Oil pulling may help reduce the presence of harmful bacteria in your mouth and decrease the risk of some health conditions. It is an ancient Indian folk remedy that claims to whiten your teeth, freshen breath, and improve oral hygiene. Unfortunately, no scientific research confirms these claims, but this article aims to explore whether oil pulling is effective, or just another trend.

Oil pulling is somewhat controversial, despite its thousand-year history. It is an Ayurvedic practice that helps care not only for the mouth, but also for the entire body. Oral health extends beyond the teeth and gums, so adding coconut oil pulling to your oral hygiene routine may come with added health benefits.

What Is Oil Pulling?

This ancient remedy from Ayurveda originated in India over a thousand years ago. The practice is simple: you take a small amount of high-quality, organic oil and swish it in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. You can use various oils, but they need to be high-quality, food-grade oils. Coconut oil is the preferred oil to use because it exhibits antibacterial properties. The primary benefit of oil pulling is that it reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth, which create biofilm on the teeth, also known as plaque.

Having a small amount of plaque on the teeth is fairly normal. It only becomes problematic if it gets out of hand, leading to the following potential outcomes:

How Does Oil Pulling Work?

By swishing the oil around in your mouth, it helps sweep away and dissolve bacteria in the oil. As previously mentioned, oil pulling works best with extra-virgin coconut oil, but it will work with almost any oil. Coconut oil has a more pleasant taste and a higher fatty acid profile, especially lauric acid, which exhibits antimicrobial activity.

What Are The Benefits?

There are many purported benefits of oil pulling and it enhances your oral care routine of flossing and brushing. Many people agree that it is better for your teeth than harsh mouthwashes, which typically contain toxic chemicals and alcohol. When you swish the oil around your mouth, it binds to plaque buildup on the teeth. Not only does this help strengthen the teeth and gums, but it also helps prevent cavities and tooth decay. It also can reduce the bacteria that causes periodontitis and halitosis.

Some people report that oil pulling helped them get rid of bad breath, which usually happens because of the chemicals and gasses produced by oral bacteria. Getting rid of some of these bacteria can help improve oral health and reduce the likelihood of bad breath. More studies are still necessary to determine the efficacy of oil pulling to reduce halitosis.

Ultimately, oil pulling can reduce the presence of Streptococcus mutans in the mouth. This bacteria is a key player in the development of plaque buildup and tooth decay. A 2016 study involving 60 adults found that oil pulling with coconut oil for 10 minutes daily significantly reduced the number of Streptococcus mutans in saliva in just two weeks. A previous study in children  found that coconut oil was just as effective as chlorhexidine mouthwash at reducing Streptococcus mutans. These results are promising, but more studies are necessary to prove the efficacy of oil pulling.

Dangers Of Oil Pulling

This is not a death-defying feat, but it’s always beneficial to understand the risks or cons involved with an alternative remedy. Oil pulling can be a great addition to your oral hygiene routine. There are no known side effects to it, but some people report negative reactions to coconut oil. If you have a topical or internal reaction to coconut in any way, do not use coconut oil for oil pulling. Sesame oil would be a better alternative.

Some people also have concerns about oil pulling with amalgam or mercury-based fillings. According to some holistic dentists, oil pulling is safe with mercury fillings and it may help pull toxic metals out of the nerve endings. If you swallow the oil, though, it may give you a slight stomach ache. Make sure you do not swallow the oil, or else you may reabsorb the bacteria that you’re trying to eliminate!

Oil pulling is often associated with Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system from India. It is an ancient practice that works to remove bacteria from the mouth and promote oral hygiene. Studies suggest that oil pulling not only can improve dental health, but it may also reduce the risk of certain oral diseases.

How oil pulling works is not entirely clear. The claim is that it “pulls” bacteria from the mouth by way of moisturizing the gums and increasing saliva production. Several studies indicate that various types of oil contain properties that help reduce bacteria and inflammation. Additionally, a select number of oils, with coconut oil nearly topping the list, may promote oral health. It’s a practice that many people use to aid oral detoxification, and we’ll cover how that happens below.

May Prevent Cavities

As one of the most common problems of tooth decay, cavities result from poor oral hygiene and bacterial build-up in the mouth. It’s also possible for plaque, which coats the teeth, to cause cavities. Bacteria break down the food particles and they form an acid that ruins tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. Oil pulling may reduce the bacterial presence in your mouth, which may prevent cavities and tooth decay. Some research found that oil pulling may decrease the number of harmful bacterial strains found in plaque and saliva.

May Kill Harmful Bacteria In The Mouth

Bacteria in the mouth can be both harmful and beneficial, given that there are 700 types of bacteria in the mouth at any given moment. One study that lasted two weeks monitored children who either used a standard mouthwash, or did oil pulling with sesame oil for 10 minutes daily. Both the mouthwash and oil pulling groups significantly reduced the amount of harmful bacteria in saliva and plaque. A more recent study confirmed that oil pulling with coconut oil had a similar effect.

May Improve Gum Health

The bacteria that exists in plaque, in addition to causing tooth decay, can also cause gingivitis. Bacteria inflames the gums, making them red, swollen, and prone to bleeding. According to some studies, however, oil pulling is a safe and effective remedy to improve gum health and reduce gum inflammation. Certain oils like coconut oil exhibit anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce inflammation in the mouth. A 30-day study monitored 60 participants with gingivitis who began oil pulling. After one week of oil pulling, the participants reduced the amount of plaque and showed an improvement in gum health.

May Reduce Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, affects about one in four people globally. Some of the most common causes for bad breath include gum disease, poor oral hygiene, poor gut health, or tongue coating (bacteria trapped on the tongue). One study found that oil pulling was as effective as chlorhexidine, a chemical in antiseptic mouthwash, at reducing bad breath. In that study, oil pulling with sesame oil significantly decreased levels of microorganisms that contributed to bad breath.

Homemade Oil Pulling Tablets

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unrefined, virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Melt the coconut oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. You can also do this in the top of a double boiler if you prefer to use that method.
  • Get a silicone candy mold and place it on a baking sheet. The size of the molds can vary depending on your preference. You can also fill the molds all the way or halfway.
  • Pour the coconut oil into the candy molds and then transfer the sheet with the molds to the refrigerator. Remove from the fridge once the coconut oil is firm.
  • Pop the hardened coconut oil from the molds and store in a glass container in the refrigerator.

Many people have turned to home remedies to naturally make their teeth whiter, brighter, and shinier. Through trial and error, you eventually find a few ingredients that work better than others. We don’t want you to experiment with everything under the sun, and that’s why we’ve done the legwork to provide you with a two-ingredient toothpaste that naturally whitens teeth.

According to a 2015 statistic, American adults spent over $11 billion on teeth whitening and over $1.4 billion on at-home whitening products. You don’t need to dump a huge portion of your savings on teeth whitening solutions or procedures if you use the right ingredients. Plus, many procedures and chemical whitening products bleach your teeth, which is of great concern to many people. You don’t want that, do you?

Why Do Teeth Start Yellowing?

Well, there isn’t a clear-cut answer to this because there are many contributing factors that make teeth lose their sparkle. Sometimes, teeth appear yellow because enamel begins to erode and reveal the dentin, a naturally yellow bony tissue underneath the enamel. Certain foods also contribute to the yellowing of teeth. Coffee, black tea, red wine, soda, chewing tobacco, and other foods can cause tooth discoloration, staining the enamel and leading to potential plaque build-up.

Coconut Oil For Healthy Teeth

Coconut oil is almost entirely comprised of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are more easily metabolized than long-chain fatty acids, which are found in most other foods. Roughly 50% of coconut oil is made up of lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that has been known to attack harmful bacteria in the mouth. In one study, people who started oil pulling with coconut oil helped to decrease plaque build-up and early signs of gingivitis. There was noticeable improvement seven days into the study, and there was a 68% decrease in plaque at the end of the 30-day study.

Baking Soda For Whiter Teeth

You can use baking soda a few different ways to help naturally whiten your teeth. Baking soda is considered a base, so it is often mixed with a more acidic component, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or sea salt. Acids, however, can eat away at the calcium in the teeth or irritate gums. Mixing baking soda with water or coconut oil helps create an alkaline environment in the mouth. Because baking soda is slightly abrasive, it helps to scrub away stains on the teeth, but it should not replace your regular brushing and flossing routine.

DIY Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • small container

Ingredients:

  • Combine the baking soda and coconut oil in a small mixing bowl and stir until it forms a paste.
  • Spoon this paste into a small airtight container to keep it fresh.
  • Apply a small amount to your toothbrush when ready to use and brush for two minutes. Rinse and floss to ensure your teeth are squeaky clean.
  • You can use this 3-4 times per week.

Nobody enjoys going to the dentist. People don’t want to sit back in reclining chairs while another person shoves mirrors, drills, suction tubes, or metal picks in their mouths, all the while being asked about their days. We can only make sounds or shake our heads, dentists! Above all else, the news that people don’t want to hear is that they have cavities because their teeth are unhealthy. That’s why reminieralization is such a trending topic in the oral health world.

Let’s Talk About Tooth Health

There’s no denying that brushing and flossing are essential oral care practices to keep your teeth as healthy as possible. One aspect of oral health that is often neglected is diet. While your dentist will tell you to brush and floss to avoid cavities and tooth decay, he or she may not suggest foods that encourage healthy teeth. It is optimal to eat alkaline foods to promote a higher pH environment in the mouth. So many people drink sugary beverages and eat candy or processed foods, which raise acidity levels and strip away enamel as a result. A healthy mouth will have adequate saliva, which deposits minerals on the teeth and remineralizes them in the process.

Brushing Tip: Brush at a 45-degree angle around the gum of each tooth. This is where bacteria like to hide and cause plaque build up and tooth decay. This helps to focus the brushing on the bottom of the teeth and inside the gums.

How Does Remineralizing Toothpaste Work?

As we previously mentioned, diet makes a difference in the health of your teeth, which means that what you put on your teeth also influences them. Most toothpastes contain fluoride, glycerin, or sodium lauryl sulfate, which is the compound that causes foaming when you brush. These ingredients can create a more acidic environment and compromise the health of your teeth. Remineralizing toothpastes use ingredients that supply the teeth with alkalizing minerals that strengthen them. When you start brushing with the toothpaste (below), you should notice a difference in how your teeth feel. Try it and let us know!

DIY Remineralizing Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • ¾ cup calcium powder
  • 1/3 cup xylitol
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 48 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Place the coconut oil in a heat-safe glass bowl and melt in the microwave.
  • Stir the rest of the ingredients into the coconut oil and mix until everything is well combined.
  • Pour the toothpaste into a glass storage jar and brush with a small amount twice daily.

Don’t you wish you could use a whitening toothpaste that didn’t harm the body with harsh chemicals? The majority of commercial toothpastes, especially the varieties with whitening agents, are filled with an assortment of harmful ingredients. Xylitol (made from GMO corn), fluoride, glycerin, GMO soy lethicin, and sodium laurel sulfate can collectively have detrimental effects on organs, the brain, the reproductive system, and hormones.

One of the things that may leave people skeptical about this DIY toothpaste is the color. How can a black toothpaste help to naturally whiten your teeth? Don’t let the color steer you away because it is filled with some powerful ingredients that are superstars in the DIY health world. Let’s check them out below.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

One of primary oral health benefits of coconut oil is that it works to fight the Streptococcus mutans bacterium, which can cause cavities, gingivitis, or other oral health issues.

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal helps to promote great oral hygiene by balancing the pH levels in your mouth. It also helps to whiten your teeth, removing coffee, tea, or berry stains.

Bentonite Clay

Bentonite clay is like a sponge, in that it expands and alters its electrical charge to absorb toxins and heavy metals. In oral care products, bentonite clay helps to neutralize bad bacteria and deliver and array of minerals that help remineralize teeth.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon melted virgin organic coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons filtered water
  • 1 dropper full of liquid stevia
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • ½ teaspoon activated charcoal
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a glass container and mix well with a wooden or rubber spoon.
  • Store this in a cool, dark place.
  • When you are ready to use, place a small amount on your toothbrush and brush your teeth for about two minutes. Rinse and spit out the toothpaste.
  • Don’t use this toothpaste every day because it can be harsh on sensitive gums.

The teeth and oral health systems are ever-changing environments, just like the rest of the organs and systems in the body. To promote a healthy mouth, it is optimal to care for the body with ingredients that aren’t secretly harming your teeth or gums. There are techniques to help naturally remineralize your teeth and there are DIY recipes designed to promote optimal oral health.

While you can care for your teeth with a variety of DIY products, keeping a healthy mouth first starts with a healthy diet. Continually eating foods that are difficult to digest and low in nutrients can result in a poor functioning digestive system. Always remember that your mouth emulates the health of your gut. Studies have shown that people who made the plant-based shift had improved oral hygiene, in addition to better functioning digestive systems. Combine your plant-based diet with the DIY practices below and people will be asking what your secrets to healthy teeth are!

Try Oil Pulling To Keep Your Mouth Healthy

Bad breath, medically known as halitosis, is typically the result of having an excess amount of toxins or bacteria in the mouth. The natural properties in coconut oil help to attack the bacteria, helping to naturally freshen your breath and oral health. Oil pulling works especially well on the Streptococcus mutans bacterium, which can cause cavities, gingivitis, or other oral health issues.

You Can Use Activated Charcoal To Whiten Your Teeth

Many videos of people brushing their teeth with charcoal products have surfaced around the web lately. Activated charcoal helps to promote great oral hygiene by balancing the pH levels in your mouth. It also helps to whiten your teeth, removing coffee, tea, or berry stains. Be careful not to brush with activated charcoal too much because it can be a bit abrasive to your gums and enamel.

Natural Rinse To Remove Plaque & Tartar

The development of oral diseases is only the first sign of neglecting your oral hygiene. Some oral diseases can lead to the development of other diseases that affect the whole body. Keeping your mouth clean and healthy not only keeps your teeth in good shape, but it also helps out the rest of your body. Use this DIY mouth rinse to practice good oral hygiene.

DIY Antibacterial Mouthwash

This antibacterial DIY mouthwash with antifungal properties can help keep your breath fresh. This mouthwash contains two powerful essential oils (tea tree and peppermint), which are not dangerous to your body. A study of essential oils on dental implants showed that they actually helped limit biofilm production.

DIY Toothpaste

One of the benefits of using a DIY toothpaste is that it doesn’t contain foaming agents. A lot of toothpastes contain foaming agents like sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) or sodium laurel suflate, which interfere with your taste buds by breaking up phospholipids on the tongue. SLS has also been linked to the development of canker sores.

Recent studies have revealed that coconut oil contains properties that work to fight the bacteria that are responsible for tooth decay. Certain enzymes in coconut oil work to inhibit the growth of various Streptococcus bacteria, some of which are acid-producing and toxic to gums and teeth.

Why Not Just Use Regular Toothpaste?

Did you know that fluoride has never been significantly proven to protect your teeth from cavity development? Continued fluoride consumption, which the body can absorb through mouthwashes or toothpastes, can lead to gastrointestinal disorders, osteoarthritis, essential enzyme inhibition, immune system suppression, and acute poisoning.

Rather than taking a risk, it is recommended to go the all-natural route and avoid toxic substances altogether. DIY toothpaste also lasts a lot longer than regular commercial toothpastes because you don’t need a lot when it comes time to brush. It can take some time to get used to the DIY toothpaste because people have been conditioned to like the minty flavors.

Why Turmeric?

Studies have shown that the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric are effective at preventing bad breath and plaque build-up. Turmeric has also been comparable to the anti-plaque and antimicrobial properties that commercial mouthwashes claim to have.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons organic virgin coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (try to get one that has not bee treated with chemicals)
  • a few drops food grade peppermint oil (optional)

Instructions:

  • Mix the coconut oil, turmeric, and baking soda in a bowl until you get a smooth consistency. If you are using the peppermint oil, mix it in as well.
  • Spoon the paste into an airtight, glass jar and store in a cool dry place.
  • Add a small amount (about the size of a pinky nail) to your toothbrush and start brushing. Make sure you don’t swallow the mixture.
  • Rinse your mouth with water when finished.

We have always been told to brush and floss our teeth. Some people are not as keen on flossing as others, but it does help to get food or bacteria out of areas that the toothbrush may not be able to reach. Brushing and flossing are undoubtedly necessary for a healthy mouth, but are these oral hygiene practices preventing you from getting cavities?

Recent studies have revealed that that the cause of cavities may be, first and foremost, a nutritional problem. Certain foods have a tremendous impact on your oral health and eating these foods, even if you are brushing and flossing, may cause you to develop cavities or tooth decay. This is why some researchers believe that it is possible to naturally heal and regenerate your teeth just like any other bone or bodily tissue.

Dr. Weston A. Price, who was a dentist and researcher, studied past groups of people all over the world and despite having no access to dentists or modern oral hygiene products, they had healthy teeth. Tooth decay was more prominent in other cultures with different diets. What was it about those diets that made people, who were living somewhat primitively, have near perfect oral health?

Through his research, Dr. Price found that these diets contained fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K2. These cultures consumed high fat diets, primarily eating animal fats from seafood, organ meats, plants, and raw milk and raw cheese (i.e. unpasteurized). Dr. Price discovered that fat-soluble vitamins, specifically vitamin K2, tell the body where to properly place minerals (in teeth and bones) and where not to place them (in joints or arteries).

Can You Reverse A Cavity?

Your teeth are like sponges; things can go in and things can go out. It stands to reason, then, that they can gain or lose minerals. If your teeth gain minerals (remineralize) faster than they lose them (demineralize), it is possible to avoid tooth decay and maintain oral health. You have to eat the right foods that promote remineralization in order to naturally repair cavities.

Foods That Promote Remineralization

  • Natto
  • Dark Leafy Greens (chard, spinach, or kale)
  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Avocados
  • Green & White Tea
  • Wild Caught Fish

Foods That Promote Demineralization

  • Packaged Oatmeal and Cereals (high in phytic acid)
  • Bread
  • Sugary Yogurt
  • Sugary Drinks
  • Processed Foods
  • Saltine Crackers
  • All High Glycemic Index Foods

Your Diet Affects Your Teeth

After years of research, many experts have concluded that diet plays as big a role in oral health as hygiene practices do. To help prevent cavities, it is important to avoid the foods that cause demineralization. You should also focus on including enough minerals and enough fat-soluble minerals to help with the remineralization process. The last factor is how well your body can absorb the minerals that you eat. It is best to minimize your consumption of foods that are high in phytic acid because they have been linked to mineral deficiencies, tooth decay, and osteoporosis.

If you want, you can make your own remineralizing toothpaste if you seek out the proper ingredients. Oil pulling is another great option and you can read this article for how to properly do it. You can also benefit from focusing on plant-based foods high in vitamins A, D, E, and K2.

When you are faced with a serious tooth problem, such as a cavity, chronic toothache, or need fillings replaced, you have some serious decisions to make if you are a health conscious person. While there are natural remedies to soothe toothaches or to help get rid of cavities, a trip to the dentist is sometimes necessary. If you have a serious problem with your teeth and need work done, try to seek out a dentist who practices under holistic dentistry or biological dentistry.

A holistic dentist typically tries to evaluate you as a whole and uses mercury-free substances for fillings. They also utilize digital X-rays and other technologies that aren’t as harmful to your body. If you are unable to find a dentist who practices holistic dentistry, then you are left with conventional dentists who will probably use harmful chemicals that will enter into your body, in order for you to have your teeth or tooth worked on. This is sometimes a better option than trying to suffer through the pain, which can be excruciating. If you are going to go to one of these dentists, you can take activated charcoal for the next couple days to draw out the chemicals. Another option is participating in the Full Body Cleanse to remove toxins and chemicals from your entire body.

Cavities

Cavities are caused by a combination of bacteria and food. Plaque is a clear substance that is always forming on your teeth and gums. The plaque on your teeth has bacteria, which feed on the sugars from the food you eat. The bacteria produce acids that attack your teeth for about 20 minutes after you eat, and this can cause tooth decay or cavities, especially if your oral hygiene isn’t good.

Clove Oil For Cavities

When you experience minor or even major toothache pain, you can rub essential oil of clove on the problem tooth or teeth until you can get yourself to a dentist. You may want to dilute a few drops of clove essential oil in a few drops of organic, virgin coconut oil, as the pure essential oil may be intense for sensitive gums or teeth.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling, which is a popular Ayurvedic remedy, can help reduce the bacteria that causes cavities. You can use sesame oil or organic, virgin coconut oil. Place 1 tablespoon of the desired oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 15-20 minutes. You can do this every morning before brushing your teeth for about a month to help remedy cavities.

Post Dentist Visit Recovery

Cilantro helps to counteract mercury toxicity and chemicals in the body. If you still have mercury in your mouth, it may be beneficial to start drinking freshly made vegetable juice that contains cilantro. You can also add cilantro to salsa, guacamole, salad dressings, or other dishes to help remove mercury from your system. You can’t go wrong by consuming fresh cilantro.

Cavities can occur in anyone, whether you are a little kid or an adult. A cavity is a form of tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth can form acids that eat away at a tooth or multiple teeth, which can lead to cavities, infection, and even tooth loss.  A tooth has three layers: enamel (the hard outer layer), dentin (the middle layer), and the pulp (the center of the tooth). If more layers are affected by tooth decay, the damage is usually worse. Cavities are extremely common, but it is best to treat them in the early stages before a larger infection or problem occurs.

What Causes Cavities?

Cavities are caused by a combination of bacteria and food. Plaque is a clear substance that is always forming on your teeth and gums. The plaque on your teeth has bacteria, which feed on the sugars from the food you eat. The bacteria produce acids that attack your teeth for about 20 minutes after you eat, and this can cause tooth decay or cavities, especially if your oral hygiene isn’t good.

Natural Remedies

Get Your Minerals

Because cavities can be caused by a lack of nutrients or minerals, it is beneficial to eat foods that are rich in vitamins D & K, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus. These foods can include leafy greens, bananas, sprouted beans, nuts, or seeds. Healthy fats like avocado and coconut oil can also be conducive to the health of your teeth.

Rinse With Lemon Water

You can mix the juice from a whole lemon with a glass of warm water. Rinse this solution around in your mouth after brushing your teeth, so it acts like a natural mouthwash. Do this twice daily and the anti-inflammatory properties in lemons may help soothe the cavity.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling, which is a popular Ayurvedic remedy, can help reduce the bacteria that cause cavities. You can use sesame oil or organic, non-hydrogenated coconut oil. Place 1 tablespoon of the desired oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 15-20 minutes. You can do this every morning before brushing your teeth for about a month to help remedy cavities.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a common home remedy for cavities because it can neutralize the acids in the mouth, which reduces the risk of developing gum disease or tooth decay. Because baking soda can be a bit abrasive, it is best to use it gently with a bit of olive oil. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with a little bit of warm water or olive oil, gently rub it on the teeth and gums, and rinse your mouth out with warm water after a few minutes. Do this 2-3 times a week.

Guavas

Guava leaves have been known to help remedy toothaches and gum disease because they have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and analgesic properties. There is also something in the leaves that can act as an anti-plaque agent. Wash a couple leaves, chew them up, and spit them out. Do this twice a day for a couple weeks.
