Summer is a time for fun in the sun, and that calls for a thorough application of sunscreen. Sure, you may lather your legs, arms and face, but chances are you skip over some important areas, according to dermatologists. In fact, most adults require one ounce (a full shot glass) of sunscreen to cover exposed skin on the entire body. That said, most people only use 25 to 50% of that amount.

Dermatologists suggest wearing sunscreen on a daily basis, regardless of the weather. If you go swimming or sweat while wearing sunscreen, make sure to reapply after drying off. The reason that you should wear sunscreen on a daily basis is to reduce the risk of wrinkles, sun spots, and the overall appearance of the skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that if you experience five or more sunburns, your risk of melanoma doubles. Melanoma is potentially a deadly form of skin cancer, which is why dermatologists encourage regular sunscreen application. In fact, wearing sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher reduces your risk of skin cancer by 50%.

Now, as mentioned earlier, you need to apply sunscreen to all areas that are exposed to the sun. Most people neglect the following areas when applying sunscreen. Make sure to get them to reduce your risk of skin cancer and advanced signs of aging.

The Scalp

If you think that your hair protects your scalp, think again. The scalp is the highest point of the body and can burn more easily than other areas. That’s usually why your head feels itchy or hot the following day after being in the sun. To help prevent skin cancer, always apply sunscreen to your scalp and hairline. Although skin cancer on the scalp only accounts for 2-5% of all melanomas, you should still apply sunscreen as a protective measure. There are many sunscreens specifically formulated to protect the scalp without leaving behind a greasy residue.

The Eyelids

The skin around your eyes is very thin, which makes it more susceptible to skin cancer, in addition to wrinkles and sun spots. According to available data, skin cancer on the eyelids accounts for 10% of all skin cancer cases. Many people don’t apply sunscreen around the eyes because of sensitivity issues. In order to avoid the sting, choose a mineral sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. You can also use an eye cream that contains SPF if you don’t want to use sunscreen. Lastly, don’t forget to wear sunglasses, preferably ones that have polarized lenses.

The Ears

All the folds in the ears make them a little difficult to cover in sunscreen, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid them. Your ears get plenty of sun exposure, especially if you don’t wear a protective sun hat. Skin cancer can affect all areas of the ears, not just the tops and ear lobes. Make sure to apply sunscreen behind the ears as well because those are common areas for skin cancer development. Make sure that the sunscreen you apply is a broad-spectrum variety with an SPF of 30 or higher.

The Feet

Obviously, you do not need to apply sunscreen to the soles of your feet. The reason for this is because a thick layer of dead skin cells offers protection. If, for whatever reason, you expose the soles of your feet to the sun, make sure to apply some sunscreen. The tops of your feet are exposed to the sun if you are not wearing full-coverage shoes. About 3-15% of melanoma skin cancer cases occur on the foot or ankle. Always self-examine your feet on a regular basis to ensure that you don’t have any irregular spots or moles.

The Lips

As you probably know, the skin on the lips is very sensitive, which is why they are prone to dryness and chapping in the winter. Fortunately, it is easy to protect because you just need a lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association. Applying a lip balm with an SPF is a great step towards preventing the development of skin cancers and wrinkles on the lips.

As spring transitions to summer, people look forward to more days in the sun. From days at the beach to hiking to waterfalls, the warmer weather attracts outdoor activities. All this time in the sun can take a toll on your skin, typically resulting in sunburn if you don’t take precaution. One of the easiest ways to protect the skin from sunburn, blisters, and even skin cancer, is to apply sunscreen before your time in the sun.

According to a 2018 study, regular sunscreen use in young adults reduces the risk of melanoma. A separate long-term study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, suggests that regular sunscreen use prevented melanoma in adults. Both of these studies endorse the regular use of sunscreen, but not all sunscreens are created equal. Some sunscreens contain harmful chemicals that negatively affect coral reefs and your skin, while others have healthier, protective ingredients.

Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreens

Chemical and mineral sunscreens protect your skin from the sun, but in different ways. Mineral sunscreen ingredients contain small particles that sit on the skin’s surface, preventing UV rays from penetrating the skin. When you apply a mineral sunscreen, you may notice a white residue that doesn’t smooth into the skin like regular, chemical-rich sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens allow UV light into the skin. Once the skin absorbs the light, the chemicals in the sunscreen create a chemical reaction, converting UV light into heat. It then dissipates from the skin, according to dermatologists.

One of the primary cons of chemical sunscreens is that they cause allergic reactions in people with sensitive skin. Additionally, chemical sunscreens may worsen melasma and rosacea, which results in red patches and pimples on the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Melasma results in brown patches of skin on the forearms, face, and neck.

Use Mineral Sunscreen

Ideal for children or people with sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen contains either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These are the only two ingredients that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes as safe and effective. Mineral sunscreens are much safer for people who have concerns about long-term exposure to harmful ingredients in regular sunscreens. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which have a 15-30 minute absorption period for maximum protection, mineral sunscreens offer immediate protection. The only thing to keep in mind about mineral sunscreens is that they sit on top of the skin in a thick layer. If you have acne-prone or combination skin and use mineral sunscreen, you may experience breakouts. You can always add anti-acne additives to the mineral sunscreen you make to reduce this risk. Otherwise, enjoy the recipe below and protect your skin this summer

All Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup cocoa butter
  • 1/2 cup avocado oil
  • 1/4 cup beeswax pellets
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup non-nano zinc oxide
  • 15 drops essential oils of your choice (optional)

Instructions:

  • Melt the cocoa butter, avocado oil, beeswax pellets, and coconut oil in a double boiler over medium-low heat. If you do not have a double boiler, place a heat-safe bowl with the ingredient in it over a pot of water and bring it to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium-low.
  • Once the ingredient are completely melted, remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  • Stir in the non-nano zinc oxide and the essential oils, if you are using them. Whisk well and then transfer the sunscreen to a wide-mouthed mason jar, or other glass jar.
  • If you want to use this at the beach, omit the essential oils and store the sunscreen in a plastic container.

Nobody wants to walk by a mirror and see a flaky face that looks as dry as the arid Utah salt flats. Sadly, dry skin is par for the course during the colder fall and winter months. So what can you do to provide your skin with the moisture it needs during these times? Some people resort to special oils and high-end skin care products, but it’s much easier to use simple ingredients that nourish the skin.

That’s why we’re in love with the DIY frankincense whipped face cream in this article. There are several steps involved, but the ingredient list isn’t out of this world. You don’t need to seek out rare clay from the hinterlands of Nepal or saffron from the mountains of Brazil. Get your hands on some quality ingredients and your skin will love you forever. In fact, you’ll probably love yourself even more when you look at hydrated skin that looks like it could be in a beauty commercial. Let’s take a look at some of the standout ingredients in this cream.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang ylang has antiseptic, antispasmodic, sedative, and antidepressant properties, and it’s a popular oil in aromatherapy. The oil is extracted from the flower of the ylang ylang tree, which is popularly grown throughout Asia. When you apply the essential oil on the skin, it helps to slow the signs of aging and combat skin irritations. A few preliminary studies found that the terpenoids in ylang ylang may be viable treatment options for numerous skin disorders. Several tests on cancerous melanoma skin cells found that the terpenoid compounds inhibited growth. In a nutshell, the antioxidants in ylang ylang essential oil help protect skin cells from damage

Aloe Vera Gel

According to dermatologists, the gel from the aloe vera succulent has healing and medicinal properties. The inherent antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins have been known to benefit skin conditions like psoriasis, cold sores, and even burns and frostbite. When it comes to dry skin, aloe vera should be one of your go-to ingredients. The high water content (aloe vera is 98% water) helps to hydrate, moisturize, and soothe dry skin. Additionally, the skin easily absorbs aloe vera gel, helping to accelerate the production and release of collagen.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Distilled from the resin of the frankincense tree, frankincense essential oil has a woody aroma that has a hint of spice. Aromatherapists typically incorporate it into calming blends because it has sedative properties that combat stress. When used topically, frankincense helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration. The astringent properties aid these processes and the nutritional content promotes the growth of new skin cells. Frankincense also works to disinfect and tighten pores, which helps to reduce inflamed skin

DIY Frankincense Whipped Face Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 3/4 ounce beeswax pastilles
  • 1 cup aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 10 drops ylang ylang essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil, jojoba oil, and beeswax pastilles to the top of a double boiler. Fill the bottom part with a couple inches of water and place over low heat.
  • Gently stir the oil mixture until it is combined and sufficiently melted.
  • Pour this mixture into a food processor and allow it to cool and harden.
  • Once it has hardened, break up the mixture with a fork and mix in about one tablespoon of aloe vera gel.
  • Blend the mixture for 30 seconds and then add the rest of the aloe vera gel to the food processor through the top while blending. It will take a couple minutes to thoroughly combine.
  • Once the mixture looks like a thick, fluffy lotion, drop in the essential oils and mix for another 30 seconds.
  • Store the mixture in an airtight glass jar in a cool dry place. You can apply this cream on any area of the skin that needs moisture. It’s best to use it after washing your face and patting it dry.

Everybody needs sun exposure to absorb vitamin D, but nobody has time for the lobster life. We understand that you may not want to lather up in sunscreen all day, and we don’t blame you because many varieties contain chemicals and harm coral reefs, but you also don’t want awkward tan lines, peeling skin, or sun blisters.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), a sunburn has more long-term damage than you may realize. It’s not a color that will inevitably fade; rather, a damaging sunburn that results in blisters during childhood or adolescence can double the chances of developing melanoma. Additionally, repeated exposure to ultraviolet light, without taking proper skin protecting measures, increases the risk of premature aging and skin cancer.

The good news is that a lot of home remedies can accelerate the healing process and reduce the sting or discomfort of sunburns. Some of the best natural remedies that will save your skin after too much time in the sun are listed below.

Baking Soda Bath

Baking soda has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce the itchiness and redness of sunburns. Take a half-cup of baking soda and stir it into a lukewarm bath and soak in the bath for about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can draw a bath and stir 2-4 cups of finely ground oats, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1 cup of evaporated milk, all of which help to fight inflammation.

Apply Aloe Vera

First off, get some fresh aloe vera and avoid using the bottled aloe vera gel, which often contains alcohol and can dry out the skin. You want maximum hydration after a sunburn, so it is recommended to apply the fresh aloe plant directly on the skin. Aloe provides soothing and cooling properties, making it great for sunburnt skin.

Use Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a common ingredient in DIY skin care and hair care recipes, but it can be beneficial for soothing sunburns. The reason for this is because it contains tannins, which work to repair damaged skin and decrease swelling. If too much fun in the sun left you looking like a lobster, witch hazel is a great solution. Pour about three tablespoons of witch hazel into a bowl, dip a cotton ball in it, and gently dab the cotton ball on sunburnt skin.

Make Sure To Hydrate

It is common for sunburnt victims to experience dehydration because the sunburn draws fluid away from the rest of the body and to the skin. Replenish your fluids by consuming lots of water, not soda, not caffeine, and definitely not alcohol. The reason you should avoid alcohol after a sunburn is because it can slow the healing process by dehydrating the body even more.

Mist With Frankincense Oil

Essential oils like peppermint and tea tree work wonders for the skin, and they often overshadow the skin-regenerating properties of frankincense essential oil. Frankincense can help to reduce the pain of a sunburn and can accelerate the healing process. To make a sunburn relief spray, add 8-15 drops of frankincense essential oil to a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with filtered water. Mist the affected area to promote healing.

Mist With Lavender Oil

Once upon a time in early 20th century France, a chemist discovered the healing properties of lavender. He wasn’t the first person to realize these properties; rather, he accidentally dunked his hand into a large bowl of lavender oil after severely burning his hand. To his surprise, the burn healed quickly! Lavender essential oil can have the same healing effects on sunburnt skin. Mix one teaspoon of lavender and two ounces of filtered water in a spray bottle. Shake this up and mist onto the sunburn as needed.

Try White Vinegar

Acetic acid, which works to relieve pain, is a component of aspirin, but you don’t need to take aspirin when you have distilled white vinegar. Don’t drink the stuff; rather, soak some paper towels in the vinegar and gently pat sunburnt skin to help reduce itching and inflammation. If the face is burnt, avoid the eye area because vinegar in the eyes is worse than the pain of your sunburn. You can also pour one cup of distilled white vinegar in a tepid bath and soak for 20 minutes.

May has been designated as National Melanoma Month. Melanoma Monday (May 1st this year), as it has become known, aims to raise awareness about melanoma. Since melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer, it is important that people know the warning signs. While there are many types of skin cancer, melanoma accounts for 75% of all skin cancer deaths.

Knowing the warning signs and symptoms of melanoma is beneficial, especially since the condition is increasing in people under age 40. It is always optimal to attack the problem before it worsens or spreads, so it is best to continually examine moles or skin spots that you may have on your body. This is why you should know the ABCDEs of the condition.

A is for Asymmetry

If you imagine a line that divides your mole in half, are both sides equal? If they are not, then the mole is considered asymmetrical and you should seek medical advice.

B is for Border

If the border or edge of the mole looks uneven then you may want to consult a medical professional.

C is for Color

Moles tend to be one uniform color. If there are several colors or shades in a mole, this could be an indication of melanoma.

D is for Diameter

Diameter is the length of the entire mole. Melanomas typically have a diameter of 1/4inch (6mm), so keep an eye on the size of your mole(s) to detect melanoma early.

E is for Evolving

It is best you keep track of your mole(s) to make sure that the size, shape, and color are the same. If there is any difference, such as itching, bleeding, or puss from the mole, then it could indicate that the mole is malignant.

There are natural remedies that can help those who have melanoma. The following remedies may help to improve the condition, but it depends on the severity and the person.

Remove Toxins From Your Diet

It is imperative to your health, if you have melanoma or any type of cancer, to remove any sort of toxic foods from your diet. It is beneficial to avoid processed foods, acidic foods, soy products, refined sugars, meats, meat products, hydrogenated oils, fast food, and junk food. Try to focus on eating plant-based foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains. These foods can help supply the body with the essential nutrients that it needs, and they also help to keep the body alkaline. Having an alkaline body with balanced pH levels can help to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Use Eggplan

You may not know this, but eggplant is surprisingly beneficial for treating the affected cells in melanoma. There are phytonutrients, glycosides, and glycoalkaloids in eggplants that can help destroy cancer cells without harming the other cells in the body. Mash eggplant into a paste and apply it to the affected spots. You can enhance the healing properties by mixing in a little raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the eggplant.

Essiac Tea

It is beneficial for those with melanoma to consume essiac tea. This tea is a mixture of the following herbs: burdock root, slippery elm bark, sheep sorrel, and Indian rhubarb root. Together, all of these herbs can aid in reducing tumor growth, help relieve pain, and they help to boost the immune system. The best thing about this tea is that it helps to reduce inflammation while also repairing cells.

Turmeric

Turmeric has been known to be a natural cancer remedy. Studies have indicated that curcumin, the active healing ingredient in turmeric, can help prevent cancer cell growth. Turmeric has been most effective for people with colon, breast, bowel, and skin cancers.

There’s a berry that kills cancer cells in minutes? Yes, there is! We were skeptical at first too, but scientific research and videos about the special cure have been surfacing all over the Internet. In the rainforests of Far North Queensland, Australia, blushwood berries are abundant. Although that may sound like a beginning chapter to a Lord of the Rings-type book, these blushwood berries contain an amazing cancer-killing compound in the seeds.

Medical research on blushwood berries began eight years ago and the results are astonishing. Scientists have been extracting the compound from the berries and testing it on dogs, cats, and horses with skin cancer. 75% of cases had success combating the skin cancer, and there were very little recurring signs in that 75 percentile.

So how does a simple berry fight cancer? The compound in the seed is believed to cut off oxygen supply to the tumor. This allows for the removal of tumors without the need for surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. When injected into the tumor, scientists noticed that tumors began to die and shrink within two days. The compound began killing cancer cells within minutes, when examined under a microscope.

The only thing is that the compound must be directly injected into the tumor for it to be effective. This is why it has been most effective in treating skin cancer, head & neck cancer, or cases of melanoma. Scientists don’t believe that it is powerful enough to kill metastatic cancers as of yet.

Natural remedies can be extremely beneficial; we are well aware of that. Why is it that we are only hearing about this berry now? This berry’s benefits have been known for about eight years. Eight years, people! Treatments, which can effectively cure a major disease such as cancer, have to be kept under the radar because mainstream medication and treatment is a multi-billion dollar industry. How would it fair if you could get a berry injection for $100 and be cured? Think about that for a second.

Scientists believe that the treatment is ready for humans, especially since several participants have shown success in preliminary trials. This is why it is always best to explore natural remedies before immediately poisoning your body with toxic medication.

A mole is a skin lesion that is usually benign (non-cancerous) in nature. Moles are part of a group of skin lesions that include freckles, benign lentigines, seborrheic keratosis, and skin tags.

Moles are generally black or brown in color. They occur early in life and sometimes can slowly change over time. Moles are usually not something to worry about unless severe change occurs. If this happens, you should seek advice as to whether the mole had changed into something more serious.

Moles have the potential to turn into malignant melanoma, a serious form of cancer. Most moles remain benign, but if you are concerned about a mole you have, look for the ABCDE’s of melanoma:

  • A for asymmetry: If the mole looks different on one half versus the other half
  • B for irregular border: Poorly defined or irregular border
  • C for color: Multiple colors such as black, brown, blue, red, or white occur together in the same mole
  • D for diameter: If a mole is larger around than a standard pencil eraser
  • E for evolving: A mole that changes size, shape, or color

Also, keep a look out for new moles that appear or any moles that bother you. If a mole bleeds, is painful, or itches you should look into possible causes.

Moles are commonly found on the face and neck, but may occur on any area of the body. They can be found alone or in larger patches of moles.

Cause of Moles

Moles occur when skin cells called melanocytes grow in a cluster instead of being spread evenly throughout the skin. Melanocytes also give moles their pigment. Sun exposure can darken the pigment over time.

Many people are born with moles and others simply develop them during some time of their life. Moles on the body at birth are called or referred to as ‘congenital nevi.’ Moles that are hereditary in nature are called “dysplastic nevi” that are larger than average and irregular in shape.

There is a school of thought that believes moles signify past- life experiences. It is thought that were the mole occurs on the body is where a past- life trauma occurred.

Natural Solutions for Moles

Since most moles pose no threat, it is not necessary to remove them. If a mole bothers you try some of these at home remedies that may help in alleviating the condition:

  • Fresh pineapple juice
  • Garlic
  • Fig stems
  • Grapefruit juice

Applying these natural remedies to the affected area on a regular basis could help to lessen the appearance of the mole.

Dherbs Solutions

Dherbs carries several products that could help cleanse your body and lessen the severity of your mole. Some products to try include:
