Carving pumpkins is a great family activity to do on or before Halloween. What happens to all of those nutritious seeds that you scoop out with the pumpkin guts? If you are like most people, you probably throw them away. We urge you not to throw out pumpkin seeds because they contain valuable nutrients. Plus, they make for the perfect fall snack!

There are a few reasons why most people throw out pumpkin seeds when they carve pumpkins. First and foremost, it can be very time consuming to separate them from the pumpkin’s gooey insides. After you do that, you have to rinse them and then pat them dry before you can roast them. The second reason is that most people would rather consume a bag of chips than take the time to roast their own pumpkin seeds.

Regarding pumpkin seeds, you have a few things you can do with them after carving pumpkins. Repurpose these seeds to help reduce food waste! Continue reading to learn how to save and use pumpkin seeds.

Compost Your Seeds

If you do not want to use the pumpkin seeds at all after carving your Jack, please don’t throw them in the trash. Pumpkin seeds, and the pumpkin guts, make for great compost additions. You can add them to green material, such as lawn cuttings or other food scraps, and mix them with dry leaves or hay. The green matter helps provide nitrogen and leaves offer carbon. Don’t soak the seeds prior to composting them, though, or else they can germinate and you may end up with a rogue pumpkin plant as a result.

Preserve The Seeds To Plant Them

You can save your pumpkin seeds to grow another pumpkin by next Halloween, just as long as you dry them for long-term storage. Soak them in warm tap water to remove any pulp and then stain them through a colander. At this point, put the seeds on a dish towel and let them dry for about a day or so. Wrap them in paper towels and place them in a sealable plastic bag or airtight jar. Store them in a well-ventilated place (such as a refrigerator) and plant them in late April or May to harvest the pumpkins by September.

Transform The Seeds Into Butter

Pumpkin spice lattes take center stage during fall, but autumn is about all things squash. Spreading homemade pumpkin seed butter on warm toast is a special autumnal treat. Begin by washing your seeds after a successful carving session. Dry them and then add them to a food processor. Blend until they are smooth and creamy, adding a touch of oil and sea salt to help ease the blending process. It will take some time, but it is worth it. You can also add a drizzle of honey and cinnamon for more flavor.

Roast The Pumpkin Seeds

This is potentially the best way to utilize and enjoy pumpkin seeds. All you have to do is wash and dry the seeds and place them in a large mixing bowl once you pat them dry with some paper towels. Season them with a little olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper and mix to combine. Scatter the pumpkin seeds across a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. You can experiment with different seasonings or flavor combinations, such as cinnamon sugar pumpkin seeds, coconut aminos with white pepper and garlic powder, or create a sweet and spicy mix. Chili powder, sea salt, and fresh lime juice make for an incredible batch of roasted pumpkin seeds! To start you off right, use the following recipe.

The Perfect Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are some of the most nutrient dense seeds, so don’t get rid of them after pumpkin carving. Turn them into a healthy snack.

Trick-or-treating on Halloween is a time-honored tradition for many children. The costumes and decorations seem to get more impressive as the years go by. People become heavily invested in transforming their front lawns into clown mayhem. Others prefer to go all-out with their costumes and let other people go to the extravagant level with home decorations.

That’s all well and good and enjoyable for all, but we haven’t touched on the hot topic that all parents discuss on this unofficial holiday: candy. As a general rule, it’s wise to have a good balance of healthy food and junk food. For children, proper nutrition is integral for their growth, development, learning, and overall health. Some children have a fairly decent understanding of candy and only need a couple pieces to satiate their sweet tooth. Other kids continue to open wrappers and shove their faces full with any sweet creation they collected while trick-or-treating.

About 89% of children participate in Halloween activities, so it is important for parents to have some tricks of their own. Kids will undoubtedly wonder why they cannot have more treats, so you need a few ideas to avoid sugary meltdowns. Continue reading for some helpful information and a few surprisingly fun and enjoyable treats.

Don’t Forget Halloween Traditions

Candy is but one focal point of Halloween, and we encourage you not to forget other fun traditions. Get your children involved with decorating the house, carving pumpkins, or have them contribute to their own costume creation. That will usually inspire them to carry these traditions through the rest of their lives. Perhaps they become thrifty creative types who go all out on costumes every year!

Find Other Uses For Candy

There are many programs available if you want to donate candy to troops, sell it, or even give it away. If you do not want the candy your child collects to go to waste, you can freeze it or even bake with certain types. Since the holidays are around the corner, you may consider making gift baskets with the candy.

Set Limits

Do not let your child keep the candy in their bedroom. You should keep the candy in a secret location in the kitchen. Children are crafty and may find ways to sneakily steal some candy, especially if you keep it off limits for good. Do your best to divide the Halloween haul into small portions and put limits on the amount your child eats. That way you are not denying them their treasure; rather, you are letting them enjoy it in moderation.

Keep Your Expectations Realistic

Around the time of Halloween, children will eat sweet stuff, be it at school, at home, while visiting a shop, or after trick-or-treating. You may expect some Halloween trading to happen during school lunches. Or perhaps they enjoy a small treat after dinner. Just set expectations that your children will have some candy. Depriving them of that candy may actually cause negative outcomes.

Halloween lands on October 31, but the entire month is Halloween Safety Month. This is a good time to talk with your children about safety while they are out trick-or-treating. It is also a good idea to educate your children about portion control and the effects of sugar. To help enjoy healthier treats than candy, here are a few fun Halloween-themed recipes

Halloween Banana Ghosts And Clementine Pumpkins

A little chocolate never hurt anyone! That is especially true if you pair the chocolate with bananas and clementines. You can’t give these out to trick-or-treaters, but you can make them for your own household!

Frankenstein Avocado Toast

It’s alive! Create a monster avocado toast with this themed appetizer. It’s fun for everyone who sees it and you can get the whole family involved for assembly. Have one person assemble the different parts of Frankenstein’s monsters!

Halloween came and went, but the spooky season doesn’t die out quickly for everyone. People may want to leave decorations up, dreading the arrival of the merry, twinkling lights of the holiday season. Those same people may still want to watch horror movies, which are typically cheesy but provide the occasional jump scare. If you enjoy horror movies, health experts say that scaring yourself straight may come with some surprising mental health benefits

According to mental health experts, putting yourself in fear-inducing situations that don’t put you in danger can benefit you mentally. Haunted houses, scary video games, horror movies, etc. are terrifying for some and highly enjoyable for others. The psychology behind a person’s interest in all things horror is fascinating, though. In fact, watching horror movies goes much deeper than you might imagine. Here are a few reasons why watching scary movies may benefit your mental health

They Can Help You cope With Fear

By watching stressful or terrifying scenarios on screen, you may improve your ability to cope with similar situations in real life. A January 2021 study, for example, found that fans or horror films showed signs of more resilience and preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic. People who preferred alien invasion or zombie movies did not seem as resilient or prepared as horror movie fans in that study.

Psychologists note managing things in real life may become simpler after focusing on a horrific situation in a scary movie. Exposure-based treatment is nothing new, but it involves intentionally watching things that trigger phobias or trauma. When you repeatedly do this, you learn to tolerate the anxiety and respond more calmly when it actually happens.

They May Teach You Something About Yourself

Seeing something horrific play out in a movie may give you empowering insight about who you are as a person. If you can sit through a scary movie without freaking out, you have learned to overcome your fears, according to a 2021 study. Even if you need to leave the room and turn on the lights when the movie gets too intense, you’ve learned something about yourself. This may help you realize how you might handle a real-life situation that evokes a similar reaction. Self-knowledge can be a great thing!

They Can Give You A Feel-Good Rush

When you see a blood-curdling scene on the screen, adrenaline floods your system, activating your fight-or-flight response. This rush can elevate your heart rate and cause your muscles to tense up, which is an exhilarating experience for some. Even though you know you’re scared, you are ultimately safe, according to 2020 research. The masked murderer may break into every house on the block in the movie, but you enjoy that panicky pit in your stomach. It is thrilling, not terrifying, because you know they aren’t coming for your house. Psychologists say that this is why many people feel a mood boost after watching horror movies.

In closing, there is no evidence that confirms watching monsters or slashers on screen will have a negative effect on long-term health or mental health. For some people, though, horror movies can activate short-term anxiety. Watching a scary movie before bed may give you nightmares or make it more difficult to fall asleep. Lastly, watching horror movies on a regular basis may desensitize you to upsetting situations in real life. A study confirmed that people who frequently watched violence in movies experienced a rapid spike and drop in blood pressure when shown a violent video, suggesting a lower emotional reactivity to violence.

Whether you are young or old, it’s easy to get into the Halloween spirit. It is fun and exciting to dress up and embrace all things scary, but this day is really all about the candy. A child loves the opportunity to walk door-to-door in costume and retrieve candy from those eager enough to pass it out. Adults will walk by a bowl of candy in the office, sneakily grabbing a couple every now and again. Parents may even take some select treats out of the Halloween night’s big haul!

A good bag full of treats is hard to resist. Although the various candies can taste amazing, they often come with a cost: dental problems. A new report found that 35% of Americans have experienced candy-related dental issues. Dentists encourage people to make smarter choices when it comes to which candy they choose to enjoy. Daily or frequent consumption of candy will result in negative consequences for the teeth. According to that new report, the following dental issues may be caused by candy.

Tooth Pain

If candy causes damage to your teeth, fillings, or crowns, you can experience general tooth pain. If you bite into some candy and crack your tooth, it can be extremely painful. A cracked tooth that cracks all the way to the root or nerve can be excruciating and typically requires immediate dental work.

Chipped Or Cracked Tooth

Not all chips or cracks go all the way down to the tooth’s root. Some people easily chip their teeth on lollipops or other hard candies and don’t fix the chip for months! It is very difficult to chip a tooth and not notice! That said, you can chip part of a tooth while eating and not notice it because it may not hurt. If you don’t address the problem and don’t see a dentist soon after chipping or cracking a tooth, you run the risk of nerve exposure or infection. A cracked tooth loses the outer layer, the enamel, and a cavity can progress at a quicker rate.

Jaw Discomfort

When you chew hard or sticky candies, you put unnecessary stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). These are the two joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. If you repeatedly chew hard or sticky candies, you may lead to TMJ pain. Plus, hyperextending for opening the jaw wide to eat larger candies can increase general jaw discomfort.

Teeth Sensitivity

Bacteria in the mouth can metabolize into simple carbohydrates (sugar) and lower the overall pH in the mouth. An acidic environment can erode the enamel on your teeth, which makes them more sensitive to tooth decay. Even if the bacteria doesn’t metabolize into sugar, it can cause sensitivity to other areas without enamel. Your teeth “feel” via tiny tubules in the dentin layer of the mouth. These tubules have fluid in them, and that fluid can expand or contract in response to cold or hot liquids, sweets, or other food items. People with gum recession are typically more susceptible to tooth sensitivity.

Gum Infection

Although the report didn’t mention gum infection as a dental issue caused by candy consumption, it is a possible outcome. Little pieces of candy can get trapped between the teeth in the gums or in gum pockets, where floss cannot reach and remove the candy. If candy remains wedged under the gums or between the teeth, you can experience cavities or a periodontal abscess, which is a localized gum infection.

Damaged Fillings Or Crowns

If you eat sticky candy and you have a filling or crown, you run the risk of pulling out a piece of the filling or crown. If the candy does pull out the filling or crown, the sugar from candy can become trapped in the tooth, which can lead to tooth decay. Candy doesn’t directly harm filling or crown material in that way because decay develops differently. Candy typically infects the tooth at the margin of the filling or crown (where the tooth meets the crown or filling).

Halloween is just a couple days away, and that means that this is your last chance to pull out all the festive stops. Even though Halloween is classically unhealthy, you don’t have to succumb to the temptations in order to be festive. You can make healthy Halloween treats or themed foods like the “blood” vials in this recipe. There’s nothing wrong with adding a little health to your Halloween, right? Right???

If you love V8 juice, then you are really going to love this recipe. This is much healthier and doesn’t contain other ingredients like natural flavors, citric acid, potassium chloride, and salt. This juice is pure health, with the only ingredients being the ones you see on this ingredient list below. There is no need for processed ingredients or preservatives because this is real juice, people. It can be a little potent if you are a beginner juicer, but it is rich in a diverse mix of nutrients. Sometimes, but not always, healthy recipes don’t taste like the most amazing thing you’ve ever had. And that’s perfectly fine!

To get in the Halloween mood, this classically red juice is going to act as blood in vials at your Halloween get together. Nothing wrong with giving people a little dose of healthy, anti-inflammatory juice at your party! You can purchase plastic vials and pour the juice in them right after you make it. Just make sure that the vials sit in a bowl of ice because the juice has to remain cold; it will not taste great at room temperature.

Halloween is a time to dress in costume and stock up on sweets, or at least that’s the old adage. For many children, and enthusiastic adults, Halloween is the highlight of the year. In addition to pumpkin carving and donning costumes, many parents see their children experience sugar crashes and intense enthusiasm.

Since children enjoy all sorts of sweets, it’s very tempting for parents to also sneak a bite or two as well. In fact, many parents seem to lose control. Sometimes, it’s in a joking manor, savagely devouring the candy that your children collect during a night of trick-or-treating. Unfortunately, a bite of gooey chocolate here and a handful of sour gummies there can rack up quite a bit of calories, processed ingredients, and artificial flavors and sugars. Although it may be difficult for parents to resist entirely, it is possible to avoid letting go completely. If staying healthy during Halloween is one of your autumn goals, the following tips will be of great help.

Rethink Your Drink

It may be impossible to completely avoid a piece or two of candy during Halloween. On the night of, while your child accumulates a huge candy stash, make sure to keep tabs on your beverage intake. If you plan to indulge in some candy or sweets, it’s best to avoid sugary sodas, sweet teas, alcoholic beverages, or processed juices. Focus on drinking water, unsweetened herbal teas, or even homemade juices. If you’re feeling festive and also want to be healthy, make a themed punch. Mix sparking water with fresh orange juice and serve with fresh orange slices or blackberries.

Walk The Walk

Rather than driving the kids around from house to house (believe us…it happens), take the evening stroll with them. Enjoy the evening together and bundle up appropriately, as it may be a bit chilly, depending where you live. Walking helps to burn calories and it occupies the mind, so you’ll be less likely to mindlessly gorge on candy

Have A Themed Party With Games Instead Of Sweets

A Halloween party can be a wonderfully festive event. The challenge of having a Halloween party is staying on the healthy path. With sweets all over the place, most people focus on food instead of fun activities. Flip the script this year and center the party around festive fall activities. A pumpkin carving station, costume contest, musical chairs, bobbing for apples, or a pumpkin hunt are excellent activities for children. Children love games and parents love when their children tire out instead of getting hopped up on sugar!

Balance Is Everything

Remember, Halloween is only one day in the year. This isn’t an excuse to throw away dietary rules, but it is a reminder that balance helps create healthy eating habits. Many people make the mistake of just letting children have a free for all with the candy they collect while trick-or-treating. Naturally, children will always have room for dessert, especially if they worked hard to get it by walking the neighborhood. One idea is to prepare and enjoy a healthy, filling meal right before trick-or-treating. Additionally, serve a few healthy snacks upon returning home before you bring out the candy collection. Limit each child to five pieces of candy or so they don’t get too crazy.

Give Away Candy You Don’t Like

It’s a common practice to buy candy to give out to trick-or-treaters. It’s enjoyable to see the fun and creative costumes people come up with. One of the easiest ways to eat too much candy is by buying candy that you enjoy. Buy a bag of candy that you and your children cannot stand to eat and give it away. You’ll be less tempted by that candy while it’s in your house.

Halloween has either been canceled, restricted, or modified in recent years as a result of COVID-19. Parties, events, and the classic trick-or-treating are now back in full swing, and people can’t wait to get their spooky on. Whether you visit pumpkin patches or walk home with a giant bucket of candy after trick-or-treating with the kids, you can easily veer off the healthy path.

Chances are, you aren’t getting apple slices with almond butter in place of chocolate bars and sour candies. And most people just buy candy to have in the house or the office now, so these treats are more accessible than ever. The Halloween aisle at grocery stores is almost too tempting, and it can be hard to resist if you or your child has a sweet tooth. Now, candy shouldn’t be off limits; rather, it should be a treat that you enjoy in a mindful way. Sit down, put the sweet on the plate, and take your time to eat and enjoy it. When you stuff your face with candy, you overload the body with sugar and you don’t really enjoy the eating process. The following tips, however, can help you make this trick-or-treating season a little healthier

Not All Sugars Are Created Equal

Added sugars are much different from natural sugars that exist in whole foods. Food manufacturers will add sugars to foods, even the ones that are not particularly sweet. Added sugars help to satisfy your taste buds and keep you coming back for more. Honey, brown or white sugar, and high fructose corn syrup are examples of unnatural sugars in processed foods. Natural sugars occur in whole foods like fruit, and they are beneficial for your health. If you don’t have pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, you don’t have to worry about natural sugars in whole foods. As for added sugars, you should limit your intake to less than 10% of your daily calories. That is the American Heart Association’s recommendation for maintaining a healthy body.

Take A Break From The Sauce

Although trick-or-treating may not be a thing for adults, the Halloween fun doesn’t stop when you reach adolescence. Many adults live for Halloween and the many festivities that are spooky-themed. For many adults, though, Halloween events and parties typically involve a lot of alcoholic beverages. Oftentimes, there is a cauldron of alcoholic punch or Halloween-inspired cocktails that entice you based on looks alone. Excessive drinking can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes, which can cause dehydration and fatigue. Alcohol is also a source of empty calories, so all that drinking contributes to weight gain. Plus, most Halloween-themed cocktails are high in sugar, which can wreck your gut and make hangovers worse. Take a break from the sauce or limit your consumption, making water or sparkling waters your replacement beverages.

Get Creative With Scary-Themed Healthy Foods

You can gain a lot of inspiration for art projects and recipes on Pinterest, especially for Halloween decor and recipes. There are many snacks and treats that are both spooky and healthy because they are made from whole foods with natural sugars. You can always transform healthy fruits and vegetables in a way that satisfies your sweet tooth. Take some time to whip up your own festive foods for Halloween parties by clicking here

Beware Of Overeating Sugar

It’s one of the easiest things to do, especially for children after coming home with a large amount of candy on Halloween. In the interest of health, limit yourself and your children from gorging on candy after trick-or-treating. Beware of getting tricked into a sugar rush! When you eat too many high-sugar foods, you increase the risk of obesity and weight gain, both of which are precursors to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Even if a sugar rush isn’t part of your daily life, one day of unusually high sugar intake can cause a short-term spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. This can lead to increased cravings, mood swings, dips in energy, and acute inflammation. If you or your children struggle with pacing your sugar intake, opt for treats that take longer to eat, for example, lollipops.

Protect Your Teeth By Avoiding Certain Candies

Sugary snacks are loaded with preservatives, added sugars, and artificial colors and flavors that can ruin your blood sugar levels and your teeth. Eating a lot of candy in one sitting can make your next trip to the dentist more like a horror flick than a regular checkup. Sour candy is one of the major culprits when it comes to tooth decay. The highly acidic nature of these candies makes it easy for them to erode tooth enamel. Try to limit your consumption of gummy candies and sour candies because these can cause serious tooth problems. Plus, they can be very difficult to get out of your teeth, even if you floss and brush thoroughly.

Autumn 2020 seems like it was here just the other day. Masks were mainstream and the scariest part of Halloween was potential COVID-19 infection. For that reason, that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) advised against door-to-door trick-or-treating. With climbing vaccination rates and reduced COVID-19 cases, could trick-or-treating be safe this year?

Various health experts don’t advise gathering in large crowds this year, but they do expect kids to enjoy some semblance of normalcy this Halloween. In fact, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that children can enjoy a safe, fun Halloween this year. That means one thing and one thing only: ready your buckets because trick-or-treating is on!

Given that trick-or-treating is an outdoor activity and many children over the age of 12 are getting vaccinated, Fauci considers it a safe activity. Children under the age of 12 already spend time together on the playground and in the classroom at school. Trick-or-treating doesn’t pose an additional risk to them, according to hygienists and clinical professors. There is one variable, however, and it’s the door-to-door interaction with strangers. Nobody can know how safe other people are, but experts want to assure people that being outside significantly reduces the rate of infection. Plus, there are several steps you can take to stay safe while collecting candy.

Avoid Indoor Trick-Or-Treating

In colder areas of the country, it’s common for parents to take children to trick-or-treat in malls, or indoors at an apartment building. The reality is that these places do not have great ventilation, which puts younger children, or the unvaccinated people, at risk. To limit your risk of COVID-19, it’s best to focus your efforts on outdoor candy collection. If the only option is to trick-or-treat indoors, it’s best to wear a mask.

Keep The Mask On

The great thing about Halloween costumes is that many come with masks! The only downside is that costume masks do not replace masks with three to five layers of fabric. Costume masks are not designed to limit the spread of viral particles. Parents can, however, get creative and make a face mask a part of a child’s costume. Surgeon costumes, anyone? It’s also possible for children to wear masks under their costume masks, but parents should make sure children can breathe comfortably.

Inspect Treat Before Indulging

It’s hard to resist a bag or bucket full of candy when you are a child. Some adults have that same problem! Try to feed your child(ren) a large meal before you venture out to trick-or-treat in order to reduce the urge to savagely consume candy. Upon arriving home from a successful night, discard any candies that have torn packaging, or ones that don’t have a seal. As a general safety measure unrelated to COVID-19, inspect labels if your child suffers from food allergies

Keep Hands Clean

Between railings, fences, candy, and the other things kids may come in contact with on Halloween, it’s important to keep hands clean. Since you’ll be out with children away from soap and water, keep hand sanitizer at the ready. It’s not necessary to sanitize after every house you visit, but every once in a while is beneficial. The risk of contracting COVID-19 via candy wrappers is very low, but keeping hands clean decreases the risk even further. Additionally, experts advise that children wash their hands before they eat some of the candy they picked. This reduces the risk of ingesting any germs they picked up while trick-or-treating. You don’t have to quarantine the candy, by the way.
