Should the holidays be referred to as “the over-indulgent days?” There’s something about the holidays that makes people want to eat. Whether it’s an elaborate charcuterie, a plate of meat and carbs, or fudgy squares and rum balls, food gets put away during the holidays. People like to justify all of this holiday eating with dietary or weight loss resolutions in the New Year, but it’s rare that people fulfill those resolutions.

There’s nothing wrong with a little holiday indulgence, especially if you use healthy ingredients and make the food yourself. Problems arise when you purchase sugary store bought treats, which are typically full of excess sugar, fat, and refined carbohydrates. Some argue that those are the things that make holiday desserts delicious. We aren’t here to argue, though; rather we want to provide healthier dessert alternatives for you this holiday season.

The Dherbs staff dug through the recipe archives and selected the top five holiday desserts. Some of them are raw vegan and some of them are vegan. We’ll be honest and say that we’ve tried all of these and they are scrumptious. Get your baking apron on, even though these don’t require baking, and get ready to make tasty holiday creations. Let us know how you like them in the comments.

We at Dherbs are in love with almonds. They help to power us through our cleanses while also providing us with a ton of nutrients. We post a lot of recipes that contain almonds, in case you haven’t visited our recipe section. It’s okay, if you didn’t…it’s not like we worked hard on it or anything ;) Not only are almonds a fantastic heart-healthy food, but they are also great for keeping cravings at bay, which helps you control your portions.

Fun Fact: Almonds are extremely rich in vitamin E, which is why almond oil is used in many skincare products. They are also more nutrient dense than any other nut!

Nutrients in Almonds

  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin E
  • Phosphorus
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • Copper
  • Niacin
  • Calcium

Making The Switch To Almond Milk

Within recent years, more and more people are ditching traditional cow’s milk and opting for non-dairy milk alternatives. Almond milk happens to be one of the most popular non-dairy options, and people can easily make it by simply blending almonds with water and straining the liquid through a cheesecloth. Click here to learn how to make almond milk. While there are reputable almond milk varieties, most commercial brands add preservatives, sweeteners, and flavors for a more appetizing taste. That being said, almond milk that is free of those ingredients is naturally rich in healthy fats, protein, magnesium, vitamin E, and contains a lot fewer calories and carbs than cow’s milk. Finally, the production of almond milk is much better for the environment.

To help celebrate National Almond Day, we have five recipes that feature the almighty almond. Get in the kitchen and let us know how you like the following recipes.

National Brownie Day is a day to indulge in one of America’s favorite baked goods. This classic bake sale item is a cross between a cookie and a cake and with so many kinds of brownies (blonde, chocolate, fudge, maple, or layered), it can be hard to figure out which ones you want to eat. It’s a good thing we have some delicious recipes for you in this article. But first…A brief history of the brownie.

A History, In Brief

Brownies were the brainchild of some brilliant chef in the late 1800s. What made this man create such an infamous baked good? Well, he was requested to make a dessert for ladies, who wanted a small cake-like dessert that could be eaten as part of a boxed lunch, attending a fair in Chicago. The chef, who worked at the Palmer House Hotel, created the brownie with an apricot glaze and walnuts. The Palmer House Hotel serves that same recipe to this day.

How To Celebrate

To be honest, the best way to celebrate this magical day is to enjoy an even more magical dessert. Rather than buying a box of brownie mix, which contains who knows what chemically processed ingredients, let’s change up the game and make some brownie-inspired recipes from scratch. Try making one of the following recipes and let us know how you like it.

Raw Vegan Brownie Bites

The holidays are right around the corner, which means that holiday cookie platters are expected, or delivered to you if you know the right people, or have the best neighbors. Maybe it was the colder temperatures, or the smell of Christmas trees at outdoor locations, but we were inspired to make a bunch of cookies for the holidays, and they are absolutely some of the best vegan cookies we’ve ever had. These cookies don’t have all the typical bad ingredients that lead to weight gain, which means that you can enjoy them guilt-free! And it’s no coincidence that today (December 4th) is National Cookie Day!

Cookie Fact: You can thank the Dutch for the word “cookie,” which is derived from the Danish word koekie, little cake. Cookies in America have a much shorter history, having arrived here in the 17th century. Macaroons and gingerbread cookies were very popular (and still are), but Americans have definitely upped their cookie game over the past 400 years.

Most people use so many unhealthy ingredients to make cookies, or worse, they buy processed, chemical-rich store bought dough. The worst thing that you can do is purchase pre-packaged cookies, which are often rich refined grains, sugars, and shortening that contains unhealthy trans fats. You can easily make your own cookies with simple ingredients that are not bad for your health. Make some of these awesome cookie varieties this season, or for National Cookie Day. You won’t believe how tasty they are. We hope you end up sipping a warm cup of tea while enjoying one of your tasty creations.

3-Ingredient Vegan Almond Butter Cookies

Pumpkin pie, pumpkin hummus, pumpkin pudding, pumpkin ravioli, pumpkin ice cream–the possibilities are delicious and never-ending. People like to carve pumpkins this time of year, but seldom do they actually incorporate this signature fall squash into their meals. That’s all about to change for National Pumpkin Day!

In addition to being an incredibly versatile ingredient, pumpkin packs some amazing health benefits. As long as you aren’t consuming artificially sweetened pumpkin spice lattes and sugary pumpkin pies, pumpkins can help to maintain heart health, sharpen eyesight, and protect the skin.

Improves Heart Health

Pumpkin seeds contain plant-based chemicals that are known as phytosterols. According to several studies, these chemicals have been known to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

High In Antioxidants

Oxidative stress can take a toll on your body and can occasionally lead to chronic illnesses like cancer and heart disease. Pumpkins contain antioxidants that work to neutralize free radicals, inhibiting them from damaging cells. The alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin antioxidants in pumpkin have been known to reduce the risk of eye diseases and certain cancers.

Protects The Skin

The same antioxidants that help to fight free radicals in the body are the same ones that can help keep your skin looking youthful. Beta-carotene, for instance, gets converted into vitamin A in the body, and one cup of cooked pumpkin satisfies 245% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A. Carotenoids act like a natural sunblock and help protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Pumpkins are incredibly versatile, delicious, and easy to incorporate into your diet. Try the following recipes on National Pumpkin Day and let us know how you like them.
