The days are here, friends! You know what days we are talking about, the ones where you sit by the pool, throw a football on the beach, go on the lake, or, quite literally, you soak up the summer sun. There is nothing quite like a lazy summer day in the sun, but you’ll suffer the consequences if you don’t properly care for your skin.

In your younger years, you probably weren’t as vigilant about sun protection. Once you pass a certain threshold, you understand the importance of skin care, especially if you are going to be in the sun. You also understand that you have to properly care for the skin after sun exposure. You won’t always return home from a day in the sun with a sunburn. You can, however, decrease your risk of sunburn by taking precautions, such as applying sunscreen and finding shade when possible. When you feel like your skin is a little hotter than usual after sun exposure, apply the after sun lotion in this article.

Green Tea

This after sun lotion contains green tea, which may seem like an unusual ingredient for such a DIY skin care product. Green tea works to reduce inflammation and provides lots of antioxidants and polyphenols that fight sun damage and free radicals. Even if you do not get burnt, these antioxidants can help fight the free radicals that develop from sun exposure. Green tea also works to fight the signs of aging and promotes rejuvenation, which is necessary after sun exposure.

Aloe Vera Gel

When you think of after sun care, your mind probably goes straight to aloe vera gel. It soothes the skin and helps accelerate recovery from a sunburn. If you put it in the fridge and then apply it to your warm, sunburnt skin, it is a revelation. Most people have used the sap from the aloe plant to soothe skin for centuries. It has an instant cooling effect and works to fight inflammation. Studies have shown that aloe vera also increases cell turnover and promotes new cell growth. Mostly composed of water, aloe vera works to moisturize and nourish the body, enhancing the skin barrier and preventing moisture loss after application.

Essential Oils

Similar to aloe vera, some essential oils, such as peppermint essential oil, provide an instant cooling effect when topically applied to the skin. Peppermint essential oil helps to draw heat out of the body, which is necessary if you have a sunburn. Finally, the lavender essential oil in this after sun lotion has a soothing scent that helps to calm the mind and body. It also works to clean the skin’s surface, reduce inflammation, and lessen pain.

After Sun Lotion

Ingredients:

 • 2/3 cup coconut oil
 • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
 • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder
 • 1/3 cup pure aloe vera gel
 • 25 drops vitamin E oil
 • 25 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 20 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

 • Add the coconut oil and beeswax pellets to a small saucepan over medium low heat. Stir frequently until fully melted and clear.
 • Add the matcha powder and stir to combine. Allow the matcha to steep in the oil and beeswax mixture for one hour over very low heat.
 • Pour the matcha-infused oil mixture through a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve into a heat-safe bowl.
 • Add the remaining ingredients to the same bowl and whisk all of the ingredients together by hand or with an electric mixer.
 • Once you have thoroughly whisked the ingredients, pour the mixture into a glass jar and allow it to cool at room temperature. This will take some time.
 • When the mixture is cool, you can use it immediately. If you want to go the extra mile to have a fluffy consistency, you can pour the mixture back into a bowl and whisk with an electric mixture.
 • Store the after sun lotion in a glass jar in the fridge to keep it as fresh as possible. This will also enhance the cooling effects of some of the ingredients in the after sun lotion.

Are you ready to indulge in a creamy, green tea-infused homemade matcha ice cream? Made with creamy, ripe bananas, matcha, and coconut milk, this vegan ice cream will level up your dessert game. The bananas offer natural sweetness and the touch of coconut milk contributes to a luxuriously creamy texture. It tastes a lot richer than it is, so much so that you may not even believe this decadent treat to be dairy-free.

After enjoying the first couple bites, you may feel as though you are at peace in a tranquil Japanese garden. The subtle bitterness of matcha powder is perfectly balanced by the natural sugars in the bananas. Just make sure that the bananas are relatively ripe. You don’t want green bananas giving your ice cream a bitter taste. The coconut milk adds a luxurious, creamy element, reminiscent of the tropics.

One thing that we want you to do is savor each bite. Notice how the flavors blend together harmoniously. The matcha exhibits bright, grassy notes that mingle with the subtle sweetness of the bananas, while the coconut milk provides a silky smoothness. The result is a unique and addictive dessert that may become a new favorite obsession.

The post 6 Foods That Can Help Reduce Stress Levels appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

It is impossible to avoid all stressors as you go through life, but it is possible to minimize them. Stress, at times, can heighten your senses and better equip you for the situation at hand. Chronic stress, however, can negatively impact your mental and physical health in several ways, such as increasing your risk of anxiety, depression, and even heart disease.

Believe it or not, the foods you eat have a powerful influence on your mental health. According to many studies, prioritizing foods with certain nutrients can help improve your mood and may even reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. If you regularly battle with feelings of stress and need help regulating levels, focus on the following nutritious and stress-reducing foods

Berries

Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, berries should be a mainstay in everyone’s diet. They contain essential vitamins and minerals, some of which are involved with mood regulation, stress response, and cognitive function. One study from 2022 monitored the mental health of participants in relation to their fruit intake. Compared to those with the lowest fruit intake, the participants with the highest fruit intake had 16%, 25%, and 27% lower odds for lack of joy, worries, and tension, respectively. Diets rich in berries have also been linked to higher levels of optimism

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables are loaded with stress-reducing plant compounds, including carotenoids, magnesium, and vitamin C. Great examples of these vegetables include Swiss chard, spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, arugula, romaine lettuce, and Brussels sprouts. Many dark, leafy greens contain magnesium, which plays an integral role in the body’s stress response. Insufficient amounts of magnesium in the body can impact your ability to deal with stress. Stress can actually increase magnesium loss via urine, which increases the risk of magnesium deficiency. Eating more magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, can increase magnesium levels and may help reduce stress

Avocados

Speaking of magnesium, avocados are also great sources. They also contain a lot of fiber, which works to decrease inflammation in the body, which may help lower stress levels. According to research, people under high stress have exhibited higher levels of inflammatory markers. Eating more fiber-rich foods may help reduce inflammation in the body, which may alleviate stress. A 2021 study of over 3,000 people found that eating more fiber reduced the risk of psychological distress and anxiety. A seven-ounce avocado contains 13.5 grams of fiber, which fulfills 48% of the recommended daily intake (RDI).

Matcha

Matcha lattes have surged to popularity within recent years, but let’s just leave the milk out of the equation for a moment. This powdered green tea contains a lot of mood-boosting and stress-regulating properties. Researchers note that the L-theanine in matcha has anti-anxiety and stress-reducing effects. L-theanine is an amino acid that acts on the central nervous system, influencing receptors in the brain to help reduce stress and anxiety symptoms. For example, L-theanine works to reduce the release of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, which increases the release of GABA. A 2019 study found that participants who consumed cookies containing 4.5 grams of matcha per day for 15 days had significant reductions in the activity of certain stress markers.

Apples, Pears, And Citrus Fruits

Not every fruit helps to regulate stress levels, but a 2022 study found that increasing intake of bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits, apples, and pears contributed to lower stress levels. In fact, each of those fruits lowered the risk of having high perceived stress. Researchers suggest that the high concentration of minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals found in those fruits contribute to the stress-reducing properties. More research is necessary on this matter.

Hemp Seeds

Similar to avocados and leafy greens, hemp seeds are rich in magnesium, with a three-tablespoon serving covering 50% of the RDI of magnesium. Hemp seeds also provide omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, another nutrient involved in stress response. Low zinc levels can affect your mood and have been linked to anxiety symptoms. Zinc may reduce anxiety and stress by acting on GABA and glutamate, among other neurotransmitters. Low levels of GABA and glutamate may result from low zinc levels, all of which worsen anxiety. A 2023 review of nine studies found that people with anxiety exhibited lower levels of zinc in their blood compared to people without anxiety.

]]>

If you want your skin to glow, you have to treat it right. The matcha clay face mask in this article is a simple, all-natural mask that works to detoxify the skin. Not only does that help remove impurities from your pores, but it also helps the skin look more radiant. Can you go wrong with nourishing ingredients like matcha, French green claw, kaolin clay, honey powder, aloe vera powder, and more?

This face mask helps to absorb excess oil and deep clean the skin. Matcha, spirulina, and goat milk powder help to calm and revive the skin with nourishing vitamins and minerals. Other ingredients help trap moisture into the skin and give it an immediate glow. Whether you have acne prone skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, or dry skin, this mask is highly suitable. Continue reading to learn about some of the standout ingredients.

Aloe Vera Gel Powder

Aloe vera gel is a natural humectant, which attracts moisture from the air and supplies it to your skin. By deeply moisturizing the skin, you strengthen your skin’s elasticity, helping it appear smoother and more supple. If you notice that facial skin feels dry, this is an ingredient your skin requires.

Spirulina Powder

Spirulina is a notable superfood that provides the body with protein, thiamin, copper, niacin, iron, and more. It is also a great source of antioxidants, which help contribute to a fresh, clear complexion. Spirulina helps nourish the skin, promoting cell growth and regeneration with its amino acid content.

Matcha Powder

Made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, matcha exhibits impressive antioxidant activity. The leaves dry naturally, so no heating is involved, which better preserves their nutrients. Matcha also offers antibacterial and antibiotic properties, which help rejuvenate skin cells, promote smooth skin, and reduce fine lines.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin clay has a fine texture, so it is very gentle on the skin. It is less absorbing than French green clay, which we will discuss next. If your skin is dry or sensitive, double the amount of kaolin clay and omit the French green clay from this recipe.

French Green Clay

Rich in trace minerals, French green clay works to nourish the skin, clear impurities, and absorb excess oils. Studies show that this clay benefits people with acne because it helps to remove blackheads and germs in pores. It also tightens pores and promotes overall skin rejuvenation. The green color is attributed to the centuries-old plant matter, from which French green clay is made. It also contains iron oxide, which helps draw out toxins from the skin.

Honey Powder

Honey exhibits antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help soothe inflammation. The antioxidants in honey support cell regeneration and strengthen the skin. Just like aloe vera, honey is a natural humectant, so it helps trap moisture into the skin and add shine to your complexion.

DIY Matcha Clay Face Mask

Ingredients:

 • 1.4 ounces French green clay
 • 1.4 ounces kaolin clay
 • 0.7 ounces goat milk powder
 • 0.35 ounces matcha powder
 • 0.35 ounces honey powder
 • 0.17 ounces spirulina powder
 • 0.04 ounces aloe vera gel powder
 • 0.02 ounces allantoin

Instructions:

 • First of all, a digital scale to make your life easier. Weigh out the different powders and place them all in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
 • After mixing the powders thoroughly, Pour the mixture into an airtight container and store in a cool, dark place. You don’t want this to be exposed to sunlight or a heat source.
 • When ready to use, put two teaspoons of the powder into a small mixing bowl and stir in one teaspoon of water. Continue stirring until you achieve a smooth paste.
 • Using a brush or spatula, apply the mask to your face, making sure to avoid the lips, hairline, eyes, and eyebrows.
 • Rinse with warm water and a washcloth after 10 minutes. You can then apply a toner and moisturizer.

Spring is a lovely time of the year. The weather warms up, the days get longer, and flowers bloom, giving off beautiful aromas. It’s also a time when we transition out of the dry winter weather, and the skin gets to appreciate higher humidity levels. At the very least, there is no more frigid outdoor weather followed by intense dry indoor heat, a combination that increases dryness.

If you continue to deal with dry skin and need something to enhance moisture, the body butter in this article is just right for you. It contains shea butter, coconut oil, beeswax, vitamin E oil, matcha powder, and peppermint essential oil. All of these ingredients benefit the skin, but some are better than others at helping the skin retain moisture for long periods of time. Should your skin need a little love, lather up with this body butter and enjoy the beauty benefits of natural ingredients.

Beeswax

Many beauty products that contain beeswax are EWG-certified, meaning the product goes through the Environmental Working Group’s verification process. If you don’t see that certificate on a product with beeswax, avoid it. Beeswax acts as both an emollient and a humectant. It works to draw moisture to the skin and help seal it in, filling in micro cracks to prevent moisture loss. Thanks to its antibacterial agents, beeswax has a long history of use for burn and wound treatment. One study found that beeswax products were far superior than synthetic products at managing sensitive skin conditions.

Matcha

Yes, this is the same matcha that you see in lattes and ice cream, only without the dairy in the case of this body butter recipe. Matcha contains methylxanthines, which work to stimulate microcirculation in the skin. Not only does this process promote more radiant skin, but it also contributes to an even complexion. Additionally, matcha contains EGCG, a potent antioxidant that is highly effective against free radicals. It works to neutralize oxidative stress that can accelerate cellular aging, which promotes wrinkles. Matcha also exhibits polyphenols that may protect skin from UV damage, according to some research studies. The polyphenols protect against environmental pollution as well.

Coconut Oil

Derived from coconuts, coconut oil exhibits powerful antimicrobial properties that help kill bacteria on the skin. Researchers attribute most of coconut oil’s abilities to lauric acid, which may reduce inflammation and exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells. One study found that coconut oil was able to suppress inflammatory markers and enhance the skin barrier function. Due to the medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil helps the skin retain moisture without making it appear oily. Lastly, coconut oil is effective at reducing levels of trans epidermal water loss and increasing skin surface lipid levels.

Peppermint Matcha Body Butter

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup shea butter
 • 1/4 cup coconut oil
 • 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
 • 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
 • 1 tablespoon matcha powder
 • 8-10 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

 • Melt the shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax in a pan over medium-low heat. Stir frequently to ensure that they combine evenly.
 • Once all of the ingredients melt, remove the pan from the heat and pour the mixture into a metal bowl of a food mixer. If you don’t have a food mixer, pour the mixture into heat-safe glass or metal bowl.
 • Place in the fridge for 10 minutes, or until the top begins to gel over. You don’t want the mixture to be completely solid, though.
 • Remove from the fridge and add the vitamin E oil. Use your food mixer to whisk on high for about five minutes. Alternatively, use an electric hand mixer to whip for the same amount of time.
 • Stop blending and add the matcha powder and peppermint essential oil.
 • Continue mixing until the mixture is green. You can add more matcha if necessary.
 • Scoop the body butter into four-ounce glass jars and screw the lids on tight. Keep for yourself or gift them to others, and use as needed.

The post 6 Things You May Not Know About Matcha appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Matcha is everywhere these days. It has gained an almost cult-like following, winning over coffee enthusiasts with the popular incarnation that is the matcha latte. Although people in the West may be newly interested in its distinctive flavor and vibrant color, it has a deep cultural tradition and exhibits many health benefits.

What Is Matcha?

This special form of green tea directly translates to “fine green powder.” Unlike traditional tea preparation where you only drink the liquid after steeping the tea bag, matcha preparation involves whisking whole ground tea leaves into hot water. By consuming the leaves in liquid form, you actually absorb more antioxidants and nutrients than you would drinking a regular cup of green tea. Growers and tea farmers shade the young leaves of the first harvest for about three to four weeks before picking them. This practice contributes to the inherent sweetness during the brewing process. Post harvest, the dried leaves are ground into a fine powder.

Steeped In Tradition

Matcha is often the centerpiece of a Japanese tea ceremony. Traditionally, people prepare matcha by pouring the powder into hot water and whisking it with a bamboo whisk. Drinking it from the tea bowl allows you to simultaneously sip the tea while inhaling the aroma. Because it is not soluble, matcha powder suspends in water; therefore, people should consume it immediately after preparation.

Traditionally Involved In Meditation

Traditionally, Zen Buddhist monks consume matcha prior to meditation, as it is a calming stimulant. One cup of matcha has one-third of the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. Instead of giving people the jitters, it creates a sensation of mental alertness and deep relaxation. Because of this, some people refer to matcha as “liquid meditation,” working to help people concentrate during long meditation sessions. In the West, however, it’s more of a trend and not consumed for meditation purposes.

Some Powders Are Better Than Others

Matcha has a strong, mildly bitter taste that some people may equate to an umami flavor profile. For this reason, some manufacturers sweeten powders to improve palatability. Instead of traditional matcha powder, it becomes a matcha mix, where the first ingredient may be “sugar.” It’s possible for some powders to contain powdered milk as well, making it like a hot chocolate packet. These processed, sugary powders eliminate all of matcha’s health benefits. The easiest comparison is that traditional matcha is like raw cacao powder and processed powders are like sugary cocoa powder. Both varieties come from the same plant, but the health benefits get lost during all of the processing.

Matcha Keeps You More Alert Than Coffee

As stated earlier, matcha does not contain as much caffeine as coffee. The average cup of matcha contains 70 milligrams of caffeine, whereas an average cup of coffee contains 120-150 milligrams of caffeine. The alertness doesn’t come from caffeine; rather, it’s because of L-theanine, which is an amino acid that raises dopamine and serotonin levels. Additionally, matcha helps people remain more focused and relaxed throughout the day.

You Can Incorporate Matcha Into Meals

Matcha has made its way into both beverages and meals, including sweet and savory dishes. You may be familiar with baked goods that contain matcha, but chefs incorporate matcha into soups, stir-fries, puddings, and even guacamole (matchamole). Because of its assertive umami flavor, matcha can be a unique component in numerous culinary preparations.

More Antioxidants Than Green Tea

By drinking matcha, you ingest the pure tea leaf in powdered form. That means that it contains more antioxidants than a regular cup of green tea. Some studies found that matcha exhibits more antioxidants than blueberries, pomegranates, and acai berries. Matcha also contains catechins, which counteract the effects of free radicals from UV rays, pollution, and airborne pollutants.

While matcha lattes can be delicious, the sugars and milk may counteract the health benefits. Casein, the protein in milk, binds to catechin in matcha and inhibits the health benefits. Just keep that in mind as you move forward with your love for matcha.

Matcha has risen to popularity over the years and has become quite the sensation among foodies. From matcha lattes to homemade matcha energy bites, this green tea powder is revered as a superfood. What many people don’t know is that matcha’s numerous antioxidant properties do wonders for the skin.

The skin care market is oversaturated with chemical serums, animal-tested products, and creams that promise to make you look 20 years younger. Skip the chemical products and get on board with matcha and the DIY anti-aging slave in this article.

What Is Matcha?

Matcha has been a part of Japanese culture since the 12th century. It is made from the dried leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which is used to produce all types of teas. What sets matcha apart from green tea, white tea, or oolong tea is the fact that it is never heated. Additionally, matcha is minimally processed, which helps it retain the nutrients and antioxidants.

Skin Benefits Of Matcha

In case you aren’t familiar with matcha, it is a dark green powder. The color indicates that it has a high amount of chlorophyll, which has been known to protect the skin from sun damage and reduce photo-aging (fewer wrinkles and sun spots). Chlorophyll helps to shield the skin from impurities or bacteria that can easily clog pores.

Another benefit of matcha is that it contains epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which is a powerful antioxidant that has antibiotic and antibacterial properties. Studies have shown that EGCG helps to reduce blemishes, and it works to promote supple and smoother skin because of how it rejuvenates skin cells.

While the matcha is the star of this anti-aging salve recipe, we can’t neglect the healing properties of the other ingredients. Beeswax and coconut oil provide a beautiful moisturizing base, and the essential oils in this salve have been known to keep the skin clear and balanced. Frankincense and myrrh oils are known for benefiting the skin, but geranium oil is lesser known, even though it enhances skin health.

Matcha Green Tea Salve

Ingredients:

 • 2-4 salve containers (2-ounce tin containers work great)
 • 2 ounces beeswax pastilles
 • 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
 • 1 tablespoon organic unrefined coconut oil
 • 12 drops frankincense essential oil
 • 8 drops geranium essential oil
 • 7 drops myrrh essential oil
 • ½ teaspoon matcha green tea powder

Instructions:

 • Pour water into the bottom pan of a double boiler and place it on the stove over medium heat. If you don’t have a double boiler, pour a few inches of water into a medium saucepan and place over medium heat.
 • Add the beeswax to the top of the double boiler and stir until melted. If you are using the saucepan method, add the beeswax to a heat-safe bowl and place it on top of the saucepan. Stir until melted.
 • Once the beeswax is melted and there are no lumps, pour the coconut and sweet almond oils into the boil and stir to combine.
 • Remove the bowl with the melted oils from the heat and turn the stove off. Once the oils have cooled slightly, add the essential oils and stir well.
 • Finally, pour the matcha powder in and stir slowly. It tends to clump so make sure that it is fully mixed in, scraping down the sides of the bowl if necessary.
 • Pour the mixture into the containers, but don’t fill to the brim. You want a little room on top. Leave the salve on the counter until it is fully cooled (about 30-40min), and then put the lids on.
 • Store the containers in a cool dry place. When you want to use it, apply a pea-sized amount to the desired areas.

Women require specific herbs to maintain balanced hormone levels. Hormones, which are involved in many interactions in the body, are different chemicals/compounds that are tied to appetite, energy levels, skin health, reproductive health, mood and more. While it is vital to maintain healthy hormone levels, many women regularly experience hormonal imbalances.

What Are Hormones?

Produced by glands in the endocrine system, hormones travel through the bloodstream to various tissues and organs, giving orders of what to do and when to do it. When hormone levels are out of balance, side effects can occur throughout the body. Women typically experience varying levels of estrogen and progesterone, but they can occasionally have a testosterone imbalance. The side effects of imbalanced hormones can include changes in blood pressure, depression, weight gain, skin rashes, bloating, headaches, brittle bones, reduced sex drive, breast tenderness, and more.

Addressing The Problem

Too often do women seek out methods, which don’t target the root of the problem, to remedy hormonal imbalance. Some of these methods are too aggressive and can actually throw your hormones even more out of whack. The key to addressing the problem is to get to the root cause, and medications like oral contraceptives may just cover up the symptoms. Natural remedies, like the following teas, are great for helping women balance hormones. Try them and let us know how they work for you.

Nettle Leaf

This herb contains just about every vitamin and mineral that is required for human health and growth. Containing more chlorophyll than any other herb, nettle works to relieve constipation, purify the blood, guard against anemia, and nourish the kidneys for a healthier urinary tract. Research has shown that nettle contains calcium in its most absorbable form, which is necessary for menopausal women. Another reason to consume nettle is that it is abundant in iron, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and vitamins A, C, D, and K.

Matcha

Matcha has been praised for the presence of vitamin C, catechins, and EGCG, a powerful antioxidant that has been known to fight cancer cells. Matcha contains ten times more antioxidants than green tea, 17 times more antioxidants than blueberries, and six times more antioxidants than goji berries. When it comes to hormones, matcha works to decrease estrogen levels, and extremely high estrogen levels have been linked to increased risk of breast cancer. The antioxidants also support the liver, which aids with hormone regulation.

Red Clover

This herb has long since been used to establish fertility. The diverse nutritional profile makes it excellent for the uterus, and the calcium and magnesium work to relax the nervous system for optimal hormone levels. Many women have attributed heightened fertility during childbearing years to red clover, and this has a lot to do with the trace minerals. Studies show that the trace minerals in red clover help to restore and balance hormonal functions by supplying the minerals to various glands in the body. Red clover also helps alkalize the body, establishing a healthy acid/alkaline balance in the vagina and uterus to decrease the risk of infections.

Spearmint

According to several studies, spearmint has demonstrated an ability to reduce testosterone levels in women, providing relief from hormonal imbalances. Spearmint helps to increase female hormones that are needed for ovulation, including estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). One study found that women, who drank two cups of spearmint tea for five consecutive days, experienced decreased testosterone and elevated levels of FSH, LH, and estradiol. Another study found that testosterone levels dropped in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) when they drank two cups of spearmint tea per day over a 30-day period.
