Let’s bust a myth straight out of the gate: You don’t need to be an athlete to feel the incredible itch of athlete’s foot. It’s a common fungal infection that causes itchy, scaly, burning, stinging, or occasionally cracked skin. A person experiences athlete’s foot when there is a large presence of dermatophytes on the skin. This type of fungi grows in warm, humid conditions, for example, sweaty socks.

Athlete’s foot, ringworm, and jock itch are three closely related fungal infections. More often than not, people treat them with anti-fungal medications, but it’s possible for infection to return. There are also natural remedies to help improve the condition, but some may not work for everyone. It’s time to consult a physician if the condition doesn’t improve within two weeks after beginning self-treatment with either natural remedies or an over-the-counter anti-fungal product. You may also want to consult your doctor if you have diabetes and suspect athlete’s foot. If the foot swells up and you notice redness then see your doctor as well.

Natural remedies and over-the-counter anti-fungal products can alleviate symptoms. Some of these products may help avoid a recurring rash, while others will not work at all. And then there are products that work, but personal habits get in the way of the healing process. If you have athlete’s foot and are on the healing path, avoid these common mistakes that can worsen the condition.

You Wear The Same Shoes Every Day

Everyone has a pair of shoes that they could wear every day, no matter what. One pair of shoes may be as comfortable as a fuzzy pair of house slippers, but those comfy kicks may prevent your athlete’s foot from healing properly. According to medical professionals, wearing the same shoes every day doesn’t allow the inside of the shoes to dry properly between wears. A moist, enclosed environment is not conducive to athlete’s foot, or any fungal condition. Keep the feet and the surfaces that the feet touch clean and dry. Alternate shoes every day, wash sneakers, insoles, and socks regularly, and choose breathable shoes if your feet are prone to sweating.

You Walk Barefoot In Shared Spaces

Some people brave the public spaces with no fear of catching any sort of disease, bacteria, or fungus. Walking barefoot in airplanes, gyms, public pools, locker rooms, or hotel rooms can result in athlete’s foot. Fungus that fosters athlete’s foot may linger on the floor in these areas, according to dermatologists. If you have a break in the skin, walking around barefoot in shared spaces leaves you more susceptible to an infection. A skin break or wound is an invitation for opportunistic pathogens. If you already suffer from athlete’s foot, walking barefoot with broken skin not only spreads the fungus to the floor, but can also lead to secondary bacterial infection. Always wear shoes or flip-flops in shared spaces.

You Moisturize Your Feet

People often mistake dry, cracked skin on the feet for athlete’s foot. It’s possible for athlete’s foot to look scaly on the bottoms of the feet, but it’s also possible to simply experience dry skin. One thing to remember is that fungus feeds off moist environments. If you have athlete’s foot, moisturizing will only worsen the condition and inhibit the healing process. The best thing you can do is ditch the lotion and consider an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream instead. If you can’t distinguish dry skin from athlete’s foot, consider seeing a podiatrist to properly assess the situation.

You Don’t Cut Toenails Often Enough

Believe it or not, this can slow the healing process if you suffer from athlete’s foot. Nailbeds can present the perfect environment for infection, especially if nails are too long. If you don’t cut your toenails, they can break and cause trauma to the nailbed. That can then lead to a deformed toenail, which has an increased risk of bacterial or fungal infection. Keep toenails short in order to prevent fungus from entering under the toenail or surrounding skin. Trim nails just above the white line using clippers.

The post The Many Health Benefits Of Tea Tree Oil appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Tea tree oil is one of the most popular essential oils in use. Also referred to as melaleuca oil, tea tree oil comes from the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree. It has the ability to kill numerous bacterial and fungal strains and has prominent use in historical, herbal healing practices. To this day, tea tree oil remains an alternative, complementary treatment for common skin problems.

There are many studies that indicate the diverse health benefits of tea tree oil. Many health experts attribute the healing properties to the inherent terpenoids, which exhibit anti-fungal and antiseptic activity. Terpinen-4-ol is abundant in tea tree oil and scientists believe it to be the primary reason for tea tree’s antibacterial properties. In the past, tea tree oil has helped people overcome symptoms of vaginal yeast infections, athlete’s foot, acne, mild nail infections, and even minor cuts and burns.

Note: Keep in mind that tea tree oil is a very powerful essential oil. Experts do not advise that people apply it directly to the skin. Please dilute it in a carrier oil (like olive oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil) before topical application. Direct application of 100% tea tree oil can result in burning, allergic reactions, or skin irritation.

Reduces Appearance Of Acne

According to many anecdotal reports and research studies, tea tree oil has the ability to reduce inflammation caused by acne. Roughly 50 million Americans suffer from acne at a given moment. One study monitored the effects of tea tree oil gel and a placebo for acne treatment. The results indicated that the tea tree oil group experienced a reduction in total acne and the severity of acne. The placebo experienced limited to no improvement.

Help For Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that occurs on the feet. It’s very contagious and can spread from the feet to the toenails to the hands. A controlled trial monitored the use of 25% tea tree oil solution, 50% tea tree oil solution, and a placebo in 158 people. After two daily applications for one month, the two tea tree oil solutions proved to be more effective than the placebo. In the group that used the 50% solution, about 64% of the participants were cured. 31% of people in the placebo group were also cured.

Reduces Dandruff

It’s common for many adults to experience dandruff. It can result from poor diet, excessive shampooing, or chemical hair care products. Mild dandruff that is related to the Pityrosporum ovale yeast may be remedied with a 5% tea tree oil solution. One study found that shampooing with a 5% tea tree shampoo for one month led to less itchiness and greasiness. Additionally, participants experienced improvements in the severity of dandruff. A different study found that tea tree oil shampoo may benefit children with cradle cap. The solution has to be diluted before used on an infant. Test on the baby’s arm and rinse to see if a reaction occurs within 24-48 hours.

Great For Toenail Infections

Be the cause nail abnormalities or a result of untreated athlete’s foot, nail fungal infections are quite common. They are also problematic because treating them is difficult. One randomized study examined the use of a solution with 5% tea tree oil and 2% butenafine hydrochloride in 60 people. After 16 weeks, 80% of the people who used the cream experienced significant improvement. Another study monitored the twice daily application of 100% pure tea tree oil versus 1% clotrimazole solution (common anti-fungal medication). After six months, the tea tree oil group proved to be more effective as an anti-fungal remedy.

For Cuts, Infections, And Scars

Historically, people used tea tree oil for wound healing. Experts attribute tea tree’s ability to accelerate healing to the antiseptic and antibacterial properties. The broad-spectrum antibacterial activity helps damage bacterial cell walls, helping to kill bacteria. One study in the British Medical Journal found that tea tree oil is a powerful disinfectant. Another study found that a combination of tea tree oil and raw honey helps reduce burns and scarring.

Bye Bye Itchy Skin

As mentioned earlier, tea tree oily can help reduce itchiness and dryness associated with dandruff. The anti-inflammatory properties offer soothing and relief from itchy areas of skin. Several studies found that tea tree oil has the ability to reduce inflamed, itchy skin. One study found that it reduced itchiness as a result of nickel sensitivity. The study used pure tea tree oil application, but it’s better to apply it with a carrier oil.

The post 5 Common Symptoms Of Omega-3 Deficiency appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

There are beneficial fats that improve cognitive function and heart health, and then there are fats that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The healthy fats that you need to concern yourself with are known as omega-3 fatty acids. They are commonly available in supplement form, and you’ve most likely seen them in the local pharmacy or grocery store. Omega-3s are also readily available in foods, and you can experience numerous health problems if you don’t get enough via your diet.

What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

There are two primary categories of polyunsaturated fatty acids: omega-3s and omega-6s. Both groups consist of long chains of carbon atoms with a carboxyl group at one end of the chain, and a methyl group at the other. In the case of omega-3s, there is a carbon double bond that is three carbons form the methyl end of the chain. Omega-3s are present in certain foods, including flaxseeds, chia seeds, avocados, walnuts, and certain fish like cod or salmon.

Scientists have concentrated studies on three types of omega-3s: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3s, with EPA containing 20 carbons and DHA containing 22 carbons. ALA contains 18 carbons. This is important because the human body can only form carbon-carbon double bonds after the ninth carbon. ALA and linoleic acid are both essential fatty acids, meaning you have to obtain them through your diet; the body cannot make them on its own.

Omega-3 Deficiency

Omega-3 deficiency has come to light in recent years. Researchers actually encourage doctors or medical professionals to look at a patient’s omega-3 intake when they complain about specific symptoms. Often times, symptoms of omega-3 deficiency can mimic those of iron or calcium deficiency, sliding under the radar of tests. Below, you’ll find five common symptoms of omega-3 deficiency.

Brittle Nails

Peeling nails, soft nails, or brittle nails are common signs that something is awry within the body. Brittle nails can be symptoms of other conditions, but they are commonly associated with omega-3 deficiency. Omega-3s help to build cell walls, and low levels make these walls weak. This leads to brittle or peeling nails, or other dryness on the scalp and skin.

Excessive Ear Wax

This is a strange symptom, but patients who complain about excessive ear wax commonly have low omega-3 levels. Increasing omega-3 intake may help alleviate this problem. When too much ear wax builds up in the ear canal, it can lead to irritation or hearing loss (in the worst cases). One study found that people who added sufficient omega-3s to their diet experienced a 14% reduction in hearing loss.

Joint Pain Or Stiffness

As you get older, it’s quite common to experience stiff joints or regular joint pain. Many associate this with osteoarthritis, which involves the break down of cartilage in joints. Some studies have found that supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce joint pain. Other studies show that polyunsaturated fatty acids may even help reduce the risk or pain of osteoarthritis, but more research is necessary.

Poor Concentration

Omega-3s are beneficial for heart health, but they also contribute to better cognitive function. Both EPA and DHA have important roles in infant brain development, but they also work to maintain regular brain function throughout life. They exist in cell membranes of brain cells, and an omega-3 deficiency can cause poor focus or concentration. Increasing your omega-3 intake can not only decrease the risk of cognitive decline, but it can also improve overall brain function and concentration.

Hair Changes

The omega-3s that exist in skin and nail cells also exist in hair follicles. Most people don’t know this because omega-3s aren’t typically discussed when it comes to hair health. According to several studies, adding more omega-3s to your diet can increase shine and thickness, creating luxurious locks of hair. Lastly, omega-3s can also help to reduce inflammation on the scalp, which can reduce your risk of hair loss.

The post 5 Tips To Keep Your Skin Healthy While Washing Hands So Often appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It seems as though “wash your hands,” “stay at home,” and “keep your distance” are the only things being said nowadays. Diligent hand washing is one of the most effective ways to keep germs away, but all this hand washing can take a toll on your skin. As if the dropping stocks, Safer At Home laws, and crazed toilet paper hoarders weren’t enough, now you have to worry about really dry hands.

Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that people should scrub hands with antibacterial soap and water for 20 seconds per wash. When soap and water are not available, people are encouraged to use hand sanitizers, but these aren’t as effective at getting rid of germs. The frequent use of hand sanitizers and nonstop hand washing can lead to dry or cracked skin. While hand washing is paramount for keeping yourself germ-free, you need to take proper measures to care for your skin.

Wash With Warm Water

According to many surgeons, who wash their hands upwards of 70 times a day, washing hands with lukewarm water is the best option. Dr. Daniela Kroshinsky, director of pediatric dermatology and inpatient dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, said that very hot water can dry things out, stripping your hands of natural oils. Keep your hands healthy by washing with lukewarm water and plenty of soap.

Blot Dry

The way you dry your hands is equally as important as the way you wash them. The best way is to blot your hands dry, as opposed to wiping them because that can cause micro-abrasions on the skin. Paper towels are best because they are single use and disposable. If you use towels at home, everyone in the home should get his or her own towel and the towels should be replaced with clean ones every three days.

Apply Moisturizer

When you don’t seal water into the skin after washing, the skin can become very dry. Creams, ointments, or moisturizers are better than lotions because lotions have high water content, meaning they don’t block water from escaping the skin. You want to use a product that helps the skin retain moisture. Moisturizers work to restore the barrier function of the epidermis, providing a protective film on the skin. If you need a few DIY all natural moisturizers, click here.

Use A Cuticle Oil

While you have to worry about moisturizing your hands, you need to pay equal attention to your cuticles. Cuticles can dry out easily with frequent hand washing, so you may want to keep cuticle oil on your desk, in your bag, in your car, or somewhere that is near your person so that you can apply it regularly. Click here to make an easy cuticle oil.

Moisturize Before Bed

Apply your moisturizer or carrier oil to your hands before bed so that they can heal overnight. If you don’t want to use a moisturizer, you can use jojoba oil with a few drops of tea tree oil to encourage healthier skin. Before you climb into bed, let the moisturizer or oil soak into your skin, so you don’t immediately wipe it off onto your sheets.
