Everyone knows when they are about to come down with a sore throat or cold. Be it the tickle in back of your throat or slight irritation in your nose, you just know. Once you start coughing or have difficulty breathing, perhaps you grab the decongestant and lather it all over your throat and chest. Some people put it under their feet and some want to really inhale the menthol, so they rub some under their nostrils. 

If you are congested and want to breathe easier, you may look to essential oils instead of a classic vapor rub. Some essential oils, including eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils, show particular promise, while others are not as effective at relieving sinus congestion. Other research indicates that essential oils may improve symptoms related to congestion. For example, some may help reduce inflammation, fight bacteria, and relieve pain. 

A Quick Note About Essential Oil Dilution

The key to using essential oils safely is proper dilution. For adults, a 5% dilution is generally safe. That means that 30 drops of essential oils per one ounce of carrier oil, or 15 drops essential oils per 10 milliliters (ml) of carrier oil. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, a 1% dilution is best. Six drops of essential oils per ounce of carrier oil, or three drops essential oils per 10 ml of carrier oil. You can use the same pregnant or breastfeeding dilution ratio for children. 

For this recipe, you will use a half-cup of olive oil, 1/8 cup of beeswax pastilles, and 150 drops of essential oils. You can choose the amount of drops you wish to use from the following list of essential oils that help promote decongestion

Peppermint Essential Oil

A lot of people find that peppermint oil has a cooling effect and may improve symptoms of sinusitis. Because it contains menthol, peppermint essential oil may open the airways by affecting mucus receptors in the nose. According to lab studies, peppermint oil may fight bacteria, a primary trigger of sinus congestion. You can try to add peppermint essential oil to a warm bath to help reduce stuffiness.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains alpha-sabine, a compound that exhibits anti-viral, antibacterial, and antifungal activity. Researchers believe that tea tree oil helps relieve sinus congestion by fighting bacteria and viruses in the airways. It’s also possible that tea tree oil reduces inflammation, which may bring down swelling in the sinuses. By reducing swelling you can relieve symptoms of congestion, such as runny or stuffy nose. 

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is a common ingredient in chest rubs and other over-the-counter decongestants. It shows promise as an alternative remedy for sinusitis and congestion. Similar to peppermint essential oil, you can add eucalyptus essential oil to a warm bath to promote decongestion. Eucalyptus oil contains ceneole, which was proven to be safe and effective for sinus issues in several small studies. It helped to improve symptoms of sinusitis, including nasal obstruction, headaches, and runny nose. 


Essential Oil Chest Rub Decongestant

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 beeswax pastilles
  • 150 drops essential oils of choice

Instructions:

  • In the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat, melt the olive oil and beeswax together. Stir frequently to melt evenly. 
  • When the two ingredients are fully melted, remove from the heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes. You can put it back over the heat and add more oil if the mixture is too hard, or add more beeswax if it is too soft. 
  • Add the 150 drops of essential oils (your selection) and mix well to combine. Immediately pour the mixture into a four-ounce mason jar. Cover and let cool at room temperature. 
  • Apply to the chest and/or the neck area during a cold to help reduce coughing and promote better breathing.

The Body Wash Ingredients

Before you get all of your ingredients together, make sure that you grab a bottle for your soap. You can reuse an old bottle of body wash if you want, but it is better to use amber glass, as this recipe contains essential oils. Dark glass helps essential oils retain their health benefits, due to reduced UV exposure. Like other body wash recipes that we have published, this one contains liquid castile soap. Because we recently described the benefits of castile soap (click here for recent post), we will not detail the benefits. Instead, you can read about the benefits of other ingredients below. 

Almond Oil

Almond oil is an excellent carrier oil that is beneficial for all skin and hair types. Research has shown that hand cream containing almond oil can help relieve hand dermatitis. Another study found that almond oil was able to relieve symptoms, such as itchy skin, redness, burning, and stinging. Some people like to use almond oil as a daily moisturizer because it helps to improve complexion and skin tone. Thanks to the antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, almond oil may benefit people with acne-prone skin. It works to reduce redness and inflammation, while also helping to cleanse pores. 

Orange Essential Oil

Citrus essential oils, such as orange essential oil, are praised in the beauty world because they can be an alternative to vitamin C serums. When used in aromatherapy, orange essential oil helps to reduce stress or improve mood. In topical uses, orange essential oil may help to relieve pain or inflammation and improve acne. Orange essential oil may also increase blood flow, which is why it is used by massage therapists. Both the aloe and the peppermint help provide the cooling sensation, but they also benefit the skin in other ways. Read on to learn how the different ingredients benefit the skin. 

Beeswax

Beeswax can help the skin retain moisture because it is a humectant. That means that it binds water and attracts it, creating a protective barrier on the skin to lock in moisture. Beeswax can also help condition, calm, and soothe the skin without clogging pores. That allows the skin to breathe, decreasing your risk of developing blemishes. Researchers note that beeswax exhibits regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties, which work to reduce irritation, redness, and inflammatory skin conditions. 

Aloe Vera Gel

As a quick note for the DIY lotion in this article, you have to keep the aloe vera gel at room temperature. If you store it in the fridge and add it to the hot oil and wax mixture, it will not emulsify correctly. The skin can easily absorb aloe vera gel, making it ideal for people with oily skin. It can also benefit dry skin as well, sealing in moisture just like beeswax. Because of the moisturizing properties, aloe vera can help alleviate dry, itchy skin that is common among eczema patients. The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera also make it great for people with inflammatory forms of acne, such as nodules and pustules. 

Coconut Oil

When used raw, coconut oil can feel slightly heavy on the skin, but its properties are very nourishing. The fatty acids in coconut oil, specifically lauric and capric acid, have antimicrobial properties that can kill harmful microorganisms on the skin. Folliculitis, acne, and cellulitis are commonly caused by bacteria and fungi, which lauric and capric acid can help kill. Coconut oil also helps to reinforce the skin barrier, which makes the skin more effective at retaining moisture. Some studies have found that coconut oil can also boost the level of antioxidants and collagen in the body, both of which have roles in the skin’s natural regeneration process. 

Peppermint Essential Oil

This aromatic essential oil has two primary chemical components: menthol and menthone. Peppermint essential oil is commonly used in cosmetic products because of its potential benefits for the skin and hair. A 2016 study looked at the topical use of peppermint essential oil and the effect it had on itching. The results indicated that a 1% solution of peppermint oil improved how long itchiness lasted and the severity of the itch. Another study examined the topical effects of menthol on the skin and found that it increased blood flow. That may aid hair growth, because increased blood flow can stimulate the scalp

DIY Cooling Aloe Mint Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup grated beeswax
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup aloe vera gel (room temperature)
  • 1/8 tsp peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the beeswax and coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat and warm until both ingredients are completely melted. 
  • Aim to keep the temperature as low as possible in order to preserve coconut oil’s benefits. 
  • Remove the saucepan from the stove and pour into a heat-safe bowl. Whisk in the room temperature aloe vera gel and then the peppermint essential oil. 
  • Allow the lotion to cool to room temperature (about two to four hours) and then whisk again or use a hand mixer at medium speed for a fluffier version of the same product. Use when ready.
  • As a quick note, the lotion will become thicker and more solid over time, especially as the aloe vera evaporates.

Witch Hazel

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup witch hazel

  • Foaming soap dispenser

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl or glass measuring cup, add all of the ingredients and stir well to combine.

Essential Oils

There are various essential oils that may help relieve nausea. Peppermint essential oil is one of the most popular oils for nausea relief, but lemon is also helpful, especially during pregnancy. These oils have antimicrobial properties that work to fight harmful pathogens when you inhale their aromas. A 2021 study involved cancer patients who applied peppermint oil below their noses for nausea relief. A separate controlled group only used anti-nausea medication. The peppermint group experienced less nausea and vomiting than the other group. 

Ginger

Whether you have a sore throat, nausea, or upset stomach, ginger may be the right natural remedy for the job. Ginger tea, ginger chews, and fresh ginger all work well at relieving various types of nausea, including pregnancy nausea. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends ginger as a safe alternative to nausea drugs in pregnancy. Some studies have found that ginger is more effective at relieving nausea than dimenhydrinate, an antiemetic drug. 

Move It (If You Can)

If you experience nausea from a stomach ache or overeating, exercise may help. A gentle workout, such as yoga or walking, increases circulation to your muscles and organs, including the ones that aid digestion. That boost of circulation may help improve digestion, which can then help relieve nausea. Just make sure to avoid bending over, as that will not feel good. 

Acupuncture

Acupuncture and acupressure work their magic by activating energy meridians in the body. During an acupuncture appointment, the acupuncturist administers thin needles to specific points in the body. One of the most popular nausea pressure points is on the hand, between the thumb and index finger. If you do not want to engage in acupuncture, you can apply pressure in this area for three to four minutes per side and repeat as needed. Sea Bands may also work to relieve nausea, as they are bracelets that apply pressure to an anti-nausea point on the inside of the wrist. 

Peppermint Tea

Similar to peppermint essential oil, peppermint tea may help ease nausea. It is safe to drink, even for children, and may also help relieve digestive problems, such as gas, bloating, or irritable bowel syndrome. If you start to feel a stuffy nose, you likely know what lies ahead. Before long, you feel a lot of sinus pressure and you cannot drain them properly. Perhaps you feel a headache from either the intense nose blowing or general congestion. You most likely have a sinus infection, or one has begun to brew. 

What Is A Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection, or sinusitis, is the inflammation of tissues in the sinuses. Your sinuses are the spaces in your forehead, cheeks, and nose typically filled with air. A sinus infection can cause facial pain, stuffy or runny nose, and occasional fever. More often than not, you can attribute a sinus infection to the common cold, but other viruses, fungi, bacteria, and allergies can cause sinusitis. 

If you experience long-term sinus infections, then you may have forgotten what it’s like to breathe properly. Is one nostril always clogged? There is no need to live with blocked sinuses, especially when there are many natural remedies that can relieve sinus pressure

Is It Sinusitis, COVID-19, A Cold, Or An Allergy?

Colds, allergies, sinus infections, and COVID-19 have very similar symptoms. The common cold typically builds, peaks, and then slowly disappears. It can last anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. Nasal allergies cause itchy eyes and nose, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip. Allergies don’t tend to cause the same facial pain the sinus infections do. Additionally, COVID-19 tends to cause symptoms like shortness of breath and fever. 

If you want to avoid over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and experiment with natural remedies to help promote healthy sinuses, experiment with essential oils. The following remedies can help with nasal decongestion. 

Steam Inhalation 

This blend works to promote drainage and helps clear out the sinuses. In order to do this, you’ll need to follow the recipe below. 

Ingredients:

  • 3 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • A blow of hot, steaming water

Instructions:

  • Five to 10 minutes before you engage in this natural remedy, clear your nasal passages by blowing your nose. You can use a xylitol-based sinus spray to enhance the clearing if you want. 
  • Add your essential oils to a large, non-reactive bowl filled with boiling water. 
  • Grab a large towel, cover your head with it, and lean over the bowl, allowing the towel to create a tent over the bowl.
    Keep your eyes closed and inhale the steam vapors for five to 10 minutes. Repeat several times per day. 

The Cajeput Bath

Cajeput essential oil is distilled from the branches and leaves of the cajeput tree. This is a subtype of melaleuca, which is indigenous to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia. It is a strong, antiseptic oil that can directly combat sinusitis, especially when inhaled via steam vapors.

Ingredients:

  • 6 drops cajeput essential oil
  • 1 tbsp jojoba oil

Instructions:

  • Add the cajeput essential oil and jojoba oil to a small glass bowl and stir to combine. 
  • Draw a warm bath and add the oil mixture to the running water. The water doesn’t have to be very hot. 
  • Soak in the bath for 15 minutes and repeat this treatment once per day until symptoms subside. 

Warm Compress

For this remedy, you essentially soak a cloth in warm water that contains various essential oils. You then drape that soaked cloth over the nose and sinus area for as long as you desire. This should help clear the nasal passages

Ingredients: 

  • 1 drop of each eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, tea tree, and lavender essential oils
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 clean piece of cloth

Instructions:

  • Pour one cup of warm water in a non-reactive bowl and stir in the essential oils. 
  • Soak your cloth in the bowl of infused water. Wring out enough water so the cloth doesn’t drip. 
  • Place the cloth over your nose and sinus area for as long as you want. Repeat often, but be careful to not allow the mixture to drip into your eyes. 

Diffusing Blend

If you are not the type of person to hover your face over a steamy bowl of sinus-cleansing vapors, a sinus relief blend in a diffuser may be more your speed. 

Ingredients:

  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 3 drops thyme essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the essential oils to a diffuser with some water and turn on the diffuser. Make sure that your diffuser can diffuse essential oils before you add them. 
  • If you don’t like that blend, you can use the same measurements for marjoram, lavender, and myrtle essential oils, respectively.

This after sun lotion contains green tea, which may seem like an unusual ingredient for such a DIY skin care product. Green tea works to reduce inflammation and provides lots of antioxidants and polyphenols that fight sun damage and free radicals. Even if you do not get burnt, these antioxidants can help fight the free radicals that develop from sun exposure. Green tea also works to fight the signs of aging and promotes rejuvenation, which is necessary after sun exposure. 

Aloe Vera Gel

When you think of after sun care, your mind probably goes straight to aloe vera gel. It soothes the skin and helps accelerate recovery from a sunburn. If you put it in the fridge and then apply it to your warm, sunburnt skin, it is a revelation. Most people have used the sap from the aloe plant to soothe skin for centuries. It has an instant cooling effect and works to fight inflammation. Studies have shown that aloe vera also increases cell turnover and promotes new cell growth. Mostly composed of water, aloe vera works to moisturize and nourish the body, enhancing the skin barrier and preventing moisture loss after application.

Essential Oils

Similar to aloe vera, some essential oils, such as peppermint essential oil, provide an instant cooling effect when topically applied to the skin. Peppermint essential oil helps to draw heat out of the body, which is necessary if you have a sunburn. Finally, the lavender essential oil in this after sun lotion has a soothing scent that helps to calm the mind and body. After Sun Lotion

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder
  • 1/3 cup pure aloe vera gel
  • 25 drops vitamin E oil
  • 25 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil and beeswax pellets to a small saucepan over medium low heat. Stir frequently until fully melted and clear.
  • Add the matcha powder and stir to combine. Allow the matcha to steep in the oil and beeswax mixture for one hour over very low heat. 
  • Pour the matcha-infused oil mixture through a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve into a heat-safe bowl. 
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the same bowl and whisk all of the ingredients together by hand or with an electric mixer. 
  • Once you have thoroughly whisked the ingredients, pour the mixture into a glass jar and allow it to cool at room temperature. This will take some time. 
  • When the mixture is cool, you can use it immediately. If you want to go the extra mile to have a fluffy consistency, you can pour the mixture back into a bowl and whisk with an electric mixture. 
  • Store the after sun lotion in a glass jar in the fridge to keep it as fresh as possible. This will also enhance the cooling effects of some of the ingredients in the after sun lotion.

If you have dry skin, these glands produce too much oil to make up for the lack of moisture in the skin. The excess oil (sebum) builds up in the skin’s pores and can congest the skin. Clogged pores are breeding grounds for acne-causing bacteria, which feed on the excess sebum and skin debris. With all that food available, the bacteria proliferate rapidly and cause breakouts

Moisturizers come in many forms, such as creams, lotions, and ointments. They also have varying consistencies, usually oil-based and thick or water-based and lightweight). Ideally, choose a moisturizer that suits your skin’s needs. If you have a skin condition or know your skin type, choose a moisturizer that will benefit your skin. The following DIY moisturizer contains two standout ingredients that benefit a variety of skin types and conditions: 

  • Aloe vera: The gel from the aloe plant acts as a humectant, drawing moisture from the environment and locking it into your skin. This provides long-lasting hydration! It also contains anti-inflammatory properties that help to ease redness, swelling, pain, and itching, all of which are associated with inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and acne. 
  • Coconut oil: Commonly used in hair care, coconut oil works to keep the skin supple, soft, and young by providing nourishment and hydration. The skin can easily absorb coconut oil, which allows it to moisturize at a deeper level. Additionally, coconut oil offers antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may help prevent skin infections. 

DIY Moisturizer

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup each: coconut oil, beeswax pastilles, and fresh aloe vera gel
  • 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil
  • 4 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Place a small saucepan filled with a few inches of water over medium low heat. 
  • Add the coconut oil and beeswax pastilles to a heat-safe glass jar and place it in the saucepan on the stove. Leave the jar in the saucepan, stirring occasionally until the ingredients are completely melted. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool for an hour or more. 
  • Once the mixture has cooled, spoon it into a medium-sized mixing bowl and whisk with a hand mixer or immersion blender to combine. Pour in the aloe vera gel while whisking with your mixer of choice. 
  • Add the vitamin E oil and peppermint essential oil and continue to whisk. Use a spoon to transfer this mixture into a glass jar. Store a small amount in a small container to extend the shelf life. 
  • To use, smear a thin layer of this moisturizer on your skin after washing with a mild cleanser. Massage the moisturizer into the skin in gentle, circular motions until properly absorbed. Apply twice daily.

It contains MCT oil, which is derived from coconut oil, but stays liquid at different temperatures.

Essential Oils In Toothpaste

  • 1/4 cup calcium carbonate powder
  • 3 tablespoons xylitol powder
  • 1/4 cup MCT oil
  • 2 teaspoons activated charcoal powder
  • 20 drops essential oil of choice (optional and see above information)

Instructions:

  • Before you begin, make sure that the xylitol powder is finely ground and not coarse. If necessary, add it to a coffee grinder and blitz until very fine. 
  • Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or squeeze tube and use as needed when you brush your teeth. 
  • Store in a cool area and do not allow water to get into the jar or tube of toothpaste.
