Whether you follow TikTok beauty trends or get lured into buying commercial beauty products, skin care is an ever-evolving field. There are no breakthroughs, tips, and hacks about how to best care for the body’s largest organ. With so many options to choose from, how do you know which skin care products are right for you? That can be very difficult, considering that each product has a handful of ingredients, some of which may do more harm than good.

Because more people are aware of the negative effects of commercial beauty products, DIY skin care products are more popular than ever. Simple ingredients, many of which have been used for centuries, can help address common skin issues. In case you need more proof, the following five natural skin care ingredients have loads of research to back up their efficacy. Continue reading to learn more about them.

Green Tea For Inflammation And Aging

Green tea is replete with polyphenols, offering a shocking 30% polyphenol antioxidant count by weight. Researchers state that the most notable antioxidant is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory properties. According to several studies, topical application of polyphenols can help repair sun-damaged skin. Some research even indicated that this topical application may reverse the signs of aging, such as reducing the appearance of dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Oat Extracts For Sensitive Skin

Some beauty experts consider oats, or oat extracts, to be the gold standard for sensitive skin. Both colloidal oatmeal and oat oil are beloved by estheticians for their ability to soothe sensitive skin. For example, colloidal oatmeal has a high lipid and antioxidant content, which helps protect the skin barrier. Colloidal oatmeal has many active nutrients, including vitamin E, ferric acid, and avenanthramides, which exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Many dermatologists recommend colloidal oatmeal for the treatment of eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Coconut Oil For Dry Skin

Soothing dryness should not be your only reason for using coconut oil topically on the skin. Coconut oil contains natural fatty acids that help nourish and smooth out the skin. The reason coconut oil is particularly beneficial for dry skin is because it helps increase moisture levels in the skin, due to its occlusive properties. It also helps to improve skin barrier function, which is why people with eczema or psoriasis find coconut oil so soothing.

Aloe Vera For Dullness

You are probably most familiar with aloe vera for its ability to soothe sunburns and accelerate the healing from burns or mild scrapes. It has been a staple in natural skin care for centuries because of its medicinal properties. Researchers found that aloe vera contains more than 75 (and potentially up to 200) different active compounds, such as sugars, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and salicylic acids. Aloe vera is excellent for hydrating the skin because it is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to the skin.

Researchers note that aloe vera has proven to increase the water content of the stratum corneum, the skin’s outermost layer. But wait, there’s more! Aloe vera may help brighten the skin, due to its content of aloesin. One study found that it helped treat UV-induced and post-acne hyperpigmentation. Topical application of aloesin may directly inhibit hyper pigmented skin from producing more melanin, which can cause the formation of dark spots.

Jojoba Oil For Oil Control

The chemical structure of jojoba oil is very similar to human cells, making it a popular ingredient in skin care products. Jojoba oil may help reduce oiliness by modulating the skin’s production of sebum. Because of the iodine content, jojoba oil also works to balance bacterial overgrowth, which can lead to breakouts. Finally, jojoba oil is rich in skin-soothing ingredients, such as vitamin E, copper, B-complex vitamins, and zinc, which give the oil anti-inflammatory properties.

Even though they may not be as expensive or fancy, handmade gifts tend to mean more than those bought in the store. Obviously, a homemade sugar scrub is not the same as a brand new laptop, but top-tier electronics are not always in the budget. Perhaps the laptop is in the budget, but you want to give a lot of gifts to friends, colleagues, and family. A great way to do that is by making your own beauty gifts.

Heartfelt, homemade gifts always put a smile on the gift receiver’s face. It’s a beautiful gesture and people appreciate the time you took to make them something. The great thing about homemade sugar scrubs, bath bombs, soaps, or lotions is that you can make large batches and portion them out into small containers. Decorate the containers to your liking! You can even adhere labels on them that detail the ingredients or instructions to whatever you make.

Since dry skin is very common during the winter, there are several DIY beauty recipes in this article that help moisturize the skin. There’s nothing wrong with giving a gift that improves skin health! Your gifts may be so well received that you have some repeat customers the following year. Or maybe you share the recipe(s) with your friends and family so they can enjoy the products year round.

We wish you all a wonderful holiday season and hope these gifts go over well, should you decide to make and gift them. They are perfect for anyone on a budget, and the best part is that they are free of harmful chemicals. Bath bombs are fun and frizzy creations that transform your bath from a simple soak to a tranquil experience. The heavenly aromas and exciting colors make bath time a new experience, but bath bombs can be quite costly. If you’re a budget-conscious person and enjoy making your own beauty products, give yourself, and your skin, a gift by making these lavender oatmeal bath bombs.

Lavender is the perfect scent if you need to invite relaxation into your life. Combine the calming scent with the skin-soothing properties of oats, baking soda, Epsom salt, and the other ingredients in these bath bombs, and you’ve got one great DIY product. Lavender, oats, and Epsom salt are excellent for dry or itchy skin, so these bath bombs are quite therapeutic, both for the mind and body. You can keep them for yourself, or you can package them nicely to give as gifts.

How To Make Homemade Bath Bombs

Ultimately, it’s a lot easier than it seems. We just want to make that very clear. It’s essentially a combination of dry ingredients with some liquid ingredients that you compress in sphere molds. The key instruction in this process is to add the liquid ingredients, specifically water, to the dry ingredients very slowly. This is to avoid any fizzing because you want that to occur in the bath and the bath only. Once they are firm, they are ready to make a splash in your bath. The reason that they fizz is because they contain baking soda.

Benefits Of Oats For The Skin

Oats are some of the best breakfast ingredients that offer fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrates, but they’re also great for the skin. If you have dry skin, acne, or excess oil production, oats have the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to calm these conditions. When it comes to dry skin, which is all to common in colder weather, oats work to naturally remove dead skin cells and moisturize. Additionally, the mild pH level work to cool inflamed skin that occurs during a rash or infection.

Benefits Of Lavender Essential Oil For The Skin

The legendary lavender flower has a fragrant aroma that helps to naturally calm the mind. It has popular use in aromatherapy and is a favorite among essential oil enthusiasts. Since acne is often caused by dry skin that produces excess sebum, you need an ingredient that helps to gently hydrate and moisturize. Lavender essential oil works to gently moisturize the skin and is non-comedogenic for your pores, which helps to decrease acne. Lavender essential oil is also an anti-inflammatory superstar, helping to calm inflamed areas on the skin, for example, rashes, eczema or psoriasis.

Benefits Of Baking Soda For The Skin

Can baking soda solve your skin problems? For some people, the answer is, “Yes!” Baking soda is a safe ingredient to use on your skin, as it works to clear up acne, remove dead skin cells, tighten pores, and fight skin infections. The anti-inflammatory properties of baking soda help reduce the frequency of acne, and may even discourage pimples from appearing again. Baking soda also helps to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to contribute to a healthier glow.

DIY Lavender Oatmeal Bath Bombs

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup baking soda
 • 1/2 cup citric acid
 • 1/2 cup cornstarch
 • 1/4 cup Epsom salt
 • 1/2 cup quick cook oats
 • 1.5 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
 • 1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil
 • 1/2 teaspoon water (only if you absolutely need it)
 • bath bomb mold

Instructions:

 • In a large bowl, whisk the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, Epsom salt, and oats.
 • Slowly but surely, add the coconut oil and lavender essential oil. Mix thoroughly and only, we repeat only, add the water if necessary. And do so slowly if you add the water.
 • The way to test whether or not you need water is by grabbing a handful of the mixture, squeezing it, and seeing it it stays together without falling apart. If it does, you don’t need water.
 • Compress the mixture into sphere molds and make sure to press down firmly in order to ensure that the bath bombs are compacted. You can either use metal sphere molds or silicone molds.
 • After compressing the bath bombs, remove them from the molds and set them out to air dry before storing them in an airtight container.
 • To use, drop one bath bomb in a warm bath and allow yourself to slip into a relaxed state of mind.

For most people, the skin care routine starts outside the shower. This typically involves cleansers, toners, moisturizers, lotions, oils, and more. It’s interesting that some people don’t recognize that their bathing routine plays a large role in the overall health and appearance of their skin.

People buy store bought soaps, body washes, and shampoos because it’s convenient to do so. Some of the smells are enchanting, but you can’t smell the chemicals that damage the skin. The problem with most commercial body washes is the ingredient list. The long list of ingredients often contains some of the following, hard-to-pronounce ingredients:

 • Ammonium laureth sulfate
 • Glycolic acid
 • Methylparaben
 • Urea
 • Alpha hydroxy acid
 • Triethanolamine
 • Triclosan
 • Cocamidopropyl betaine
 • Disodium cocoamphodiacetate
 • Salicyclic acid
 • Phenoxyethanol

And those are just some of the harmful ingredients! Now, we do have one disclaimer: an ingredient with a complex name isn’t always bad for you. That doesn’t mean you need to trust these chemical soaps, though. In fact, we recommend that you avoid them and create your own homemade body wash. You’ll know exactly which ingredients are benefitting and nourishing your skin. We’ve highlighted two excellent ingredients from the body wash in this article below.

Oats

This classic superfood does wonders for your digestive system, but it’s also great for your skin. You can incorporate oats into scrubs, masks, bath soaks, soaps, and more! If you have dry skin, the lipids and proteins in oats help to provide optimal moisture. Oats also have anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce itchiness, which is beneficial for people with eczema or psoriasis. Since you will be incorporating oats into your body wash, you should know that oats have powerful cleansing properties. Oats contain saponin, which works to wash away impurities and re-mineralize the skin without wiping away essential nutrients. Finally, oats help you strip away dead skin cells to help you achieve a rejuvenated, vibrant complexion.

Avocado Oil

Just like oats, avocado oil is both beneficial to include in your diet and your skin care routine. Rich in vitamins A, D, & E, omega-3 fatty acids, lecithin, and potassium, avocado oil helps to moisture the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis. These nutrients are easily absorbed, which helps your skin retain moisture for a lot longer. Avocado oil is also similar to oats in that it has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflamed skin. Be it acne or some sort of redness associated with eczema, avocado oil can help hydrate the skin, calm it, and leave it feeling refreshed. The best part is that there is no oily residue!

DIY Oatmeal Lavender Body Wash

Ingredients:

 • 3 cups filtered water
 • 1/4 cup rolled oats
 • 1/4 cup liquid Castile soap
 • 6-12 drops lavender essential oil
 • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
 • 2 teaspoons avocado oil
 • Foaming dispenser

Instructions:

 • Pour the water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Once it is boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat.
 • Add the oats to a heat-safe glass bowl and pour the boiling water over the oats. Let this sit for about one to two hours before straining the water to remove the oats. Make sure you save the water and discard the oats.
 • Pour the Castile soap, lavender essential oil, vitamin E oil, and avocado oil in a small bowl and whisk to combine.
 • Add enough of the soap/oil mixture to fill about 10-15% of your soap dispenser. Pour the oatmeal water into the dispenser until it’s almost full.
 • Screw on the top and you’re good to soap!

The post 7 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Razor Burn appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Most people who shave have experienced razor burn at least once in their lifetime. Shaving isn’t for everyone (no judgment here!), but the people who do shave want to avoid itchy, red bumps as much as possible. Whether you shave your face, legs, underarms, or bikini area, there are natural remedies to help relieve razor burn.

Prevention Is The Best Protection

Before we give you home remedies to relieve razor burn, it’s important to understand that you can prevent discomfort in the first place. It all starts with proper hair removal. Before you shave, dermatologists recommend exfoliating with a sugar scrub or wash cloth. When you apply the shaving gel or cream, leave it on for 10 minutes before using a sharp razor. Once you finish shaving, wash the shaved area with antiseptic or antibacterial soap and rinse with cold water. All of these steps elongate the shaving process, but they do reduce your risk of razor burn.

7 Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Razor Burn

Apple Cider Vinegar

The anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of apple cider vinegar make it an excellent remedy for razor burn. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which can alleviate the irritation of micro-cuts left behind after shaving. The citric acid in apple cider vinegar is also an alpha hydroxy acid, meaning it can increase cell turnover to unclog ingrown hairs. Mix equal parts water and apple cider vinegar, dab a cotton ball in the solution, and apply to the affected area. You can enhance this process by applying chilled black tea bags on the skin afterwards.

Tea Tree Oil

Many studies on tea tree oil found that it exhibited antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Tea tree oil has been incorporated into traditional healing practices to help soothe burns and accelerate the healing of minor wounds. It is very important to dilute tea tree oil in a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil, or olive oil. Because tea tree oil has astringent properties, apply a diluted mixture to razor burn to soothe irritation and reduce the itchy, burning sensation.

Baking Soda

The use of baking soda to soothe razor burn is an old-fashioned remedy. All you need to do is mix one tablespoon of baking soda into one cup of filtered water. Stir the mixture to ensure it is thoroughly combined. Dab a cotton ball in mixture and then apply it to the affected razor burn area. Let it dry on the skin before you rinse it with cold water. Do this two to three times a day to reduce redness and stinging.

An Oatmeal Bath

Traditionally used for soothing symptoms of dermatitis, eczema, or general itchiness, oatmeal baths are excellent if you have razor burn, especially on your legs. The beta-glucan in oatmeal works to create a protective and moisturized barrier on the skin. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of oatmeal also accelerate healing and reduce the red bumps. If you don’t want to add one to two cups of oats to a lukewarm bath, you can mix equal parts yogurt and ground oats in a bowl and apply that to the razor burn. Let it sit on the skin for 30 minutes before you wash it off with warm water.

Black Tea Bags

You don’t have to go out and buy the most expensive black tea for this to work. Black tea contains tannic acid, which helps to reduce any inflammation or redness by soothing the skin. It also helps with the burning sensation of razor burn. Steep black tea back in warm water for about ten minutes before rubbing it on your razor burn. Rinse with warm water after three minutes and repeat twice daily.

Witch Hazel

A lot of people use witch hazel to help clear up blemishes or bad acne because it has powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make it an excellent home remedy for razor burn. The tannins in witch hazel actually repair broken skin caused by razor burn when you apply it to the affected area. There’s no need to mix witch hazel with anything. Simply apply it to the razor burn to accelerate healing.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is one of the best natural remedies for reducing inflammation or burning on the skin. You can squeeze the gel from a fresh aloe leaf onto the razor burn area and let it sit for 10 minutes to provide relief. Don’t buy aloe vera gel with artificial colors and alcohol from the store because that won’t help. The topical application of fresh aloe vera gel helps improve the skin’s barrier, and many studies found that it exhibits anti-inflammatory activity upon interacting with the skin.

The post How To Avoid Dry Skin This Winter appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Winter is a time to don your favorite warm clothing items, but it also brings an array of holiday treats and overpriced seasonal lattes. One unfortunate thing about winter is that a high percentage of people experience dry skin. The combination of colder temperatures, lower humidity levels, and heated interiors makes the skin extremely prone to dryness. While there are commercial products with synthetic ingredients that promise to keep the skin hydrated, they rarely do the trick and you end up lathering your body with chemicals in excess.

The colder months do not discriminate against skin type or complexion. In the colder temperatures, the skin restricts blood vessels to retain heat. This ultimately dries out the exterior layers of the skin, causing people to experience red, rough, or itchy skin. Fortunately for you, we have tips to help you naturally combat dry skin this winter, no matter where you live in the northern hemisphere.

Shorten Your Showers

After a long day out in the cold, few things compare to relaxing under hot running water. Dermatologists say that long showers harm the skin’s lipid layer. The combination of hot water and chemical soaps dry out the skin, which is why it is optimal to use natural, moisturizing soaps in a shower that only lasts 5-10 minutes, once a day.

Moisturize After A Shower

When you exit the shower, pat (don’t rub) yourself dry. Immediately after you do this, apply a natural moisturizer because the skin can easily lock in the moisture when it is somewhat damp. You may want to check this DIY, chemical-free moisturizer.

Consider A Humidifier

Because lower humidity levels can dry out the skin, it can be beneficial to invest in a humidifier. You don’t have to leave it on all day; rather, it is best to leave it on at night because the skin does restorative work while you sleep. Set the humidifier at about 60%, which should work to replenish the skin’s outer layers.

Take An Oatmeal Bath

People have used oatmeal baths to moisturize the skin for thousands of years. Soaking in an oatmeal bath allows the skin to absorb the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and cleansing properties of oatmeal. Blend about one cup of old-fashioned oats in a food processor or blender until you get a fine powder. Stir this into a tub of hot water and then soak in it for 15-20 minutes. We know we said to limit your shower time, but your skin needs time to absorb the hydrating properties of the oatmeal.

Eat Prebiotics And Probiotics

To prevent dry skin, it is important to stock up on ceramides, which help the skin retain moisture. Start eating prebiotic and probiotic foods, both of which work to increase the body’s natural production of ceramides. Not to mention, prebiotics and probiotics help balance the skin’s pH level and they naturally improve gut flora.

]]>

Many people have eczema, which is a term that can be used to describe rash-like skin conditions or the primary condition of atopic dermatitis. Roughly 30 million Americans have eczema, which commonly starts during infancy and continues into childhood. Sometimes people grow out of the condition, but some people have it into adulthood. Eczema is the inflammation of the skin, which often results in red and raised skin, and people with dryer, more sensitive skin often suffer from the condition. Many people will have rashes on their necks, elbows, knees, behind the ears, wrists, ankles, or other areas that bend.

To spread awareness about National Eczema Week, we are striving to make people more aware of the causes, symptoms, and natural remedies for eczema. Strive to use home remedies to naturally improve the condition. You can do your own research about natural remedies, using this article as a starting point.

What Causes Eczema?

The exact cause for eczema is unknown, but the common belief is that it is caused by either hereditary or environmental factors. If a parent has eczema, there is a greater possibility that the child will develop it. On the other hand, research suggests that the cause of eczema is linked to hay fever or asthma. It may also be caused by another allergic disease, or one of the following:

 • Irritants (soaps and detergents, disinfectants like chlorine, or contact with juices from fruit, vegetables, or meat)
 • Allergens (house dust mites, pollens, pets, mold, or Dandruff)
 • Microbes (viruses, certain fungi, or bacteria)
 • Temperature (hot weather, high or low humidity, or sweat)
 • Food (dairy products, wheat, soy products, nuts or seeds, and eggs)
 • Stress
 • Hormones

Natural Remedies

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a great natural solution that can be ingested or applied directly on the skin. If you mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with 8oz of water and consume that twice a day, this can help to restore your body’s pH balance, which is sometimes all that is needed to help eczema. For topical use, mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and distilled water and spray this on the affected area several times a day. You can also add apple cider vinegar to baths if the eczema is larger.

Take An Oatmeal Bath

An oatmeal bath can help reduce skin irritation because it helps moisturize the skin. Mix one cup of blended oats in a lukewarm bath and soak in it for 15-20 minutes every day until symptoms decrease.

Use Coconut Oil

Since coconut oil is an incredible moisturizer and has antimicrobial properties, it can help reduce the symptoms of eczema if applied to the affected area(s). For best results, gently apply warm coconut oil nightly before bed, as this softens the skin and fights bacteria from multiplying. Symptoms may take a few days to reduce.

Aloe Vera

Because aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties, it is commonly used to reduce the symptoms of eczema. Applying the aloe vera to the affected area(s) helps to restore your skin’s pH balance and relieve itching and irritation. Like coconut oil, aloe vera also has moisturizing and antimicrobial properties.

Drink A Lot Of Water

Make sure you stay hydrated! Drinking alkaline water can be beneficial as it helps restore the body’s natural pH balance. The suggested amount of water to drink is eight 8oz glasses per day, but a better measurement is to drink half your bodyweight in ounces of water. If you weight 150lbs and divide that by two to get 75, you should drink 75oz of water each day.

Magnesium Bath

Taking a magnesium bath can sometimes decrease the symptoms of eczema. If the person can tolerate the soak, mix magnesium flakes or Epsom salt into the warm water. You can also add sea salt, a few drops of vanilla extract, and the essential oil(s) of your choice. It helps to deep clean your pores, working to clear your skin of oils and bacteria.

A pleasantly warm bath is always relaxing. Maybe you like to sing and hear your voice resonate in confines of your bathroom, where you obviously are the best singer in the world. Perhaps you like to soak in the water to soothe muscle pain or light candles and play the sounds of the ocean to wash away the stress of your day. Whatever your reason for taking a bath, there are things you can add to your bathwater to make your skin look healthy, young, and rejuvenated. Try out some of the following ingredients to see the benefits.

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is a great way to naturally relieve stress, but essential oils also have beneficial properties that can improve the health of your skin. Additionally, oils like lavender, tea tree, Frankincense, lemongrass, or eucalyptus can help soothe sore muscles and headaches.

Raw Honey

Raw honey has been known to help cleanse your pores, while simultaneously hydrating dry skin. Adding 2 cups of raw honey to your bath can deep clean your skin and leave it feeling silky smooth. A 15-20 minute soak should be more than enough time.

Steel Cut Oats

If you have a skin irritation, eczema, dermatitis, chickenpox, or abnormally dry skin, an oatmeal bath can reduce skin irritation by moisturizing the skin. Mix 1 cup of oats with warm water in your bath and soak in it for 10-15 minutes to rejuvenate the skin.

Ginger

Ginger has amazing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it great for fighting colds, sinus congestion, or respiratory issues. When you add ginger to your bath, it actually warms your body up and helps you sweat out toxins, which helps you naturally get rid of the virus.

Fresh Lemon Juice

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that helps nourish skin cells. Add 1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice to your bath to leave your skin looking shiny and healthy. The lemon juice helps shrink your pores, which makes it harder for excess dirt and oils to enter; so add this to your baths to reap the benefits.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt works to naturally exfoliate the skin. It is also rich in magnesium, which helps to lower stress hormones in the body. This is why some people try floatation therapy. Using Epsom salt can also help reduce wrinkles or fine lines!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the best things you can use to help your body reach an alkaline state. Neutralizing your pH levels makes your body more effective in fighting bacteria, viruses, or infections. Add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath and soak in the water for about 10 minutes to draw out toxins and your skin will feel hydrated and refreshed.

Baking Soda

If you have a bad sunburn, baking soda can help naturally soothe the burning sensation. It can also help you naturally draw toxins out of your skin. The amount of baking soda you add to a bath will vary depending on how sensitive your skin is. Start with ¼ cup and increase the amount if necessary.
