Before the New Year begins, people do their best to get their ducks in a row to achieve resolutions. The easy part is saying that you will do whatever your resolution is. Once the first couple weeks of the New Year pass, motivation begins to dwindle. Exercising every day turns into exercising a couple times per week. Reading every night gets replaced by your favorite TV shows before bed. Eventually, you abandon the resolution altogether, leaving you heavy with the feeling of failure.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of self-loathing when you don’t achieve your goals. If your plan to save money or lose weight doesn’t work out, your self-esteem can take a big hit. Failure is an inevitable part of life and nobody is perfect, so there’s no reason to beat yourself up for abandoning resolutions. More often than not, the people who embrace failure often generate more motivation to succeed.

Why Do New Year’s Resolutions Fail?

Do you want the complete, honest truth? Let us first tell you that resolutions are problematic, primarily because they aspirational. This means that people think that setting these goals will change who they are, but the authentic self can never be silenced. So how do you maintain commitment to your resolutions when they are the farthest things from what you know to be true? Resolutions are often so grandiose that they are not easy to commit to, causing self-doubt and eventual failure. That’s why it’s better to set intentions and break resolutions up into smaller, more manageable goals.

If you recently gave up on your New Year’s resolution and feel down in the dumps, the following tips will help you get back on the horse. It’s never too late to bounce back and focus on strategy and success!

Reframe Your Failure

It’s easy to look at your failure through a negative lens, but failing at a resolution is not a poor reflection of your character. It’s best to analyze failure so that you can learn from it, improve, and ultimately try again. Through failure, you can see where you thrive and where your weaknesses are. Plus, you build up resilience when you emerge from the ashes of your failure to try again.

Acknowledge Your Strengths And Weaknesses

When you fail at anything, the hardest thing to do is to see where you succeeded. You failed at achieving your goal, so you naturally point out weaknesses, but it’s constructive to analyze your strengths as well. In fact, when you examine both your weaknesses and your strengths, you can correct yourself for the future and invite change into your life.

Keep Time On Your Side

The wheels can easily come off the resolution wagon, and one of the most common causes is poor time management. If getting fit is your goal, you have to plan out daily workouts and make them work with your schedule. Rather than stressing out beyond control, you abandon your workouts to focus on making breakfast for the kids, working on freelance projects, or whatever else demands your attention. Time management, in and of itself, is a great resolution to have, but you don’t have to wait for the New Year to practice time management. When you figure out how to make space for your resolution, you’ll have greater success.

Applaud Your Efforts

You may not think that you deserve a pat on the back, but you did put some effort into your resolution. That’s worth something! Don’t deny yourself a little self-appreciation. Your efforts have merit and are worth celebrating. If you want to succeed with future resolutions, you have to be able to encourage yourself, even if you don’t hit your goals all the time.

Set Yourself Up For Success

When you don’t see a resolution through, it’s easy to see that your goals may have been out of reach from the start. That shouldn’t stop you from trying again, though. When you come back for round two, be sure to evaluate your past processes to implement change for your future goals. Plan your route, so to speak, and expect a couple twists and turns along the way. The reality is that the road to accomplishing your goals is not smooth and flat. Realistic expectations will allow you to invest more time and effort into your journey. Be aware of the setbacks, acknowledge them when they arise, and keep moving forward.

With 2024 just around the corner, plans are coming together to create one final memory of 2023. You don’t have to give 2023 a grand farewell because going out on the town isn’t for everyone. In fact, it can be quite irritating and tricky to coordinate, especially if your plans involve a lot of people. Not to mention, creating a plan that pleases everyone is always a difficult feat.

You can end 2023 on a happy note without attending a large party or special event. Some people like to see comedy shows or concerts, while others enjoy staying home. If you fall into the latter category then this article is for you. Here are some unique ways to welcome 2024!

Midnight Yoga Session

Are you a fitness geek? Is your goal to add more fitness into your life in 2024? Pledge to make 2024 a fruitful year for your health by starting it with a midnight yoga session. Consider coordinating this plan with a few friends, or bust a solo mission, but a group can provide more support and encouragement. Take your mats out to a garden area and begin your session when the clock strikes midnight. Alternatively, end your session with corpse pose to ring in the new year. Yoga helps to relieve stress and restore balance to prepare you for a good night’s rest.

Outdoor Movie Night

Make New Year’s Eve memorable by organizing an outdoor movie night. Transform your backyard, or the backyard of a friend’s house, into a cozy cinema setting. Set up a projector, hang some fairy lights or string lights, and get out some comfortable chairs and cozy blankets. Consider making a large batch of a warming beverage, such as hot cider, hot chocolate, or even a large batch of chai tea. Poll a few movie options between your group and see which one prevails. There’s nothing like a little slice of nostalgia to ring in 2024.

Starry Night Picnic

If the weather permits (and this also applies to the above suggestion), welcome 2024 with a starry night picnic. Pack some delicious snacks, some warm drinks, and cozy blankets and jackets. You can plan this picnic in several unique ways. Head to a nearby park and watch the fireworks, remain in your backyard, head to the top of your building, or make a weekend out of it and visit a national park. If you choose the last option, the night will be quiet and stars should be in full view. Bask in the serenity of the peaceful night and gaze up at the stars with the one(s) you love. Spending the night solo isn’t a bad move either!

Time Capsule Tradition

Organize some friends, family, or even some neighbors to celebrate a time capsule tradition for New Year’s Eve. Encourage people to contribute letters or mementos and bury your time capsule at a designated spot. It’s up to you when you choose to open the time capsule next. Perhaps you dig it up in a year, five years, or 20 years! Opening your time capsule often creates a beautiful and sentimental tradition of celebrating the passage of time.

Virtual Countdown Party

The beautiful thing about technology is that it can easily connect you to other people, relatives, and friends spread out around the globe. Host a virtual countdown party in the era of global connectivity! Due to the pandemic, your virtual connectivity game should be strong! Create games, share your resolutions, and countdown to the beginning of 2024 together.

Focusing on fitness, improving your diet, and achieving better mental health are sound New Year’s resolutions. Don’t overlook the changes you need to make in order to reach your financial goals, though. If you keep your finances in mind, you can set a plan in motion that will encourage a more prosperous future.

Right now is the perfect time to plan out the changes you want to make next year, given that 2023 is coming to a close. If you want to secure a more financially stable future, there are impactful, money-focused resolutions that you may want to consider. That doesn’t mean you have to abandon fitness goals, but you may want to consider starting the year with your finances in mind. Explore the following options and see if they make your resolution list.

Quit Your Regular Savings Account And Open A High-Yield Option

It’s always a great idea to save because that provides a sense of security. The unfortunate reality is that savings accounts tend to fall short in regards to earning substantial interest. Take your financial future to the next level by closing your regular savings account and opting for a high-yield savings account instead. A high-yield savings account allows you to grow your money at a faster pace, considering that they have higher interest rates than regular savings accounts. Do a quick search or consult your financial advisor to find which high-yield savings account is right for you.

Invest In Your Financial Knowledge

The world of finance constantly changes, so staying informed is vital to your financial success. One potential resolution you can adopt in 2024 is to invest more time in expanding your financial literacy. That may look like reading books or articles, meeting with a financial advisor, or taking online courses about finances. When you understand the intricacies of taxes, personal finance, and investing, you can make better decisions that aid your long-term financial goals.

Create A Budget And Stick To It

If you want financial success, you have to learn to budget. Begin the year by creating a realistic budget that takes your income, expenses, and savings goals into account. Track your spending in a diligent way and make adjustments where necessary. If you manage your budget successfully, you can understand where your money is going and you’ll help yourself save more. A great first step to budgeting is to start making coffee or tea at home if you buy a coffee out every day. If you eat lunch out, consider meal prepping to help save more money.

Move Some Savings To A Certificate Of Deposit

If you want to maximize your savings, explore different investment options. Traditional savings accounts offer safety, but they don’t have the best interest rates that keep up with inflation. A regular savings account, for example, has an average 0.46% interest rate, which is lower than the current inflation rate. Rather than settling for a low interest rate, diversify your savings and set aside  some to a certificate of deposit (CD). A CD offers fixed interest rates, so you can leave your money deposited in the account until the CD matures. Explore the options available to you because there are so many out there. If you leave your money in a different type of account, you are potentially passing up an easy way to earn more money.

Review And Update Your Insurance Policies

You cannot predict your future, which is why having the right insurance coverage can help your financial security. Take the time to review your insurance policies, including health, life, home, and car insurance policies. Does your coverage align with your current needs? If it doesn’t, contact your insurance providers to adjust your policies and provide a safety net.

For most people, the beginning of the year is a chance to accomplish new goals and develop better habits. What happens to all of that excitement and energy after the ball drops at midnight? How quickly does that ambition fade and how likely are you to see your New Year’s goals through? In this article, we explain what the most common resolutions are and the likelihood of intentions turning into reality.

A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. adults looked at participants’ overall outlook surrounding types of resolutions and how much they prioritized them. In 2022, the same Forbes Health/OnePoll survey concluded that prioritizing mental health was the top resolution for 2023. For 2024, fitness was at the top of this year’s survey list. 62% of participants said they felt pressured to set a resolution, with women feeling slightly more pressured than men. Overall, 48% of people wanted to improve fitness in 2024. Of that percentage, 55% say that physical and mental health are of equal importance.

In this year’s survey, more people cited fitness as a top resolution than improving finances. What may or may not surprise you is that women (52%) in the survey were more likely than men (42%) to focus on fitness. The great news is that 80% of people in the survey felt confident that they would be able to reach their goals in 2024.

Most Common New Year’s Resolutions

In 2024, the OnePoll survey found some resolutions to be more common than others. The most popular goals for 2024 are:

  • Improving fitness (48%)
  • Improving finances (38%)
  • Improving mental health (36%)
  • Losing weight (34%)
  • Improving diet (32%)

Other, less popular resolutions included traveling more (6%), regular meditation (5%), drinking less alcohol (3%), and performing better at work (3%). That last one either suggests that people don’t want to excel at work, or that they feel progressing at work is not necessary.

How Common Are New Year’s Resolutions?

Setting a New Year’s resolution is a very common practice within the U.S. A poll from 2022 reported that 37% of Americans had a goal or resolution in mind for 2023. 87% said they were somewhat likely to keep that goal throughout the year. Another study found that the practice of setting a resolution may be more common in the U.S. Similar polls in Sweden, for example, found that just 12% to 14% of people set resolutions or goals.

Regarding New Year’s resolutions, American adults can also be very ambitious. A survey from 2020 revealed that about two out of every five respondents already had a goal for the new year. Survey authors noted that 18% of people from that survey had multiple goals.

How Long Does The Average Resolution Last?

Do you set lofty goals for the new year and then realize that you are no longer pursuing them by March? Well, you can rest easy because you are not alone in that camp. Failing at New Year’s resolutions is a very common practice, but that is typically because people set lofty goals that are not feasible. There is no point in setting a goal to lose 20 pounds in one month, especially if you haven’t done any preparation to detail how you will make that goal happen. If you want to quit drinking coffee and don’t start tapering off prior to the beginning of the year, you may abandon your goal very quickly.

The types of goals you set will determine whether or not you achieve them. To be fair, your personality and drive also factor into the equation. You are more likely to have success with action-oriented goals within the first year. Avoidance-oriented goals (like quitting alcohol or abandoning carbs) don’t do as well. The beauty of resolutions is that you do not need confetti, fireworks, or a ball to drop to spark a fresh start. Any time of year is the perfect time to begin a resolution. You decide when to make a change and don’t need to wait for January 1st to set out to achieve your goals.

]]>

Some people spend hours journaling about New Year’s goals or resolutions. There’s hope in their spirit and determination in their heart, but is there a plan in place? For the most part, many people abandon their New Year’s resolutions within the first two months of the year. This is because resolutions are unrealistic. It may be better to try manifestations instead.

Why Don’t Resolutions Work?

According to historical accounts, the first New Year’s resolutions were invented by the ancient Babylonians. They promised the gods that they would pay their debts at the beginning of the year. If they followed through with these promises, the gods would bestow them with blessings. The ancient Romans followed a similar tradition, and so did the early Christians, pondering the mistakes of the previous year on the first day of the New Year.

Resolutions have a history of anticipation and appreciation, both for the past and future. The New Year marks the end of one cycle, and the beginning of a new one, but resolutions seem to have little to no meaning nowadays. Resolutions are nice in theory, but things get lost from thinking of a resolution to actually following through with it.

What Does It Mean To Manifest Something?

By definition, a manifestation boils down to one important ideal: if you think it, you can have it. Essentially, you have the ability and power to make something happen in reality that came from your thoughts or beliefs. By putting all of your intentions towards this one thing, you’ll see it happen in real time, and that’s the power of manifestation. It can be something as simple as getting a pet, or a more complex manifestation like buying a house.

What Are Manifestations?

Similar to resolutions, manifestations have a lengthy history, dating back to a time when witches thrived. Manifestations also transcended to the teachings of Buddhism, helping people turn thoughts into actions. A manifestation is very similar to the law of attraction, which states that whatever you focus on will grow. You don’t have to stress about every little detail in order to achieve your goal. As a matter of fact, that way of thinking only sets you up for failure. That doesn’t mean that you get to neglect the work, though. You must work in order to manifest your desires, but you also have to put some trust in the universe that whatever is meant for you will find its way into your path.

How To Create A New Year’s Manifestation

In order to manifest your dreams, you have to consciously think about what the definition of a fulfilling life is for you. What do you wish to create? Once you answer this question, you can begin your path to manifestation!

Be Grateful For The Past

If you want to create a brighter future, you must first show appreciation for the past. According to several clinical studies, there’s a link between gratitude and increased overall health. Gratitude is the appreciation of what is both valuable and meaningful to you. On New Year’s Eve, it can be beneficial to take some time to think about the past year and be thankful for the blessings you had, hardships you overcame, or things that made you appreciate life. The idea is that the more gratitude you express, the more positivity you’ll attract.

Visualization Is Power

Many motivational speakers and self-help professionals agree that visualization can help you harness your creative powers. By creating a compelling or vivid image in the mind, your brains programs the reticular activating system to notice new things. This process almost magnetizes or attracts what it is that you visualize!

Write Down Your Manifestations

Get a pen and paper, people! When you write down your desires in detail because it’s much easier to put them into action. Detail is key, so you want to be specific about the thing you’re trying to manifest. If it’s a new job, for example, write down exactly what you want to do, where you want to work, and even the area where the office is located. It’s better to write them in the present tense, as though you’ve already manifested your desire.

Believe In Your Manifestations

Sometimes, people may think that they don’t deserve what they’ve wished for, or that a manifestation isn’t going to help achieve their desire. It’s important to believe in your manifestations, which is why meditating on them can be a helpful exercise. A 10-minute meditation session per day can help you enter the new, positive reality of your manifestation.

New Year’s resolutions are the talk of the town, with the majority of people looking to kick off 2023 in the healthiest way possible. For most people, the New Year is a fresh start and a chance to begin a new chapter. Perhaps you turn the page on old dietary patterns and adopt a healthier eating plan, or decide to attend boot camp classes to encourage weight loss. Whatever your resolution is, we applaud you for it and only want the best for you.

Although New Year’s resolutions are positive, the harsh reality is that only 8-10% of people successfully achieve their goals. That is quite a bleak statistic, but this is because most people embark on resolutions without a plan or direction. Don’t do yourself a disservice by walking blindly into your health and fitness goals. Take the time to figure out what you want and what you need to do to hit that mark. Ambiguity won’t get you anywhere, but the following strategies from health and fitness experts just might!

Be Specific With Smart Goals

Make every goal measurable and break your long-term goals into practical short-term goals. For example, let’s say that you have a goal to lose 20 pounds. That is a great goal, but what are you going to do to get there? Additionally, when June rolls around and you are only down two pounds, will you still try to achieve your weight loss goal? Break up the long-term goal of losing 20 pounds into short-term goals nah you have to hit every few weeks or so. Make a commitment to walk for 30 minutes a day and pack your lunch three days per week. Limit social drinking to one glass of wine each weekend and you’ll start to check off these short-term goals before you inevitably achieve your long-term one.

Don’t Shame The Spiral

What we mean by this is that failure is a part of life, and you may eventually lose steam or fall off the rails. You may cave one day and break down to eat an entire bag of chips while enjoying a large soda, followed by some late night ice cream. Well, don’t shame the spiral; rather, get back on the horse and try again. The worst thing you can do is give up, even if you hit a mild roadblock. Keep on keepin’ on and don’t let one slip-up mark the end of your journey. Pick up where you left off, stay focused, and you’ll reach your goal soon enough.

Be Consistent

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, health experts swear by the four C’s: confidence, concentration, composure, and commitment. When you are consistent, you get rewarded, which is why personal trainers stress that consistency is key if you want to see results. Consistency goes beyond your exercise program, though. To achieve your weight loss goals, for example, you need to retain motivation and remember that you’re not trying hard enough if things are easy.

Monitor Your Progress

The main reason to track your progress is to hold yourself accountable. If you want to lose 15 pounds within the first two months of the year, weigh yourself once per week in order to prevent a crash diet where you attempt to lose 10 pounds in a week. This goes beyond weight loss, too! If you want to clean out the garage and get rid of old belongings by the beginning of spring, slowly chip away at it week by week and monitor how far you’ve come, and how far you need to go to complete the task. Mark a calendar every time you complete a task that relates to your goal as a visual aid.

The two most common New Year’s resolutions are to stay fit and healthy, and to lose weight. These are excellent concepts, but they are immeasurable and ambiguous goals. In order to “lose weight” or “be healthier,” you need to have a plan in place, or at least have a clear objective (or objectives) to hit in the coming weeks or months. For example, maybe you want to run a 5k race in February or do 20 push-ups in a row within a month.

When you arrive at your deadline, you either did the work or you didn’t. Having a defined goal is a great place to start, but your success will depend on your determination and willingness to embrace change. You can have a plan, but you need to have multiple plans when you encounter roadblocks, because you cannot avoid them. Having plans to fall back on when you encounter these roadblocks can help you cross the finish line. Most importantly, achieving your goals leads to a conclusive outcome!

What can you do to ensure that you are part of the 8% of people that achieve their New Year’s resolutions? The following five tips aim to help you crush your health and wellness goals. Just remember to do the work and you will be rewarded with the results.

Determine Your “Why”

Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to eat healthy? Determining your “why” is the first step to finding success in most areas in life. It can make all the difference when it comes to setting your goals and following through on them. When you keep your “why” at the forefront of everything you do, you will be able to make better decisions. Your “why” keeps you passionate, motivated, and focused, while helping you align with your values. Write down your “why” for each goal you set and place it somewhere you will see daily. Come back to it so that you know why you are losing weight, avoiding alcohol, or not eating meat.

Focus On One Thing At A Time

When you set too many goals at once, you will likely abandon them as the result of a burnout. Instead, set a few goals in the beginning and check them off your list as you go. Once you reach the initial goals you set, you can add new ones to your list. A great exercise to complete before the New Year is to write down the things you want to accomplish, big or small. Prioritize and select a few from that list to start. As the year goes on, check off goals as they are completed and then prioritize new goals.

Schedule It And Commit To Yourself

Nobody likes a flaky person because plans always fall through. Don’t commit to things that you aren’t going to show up for, even if you want to say yes to everything and everyone. Commitment to yourself should be the same as your commitment to a good friend. Every Sunday night, plan out your week and schedule the things you need to do to ensure you stick to the goals you set. If that means penciling in your yoga class, grocery shopping, meal prepping, or personal training, so be it!

Let Failures Become Your Teachers

Life is the best rollercoaster there is! It comes with many ups, downs, and turn-em-arounds, and there are lessons around every corner. When you stay the course as things get challenging, you only become stronger. Accept that there will be some bumps in the road on the way to achieving your New Year’s resolutions. When you fail, don’t abandon ship. Instead, ask yourself what happened and learn from your experience to do better the next time.

Reward Yourself

When you accomplish any goal, no matter how big or small, your belief in your abilities grows. Make sure to celebrate your victories, but in a way that doesn’t revolve around food. When you celebrate with food, you endorse bad behavior. Consider seeing a movie, taking a bubble bath, or scheduling a massage to reward your progress. When you reward yourself, you not only increase your motivation, but you also remind your brain that you’re thriving!
