For many years, people have been advised against using oils on the skin to keep it clear. For this reason, people purchase oil-free skin care products in hopes of achieving clearer skin. According to researchers, there are surprising benefits to applying oils on the skin. In fact, certain oils have soothing and calming properties that can benefit irritated or inflamed skin. Other oils can help cleanse the skin, remove makeup, and reduce the risk of breakouts.

What Is Cleansing Oil?

A cleansing oil is an oil-based cleanser that has the ability to remove makeup, surface debris, and excess oil from the skin. They work differently from water-soluble cleansers, which have a gel, cream, or foaming texture. Those traditional cleansers use surfactants, which are ingredients that interact with makeup, surface debris, or oil on the skin in a way that allows you to rinse them away with water. If a cleanser contains hydrating ingredients, it will feel smooth and soft on the skin. Cleansing oils may also contain surfactants, but they are not the primary ingredients; rather, the oils do the work to cleanse the skin.

Benefits Of Cleansing Oils

First of all, the best cleansing oils for the skin contain non-fragrant plant oils. Those oils offer beneficial glycerides, which help remove grime, makeup, and more, while simultaneously hydrating your skin. Some of the primary benefits of using a cleansing oil include:

 • They leave the skin feeling smooth and supple
 • Compatible with most cleansers, should you want to double cleanse
 • They aid with the quick and easy removal of most sunscreens and makeup types

How Do Cleansing Oils Work?

Oils do not simply moisturize or hydrate the skin, even though there is a difference between those two actions (click here for more info). Oils work as solvents, which are a group of ingredients that dissolve similar substances. If you remember chemistry class, like dissolves like, meaning polar compounds dissolve polar compounds. Polar and nonpolar compounds do not dissolve in each other, hence why oil and water don’t mix.

Oils are lipophilic, meaning they are attracted to other oils, including sebum, which is what the skin produces. They are also attracted to oil-like ingredients in makeup, which is what gives them their ability to quickly dissolve makeup and excess oil.

Who Should Use A Cleansing Oil?

If a cleansing oil is made to be rinsable with water, then it is generally safe for all skin types. The use of a cleansing oil depends on a couple things: personal preference and how much long-wearing makeup or water-resistant sunscreen you wear. A good cleansing oil will break these products down easily. Just make sure that your cleansing oil does not contain any problematic ingredients, such as fragrances. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that with the following cleansing oil recipe. Please enjoy and let us know if it works for you in the comments below.

Homemade Cleansing Oil

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup jojoba oil
 • 1/4 cup + 2 teaspoons grapeseed oil
 • 2.5 teaspoons castor oil
 • 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon cromollient SCE
 • 1/4 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • Once you’ve measured out all of the ingredients for the cleansing oil, pour them into a glass bottle, screw on the top, and shake well to combine.
 • Use as needed to help remove makeup or sunscreens.

]]>

How many products have you seen that are intended to get rid of bags under the eyes? So many creams and serums claim to de-puff and lighten the area under the eyes, but they don’t always work. That’s especially true if you genetically inherited dark circles or eye bags. It’s also true if you have sensitive skin and easily react to ingredients in skin care products. Common causes of bags under the eyes include:

 • Chronic fatigue
 • Pigmentation issues
 • Aging
 • Allergies
 • Eczema
 • Sun exposure

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can contribute to dark circles under the eyes. Since nearly half the world’s population doesn’t meet daily water intake recommendations, drinking water is a great place to start. How much water you need to properly hydrate the body will depend on weight and level of physical activity. Generally speaking, drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day to hydrate the body. If you weigh 150 pounds and divide that by two to get 75, you should be drinking 75 ounces of water per day.

Apply Tea Bags

It’s lovely to sip a warm cup of tea, but what do you do with the tea bag once you finish your cup? You probably throw it away, which is a huge mistake. If you drink a cup of green tea, chamomile tea, or peppermint tea, save the tea bag and put it on your eyes to help fight dark circles. Caffeinated teas work best because they help increase blood flow to the skin. According to research, green tea exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that help decrease puffiness.

Wear Sunscreen Daily

One of the main reasons to apply sunscreen every day is to reduce the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and skin discoloration. The American Academy of Dermatology Association encourages all people to wear sunscreen. Broad spectrum sunscreens help protect against UVA and UVB rays. Ideally, choose a mineral sunscreen and it may help protect against darkness under the eyes. You can also protect your eyes even more by wearing sunglasses and hats.

Wash Your Face Before Bed

If you improve your nightly skin care routine, you may not notice dark circles or bags when you wake up. You should always cleanse your face and remove makeup before bed. Sleeping with makeup, especially makeup around the eyes, can cause general irritation, allergic reaction, or infection that causes puffiness, redness, or other symptoms. Forgetting to wash your face at night may also increase your risk of wrinkles or general skin damage.

Use A Cold Compress

If you need relief from under-eye bags, a cold compress may help relieve the inflammation. Applying a cold compress to the eyes also works to constrict the blood vessels quickly, which provides temporary relief. If you don’t have a cold compress, try some chilled cucumbers, a cold teaspoon, a wet washcloth, or a bag of frozen vegetables. Before you apply your cold compress, wrap it in a soft cloth to protect your skin from getting too clothes. Allow the cold compress to sit on your skin for about five minutes.

Eat More Collagen-Rich Foods

The muscles and tissues that support your eyelids weaken as you get older. That means that you can experience sagging or bags under the eyes. If you increase your intake of vitamin C, the body has an easier time absorbing more hyaluronic acid, which naturally exists in the body. The amount that’s stored in the body, however, decreases with age. Foods that are rich in vitamin C work to boost collagen production by increasing hyaluronic acid levels. Great sources of vitamin C include kiwis, oranges, bell peppers, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, kale, and broccoli.

Cut Back On Alcohol

Decreasing your intake of alcohol relates to the first tip we gave in this article. Alcohol contributes to dehydration, and dehydration can increase the risk of under-eye bags or darkness under the eyes. If you crave that special drink, consider swapping it for sparkling water or infusing regular water with fruits and herbs.

Keep Your Head Elevated While You Sleep

If you can fall asleep while elevating your head higher, then experiment with this method. Add an extra pillow to prop your head up higher in order to prevent fluid from accumulating in your lower eyelids, which creates puffiness while you sleep. If that is not doable, causes pain, or makes it too difficult to fall asleep, try to elevate the top end of your mattress a couple inches. There are special bed risers that can make this process easier.

DIY Non-Toxic Micellar Water https://www.dherbs.com/articles/diy-non-toxic-micellar-water/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 09:35:00 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=168807

If you wear makeup then you probably use micellar water to remove it at the end of the day. It dissolves makeup gently and cleanses the skin with ease. If you are conscious of what you put on your skin, perhaps you use a non-toxic micellar water, which can be quite expensive. Can you make your own non-toxic version and will it be as effective? The last thing you want is to have to scrub your face with elbow grease to remove makeup.

What Is Micellar Water?

Micellar (pronounced “mi-sell-ar”) water originated in France and is a common skin care product that aids makeup removal. Additionally, it works to remove impurities from the skin in a gentle way. The name comes from the word micelle, which is a collection of molecules. Micellar water has a mild concentration of soap or detergent molecules in the water, so there are microscopic bubbles that float in the water. It doesn’t feel like a soapy solution when you apply it; rather, it just feels like washing your face with water.

How Is It Different Than A Toner?

In a typical skin care routine, you apply a toner to your face after washing it with a cleanser. You usually follow up the toner application with a moisturizer or serum. Traditional toners help to get rid of excess oil or residual dirt or makeup that you don’t wash away with your cleanser. New toners are more focused on skin hydration, with cleansing taking a back seat. Water is the primary ingredient in most toners, and the same goes for micellar water. The difference between micellar water and toners is in the added ingredients (there are no micelles of soap, but low concentrations of alpha or beta hydroxy acids for anti-acne purposes).

Does Micellar Water Remove Makeup?

Dermatologists agree that micellar water can get rid of most makeup and some waterproof cosmetic products. This is because regular micellar water contains a mild detergent. It doesn’t remove all types of makeup, though. Specialized makeup like stage makeup or certain types of waterproof cosmetics, such as mascara, prove difficult for micellar water to remove. It may remove some, but not all of it, and that is usually sufficient for most people.

The Non-Toxic Version

The non-toxic micellar water recipe in this article only contains five ingredients, all of which are completely natural. It contains jojoba oil, coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, almond oil, and witch hazel. Jojoba oil is perfect for anyone with sensitive skin and it is incredibly hydrating, working to lock moisture into your skin. Some people use coconut oil to naturally remove makeup because it dissolves makeup and cleanses the skin with its antimicrobial properties. Almond oil isn’t necessary for the recipe, but it helps to add extra moisture and reduces puffiness. Vegetable glycerin is another moisture-locking ingredient that helps to soothe the skin and break down grime and makeup. Finally, witch hazel works to relieve inflammation, fight acne, and tighten your pores.

DIY Non-Toxic Micellar Water

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup distilled water
 • 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
 • 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
 • 1 teaspoon almond oil
 • 2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
 • 1 tablespoon witch hazel

Instructions:

 • Pour all of the ingredients into a sealable container and shake well to combine.
 • When you use this micellar water to remove makeup, make sure to use it with a reusable cotton round.
 • This recipe feels exactly like any store bought version, if not better! Let us know how you like it in the comments below.

The environment affects your skin, whether you are indoors or outside. Ultraviolet (UV) rays, blue light, pollution, and more are environmental factors that cause oxidative damage to the skin. This process breaks down collagen and may even damage the skin barrier, which compromises the skin. A damaged barrier makes you more prone to dry skin, cracking, and damaging effects of environmental factors

UV Rays Are the Biggest Threat To The Skin

UV rays from the sun are the most significant environmental factor that can damage the skin. Not only do they increase signs of aging, but they also increase the risk of skin cancer. UV rays trigger the production of free radicals, which can surpass neutralizing antioxidants according to research. These free radicals can break down collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and other signs of aging. UV rays also stimulate melanin production, which can cause skin discolorations. Over time, too much exposure to UV rays without proper protection can dramatically increase the risk of numerous forms of skin cancer, especially melanoma

Air Pollution Plays A Role

Not only can air pollution affect your breathing, but it can also cause free radical damage on the skin, just like UV rays. Exposure to particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and hydrocarbons can cause skin inflammation and oxidative stress. According to research, skin inflammation can impair collagen synthesis, which causes the skin to sag and wrinkle over time. The last thing you want is for pollution to chew up your collagen and elastin!

If you want to take action to protect your skin from environmental damage, consider the following tips. They may come in handy more than you know!

Pick A Functional Powder For Sun Protection

If you are on-the-go, consider getting your hands on a functional powder. These types of powders have built-in SPF and are great options because you can dust them over existing lotions or makeup. They are great if you work in an office and need a little midday touch-up.

Try A Mineral Sunscreen

If you spend time in the sun, dermatologists agree that you must wear sunscreen in order to protect your skin. Ideally, you want to use sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, both of which physically block UV rays. Chemical sunscreen may be invisible after applying on the skin, but they allow some absorption of light. That’s why skin care experts recommend mineral-based sunscreens to effectively protect the skin. They may leave a whitish appearance on the skin, but better to be protected than not!

Consider Supplementing With Vitamins C & E

UV rays, air pollution, and blue light can all cause oxidative stress on the skin, a process that breaks down collagen and elastin. The best way to neutralize free radicals is by maintaining a steady intake or application of antioxidants. Vitamin C tends to work more efficiently with vitamin E, according to research studies. That’s why they are often together in different formulations. Vitamin C and E serums can help prep your skin in the morning, providing a natural defense that it needs to face the day.

Opt For More Antioxidants

Not only do antioxidant serums have their place in the morning, but they also have their place at night. Opting for ingredients like glutathione and resveratrol can help repair damage that was done during the day. Resveratrol, which exists in grapes, peanuts, soy, and other foods, can sop up free radicals. Glutathione is another antioxidant that works to address dark spots, according to one study. There are many antioxidant creams or ointments that work to fight sun-damaging effects, but don’t neglect the consumption of antioxidants from colorful plant-based foods. Those do great things for your skin and other bodily systems and organs.

Wash Up Carefully Before Bed

After being out and about all day, you need to wash off all that grime that the skin accumulates. Before you go to bed, use a gentle cleanser that works to both clean out pores and keep the skin barrier intact. If you use a cleanser that is too rough, then you increase the risk of skin irritation.

Always Protect At Night

In addition to cleansing after a long day, you may want to apply other skin-nourishing ingredients before you hit the hay. Moisturizers or serums that contain antioxidants can help clear up environmental damage and support collagen production throughout the night.

The post How Often Should You Wash Your Face? appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

Face washing is an easy task, but there are different levels. Some people have multi-step face washing rituals, while others simply splash water on their face and call it a day. Caring for your skin involves understanding what type of cleanser is best for your skin. It also means that you have to know how often to watch your face.

To be clear, face washing is an integral component to your skin care regimen. Failure to cleanse regularly can lead to several issues, including blemishes, excess oily production, and breakouts. If you don’t wash your face, pores will clog and your risk of developing acne increases exponentially. Additionally, not washing your face can prevent the skin from absorbing other products that you apply to your face.

According to a 2017 survey of 1,000 adult men and women, more than half of the people said that they did not wash their face before bedtime. The conductors of the survey also noted that nearly 80% of Americans make at least one skin washing mistake. You see, face washing not only benefits how your skin looks, but also how it feels. Read on to learn about how often you should wash your face, and how to cleanse it correctly.

Why Is It Important To Wash Your Face?

If you want your skin to appear healthy and young, you need to wash your face. Facial skin is always exposed to the environment, so it easily collects dirt, oil, and other debris. If you don’t remove those substances, facial skin becomes irritated and you can develop other skin problems. Without washing your face, the skin appears dirtier, drier, greasier, and older-looking, according to dermatologists.

How Often Should You Wash Your Face?

This is the big question of this entire article! Generally speaking, most dermatologists agree that you should wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and once at night before bed. Washing your face in the morning removes any impurities that may settle on your skin overnight. It also helps whatever moisturizers you apply to go on with ease. Similarly, washing your face at night helps remove all of the grime and skin care products you applied earlier in the day. Then your skin is refreshed before your head hits the pillow.

Although those are the recommendations for face washing, you don’t have to wash your face that often if you have sensitive skin or certain skin conditions. In fact, dermatologists can often prescribe a regimen that best suits your skin’s needs. If you have dry or sensitive skin, rinse your face with warm water in the morning and cleanse it once at night to remove dirt. If you have an active flare-up of rosacea or eczema, you may only need one face wash at night to reduce irritation. Again, everyone’s needs are different, but the general recommendation is two face washes per day.

The Right Way To Wash Your Face

First of all, consider your skin type and wash accordingly. After that, identify what your daily activities are, your makeup habits, and the types of products you use. If you wear makeup, you may require a makeup remover or balm prior to washing your skin. Once you have all of that information locked down, follow the steps below:

 • Rinse your face with lukewarm water.
 • Apply a gentle facial cleanser to your fingertips and massage it into your face in a circular motion for 30 seconds. Relax your face and don’t be too vigorous. Additionally, pay extra attention to your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and jawline.
 • Rinse your face with lukewarm water and then pat dry with a clean towel.

Most cleansers are formulated to mimic the pH of the sky, so as not to dry out the skin or compromise the skin barrier. A lot of people just use regular body wash or hand soap to wash their face. Those soaps can easily strip the skin of moisture and cause irritation. For that reason, use a cleanser that is specifically designed for facial skin, but choose one that fits your skin type. If you have dry or sensitive skin, consider a gentle or creamy cleanser. If you have oily skin, you may benefit from a gel or foam cleanser. People with dull skin may require an alpha hydroxy acid or glycolic-based cleanser to remove dead skin cells and give your skin a healthier glow.

Some people don’t seem to deal with dry or chapped lips, while others have to deal with them year-round. In the winter and spring, lip dryness occurs because of low humidity indoors, while the summer sun can zap moisture from the lips. Are you the type of person who keeps lip balms all over the place? You have one in the bathroom, one in the car, one at your desk, and one on your bedside table. If you fall into that category, then you need the lip scrub in this article.

A lip scrub is similar to a face scrub, only it contains special ingredients that are gentle on the lips. The reason for this is because the skin on the lips is more sensitive than other parts of the face or body. Using a lip scrub can contribute to softer lips that are more hydrated and less prone to tears, discoloration, and dryness. Just as you would exfoliate your face or body, so do you need to exfoliate your lips. Moreover, lip scrubs contain moisturizing ingredients that hydrate the lips while cleaning away dead skin cells. Just make sure to use gentle exfoliants like sugar or coffee on sensitive lip skin.

Reasons That You Need A Lip Scrub

A lip scrub should be an essential component of any skin care routine because the lips deserve as much attention as your face. The reasons that you should use a lip scrub are detailed below:

 • A lip scrub helps to remedy chapped lips by removing dead skin cells with gentle exfoliants. At the same time the moisturizing ingredients provide the lips with hydration and nutrients that encourage healthier lip skin.
 • A lip scrub can act like a primer that you use prior to applying your favorite lipstick. Additionally, it makes the removal process much easier.
 • By massaging a lip scrub on your lips, you can help improve blood circulation, which makes your lips appear more plump and healthy.
 • A lip scrub can help protect your lips from the harmful chemicals in your favorite lipstick.

How To Exfoliate Your Lips

Before you start scrubbing your lips, make sure that you clean your lips first. Rinse away any lip gloss, lip balm, makeup, or lipstick. Grab your lip scrub and gently exfoliate your lips using a soft bristle toothbrush or flannel cloth to get rid of dead skin. While you scrub your lips, use a humidifier to keep the air around you moist. Rinse the lip scrub away with lukewarm water and then pat dry. Apply a lip balm that has an SPF factor if you use this lip scrub in the morning. If you use the lip scrub before bed, apply a hydrating, moisturizing lip balm after patting your lips dry.

DIY Vanilla Mint Lip Scrub

Ingredients:

 • 1 tablespoon white sugar
 • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
 • 1/8 teaspoon alcohol-free vanilla extract
 • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 1 tablespoon refined coconut oil

Instructions:

 • Combine the white and brown sugar in a small bowl and whisk to combine.
 • Add the vanilla extract and peppermint essential oil to the sugar and stir gently. If there are lumps, use the back of a spoon to press them out.
 • If your coconut oil is solid, heat in the microwave for about 10 seconds to melt it. Once melted, drizzle into the sugar bowl and stir well to combine.
 • Spoon the mixture into a container with a lid. This scrub is sufficient for several applications and it should keep for several weeks, so long as you store it in a cool, dry place. Just make sure that no water gets into it!
 • Aim to use this scrub once a week, using about one teaspoon per application.

Scalp dandruff, although a drag and slightly embarrassing, is not unusual. What may take you by surprise is if dry flakes regularly fall from your eyebrows. Yes, eyebrow dandruff is a thing, according to certified dermatologists. It is one of the most common symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis, but other causes can also lead to eyebrow dandruff.

Symptoms Of Eyebrow Dandruff

More often than not, eyebrow dandruff is not the only symptom you experience. Inflammation in the eyebrow area, itchiness, or rash can occur, and you may require an over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication to fix the issue. The most common symptoms of eyebrow dandruff include:

 • Light, white to yellowish flakes of skin that shed
 • Mild itching (although itching is not always a symptom)
 • Eyebrows that appear scaly
 • Mild erythema (redness) and irritated patches of skin on the eyebrows
 • An increased amount of sebum (oil) in the eyebrows

Note, eyebrow dandruff can be the result of environmental factors like cold weather or harsh skin products. When environmental factors cause eyebrow dandruff, symptoms don’t usually include inflammation. When seborrheic dermatitis or contact dermatitis are the underlying causes, inflammation is a primary symptom. Read on to figure out what your body is trying to tell you if you experience eyebrow dandruff.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a reaction on the skin that is caused by irritants or allergens. Ingredients in skin or hair-care products can often cause irritation, meaning contact dermatitis responsible. Fragrances in detergent or makeup products can trigger this scaly skin reaction, but you may not see the symptom surface for a day or two following exposure. Contact dermatitis can cause an itchy, irritating rash in the area and the skin may flake off, causing dandruff. If contact dermatitis is the culprit of eyebrow dandruff, you may also experience dry or cracked skin, bumps and blisters, or swelling/tenderness in the area.

Dry Skin

Good ole dry skin can often be the source of scaly brows. It is easy to mistake dry skin near the eyebrows for dandruff, but the truth may be that your skin just lacks moisture. Unlike eczema or psoriasis, which stem from an inflammatory response in the immune system, dry skin in the eyebrow region is a common symptom of those living in areas with low humidity or cold weather. If you try to use lotions or creams to remedy dry skin and still experience flakiness, you may need to consult a dermatologist to get a definitive answer.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes skin cells to grow at an accelerated rate, resulting in thick patches of itchy, red, scaly skin. Although the condition commonly affects the knees, elbows, scalp, and trunk, it may appear on other parts of the body, like your face. Experts believe that this inflammatory issue is caused by an overactive immune system. Irregular immune function can indicate why you see an influx of flakes that accumulate on the skin’s surface.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common form of eczema and usually shows itself as dandruff or rash on certain parts of the body that produce a lot of oil. The upper back, nose, and scalp are fairly common areas to experience symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis causes irritated patches of skin and inflammation, but it can also cause flare-ups near the eyebrows. Wherever it shows up, seborrheic dermatitis stems from an overblown inflammatory immune response to an overgrowth of Malassezia, a common type of yeast that lives on the skin.

New to the world of homemade beauty products? The homemade hand cream in this article is the perfect entry point, especially if soaps and body butters seem out of reach at the moment. If you make soap or lotion, you may already have the ingredients in the hand cream, which is quite thick and balm-like. It effortlessly melts on the skin, which absorbs the nourishing elements within a few minutes.

The skin on your hands and your face is constantly exposed to the elements, yet you neglect your hands more than your face. You don’t apply sunscreen to your hands or palms, and you probably don’t cover them in makeup either. The skin on your hands is quite different from the skin on other areas of the body. The middle layer of skin (the dermis) connects to the outer layer (epidermis) through many papillae, which are connective tissue. Rows of papillae form ridges that make up your finger and handprints, but they also help protect the skin on your hands from tearing.

The skin on the back of your hands is much thinner, with hardly any fatty tissue. Because of that, sebum production is very low, making it harder for your hands to hold moisture. This is why it is very common for your hands to dry out quickly. For this reason, you are responsible for moisturizing them, especially if you don’t want them to appear wrinkly and dry.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids, specifically lauric acid, which exhibit antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. This is just one reason to incorporate coconut oil into your skin care routine. Coconut oil also exhibits emollient properties, which work to repair the skin barrier’s function, helping your body defend against environmental threats. Forming a protective layer that sits on top of the skin, coconut oil helps lock moisture into the skin, while also preventing transepidermal water loss.

Mango Butter

Mango butter is the substance that results from cold-pressing the fats from mango pits. The creamy butter is a great ingredient to use on the skin and hair. Mango butter has a semi-solid consistency, but quickly melts into the skin without making you feel greasy. Similar to coconut oil, mango butter provides a protective layer on the skin, preventing bacteria and environmental chemicals from entering your pores. Mango butter also contains nutrients that may promote skin repair. According to one study, a foot cream made with mango butter was able to completely repair cracked skin in human volunteers.

Olive Oil

In addition to being a great addition to your diet, olive oil is a wonderful ingredient to add to your skin care routine. If you suffer from dry skin, you can rub a small amount of olive oil into the dry area, cover it with plastic wrap for a couple hours, and then notice smoother skin. Olive oil also exhibits antibacterial properties that may help to accelerate the healing of cuts and burns. Mix it with essential oils, healing herbs, coconut oil, or beeswax to enhance its healing properties.

Beeswax

Different civilizations have used beeswax for centuries, specifically for the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Beeswax is a great moisturizer suitable for people with all skin types, including the most sensitive skin. Additionally, beeswax is a humectant, meaning it attar’s water molecules from the air. That helps to keep your skin hydrated over time. Just like coconut oil and mango butter, beeswax forms a protective barrier on the skin, preventing it from environmental assaults, moisturizing the skin in the process.

Nourishing Hand Cream

Ingredients:

 • 3 ounces coconut oil
 • 1.75 ounces mango butter
 • 1 ounce olive oil
 • 0.125 ounces beeswax pellets

Instructions:

 • Add an inch or so of water to the bottom of a double boiler and place over medium-high heat. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and place the top on.
 • Melt the coconut oil, mango butter, and beeswax in the top of the double boiler. Once the ingredients are melted, stir in the olive oil and then remove from heat.
 • Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature until solidified (about four hours or overnight). You can also transfer the mixture into a bigger bowl and allow it to solidify in there, as you will need to whip the final product with a hand mixer.
 • Using an electric hand mixer, whip the solidified mixture until fluffy. This may take about 10 minutes.
 • Store in a clean container at room temperature. If temperatures exceed 80º F where you store it, it will most likely melt.

If you’ve ever combed through beauty stores or the beauty aisles at big box retailers, you are familiar with the plethora of makeup removal products. How do you choose the right cleansing oil, makeup wipes, mi cellar waters, or makeup removers? You should put a lot of thought into which makeup products you put on your face, and which products you use to remove them. For this reason, we want to provide you with a natural makeup remover that contains two nourishing ingredients.

What Is A Cleansing Balm?

A cleansing balm is essentially a skin cleanser that contains a combination of oils, waxes, and emulsifiers. Cleansing balms are solid, unlike makeup removers that are liquid. Like dissolves like, which means that oils and butters can dissolve other oils, makeup, and thick coats of sunscreen. Because cleansing balms contain natural ingredients, it takes two steps: the initial step removes makeup and the second step is a thorough cleanse, removing grime, oils, and whatever you didn’t remove in step one.

Shea Butter

Commercial makeup removers tend to dry out your skin, stripping it of its natural oils. This can lead to damaged and irritated skin, but this won’t happen when you use shea butter. Shea butter contains a large amount of oleic acid, which is a fatty acid that moisturizes and nourishes the skin. Shea butter is easy to apply and remove from the skin, and it also works to deep condition the skin, leaving it moisturized after makeup removal. Just make sure that the shea butter you purchase is unrefined because you want high quality ingredients for your skin, especially your face. There are unscented and scented varieties, but some scented shea butters contain essential oils that are harsh on the face.

Coconut Oil

Most of you have a jar of coconut oil in their pantry at this point. It’s been touted as the “miracle ingredient,” helping to whiten your teeth, reduce redness on the skin, or enhance the appearance of hair. Some people praise coconut oil, while others warn against it because it can potentially clog pores. It may be comedogenic, encouraging the formation of blackheads, but each person has their own opinion on coconut oil. According to beauty experts, coconut oil is an effective, natural ingredient for removing makeup. It exhibits antibacterial, anti-yeast, and detergent effects, all of which help to remove makeup

DIY Cleansing Balm

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup unrefined shea butter
 • 2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

 • Add the shea butter and coconut oil to the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Make sure there is about one inch of water in the bottom of the double boiler.
 • Once the ingredients are melted, stir to combine and remove from heat.
 • Pour the mixture into a small, heat-safe glass jar and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Place it in the fridge for about one hour to solidify.
 • Remove the cleansing balm from the fridge, screw on the top of the jar, and store it at room temperature. Use when ready.

A Quick Note: If you live in a hot climate, consider melting one tablespoon of cosmetic beeswax pellets with the shea butter and coconut oil. This will help prevent your cleansing balm from softening at room temperature.

Who wants to save money and apply natural ingredients to the face in order to remove eye makeup? Everyone, we assume, because looking your best has a lot to do with what you put on your skin. The skin around the eyes is very sensitive, which is why you want to avoid harsh ingredients. It may not seem like natural ingredients can wipe away eye makeup, but they can and they will.

In the beginning, you will have to spend more than the average price of eye makeup remover. Unfortunately, the ingredients you need are not free, but they aren’t insanely expensive either. Plus, once you have them, you can make this recipe over and over again, instead of buying new eye makeup remover bottles. Let’s take a look at the three ingredients you will need for this recipe.

Distilled Water

When it comes to applying water to the skin, especially to the face, you want to use the cleanest water possible. Distilled water is free of toxins that may be present in regular tap water, or even certain bottled waters. If you have sensitive skin, distilled water is a great option to include in any face wash or makeup remover. It works to dissolve the impurities on the skin and may help unclog pores, leaving your skin clean and refreshed.

Baby Unscented Pure Castile Soap

The reason that you should opt for unscented soap is because most of the oils and other ingredients are safe for use around the eyes, in addition to other sensitive areas. If you know of a natural tear-free baby soap, you can opt to use that in place of this ingredient. When you combine Castile soap with a carrier oil, like the almond oil in this recipe, it has an easier time removing makeup. Always apply the Castile solution to a washcloth or cotton pad and then wipe the makeup away. The great thing about using Castile soap with a carrier oil to remove makeup is that it helps to cleanse your skin, not strip it of its natural oils.

Almond Oil

The only reason to avoid almond oil is if you have a nut allergy; otherwise, this carrier oil is effective at removing makeup. It is naturally rich in vitamin E and other healthy fats, which is where most of its benefits come from. Beauty experts give almond oil a comedogenic rating of 2, meaning that it will unlikely clog your pores. For the most part, you can use this oil to help safely remove water-resistant makeup. Lastly, almond oil is naturally rich in antioxidants that help protect your skin from oxidative stress, premature aging, and sun damage.

Homemade Eye Makeup Remover

Ingredients:

 • 1/2 cup distilled water
 • 1 teaspoon baby unscented pure Castile soap
 • 1 teaspoon almond oil

Instructions:

 • Pour all of the ingredients into a glass bottle and stir to combine. Store in a cool dry place.
 • When ready to use, moisten a cotton round or ball with a small amount of the eye makeup remover.
 • Gently rub over your eyes to remove makeup.
