It’s very easy to spend lots of money on skin care products. That is especially true when products say that they can turn back the hands of time and make your skin look 20 years younger. These products state that your skin will glow like never before! Unfortunately, people get lured in by these buzzwords, use the products, and don’t experience the advertised benefits.

What if we told you that you could save some money and make y4our own face serum that has anti-aging properties. When you make your own serum, you know exactly what goes into it. There are no problematic fragrances or added ingredients that detract from the primary ingredients. When you make your own serum, you have the freedom to customize ingredients based on your skin type. For example, if the carrier oil in this recipe doesn’t work for you, swap it out for one that does. The same can be said for the essential oils.

As a quick note, customizing your blend is very doable, but we recommend that you keep the same ratios for a two-ounce bottle. You can increase the amount of essential oils by a few drops or so, but be mindful with your use of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil can cause skin irritation, so do a small patch test on your arm or something to ensure that you don’t have a negative reaction.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is primarily known for nourishing dry, dull skin, but it may benefit people with acne-prone skin as well. Dermatologists consider argan oil to be non-comedogenic, so it will not leave the skin feeling greasy. It is safe and beneficial for all skin types. The rich antioxidant content helps protect the skin from environmental damage. Argan oil contains vitamin E and polyphenols, which help soften the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Argan oil contains fatty acids, including oleic and linoleic acids, which exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. Not only does that help soothe irritated skin, but it also works to reduce the appearance of blemishes. Another reason why argan oil is great for all skin types is because of the moisturizing properties. People with oily skin will find that it is lightweight, while those with dry skin will find that it makes skin feel soft, supple, and highly moisturized.

Rosehip Oil

Is rosehip oil the universal skin savior? Some say it is, but we’ll let you be the judge of that. Rosehip oil contains a lot of omega 3, 6, 7, and 9 fatty acids, all of which are necessary for skin repair and regeneration. Rosehip oil may help reduce the appearance of blemishes and scars and may work to brighten overall skin tone. Similar to argan oil, rosehip oil is beneficial for all skin types, even the most sensitive.

If dryness is your concern, rosehip oil may do the trick! Various creams may provide hydration, but rosehip oil goes above and beyond by adding moisture and sealing it in too. The fatty acids in rosehip oil help the skin retain water for longer, which helps to keep it soft and supple. Finally, rosehip oil has been described as a gentle alternative to retinol. Rosehip oil contains a small amount of vitamin A, which gives it the regenerative properties. Working with the other antioxidants, rosehip oil may help reduce sagging skin and fine lines.

DIY Face Serum

Ingredients:

  • 2-ounce amber glass bottle with dropper
  • 20 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops rose essential oil
  • Argan oil
  • Rosehip oil

Instructions:

  • Add the essential oils to the glass bottle and fill the bottle two-thirds of the way with argan oil.
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with rosehip oil, screw on the lid, and shake well to combine.
  • It is best to apply this serum at night before bed. Add a dime-size amount to your palms and gently apply all over your face, but be careful to avoid the eye area.

Can we safely call this the “Superhero Sipper” smoothie? Well, the great thing is that we don’t need to ask for permission to praise the healthy powers that fruits and vegetables offer! This green smoothie is a refreshing blend of cucumber, apple, kale, ginger, mint, and lime, and it will save the day…and potentially your health. This incredible combination of ingredients contains some impressive health benefits that will make you feel like a superhero.

A Little About The Ingredients

  • Persian cucumber: These cucumbers are crunchy and crisp, providing lots of water to help you replenish bodily fluids. It also contains vitamin C, which works to enhance the health of your skin.
  • Kale: The mighty, powerful super green goddess of the smoothie world. Kale is naturally rich in iron, protein, vitamin K, folate, magnesium, and other antioxidants that help contribute to glowing skin and better immune function. Just make sure that you discard the thicker stems, otherwise your smoothie will have a bitter taste.
  • Apple: For a slightly tart yet sweet flavor, we recommend that you choose a Granny Smith apple, but you can opt for the apple of your choice, especially if you have one on hand already. Apples provide lots of fiber, which helps to keep the digestive system functioning smoothly. It also helps you stay full between meals.
  • Ginger: Offering a spicy kick that’ll get your heart pumping and your metabolism fired up, ginger makes for a wonderful addition to this smoothie. Exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, ginger may help reduce inflammation and pain in the body.
  • Lime: This is the zesty zinger that adds a burst of citrus to this smoothie. Believe it or not, fresh lime juice helps promote alkalinity within the body, despite containing citric acid. Lime juice is rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants that may help fight off colds and infections.

]]>

The skin can take a beating during the winter, and many people experience excessive dryness as a result. Crisp wind, dry and cold air, and heat from furnaces create an unfriendly environment for the skin. You may notice flakier, drier skin that’s prone to itchiness as the temperatures drop. And it seems that all the lotion in the world can’t get rid of the dryness!

Just like any other system or organ in the body, the skin requires nutrients that help it grow and repair on a cellular level. When you eat the right foods or focus on the right nutrients, you can help rebuild the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF). This is a protective barrier that seals in moisture and protects the skin from environmental damage. It’s also beneficial to focus on water-rich foods that help hydrate the skin from within.

We aren’t saying that your skin care routine is ineffective or outdated; rather, it may simply need a little enhancement. For example, using a moisturizer may prevent transepidermal water loss, but this won’t matter if the skin’s moisture barrier is weak. Attack the problem from all angles and your skin will be hydrated, moisturized, and supple before you know it. Continue reading to learn about the nutrients that will help hydrate the skin during the winter

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Many dermatologists recommend people to eat avocado, chia seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish if they want glowing skin. The reason for this is because these foods contain omega-3 fatty acids, which help to improve the skin’s hydration. Omega-3s are an integral component of the skin’s lipid content, and they work to improve the barrier function. If the barrier is working properly, the skin retains more moisture and helps to keep irritants out. Additionally, omega-3s may support the skin by way of hydration and antioxidant photoprotection.

Vitamin A

During the fall and winter months, it’s very easy to get your daily dose of vitamin A. Many seasonal produce items are naturally rich in this nutrient. Winter squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, or even collard greens and kale are excellent sources of vitamin A. Not only does vitamin A help to maintain skin elasticity, but it also works to fight inflammation, which can contribute to dry skin during the winter

Antioxidants

You can include vitamins A, C, E, and other phytonutrients in this category. Antioxidants work to combat free radicals, which can impair the skin’s barrier function and increase the risk of transepidermal water loss. Eating a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables can provide you with enough antioxidants to keep the skin hydrated. Astaxanthin, a unique phytonutrient, helps to improve skin elasticity and moisture levels. It may also protect the skin’s collagen layer. Other antioxidants may work to protect the skin from UVB rays and make positive changes to skin microbiome.

Water-Rich Foods

In addition to drinking water every day, it can help to consume foods with high water content. Roughly 20% of the body’s water intake comes from diet, specifically fruits and vegetables. These foods also offer beneficial antioxidants and nutrients that help protect the skin barrier. Water helps to transport nutrients to your cells, while simultaneously getting rid of toxins. Keeping cells plump and healthy also discourages dry or dehydrated skin. Watermelon, cantaloupe, celery, lettuce, cucumber, radishes, and tomatoes are excellent water-rich produce items.

Vitamin D

According to dermatologists, it’s easy for the skin to dry out if you are deficient in vitamin D, which is a fat-soluble vitamin. Vitamin D actually triggers receptors that help promote the formation of the skin barrier. Food items provide a low amount of vitamin D, so a supplement may be necessary. Consult with your doctor to determine the correct dosage for your body. As a general note, it’s often better to take a smaller dose every day, as opposed to a larger dose once a week.

If you want your skin to glow, you have to treat it right. The matcha clay face mask in this article is a simple, all-natural mask that works to detoxify the skin. Not only does that help remove impurities from your pores, but it also helps the skin look more radiant. Can you go wrong with nourishing ingredients like matcha, French green claw, kaolin clay, honey powder, aloe vera powder, and more?

This face mask helps to absorb excess oil and deep clean the skin. Matcha, spirulina, and goat milk powder help to calm and revive the skin with nourishing vitamins and minerals. Other ingredients help trap moisture into the skin and give it an immediate glow. Whether you have acne prone skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, or dry skin, this mask is highly suitable. Continue reading to learn about some of the standout ingredients.

Aloe Vera Gel Powder

Aloe vera gel is a natural humectant, which attracts moisture from the air and supplies it to your skin. By deeply moisturizing the skin, you strengthen your skin’s elasticity, helping it appear smoother and more supple. If you notice that facial skin feels dry, this is an ingredient your skin requires.

Spirulina Powder

Spirulina is a notable superfood that provides the body with protein, thiamin, copper, niacin, iron, and more. It is also a great source of antioxidants, which help contribute to a fresh, clear complexion. Spirulina helps nourish the skin, promoting cell growth and regeneration with its amino acid content.

Matcha Powder

Made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, matcha exhibits impressive antioxidant activity. The leaves dry naturally, so no heating is involved, which better preserves their nutrients. Matcha also offers antibacterial and antibiotic properties, which help rejuvenate skin cells, promote smooth skin, and reduce fine lines.

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin clay has a fine texture, so it is very gentle on the skin. It is less absorbing than French green clay, which we will discuss next. If your skin is dry or sensitive, double the amount of kaolin clay and omit the French green clay from this recipe.

French Green Clay

Rich in trace minerals, French green clay works to nourish the skin, clear impurities, and absorb excess oils. Studies show that this clay benefits people with acne because it helps to remove blackheads and germs in pores. It also tightens pores and promotes overall skin rejuvenation. The green color is attributed to the centuries-old plant matter, from which French green clay is made. It also contains iron oxide, which helps draw out toxins from the skin.

Honey Powder

Honey exhibits antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help soothe inflammation. The antioxidants in honey support cell regeneration and strengthen the skin. Just like aloe vera, honey is a natural humectant, so it helps trap moisture into the skin and add shine to your complexion.

DIY Matcha Clay Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1.4 ounces French green clay
  • 1.4 ounces kaolin clay
  • 0.7 ounces goat milk powder
  • 0.35 ounces matcha powder
  • 0.35 ounces honey powder
  • 0.17 ounces spirulina powder
  • 0.04 ounces aloe vera gel powder
  • 0.02 ounces allantoin

  • When ready to use, put two teaspoons of the powder into a small mixing bowl and stir in one teaspoon of water. Continue stirring until you achieve a smooth paste.
  • Using a brush or spatula, apply the mask to your face, making sure to avoid the lips, hairline, eyes, and eyebrows.

For many mortals, achieving glowing skin is like finding the fountain of youth. Some people are lucky enough to possess the good genes for ageless skin, while others have 11-step skin care rituals nightly. Although creams, oils, lotions, toners, cleansers, and more can benefit and clarify your skin, simple daily habits can provide your skin the nutrients it needs.

Commercials that advertise overpriced miracle creams and serums are enticing, but they may not be the answer. The truth is that glowing skin begins from within. What we mean by that is that certain lifestyle habits provide your skin with nutrients internally. External skin care still has a place in your life, but a healthier inside can make your skin glow on the outside. Don’t give up exfoliating and moisturizing; rather, consider the following habits to contribute to more beautiful skin.

Exercise

Daily exercise can benefit several bodily organs and systems, primarily because it gets the heart pumping, which improves circulation. All of the body’s cells and tissues need oxygen to thrive. Improving circulation as a result of exercise can provide skin cells with the nutrients they need for cell turnover and growth. Without proper circulation, the skin can appear dull because the body cannot get rid of old, dead skin cells. Optimal circulation also helps the body eliminate toxins, which can hold your skin back from looking as healthy as possible.

Get Enough Sleep

Beauty sleep is a real thing and anyone who says otherwise isn’t sleeping enough. The body requires sleep to heal and recover, and to help organs function properly. Since the skin is the largest organ in the body, it needs sleep to aid all the metabolic work it does. That’s why lack of sleep can result in puffy skin, bags, and dark circles under the eyes. Sleep deprivation causes the body to produce more cortisol, the stress hormone, which can cause inflammation on the skin that can lead to lumps and breakages.

Wash Your Pillowcases

On the topic of sleep, we feel the need to state a fact that should be common knowledge: wash your pillowcases frequently. Pillowcases collect dirt, oil, dead skin, and more every couple days. Because pillowcases remain in contact with your face for a long period of time, the built-up gunk can irritate the skin, leading to breakages. For this reason, it’s best to change your pillowcases every few days.

Stay Hydrated

Before you slather on your hydrating creams and serums, be sure to hydrate your skin from the inside out. Drinking enough water can ensure proper waste elimination, support the metabolism, and promote glowing skin. Ideally, you should drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day to sufficiently hydrate the body. You can also obtain some of this water via hydrating foods. You can also drink herbal teas to promote hydration, but try to avoid too much sugar and caffeine, as caffeine pulls water out of the skin and sugar increases inflammation.

Exfoliate Once A Week

Exfoliation is an integral step towards glowing skin, but doing it too much can do more harm than good. When you exfoliate, you remove dead skin cells and dirt that can clog your pores and make the skin appear dull. Exfoliating too much, however, can strip the skin of beneficial oils that make it look radiant. The skin always produces new skin cells and it needs help shedding the old dead cells. Use a gentle exfoliator that also contains moisturizing ingredients. You can click here for a great DIY facial exfoliating recipe.

Reduce Stress

As mentioned earlier in this article, the accumulation of cortisol, the stress hormone, can cause inflammation on the skin. When the body is in a constant state of stress, blood flow is directed to skeletal muscles and the heart prepares to fight or flight. That means that the skin doesn’t receive the vital nutrients and oxygen that contribute to supple, glowing skin. That’s why chronically stressed individuals look drained and older. Take the time to do yoga, practice meditation, engage in breathing exercises, or take a bubble bath to reduce stress levels. Your skin will be able to recover, receive adequate circulation, and appear bright again.

Don’t Use Products Made For The Wrong Skin Type

If you want to help your skin glow, you need to use skin care products that are made for your skin type. If you have a particular skin concern, you have to use products that cater to that issue. Using the wrong products can not only disrupt the skin’s moisture barrier, but also increase the risk of dullness and dryness. Since you don’t want the skin to look older than it should, find the products that are suitable for your skin type. When in doubt, ask for help because it’s better to invest in the right products for your skin than to use products that do more harm than good.

While people are busy muddling cucumbers in cocktails, you can take advantage of their beauty benefits. Cucumbers belong to the gourd family, which is one of nature’s best sources of anti-inflammatory botanicals for topical use. The amino acids and minerals in cucumbers help to regenerate skin cells, which contributes to tighter, firmer skin. Plus, cucumbers exhibit natural antibacterial and cooling properties that may relieve swelling after topical application.

How do you harness the healing powers of this common fruit? Yes, cucumber is technically a fruit, in case you didn’t know that. One of the easiest ways to reap cucumber’s beauty benefits is by applying them on the skin. Combine cucumbers with other ingredients to help reduce acne, accelerate recovery after sunburn, and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Below, you’ll find the best cucumber face mask recipes and how to make them. We hope you find one or more that is just right for your skin type.

De-Puff With Cucumber (Eye)-ce Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 tomato
  • 1/4 cucumber
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley

Instructions:

  • Once you do that, apply the blended mixture to your face and neck, allowing it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Follow this with a moisturizer.
  • Keep any leftovers in the fridge and use within seven days.

Mashed Cucumber Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cucumber

Instructions:

  • Add the cucumber to a blender or food processor and blend until slightly chunky. You don’t want a smooth puree. Alternatively, you can mash the cucumber with a fork.
  • Wash your face and neck with warm water and an oil-free cleanser to remove any dirt from your pores.
  • Apply the cucumber mash to your face and neck and allow it to sit for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Cucumber And Yogurt Face Mask

Cucumber and yogurt may be the super, skin-enhancing duo that you need to optimize skin health. This mask may help tighten pores, reduce redness or irritation, enhance moisture content in the skin, and decrease swelling or inflammation.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt

Instructions:

  • Place the cucumber in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
Transfer the cucumber pulp to a mixing bowl and whisk it with the yogurt. Mix well until evenly incorporated.
  • Wash your face and neck with an oil-free cleanser to remove any dirt from your pores.
  • Spread the cucumber mixture into an even layer on your face and neck. Allow it to sit on the skin for 15 minutes and then rinse away with warm water and a washcloth.
  • Splash cool water on your skin to close your pores and then pat dry with a clean towel.

Some people are constantly at war with their skin. Those with dry skin face challenges that others don’t, and it is difficult to find the right products that moisturize and exfoliate gently. The average face wash may cause extra dryness and certain moisturizers may cause excess oil production. Where is the happy medium? Well, it may be the sugar scrub recipe in this article.

Before we continue, it’s important to note that some people do not encourage the use of sugar scrubs on facial skin. Exfoliation does play a key role in cleaning out pores and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, sugar crystals can be too abrasive for people that have sensitive skin, leading to micro tears in the skin. The sugar scrub may have more benefits on other areas of the body.

If you have sensitive skin, you can experiment with this sugar scrub in a small area to see how it affects your skin. If you find that it is too intense for your facial skin, consider experimenting with other exfoliating alternatives that help get rid of dead skin cells. Keep in mind that the scrub in this recipe does have ingredients that work to nourish and moisturize the skin. Read on to learn more about them.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is essentially fat extracted from raw coconuts or dried coconut flakes. As a result, coconut oil has valuable emollient properties that are extremely beneficial for certain sky types, for example, those with dry or dry-to-normal skin. The nourishing fatty acids may help hydrate and protect the skin from environmental threats. These acids include lauric acid, which exhibits antibacterial properties, and linoleic acid, which helps the skin retain moisture. People with dry or flaky skin may have better success moisturizing with coconut oil than traditional moisturizers. Additionally, coconut oil works to reduce inflammation and encourage collagen production, which can help your facial skin maintain firmness and elasticity. One thing to note is that if you have acne prone skin, you may not want to use coconut oil, as it can clog pores and lead to acne development.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can help benefit the skin in myriad ways, and it may even improve symptoms of chronic skin conditions. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in tea tree oil may help to fight acne, or the redness associated with it. One study involved 14 participants with acne and they used tea tree oil with a carrier oil twice per day for 12 weeks. Researchers found that tea tree oil helped reduce the total number of acne lesions. The ability to decrease inflammation may also relieve dryness that results from irritation.

Sugar

Sugar is an excellent exfoliator, but not for every skin type. It works to remove dead skin cells and can help give the skin a natural glow by cleaning out pores. Some studies suggest that the use of sugar scrubs may reduce early signs of aging. Sugar does not allow toxins to attack your skin cells, ultimately slowing down the aging process. Regular granulated sugar tends to work well, but brown sugar may be better for sensitive skin because it is the finest and least abrasive.

It’s safe to say that most people have a nighttime skin care routine. Perhaps there is some combination of a cleanser or scrub, moisturizer, spot treatment, or mask included in this routine. Some nighttime face creams or oils just don’t seem to cut it, though. That means that you wake up with moisturized pillows and unnaturally dry skin. So how do you retain moisture and wake up with hydrated, glowing skin?

Overnight face masks, also called sleeping masks, can help your skin retain moisture while you sleep. The thicker consistency makes it so the mask actually stays in place overnight. The best part is that the recipe is fragrance-free and made with ingredients that don’t irritate the skin. If you have sensitive skin, these ingredients won’t aggravate it. Additionally, it doesn’t contain lemon juice, milk tomatoes, turmeric, or other food ingredients, so it won’t stain your bedding. To avoid oil stains, you may want to cover your pillow with a soft towel while you sleep, or use a pillowcase that you don’t mind getting oil on.

Squalane Oil

What is squalane oil and how does it benefit your skin? Squalene is a natural lipid that your skin cells produce, but this production slows with age. It is a natural moisturizer that peaks in production during your 20s and 30s, which is why skin tends to get dryer as you get older. Squalane is a saturated byproduct of squalene oil, a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon. Squalane is the derivative of squalene, and it benefits the hair, skin, and nails because the body knows how to use it. When you apply it topically, squalane oil can help boost hydration to make the skin look more vibrant and youthful. There are antioxidants in squalane that also help to fight free radicals, which contribute to premature signs of aging. Regular use may also help boost collagen production, resulting in firmer skin.

Vitamin E Oil

The body needs vitamin E to support optimal immune function, as it helps the body’s cells regenerate. It’s a natural antioxidant that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great nutrient for skin care. Vitamin E oil is a powerful anti-aging treatment that you can use on your face, as well as other areas of the skin. It does have a thicker consistency, which is why beauty experts encourage you to apply it before bed. This gives your skin time to fully absorb the oil. When you condition your skin with vitamin E oil overnight, you help to increase hydration and reduce inflammation. Together, those effects help your skin appear younger.

Beeswax

There are many reasons why you should use beeswax topically on the skin. In fact, the use of beeswax in skin care regimens dates back to the times of the Ancient Egyptians. Beeswax contains antibacterial agents, which help to accelerate the healing of burns and small wounds. It may also be beneficial for certain skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. Beeswax is also a fabulous emollient, which helps to soften dry, rough, or flakey skin. Emollients and moisturizers are not the same thing, even though people think they are. Emollients like beeswax cover the skin with a thin, protective layer that helps to trap in moisture, so that your skin can retain it for much longer.

DIY Overnight Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 1/2 cup squalane oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions:

  • In the top of a small double boiler over medium-low heat, melt the beeswax pellet. Stir frequently to break up any lumps.
  • Once the beeswax is melted, reduce the heat to low and pour in the squalane oil. Continue stirring in case the beeswax starts to clump.
  • Completely melt the mixture and then remove it from heat, allowing it to cool for a few minutes before adding the vitamin E. Mix to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into a cosmetic mason jar, or other glass container that you have. Leave at room temperature so the mixture can solidify. Screw on the lid and store in a cool, dry place.
  • When ready to use, apply a small amount to your face before bed. Wash your face in the morning and pat dry.
