If you have an oral piercing, you have to be extra attentive with your oral care. In addition to brushing and flossing, follow oral piercing cleaning instructions to reduce the risk of infection or gum recession.

You Brush Too Hard

Brushing regularly is a must for optimal oral health, but being overzealous with your brushing can do more harm than good. Aggressive brushing can irritate gum tissue, which causes inflammation that can lead to gum recession over time. If you have sensitive gums, consider getting a soft- or medium-bristle toothbrush to be more gentle on your gums. Always brush your teeth twice per day, but remember to be gentle on your teeth. Oil pulling is a traditional Indian therapy that uses cold pressed sesame seed oil or sunflower seed oil in the mouth to pull toxins from the gums. The oil can be refined oil and doesn’t have to be organic unless you simply choose for your oil to be organic.

Oil therapy is helpful in improving the health of the mouth and the whole body. According to Ayurvedic text, oil pulling also can help to alleviate chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma. Other studies suggest the practice could be beneficial in reducing oral plaque, halitosis and gingivitis.

Oil Pulling Procedure

Oil pulling begins by adding one to two tablespoons of either sunflower oil or sesame seed oil to the mouth and swishing the solution. It is best to move the oil in your mouth slowly like you would mouthwash.

Continue this for approximately 15-20 minutes. This time may seem extensive. If in the beginning you are unable to keep the solution in your mouth for that period of time, aim for time minutes as a starting point and increase your time from there.

After a little time, the oil may being to feel foamy in your mouth. This is very normal. The oil mixed with the saliva creates a slightly foamy texture.

Once you have finished swishing the oil in your mouth, spit the oil out into your sink and run water to flush the sink out.

Next, the oral cavity must be rinsed. Rinse thoroughly with water. You may also use your fingers or a cloth towel to clean your teeth. Brushing your teeth with all-natural toothpaste is another option.

After you have brushed or rinsed your mouth, try gargling with a natural hydrogen peroxide-based mouthwash. After this step, clean your tongue with a stainless steel tongue cleaner.

The therapy is to be performed every morning before breakfast or before you eat. The oil pulling must be performed on an empty stomach which is why morning time is best.

The teeth and gums will feel healthy and restored after performing an oil pulling therapy.

This is a short question that requires a long answer!

Generally, gums recede because of poor oral hygiene, degenerative diseases, poor nutrition, clenching and or grinding your teeth, poor occlusion (the way your teeth come together) and / or a combination of all these. Stress plays a huge role in this. Stress can cause degeneration. By saying this I mean that it can lower your immune system, which can result in your gums reacting more to plaque (the bacterial film that accumulates on your teeth until it is removed). Your repair mechanisms become compromised. People tend to clench more at their jobs, in thought, or in their sleep when they are under stress.

Ways to care for your gums include impeccable home care. Brush your teeth thoroughly with a soft tooth brush and floss them. Getting correct instructions on how to brush and floss is important. Your hygienist should show you how to do this and actually have you do it while you are at the office. I know people who spend a great deal of time on their teeth yet they are not effective. Getting correct instructions is a must. Being able to duplicate the technique is imperative. Practice, practice, practice while you have your coach present!

Vitamins like B complex and Vitamin C are important. A muscle relaxing splint similar to a night guard can be very helpful to take the “load” of your teeth at night when you uncontrollably clench and grind. This is an appliance that your general dentist can make for you. I do not advise you to purchase a night guard over the counter as they are soft and you will still clench on them. You may take the load of your teeth, but you increase the load on your jaw joint with these over the counter appliances.

Regular professional cleanings are also essential. Keep in mind that even having your teeth cleaned twice a year may not be enough to control your inflammation. It takes about 90 days for the micro organisms to multiply sufficiently to cause tissue breakdown in deep pockets. Deep pockets are the spaces between your tooth and your gum that are 4 or more millimeters deep. Your hygienist or dentist will measure your pockets to see if any 4 mm. spaces exist. If so they will recommend that you get a professional treatment about every 90 days or 3 months. If you learn and practice these recommendations it can be easy and rewarding. Bleeding gums are the easiest way for bacteria to get into your blood stream, and play havoc to your health. It is worth your while to learn how to care for your teeth and gums, and this will extend your life!
