The post 4 Health Benefits Of Lemons appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Are you friends with a neighbor just because they have a gorgeous lemon tree that produces so many lemons? We wouldn’t blame you if that’s your situation. Lemons, or citrus fruits in general, hold that much power. They contain a lot of vitamin C and other antioxidants that support various aspects of health. Take the trend of drinking lemon water, for example, which may help support digestion, detoxification, and reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Lemons are known for their wonderfully acidic juice, but they actually help to alkalize the body, despite that tart flavor. In its natural state, lemon juice is acidic with a pH of about 2. Once it is metabolized in the body, however, it becomes alkaline with a pH level well over 7. And the great thing about lemons is that you can have them year-round in many parts of the world. This depends on the trees’s geographical location and how long the harvesting season is (about a few months).

Nearly all lemons sold in North America are Lisbon or Eureka. These are classic, small- to medium-sized, bright yellow lemons that have a slightly tangy flavor. Meyer lemons, which are sometimes available in specialty markets in the winter, have a darker peel and sweeter, floral juice and flesh. Continue reading to learn more about the health benefits of lemons.

They Support Heart Health

Due to their vitamin C and antioxidant profile, lemons help protect your cells from damaging free radicals. These unstable particles can damage your cells if you don’t neutralize them. By fighting free radical damage, you ultimately work to prevent atherosclerosis, a condition that’s characterized by plaque buildup in the arteries and can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The phenolic compounds in lemons work to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and support endothelial function. For reference, endothelial function is how easily blood flows throughout the body. Reduced endothelial function can increase your risk of heart disease. A 2017 study found that higher fruit and vegetable intake reduced the risk of cancer, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular disease. So eat your lemons!

They Help Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits composed of minerals that build up in the urinary tract and form in the kidneys. Passing a kidney stone can be a very painful experience, affecting about 10% of people. If you increase levels of urine citrate, a weak acid, and make urine more alkaline, you may help prevent kidney stones

Lemons contain a form of citric acid that works to increase urine citrate levels. The citric acid binds with urinary calcium in order to prevent oversaturated urine. It also binds to clumps of calcium oxalate crystals to help prevent them from growing and turning into kidney stones. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that consuming four ounces of lemon juice mixed with water per day may help reduce the risk of kidney stones.

They Prevent Cell Damage

As mentioned earlier in this article, lemons are naturally rich in antioxidants, which work to fight free radical damage. The research states that citrus fruits contain a wide array of antioxidants, but newer research indicates that the peels of citrus fruits contain higher amounts of antioxidants. When you fight free radical damage with these unique antioxidants, you help prevent cell damage, which ultimately reduces your risk of chronic kidney disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is technically a group of chronic, progressive lung diseases that limit airflow to the lungs, which makes it difficult to breathe.

They Enhance Iron Absorption

Iron is a mineral that you need for optimal growth and development. The body uses iron to make hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of your body. Lemons contain a minuscule amount of iron, but they can enhance iron absorption because they are rich in vitamin C. One lemon contains over 30% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body better absorb nonheme iron, which is found in plant-based and iron-fortified foods. Pairing your iron foods with vitamin C helps you absorb iron even more efficiently.

The post The Top 5 Health Benefits Of Pomegranates appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Pomegranates are round, red fruits that have an inner white flesh packed with crunchy, juicy edible seeds, known as arils. They are quite unique in flavor and their juice is very popular in grocery stores. Fresh pomegranates are some of the best sources of beneficial antioxidants and polyphenols. According to many studies, these antioxidant compounds may slow cancer cell growth, reduce inflammation, fight infections, and boost brain function. This article aims to highlight some of the most impressive health benefits of pomegranates.

Pomegranate arils, what people commonly refer to as the seeds, are either eaten raw or processed into pomegranate juice. Believe it or not, pomegranate juice is the source of grenadine syrup, which is famous in the non-alcoholic drink known as the Shirley Temple. You also see grenadine in various cocktails for flavor enhancement and color.

Nutrition Facts

Pomegranate seeds exhibit a diverse nutritional profile with several important nutrients, including vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, and folate. They are also rich in heart-healthy fiber, and a half-cup of pomegranate provides the following nutrients:

 • Calories: 72.2
 • Carbohydrates: 16.3 grams (g)
 • Protein: 1.5 g
 • Fat: 1 g
 • Vitamin K: 14.2 micrograms (mcg)
 • Folate: 33.1 mcg
 • Fiber: 3.5 g
 • Potassium: 205 milligrams (mg)
 • Vitamin C: 8.9 mg
 • Manganese: 0.1 mg
 • Copper: 0.1 mg

They Reduce Joint Pain

Arthritis is a condition that is characterized by the inflammation of one or more joints. It can cause pain, stiffness, and typically worsens with age. Because of the flavonoid content, pomegranates provide necessary antioxidants that work as anti-inflammatory agents in the body. This process may work to relieve symptoms of joint pain and arthritis. In fact, eating pomegranates may prevent chronic inflammation, which increases the risk of inflammatory conditions like arthritis. The reason for this is because they contain punicalagins, which exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory properties in test-tube and animal studies.

They Help Lower Blood Pressure

The juice of pomegranate arils contains several different polyphenols and antioxidants that may boost heart health and lower blood pressure. A 2013 study found that people with high blood pressure who consumed pomegranate juice successfully decreased systolic and diastolic pressure by 7% and 6%, respectively. A separate study concluded that pomegranate juice was beneficial for people with high blood pressure, as it helped lower levels after two weeks of daily consumption.

They Help Enhance Memory

Several studies found that the polyphenols in pomegranates may significantly enhance cognitive function. One study found that these polyphenols provided long-lasting protection from memory dysfunction caused by heart surgery. Another study monitored elderly participants with memory problems. They drank eight ounces of either pomegranate juice or a flavor-matched placebo drink for four weeks. At the end of the study, the participants who drank the pomegranate juice experienced improved markers of visual and verbal memory. Additionally, researchers noted that incorporating pomegranates into your diet may help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

They May Support Urinary Health

Both test-tube and human studies found that pomegranate extract may reduce the formation of kidney stones. Researchers attribute this benefit to the antioxidant activity in pomegranates. One study involved adults between the ages of 18-70 who experienced recurrent kidney stones. They received 1,000 mg of pomegranate extract for 90 days. The extract helped inhibit the mechanism by which kidney stones are formed in the body. Additional animal studies found that pomegranate extract was able to regulate oxalates, calcium, and phosphates in the blood, all three of which are components of kidney stones.

They Are Natural Aphrodisiacs

Many cultures associate the pomegranate with abundance and fertility because of their many seeds. Within recent years, researchers have studied pomegranates for their potential libido-boosting effects. One study, for example, found that consuming 100% pure pomegranate juice increased salivary testosterone levels in participants by 24%. This, in turn, increased sexual desire and mood. Other research in animal models notes that pomegranate juice may help increase blood flow and erectile response. More research is necessary in humans, but pomegranates may offer similar benefits for humans affected by sexual dysfunction.

The post 6 Impressive Health Benefits Of Coconut Water appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Coconut water is a trendy beverage, as is evident by the many cartons and bottles in grocery stores. It is the clear liquid that some people refer to as the nectar of the gods. In tropical regions, coconut water has long been an integral component of diets and healthcare practices. Ayurveda, for example, used coconut water to help support urination, semen production, and digestion. Nowadays, though, people mainly drink it to boost hydration and increase electrolyte intake.

What Is Coconut Water?

Not to be confused with coconut milk, which combines coconut water and coconut meat, coconut water is the clear liquid inside coconuts. The right coconut water exhibits a sweet, nutty flavor profile. Younger coconuts tend to have the best tasting water, whereas the water in older coconuts with hardened meat tends to be more pungent. Coconut water is low in sugar and calories and contains potassium, magnesium, and sodium. These electrolytes work to replenish nutrients you lose via sweat. Although coconut water is not a replacement for regular water, it is better than any sugary sports drink you’ll find. Continue reading to learn more about the health benefits of this delicious elixir.

Electrolytes Galore:

Coconut water is the natural, refreshing, healthier alternative to sugary sports drinks. One cup of coconut water, for example, contains 600 milligrams (mg) of potassium. That satisfies 16% of the daily value (DV) of potassium, which works to improve muscle contractions and kidney function. Additionally, potassium also works to regulate sodium levels in the body, which may help improve heart health. Coconut water also has fewer carbohydrates than bottled sports drinks, making it an excellent choice for post-workout rehydration.

Kidney Stone Prevention

According to U.S. health surveys, 6% of women and 11% of men experience kidney stones at least once in their lifetime. One of the best ways to avoid kidney stones is to stay hydrated. A 2018 study monitored participants without kidney stones who drank coconut water. The researchers noted that coconut water helped participants expel more citrate, chloride, and potassium during urination. That means that coconut water may help loosen stones or prevent them from forming. A 2021 study had similar findings, including the fact that coconut water may alleviate kidney damage from diabetes.

May Lower Blood Sugar

As of now, most of the studies about this ability involve animals, not humans. For that reason, more human studies are needed to confirm the following benefits on humans. A 2015 study found that rats with diabetes were able to maintain better blood sugar control when treated with coconut water. The same study observed that the rats that were given coconut water had lower levels of hemoglobin A1c, indicating better long-term blood sugar control. A separate 2021 study on rats with diabetes found that coconut water was able to reduce blood glucose levels. Another blood sugar benefit of coconut water is that it contains magnesium, which may help improve insulin sensitivity.

Reduce Your Added Sugar Intake

Now, there is something to clarify in regards to this benefit. If you buy coconut water from grocery stores, you have to make sure that there are no added sugars or “natural flavors” on the ingredient list. You should purchase 100% coconut water that doesn’t come from concentrate. Harmless Harvest coconut water, for example, is an excellent option that is pure coconut water. Drinking 100% coconut water ensures that you don’t consume added sugars that are commonly in sodas, bottled juices, coffee drinks, and sports drinks.

Great After Prolonged Exercise

As we mentioned earlier in this article, coconut water is an excellent source of electrolytes. Replenishing electrolytes lost during exercise can help you maintain proper fluid balance and muscle function. Vital electrolytes include potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium, and coconut water happens to be rich in magnesium and potassium. Several studies found that drinking coconut water post workout is more beneficial than drinking water after exercise. A 2014 study found that coconut water improved exercise capacity better than a sports drink or water!

May Help Reduce Blood Pressure

Research suggests that including more potassium in your diet can help support heart health by reducing blood pressure. Potassium works to ease tension in your blood vessel walls, which helps to reduce blood pressure. Most Americans consume more sodium than they do potassium, which can increase blood pressure and risk of stroke. Eating more potassium rich foods like coconut water can help blunt the effects of sodium.

The post 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Throw Away Watermelon Rinds appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

Watermelon is one of the most classic summer fruits, leading the charge as the most consumed melon in America, with cantaloupe and honeydew right behind it. You can do so many things with watermelons! They can be used to make juices, smoothies, desserts, salads, and you can even grill watermelons. There is one part of the watermelon, though, that doesn’t get utilized, despite its rich nutritional content and inherent health benefits.

We are not talking about watermelon seeds, even though they can help with digestion. We are, of course, talking about the watermelon rind because it is the most underused part of the watermelon. This isn’t the green exterior layer, which you should avoid eating because of pesticides and the wax coating. The rind is the inside light green skin that has leftover bite marks after eating a triangular watermelon slice.

Most people don’t know that the rind has more citrulline, an important amino acid for heart health, than the pink flesh. The rind also contains a lot of blood-building chlorophyll, which has been proven to have therapeutic properties for over one hundred health conditions. Keep reading to learn about how eating watermelon rinds can benefit the body.

Beneficial For The Prostate

Recent studies have shown a promising link between lycopene and cancer prevention. Lycopene is an antioxidant, and antioxidants work to fight free radicals to reduce oxidative damage, a preventative step towards inhibiting cancer cell growth. The watermelon rind is a great source of lycopene, so try adding it to smoothies or pickling it.

It May Enhance the Male Libido

While watermelon is not a medication for erectile dysfunction, research indicates that regular consumption of watermelon rind can lead to an increased libido. The libido-boosting properties comes from citrulline, which is more concentrated in the rind as we previously mentioned. This amino acid helps to improve blood circulation and dilate blood vessels.

It May Help Reduce Blood Pressure

If you are trying to naturally lower your blood pressure, eating watermelons, rind and all, may be beneficial. A recent study revealed that obese adults with high blood pressure, who ate watermelon flesh and rinds, had an easier time controlling their blood pressure. Eating watermelon rinds alone will not work to lower blood pressure; rather, one must maintain a balanced diet, in addition to watermelon rind consumption, to create long-lasting, positive results.

Breaks Down Kidney Stones

Potassium is an essential mineral for maintaining healthy kidneys, and the watermelon rind is rich in potassium. The water content and potassium of the watermelon rind help flush out kidney stones, or other toxins that accumulate in the kidneys.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The lycopene in watermelon rind has some powerful anti-inflammatory properties. If you have arthritis pain, it may be beneficial to consume watermelon rinds to decrease joint pain or swelling in the joints. The folate content also helps to reduce your risk of colon cancer and heart attack.

The watermelon rind is rich in mineral waters that aren’t really found anywhere else. One of the best ways to consume the rind is to blend it with some fresh watermelon, fresh lime juice, and a little ice. This is the perfect summer drink to help you stay hydrated and refreshed. Believe it or not, kidney problems have become quite common in America. A balanced diet and properly filtered water are necessary for healthy kidneys, and a healthy body for that matter. Most Americans consume foods that can cause toxic build-up in the body, affecting the function of the liver, kidneys, and surrounding organs. Some of these foods even lead to the development of kidney stones.

The kidneys work to filter toxins and waste from the bloodstream. When the kidneys aren’t functioning properly, common signs can include frequent urinary tract infections, hormonal problems, water retention, back pain, exhaustion, or increased skin problems. While drinking a lot filtered water is a great way to flush out the kidneys, the following juices can greatly aid the cleansing process.

Beet Juice

This popular detoxifying juice has some amazing kidney cleansing benefits. Containing betaine, which is a powerful phytonutrient, beets and beet juice help to increase acidity in urine and clear calcium phosphate from the kidneys. Getting rid of calcium in the kidneys also helps to decrease your risk of kidney stones.

Watermelon Juice

Because watermelon is comprised of about 92% water, it helps to naturally clean out the kidneys. Watermelon is also rich in potassium, which works to eliminate sodium from the body, and melt away kidney stones in the process.

Cranberry Juice

We don’t encourage getting sweetened cranberry juices because those don’t have the powerful benefits of unsweetened, 100% pure cranberry juice. Cranberries have been known to decrease the adhesion of bacteria to the urethra and bladder, ultimately helping to fight urinary tract infections. Cranberries also help to cleanse the kidneys by lowering the amount of calcium oxalate, which contributes to kidney stones. You can also juice fresh cranberries for the best results.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice helps to increase citrate levels in urine, which helps to discourage the formation of kidney stones. To have the best kidney cleansing effects, squeeze half a lemon in a cup of warm water and drink it in the morning on an empty stomach. You can also squeeze about four or five lemons into a quart of cold water and drink that throughout the day.

Vegetable Juice

We are basically referring to a juice that is comprised of a variety of green vegetables. Great vegetables to use include zucchini, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, kale, lettuce, chard, celery, or beet greens. Loaded with antioxidants and fiber, green vegetables help to remove toxins from the body, which indirectly helps to cleanse your kidneys.

Whey, What? Why You Shouldn’t Drink Whey Protein https://www.dherbs.com/articles/general-topics/whey-what-why-you-shouldnt-drink-whey-protein/ Fri, 09 Mar 2018 00:05:36 +0000 https://www.dherbs.com/?p=77984

The post Whey, What? Why You Shouldn’t Drink Whey Protein appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Whey protein is commonly used in many protein supplements or powders. Most of the popular protein powder companies use whey in their products and people like it because some of them can taste like milkshakes. Newsflash: you shouldn’t be drinking milkshakes if you are trying to get in shape. A lot of people are attracted to whey protein because they can consume a couple types of whey even if they are lactose intolerant. What about plant-based protein powders? Those are made for people who are lactose intolerant, or for people who aren’t looking to damage their bodies.

What Is Whey?

Whey protein is obtained from the byproduct of cheese, which comes from cow’s milk. This byproduct gets filtered to remove any fat or lactose and gets turned into powder after a drying process. If you consume too much whey protein, however, you could experience one or more of the following side effects.

Side Effects

 • Loss of appetite
 • Headaches
 • Damage to kidneys
 • Osteoporosis
 • Fatigue
 • Swelling
 • Cramps
 • Diarrhea
 • Rash or hives
 • Difficulty breathing

You Could Develop Gout

A lot of people, who consume whey protein products in excess, run the risk of developing gout. There are a lot of processed amino acids, which aren’t plant based, in whey protein. If the body cannot process these amino acids, it becomes difficult for the liver and other organs to filter them out or use them efficiently. This accumulation of unprocessed amino acids can lead to uric acid build-up, and ultimately gout.

Liver Damage

The liver helps process nutrients that are absorbed by the body, in addition to it being the primary detoxification organ. Frequent consumption of whey protein supplements may overload the liver, causing damage that can inhibit its other functions.

Kidney Stones

If you already have kidney stones or kidney problems, whey is not your friend. In fact, it can worsen a preexisting kidney condition. A lot of people try to help out their kidneys by eating fibrous fruits and vegetables to counteract the effects of consuming whey protein. It’s still recommended to eat a healthy plant-based diet, but try eliminating whey and switching to a plant-based protein powder feel the difference in your health.

Packing on the Fat

Consuming whey protein supplements may inhibit you from building lean muscle. This is because many whey protein supplements contain added calories, sugars, and added fats. Some whey supplements are considered “gainers,” which people take to bulk up, but these contain extra carbohydrates. If you can’t burn off the extra carbs, then you will “gain” excess fat in the process.

The Solution???

Avoid whey products. It’s as simple as that. Fuel your body with natural foods or plant-based protein powders that will benefit it, not make it worse.

Baking soda is one of those household items that shouldn’t be reserved for one thing. It has many amazing uses and is much more than a disinfectant or skin cleanser. We aren’t here to preach about how many ways you can use baking soda (there are over 50, in case you were wondering); rather, we are here to tell you how drinking water with baking soda can improve your health.

While you may use baking soda for baking pastries, it can help you ward off many health ailments. Before we continue, it’s important to mention that you should only mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in an 8oz cup of water. Don’t drink more than two of these in one day. When you do drink this concoction, it is important to only drink it on an empty stomach. Do that and you should experience some of the following benefits.

Preventing Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, while uncomfortable, are more and more common these days, affecting about 1 in 11 Americans. They can be caused by a genetic disorder or an iron imbalance. Most people who have kidney stones are unaware, until they have to pass them. Since baking soda has an alkalizing effect on the body, it greatly lowers your risk of developing kidney stones.

Prevents Urinary Infections

If drinking this solution helps your kidneys, it goes without saying that will help protect your bladder. It is very easy for bacteria to grow in the bladder, often resulting in UTIs. Because baking soda has antiseptic properties, it can clean the urinary tract and can help reduce acidity in urine.

Alkalizing the Body

Baking soda can help alkalize the body. It also helps neutralize the pH level in the body, which makes it an inhospitable environment for diseases. Most people with acidic bodies are at a higher risk of developing cancer. Osteoporosis and arthritis are common conditions associated with high acidity levels. Drink a glass of baking soda and water on an empty stomach to change your life.

A Natural Antacid

Acid reflux affects a large number of people. Drinking water with baking soda can actually neutralize stomach acid and help remedy this problem. Additionally, baking soda helps to remove gas from the stomach, in turn preventing heartburn and bloating.

Kidney stones, while uncomfortable, are more and more common these days, affecting about 1 in 11 Americans. Although they are more prevalent in men, women can also develop kidney stones. Having kidney stones is no walk in the park. In fact, it can be very painful, so let’s take a look at what they are and naturally remedies to help treat them.

What Are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones, which are small, hard mineral deposits in the kidneys, are made up of unprocessed minerals and acid salts, which form when urine becomes over concentrated with them. They are more likely to form in those who don’t regularly drink a lot of water. It is important that kidney stones leave the body because they can cause further infection and discomfort if they remain inside.

What Causes Kidney Stones?

The leading cause of kidney stones is the lack of water or being constantly dehydrated. The body needs water to balance the pH level in the kidneys. If the person lacks water, then the uric acid in the urine cannot be diluted, making the pH level in the kidneys very acidic. The highly acidic environment helps the formation of kidney stones. They can also form if the urine has more crystal forming compounds than the fluid in the urine can dilute.

8 Natural Remedies To Help Kidney Stones

Lemon & Olive Oil

An easy and effective remedy is drinking cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mix 2oz of each together and drink it straight, following it up with a 12oz glass of distilled or alkaline water. After 30 minutes, mix the juice of half a lemon and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 12oz of distilled or alkaline water. Drink this solution. Repeat this process once every hour until your symptoms improve.

Drink Water…A Lot of It

Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more. When you have kidney stones, it is important to continually replenish the body with enough fluids to flush out the minerals and other substances that cause stones to form. If your urine is dark, then you need more water. If your urine is clear, then you are drinking enough water. It is recommended to drink 8-10 8oz glasses of water every day. You can also drink half your body weight in ounces to ensure you are properly hydrated for normal functions. If you weigh 150lbs and divide that by 2 to get 75, you should be drinking at least 75oz of water per day.

Eat Watermelon

Watermelon is a great natural remedy because the potassium in it can help treat kidney stones that are comprised of magnesium phosphates, calcium, and carbonates. Potassium is an essential mineral for proper kidney health. Additionally, watermelon contains a lot of water, which helps to flush kidney stones out of your system.

Kidney Beans

Aside from resembling the shape of kidneys, kidney beans are beneficial for most kidney problems. Remove fresh beans from inside the pods and boil them until they are tender. Strain the liquid into a pot, allow it to cool, and then strain it into a pot again. Drink this liquid a few times throughout the day to help relieve symptoms of kidney stones. Don’t keep the liquid for more than 24 hours because it will lose its healing properties. You can eat the beans in a salad or soup.

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice and pomegranate seeds may help prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones. Drink one or two servings of pomegranate juice every day to help relieve symptoms of kidney stones. Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and that can help protect the body from damaging free radicals.

Drink Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice, which is rich in chlorophyll, is a great natural remedy for treating kidney stones. You can also mix wheatgrass juice with 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of fresh basil juice for maximum healing benefits.

Change Your Diet

It can be beneficial to cut out energy drinks, soda, processed foods, alcohol, meats, and dairy products because these unhealthy foods can contribute to the growth of kidney stones. It is optimal to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to nuts and seeds, to help alkalize the body and promote overall health.
