit or pimple to appear and cause a little panic. How will you get rid of it? Will it scar? How long will it take to go away? Will you ever be able to show your face in public? We may not be able to put an immediate stop to your blemish panic, but we can provide you with an effective DIY acne spot treatment.

Why Do You Get Zits/Pimples Out Of Nowhere?

A sudden acne breakout with one or more pimples or zits can result from several causes. While it can be attributed to a hormonal change or imbalance, it’s often due to the high cortisol levels from stress or excessive sebum production. According to dermatologists, there’s no reason to fret when you see a rogue zit or pimple. It’s naturally jarring to see a zit in the center of your forehead, but stressing about it can actually make it worse. More often than not, you can address the problem easily.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Acne

When you use apple cider vinegar (ACV) to help get rid of acne, it’s very important to purchase raw ACV with “the mother.” The fermentation process of raw ACV creates acetic acid, which is a compound that has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Researchers attribute most of apple cider vinegar’s health properties to acetic acid and malic acid. When you apply ACV to the skin, the various acids exfoliate the skin, helping to remove bacteria and layers of dead skin cells.

Tea Tree Oil For Acne

Most people know of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide for acne treatment, but tea tree oil is a great natural alternative. Known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil works to fight against Cutibacterium acnes, a common bacteria on the skin. This bacteria is normal, but it does contribute to the formation of acne. This is why tea tree oil helps to reduce acne, specifically red bumps or pimples. The terpinene-4-ol in tea tree oil also helps to clear up non-inflammatory blackheads and whiteheads. Finally, dermatologists say that tea tree oil helps encourage white blood cell production, which helps to accelerate the healing process.

A Quick Note: Before you use ACV or tea tree oil on your face, please do a spot test on your arm or less sensitive area on the skin. You don’t want to have an adverse reaction on your face and make the zit even worse and more noticeable.

DIY Spot Treatment

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon filtered water
  • 4 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • We recommend using a dropper bottle so that you can carefully apply the spot treatment when you are ready.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a small bottle, screw on the top, and shake it up to combine the mixture. The mixture should look opaque.

How To Use:

  • When you see a pimple or zit, wash your face and pat it dry.
  • Get the spot treatment and gently dab a drop or two to the affected area. Do not use more than twice daily.

Pimples seem to want to rob you of feeling good about yourself. Just when you thought you were lowering your stress, a pimple shows up and the stress is back again. How can you go out in public? How many products are you going to have to use to cover up your pimples? Rather than using chemical products, which only harm your body, we are bringing you some all-natural, overnight tricks to get rid of pimples.

What Causes Acne?

While stress can irritate acne, it is not the thing that causes it. The common belief is that acne is a result of rising androgen levels. Androgen, a type of hormone, levels rise during adolescent years and ultimately cause the oil glands to grow under the skin, thusly producing more oil. The excess oil breaks down the walls in the pores, causing bacteria to grow. Certain studies also indicate that acne can be genetic. Anytime there is a drastic hormonal change, for example during pregnancy or adolescence, acne can sometimes be a result. Impurities in the blood stream can also lead to acne because the impurities come up through the pores.

Note: Before using any of the following essential oils, make sure to do a patch test, especially if you have sensitive skin. This is so you can avoid a possible negative reaction.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil works to decrease redness and swelling with the antimicrobial properties, which also help to clear up the skin. Mix a few drops of peppermint oil in 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Apply the mixture directly to the zit or pimple and let your skin absorb the mixture. Leave this on for a couple hours and then reapply.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemons have some amazing health properties. In fact, lemons help to regenerate skin cells. Additionally, lemon oil helps to fight free radical damage, which can lead to healthier skin. Before using lemon essential oil, wash your face and pat dry. Drop 3 drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and pat this on your skin. Apply this several times a day and once before going to bed.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense oil contains anti-inflammatory properties that work to kill bacteria on the skin. It also works to tone the skin and promote healthy skin cell regeneration. This is a good oil to get rid of a stubborn pimple. After washing your face and patting it dry, drop 2 drops of Frankincense oil on a cotton ball and apply this to the pimple, and the surrounding area, before bed.

Tea Tree Oil

This is a common acne treatment, especially for acne on the forehead, chin, and cheeks. Tea tree oil has powerful antimicrobial properties and tons of antioxidants, both of which help to get rid of acne. Mix 1-2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil. Apply a drop or two of this mixture to the affected area every few hours to help get rid of acne.

Lavender Essential Oil

The antifungal and antibacterial properties work to get rid of acne and the antioxidants help to accelerate the healing process. You can use this oil on the face, back, legs, and arms. To use this, apply a single drop on the pimple or zit and leave it on and let it air-dry. You can reapply after a few hours.
