An analytics survey found that a record 200.5 million U.S. adults plan to watch the big game. The game is important to 44% of viewers, with the halftime show being most important to 19% of viewers. Commercials interest 18% of viewers, and some people bet more on commercials than the actual game!

It’s hard to claim the very best guacamole, but here we are doing just that. It is very simple to make and uses high quality ingredients. All you need is onion, cilantro, avocado, tomato, jalapeño pepper, lime juice, garlic, and sea salt. The last, and potentially most important, thing you need is a molcajete or mortar and pestle. Ideally, use a molcajete because it is the best kitchen tool for amazing guacamole.

A molcajete is similar to a mortar and pestle, but it’s just better. It has been used by people in the landmass now known as Mexico for thousands of years. Traditionally, a molcajete was made from volcanic rock or stone, and it consists of a bowl that stands on three legs. It comes with a tapered instrument that you hold and grind or mash whatever is in the bowl. The naturally textured surface of the bowl can help you turn whole ingredients into a smooth mixture. As you grind them into a paste, they release flavorful compounds and aromas along the way.

The key to making the best guacamole is that you have to grind the garlic and jalapeño into a paste. You can then add the chopped avocado and continue to smash it into a chunky dip. Once you add the diced onion, tomatoes, and cilantro, you can simply fold them into the guacamole with a large spoon. You don’t want to mash those ingredients in with the avocados. The reason for that is because the diced texture of those ingredients beautifully complements the smooth avocado mixture. Guacamole is one of the tastiest and most filling dips in existence. It’s similar to hummus in that way, but hummus is not raw vegan because it contains cooked chickpeas. Guacamole contains beneficial fats that may help reduce inflammation, encourage heart health, and keep you full to prevent future cravings. We are, of course, referring to the monounsaturated fats in avocados, which may assist with lowering bad cholesterol and protecting against cognitive decline.

Different people have their own signature spin that they put on guacamole. Some enjoy a spicy flavor, so they add diced serrano peppers and a few dashes of cayenne. Others enjoy notes of sweetness, so they chop up mango and incorporate it into the mix. You can mash the avocado for a rich, creamy guacamole, or you can keep it chunky and avoid mashing it. When you don’t mash the avocado and add lime, onion, cilantro, and tomatoes, it almost becomes a chunky pico de gallo with avocados.

For this recipe, mashing the avocado is encouraged. To yield an even mash, do your best to choose ripe avocados. Although many people do the feel test to see if avocados are ripe, there’s an easier way to determine ripeness. The little “nipple” on top of the avocado, where the fruit attached to the tree, will come off easily if the avocado is ripe. If it does not come off easily, then your avocado is not ready. You should be able to see the exposed green avocado flesh when you pop off that “nipple.” Oh, and don’t worry about tasting the kale. The other flavors are so powerful and delicious that you won’t even notice it!
