Can you purchase sugar scrubs in the store? Absolutely, but they will most likely contain ingredients that aren’t beneficial for the skin. There’s no need to spend a fortune on store bought sugar scrubs when you can easily make your own with all natural ingredients for a fraction of the price.

Sugar scrubs are used to exfoliate dry skin and to replenish those drier areas with moisture and nourishing essential oils. The coarseness of the sugar works to gently but efficiently remove dead skin cells, while the oils and lemon juice in this recipe help to moisturize, kill harmful bacteria, and encourage the production of new, healthy skin cells.

Coconut Oil

We don’t know how many times we have praised and written about the benefits of coconut oil for the skin, and this won’t be the last! Coconut oil is truly the ultimate moisturizer, but it is best to use organic, cold-pressed coconut oil for optimum benefits. The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil help your skin retain moisture, which keeps it looking silky smooth and youthful.

Lemon Essential Oil

Extracted from the peels of fresh lemons, lemon essential oil can be diluted and applied on the skin. Several tests have shown that lemon essential oil may fight harmful bacteria, such as E. coli or Staphylococcus aureus, making it great for cleaning small wounds. The antioxidants in the oil may help to reduce acne inflammation and improve or brighten skin tone.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a staple in the Mediterranean diet, providing nutritional benefits when ingested. It’s not just for consumption, though, because its benefits can improve hair and skin health. The moisturizing properties of olive oil help to soften skin, while the antibacterial properties may help to control skin bacteria. Most importantly, olive oil contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, all of which are fat soluble vitamins that help hydrate the skin.

Ingredients For Scrub:

  • The zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup cold-pressed coconut oil, melted
  • 20 drops lemon essential oil

Instructions:

  • Zest and juice the lemon into a medium mixing bowl and mix in the sugar, olive oil, melted coconut oil, and lemon essential oil.
  • Mix well until everything is thoroughly combined.
  • Pour the sugar scrub in an airtight jar and store in a cool dry place. Massage about a tablespoon of the mixture on the area of dry skin a couple times a week.

Soaking in warm bath after a long stressful day may be one of the most soothing and easiest things you can do to relax. While the warm water helps to get rid of muscle tension, there are other ingredients you can add to your bath to increase the benefits. Rather than having an ordinary soak, you could be reaping some incredibly therapeutic benefits.

People head to the store to buy products to enhance their bathing experience. Little do they know that these products do more harm than good. Most people probably have amazing bath ingredients in their own homes and they fail to use them. While many of the ingredients, which are detailed below, may seem like strange things to add to a bath, we encourage you to try them out! Let us know how they make you feel in the comments below.

Raw Honey

Used as a topical remedy for over 10,000 years, raw honey contains potent antibacterial properties that work to prevent infections and treat acne. Raw honey contains polyphenols and antioxidants that work to slow the signs of aging. Not only does it help moisturize, but it also helps the skin retain moisture. Add one cup of raw honey to a warm bath, mix it in, and soak in it for about 20 minutes.

Cinnamon

If you ever have a cold or feel congested, add cinnamon to your bath. It is a natural decongestant and it contains antiseptic and antiviral properties. Some cultures have used cinnamon to help with spiritual purification because it helps to eliminate toxins from the body. It is also a warming spice, which can help fight away the chill. Add a few cinnamon sticks to your bath and soak for about 20 minutes.

Steel Cut Oats

If you already eat a bowl of steel cut oats for breakfast, then you are well aware of the benefits. While steel cut oats are great to eat, they can also provide relief for rashes, sunburns, skin irritations, or dry skin. The healthy fats help to rid pores of impurities and the inherent proteins help the skin keep its natural moisture barrier. Add one cup of oats to your bath and soak for 15 minutes.

Green Tea

While there are many benefits of drinking green tea, adding it to your bath is a great way to absorb its healing benefits. The anti-aging properties help to restore moisture and skin elasticity. The aroma also helps to clear the mind and relax the body, especially before bed. Find your favorite organic green tea and drop five to ten of those green tea bags in the bath. The bath is ready when the water turns light brown/green. Enjoy this soak for as long as you like.

Epsom Salt

If you have too many things on your mind and need to naturally lower stress levels, take an Epsom salt bath. Magnesium is an essential mineral that works to combat cortisol, the stress hormone. Magnesium is also responsible for reducing inflammation and relaxing sore muscles. So hop in a warm Epsom salt bath and let your stress melt away.

Homemade sugar scrubs are easy DIY ways to pamper yourself and give your skin some much-needed TLC. While store bought body scrubs can be lovely, they can be expensive and contain questionable ingredients that are not conducive to skin health. Making your own sugar scrub is a very simple process, and you may already have a lot of the ingredients in your kitchen.

Diets typically instruct us to steer clear of sugar, but you aren’t going to ingest this sugar scrub; although, it does look and smell good enough to eat. When used topically, brown sugar acts as a great natural exfoliator that doesn’t break the bank. Some people argue that sea salt is also a great inexpensive exfoliator, but the size of the grains can cause microscopic tears or aggravate cuts or scrapes. Softer than regular sugars, brown sugar helps to scrub away dead skin cells, allowing newer, healthier skin cell growth.

A lot of exfoliators can leave your skin feeling dry. Brown sugar actually absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment and deposits that moisture into your skin, helping to hydrate and condition. Additionally, brown sugar keeps the moisture locked in and guards the skin from harmful toxins.

Do you guys know what glycolic acid is? Well, brown sugar has it and it works to fight bacteria and keep your skin looking youthful. Brown sugar also helps to reduce sun-damaged skin and break down glue-bonded cells, which is conducive to healthy skin cell production.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup organic brown sugar
  • ½ cup virgin coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon vitamin E oil
  • 1 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a mixing bowl and mix well.
  • Store this in an airtight glass jar in a cool dry place and use once a day.
  • Because this doesn’t contain any preservatives, it is best used within one to two months.

Is it possible to get clearer, healthier skin without using top-of-the-line skincare products? Yes, and the skincare products you buy often times cause more damage to your body than you realize. There are chemicals in these products that can contaminate the skin and wreak havoc on the body. Let’s take a step away from these products and start working on improving our skin from the inside out.

Glowing, clear skin is attainable if you give your body the nutrients that it needs. Detox waters are great for constantly supplying your body with a variety of nutrients from different produce items. Additionally, constantly drinking water helps to flush toxins from the body, while keeping your cells hydrated and happy.

The following produce items should be in your water at all times to help you improve your skin health.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is commonly used as a natural remedy for sunburns, rashes, or psoriasis, but adding it to your water can help to treat gut issues and promote clearer skin.

Apple: Rich in malic acid, which helps to cleanse your skin by renewing skin cells, apples are great additions to detox waters.

Apple Cider Vinegar: When it comes to apple cider vinegar, make sure that it is raw and unfiltered. This will help to balance bacteria in your gut and promote a neutral pH balance.

Citrus Fruits (grapefruit, lemons, limes, & oranges): All of these are full of vitamin C, which plays a role in the formation of collagen.

Cucumber: Cucumbers mostly water, which helps to keep you hydrated, but they are also rich in beta-carotene, vitamin C, and manganese, all of which help to make your skin soft.

Ginger: Great for keeping the skin glowing, ginger contains lots of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that work to hydrate and heal.

Mint: Mint is commonly used as a natural acne treatment, so adding it to your water helps to supply the body with antioxidants and flavonoids.

First thing’s first…Do Not Eat This! Seriously, please do not eat this. And don’t leave this out to be within your children’s reach because they may think it looks like a dessert. Now that we got that disclaimer out of the way, we can tell you how awesome this DIY body butter is.

This body butter works to make your skin softer because it has some amazing ingredients. The Shea and cocoa butters help to moisturize your skin, while the coconut oil works to repair dry skin and promote younger looking skin. Depending on what essential oils you add to this body butter, you may experience additional benefits. We enjoy tea tree and lavender essential oils.

Lavender Oil

Lavender has a very calming scent, which can benefit you if you are trying to induce a deeper sleep. One of the most widely used essential oils, lavender can be used in many ways. You can place a couple drops on the underside of your pillow for peaceful sleep, or place 3 drops on a cotton ball and place it in your closet to naturally repel moths.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, has powerful medicinal properties. You can make a natural cleaner, use it topically to sooth skin conditions, or even cleanse your yoga mat with it. If you have a rash, for example, pour 10-15 drops of tea tree oil in a warm bath and soak in it for about 20 minutes as a natural remedy.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Shea butter
  • ¼ cup cocoa butter
  • ¼ cup virgin coconut oil
  • ¼ cup sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

  • In a double boiler or sauce pain over medium-low heat, combine all of the ingredients, except the essential oils. Stir this mixture until it becomes liquid.
  • Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool and set. Make sure it is set before completing the next step.
  • Add the essential oils and whip with a stand or hand mixer, whipping until you get fluffy peaks. The mixture will not whip if you don’t let it set.
  • Spoon this into a glass jar and store in a cool dry place, or in the fridge. Use on dry or cracked skin.
