Do you find that you come home after a long day and your feet regularly feel dead? Whether it’s from standing all day, running for miles, or walking around the mall, sore feet that ache are no fun. You may resort to foot creams and give yourself a foot rub, but how much relief does that provide? It’s time to board the essential oils train because they may help you get back up and moving quickly.

There are several ways to help relieve foot pain with essential oils. If you want to pamper your feet, you may want to make a soothing essential oil foot bath. You soak your feet in warm water, Epsom salt, and about 10-20 drops of your favorite healing essential oil. Soak your feet for about 20 minutes while you relax. Consider listening to an audiobook or podcast that puts you in your happy place. By the end of the 20 minutes, you should notice a sense of relief and reduction in swelling.

If you don’t have the time to soak your feet in an essential oil foot bath, consider applying essential oils topically to your soles. The important thing to remember is to dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil of your choice. You may need to dilute differently, depending on which essential oil you use, as some are more potent than others. Generally, though, you mix three to four drops of an essential oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage that mixture into your feet. The following essential oils should help soothe your feet if they ever feel achy or sore.

Lavender Essential Oil

Commonly used in aromatherapy to calm the mind, lavender essential oil promotes feelings of relaxation. It may help relieve joint and muscle pain, in addition to calming some inflammatory skin conditions. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are responsible for the pain-relieving properties, especially for tight muscles. Some research indicates that it works to ease pain by increasing circulation to the area where you apply it.

Cypress Essential Oil

Cypress essential oil is made from the stems, young twigs, and needles of the cypress evergreen tree. The primary constituents of this essential oil are alpha-pinene and limonene, which work to stimulate blood flow. When you apply it topically on the skin, it provides the area with an energizing lift. Additionally, researchers identified that the antispasmodic properties in cypress essential oil may help alleviate muscle pulls and foot cramping.

Peppermint Essential Oil

According to several studies, peppermint essential oil works to relieve pain in two ways. First, it provides a calming, cooling sensation that can be somewhat tingly. That works to provide quick relief, but it also exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can quickly reduce swelling after topical application. The antimicrobial properties in peppermint essential oil may alleviate pain associated with athlete’s foot. Plus, the minty aroma helps to keep your feet smelling fresh.

Marjoram Essential Oil

Like cypress essential oil, marjoram essential oil exhibits antispasmodic properties, making it great for your sore, tired foot muscles. Marjoram belongs to the mint family and is related to basil, thyme, oregano, and sage. It is a great essential oil that you can apply after exercise to accelerate muscle recovery. The analgesic properties in the essential oil may also help alleviate mild pain. Lastly, marjoram is similar to lavender in that it helps promote a sense of calm and relaxation, relieving stress and allowing the body to release tension.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is commonly used to help promote decongestion and relieve stress. It also works to promote relaxation, which is why it is infused into steam rooms. Similar to peppermint essential oil, eucalyptus has a cooling effect that may help alleviate muscle pain. The anti-inflammatory properties may also relieve the pain of tired feet. Because it is an analgesic, eucalyptus may help numb the area after topical application, providing you with some much-need relief.

Are you embarrassed to remove your shoes in public because you have cracked heels or dry feet? There’s no need to worry because you’re about to have one of the most effective natural solutions for the problem. Made with all-natural ingredients, this DIY foot balm works to moisturize the heels and promote healing. You may be surprised at how quickly it works after daily application.

Why Do Heels Crack?

Skin that hardens and dries on the heels is more prone to cracking, especially if the weather is dry. The rim of the heel dries quickly and can thicken, which increases the pressure on the pad under the heel. Depending on your weight, shoes that you wear, and other factors, heels may crack more quickly or take time to split. More often than not, open-heel footwear and dry skin cause heels to crack, but being obese increases the risk as well. It’s better to wear supportive, closed shoes with socks to help ease symptoms.

When you make the foot balm in this article, it’s best to use organic ingredients whenever possible. The skin easily absorbs the ingredients, so you don’t want to pollute it with regular ingredients that may contain harmful preservatives or synthetic materials. Purchase the following ingredients in their organic form if you can.

Tea Tree Oil

The antibacterial properties of tea tree oil work to cleanse heels exceptionally well. It’s very common to experience redness, swelling, and inflammation, and tea tree oil provides calming relief to the skin. When it comes to remedying cracked heels, there may be no better healing duo than tea tree oil and olive oil. Tea tree oil also exhibits powerful antiseptic properties and is commonly used to help treat fungal lesions and inflamed cracks. Additionally, tea tree oil has emollient properties, which work to soften, soothe, and moisturize the skin.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a rich source of essential vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids, all of which improve the health of your skin. It works to lock in moisture and the antioxidants help to improve signs of aging. In regards to cracked heels or dry feet, you can apply olive oil to help lock in moisture and promote softer skin. After massaging olive oil into your feet, it’s best to leave it on for an hour or two. Put on a pair of socks and then wash your feet after the time has passed. Your feet will be softer and more hydrated in no time.

Coconut Oil

The high concentration of vitamin E makes coconut oil very effective at healing damaged skin. It addition to vitamin E, coconut oil contains natural proteins that work to repair damaged skin cells. The lauric acid in coconut oil also exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, both of which accelerate the healing process. Any time you want to apply coconut oil to the skin, it’s best to do so after bathing. Coconut oil works to lock moisture into the skin, preventing dryness for a lot longer.

DIY Foot Balm For Cracked Heels

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup shea butter (raw and unrefined)
  • 2 tablespoons cold-pressed organic coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons organic extra-virgin olive oil
  • 25 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Combine the shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil in the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Stir until melted.
  • If you don’t have a double boiler, simply add the ingredients and melt them over medium-low heat.
  • Stir the melted mixture before removing from the heat. Pour the oil mixture into a clean, heat-safe glass jar.
  • Add the tea tree oil and stir to combine. Allow the mixture to solidify at room temperature before you screw on the lid.
  • Massage a small amount into your feet at bedtime, put on some socks, and let your feet absorb the ingredients overnight. They’ll be rejuvenated in the morning.

]]>

Let’s bust a myth straight out of the gate: You don’t need to be an athlete to feel the incredible itch of athlete’s foot. It’s a common fungal infection that causes itchy, scaly, burning, stinging, or occasionally cracked skin. A person experiences athlete’s foot when there is a large presence of dermatophytes on the skin. This type of fungi grows in warm, humid conditions, for example, sweaty socks.

Athlete’s foot, ringworm, and jock itch are three closely related fungal infections. More often than not, people treat them with anti-fungal medications, but it’s possible for infection to return. There are also natural remedies to help improve the condition, but some may not work for everyone. It’s time to consult a physician if the condition doesn’t improve within two weeks after beginning self-treatment with either natural remedies or an over-the-counter anti-fungal product. You may also want to consult your doctor if you have diabetes and suspect athlete’s foot. If the foot swells up and you notice redness then see your doctor as well.

Natural remedies and over-the-counter anti-fungal products can alleviate symptoms. Some of these products may help avoid a recurring rash, while others will not work at all. And then there are products that work, but personal habits get in the way of the healing process. If you have athlete’s foot and are on the healing path, avoid these common mistakes that can worsen the condition.

You Wear The Same Shoes Every Day

Everyone has a pair of shoes that they could wear every day, no matter what. One pair of shoes may be as comfortable as a fuzzy pair of house slippers, but those comfy kicks may prevent your athlete’s foot from healing properly. According to medical professionals, wearing the same shoes every day doesn’t allow the inside of the shoes to dry properly between wears. A moist, enclosed environment is not conducive to athlete’s foot, or any fungal condition. Keep the feet and the surfaces that the feet touch clean and dry. Alternate shoes every day, wash sneakers, insoles, and socks regularly, and choose breathable shoes if your feet are prone to sweating.

You Walk Barefoot In Shared Spaces

Some people brave the public spaces with no fear of catching any sort of disease, bacteria, or fungus. Walking barefoot in airplanes, gyms, public pools, locker rooms, or hotel rooms can result in athlete’s foot. Fungus that fosters athlete’s foot may linger on the floor in these areas, according to dermatologists. If you have a break in the skin, walking around barefoot in shared spaces leaves you more susceptible to an infection. A skin break or wound is an invitation for opportunistic pathogens. If you already suffer from athlete’s foot, walking barefoot with broken skin not only spreads the fungus to the floor, but can also lead to secondary bacterial infection. Always wear shoes or flip-flops in shared spaces.

You Moisturize Your Feet

People often mistake dry, cracked skin on the feet for athlete’s foot. It’s possible for athlete’s foot to look scaly on the bottoms of the feet, but it’s also possible to simply experience dry skin. One thing to remember is that fungus feeds off moist environments. If you have athlete’s foot, moisturizing will only worsen the condition and inhibit the healing process. The best thing you can do is ditch the lotion and consider an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream instead. If you can’t distinguish dry skin from athlete’s foot, consider seeing a podiatrist to properly assess the situation.

You Don’t Cut Toenails Often Enough

Believe it or not, this can slow the healing process if you suffer from athlete’s foot. Nailbeds can present the perfect environment for infection, especially if nails are too long. If you don’t cut your toenails, they can break and cause trauma to the nailbed. That can then lead to a deformed toenail, which has an increased risk of bacterial or fungal infection. Keep toenails short in order to prevent fungus from entering under the toenail or surrounding skin. Trim nails just above the white line using clippers.

Foot fungus is an embarrassing topic of conversation. Failure to address superficial infections that affect the outer layers of the skin can worsen and lead to more serious conditions. A fungal infection of the foot is commonly athlete’s foot or foot ringworm. The skin can develop fungal infections, but so can the toenails, and that is known as onychomycosis.

Depending on the severity of the infection, medications or antibiotics may or may not be necessary. More often than not, athlete’s foot can be remedied by way of regularly applying an anti-fungal steroid cream. Creams like this can be harmful to the rest of the body, though, as the skin absorbs the other chemicals and ingredients in them. What about harnessing the power of natural ingredients to remedy the issue? The following ingredients, which are in the foot soak recipe in this article, offer powerful anti-fungal properties.

Baking Soda

Not only is baking soda is an excellent ingredient to help neutralize foot odors, but it also helps to battle fungal infections. It dries excess moisture between toes, and fungus thrives in moist environments. Baking soda helps to exfoliate the skin’s surface, which destroys the fungal layer underneath. Additionally, the natural alkaline nature of baking soda helps to neutralize the acidic environment of a fungal infection.

Tea Tree Oil

Some scientific studies confirmed that tea tree oil is capable of destroying nail fungus. A 2013 study found that tea tree oil inhibited the growth of Trichophyton rubrum, a fungus that causes nail infections. This same fungus often causes athlete’s foot. The antiseptic and anti-fungal properties in tea tree oil help to reduce the risk of recurring fungal infections. If you regularly experience athlete’s foot or nail infections, regular application may be necessary.

Epsom Salt

People typically soak in Epsom salt baths to help reduce muscle aches and pains. The belief is that the body efficiently absorbs the magnesium, which may treat a variety of problems. According to several studies, Epsom salt does not kill the fungus that causes athlete’s foot, but it does help draw out excess moisture like baking soda. The crystals in Epsom salt also aid with the removal of dead skin cells, leaving the feet more supple and nourished post soak.

Peppermint Essential Oil

A recent laboratory study found that several essential oils, including peppermint essential oil, were effective against 22 bacterial strains. Out of 12 fungi, peppermint essential oil completely inhibited 11 of them. This is because peppermint essential oil exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antiseptic activity. Additionally, experts believe that the menthol in peppermint essential oil helps soothe inflamed skin.

DIY Anti-Fungal Foot Soak

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 30 drops tea tree oil
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 tbsp sweet almond oil
  • Green tea leaves (as much as you like)

Instructions:

  • Pour the Epsom salt and baking soda into a medium-sized bowl and mix well.
  • In a small bowl, combine the essential oils with the carrier oil. Mix well for about 30 seconds to fully incorporate the essential oils into the almond oil.
  • Pour the oil mixture over the Epsom salt mixture and stir to combine.
  • Add as many green tea leaves as you like to the bowl and gently fold them in. To do this, you can simply open up green tea bags and dump the contents in the bowl.
  • When everything is fully mixed, pour the entire mixture into a glass jar and screw on the lid to keep fresh.
  • When ready to use, pour about 1/2 cup in a foot soaker with lukewarm water and stir until dissolved. Let your feet soak in it for 20 minutes. Repeat once per week if you experience recurring fungal infections.

The feet spend most of their time confined in socks and shoes. Needless to say that they are removed from fresh air and the natural world. That’s all the more reason to give them some undivided attention and love at the end of the day. After a pleasant dinner, give yourself a quick foot massage and moisturize them with an all natural foot butter. They’ll absorb all of the hydrating ingredients overnight and feel refreshed in the morning.

This foot butter contains four simple ingredients. We don’t have time to waste on unhealthy chemicals, additives, or anything else that detracts from core, beneficial ingredients. In the case of this recipe, three of the ingredients will revive your feet. The peppermint essential oil has nourishing properties, but it’s mainly in this recipe for the scent and cooling factor. Coconut oil, shea butter, and avocado oil are the real heroes of this recipe.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a great source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. While it is a common and healthy oil for culinary applications, it also has a place in natural skin care routines. The skin easily absorbs this oil, which is helpful for anyone who needs to maintain moisture. The antioxidants help to enhance smoothness by improving elasticity. Avocado oil also works to replenish moisture, protect from damage, and heal chapped or cracked skin.

Coconut Oil

Not only does coconut oil encourage thicker hair, but it also helps promote healthier skin. If you need to encourage deep hydration to your feet, coconut oil is the ingredient for you. Coconut oil works to restore, repair, and moisturize cracked heels or dry feet. Leaving coconut oil on feet overnight is one of the best ways to allow the skin to absorb the essential fatty acids. It’s also easy for calluses to develop on the soles of your feet, especially the heels and balls. If you engage in strenuous activity, or you job requires you to stand all day, moisturize with coconut oil at night to prevent calluses from cracking.

Shea Butter

Why should you use shea butter for cracked heels? We can give you a long list of reasons because shea butter is just that amazing. The anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce dryness and redness that are all too common in people with dry or cracked feet. If you’ve experienced cracked heels, you know how uncomfortable it can be to walk on them. Shea butter’s essential fatty acids also encourage moisture retention, helping you avoid flakiness and dryness. Lastly, the linolenic, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids promote healing and optimal hydration, while warding off dryness and cracks.

DIY Mint Foot Butter

Ingredients:

  • 100 grams coconut oil
  • 150 grams shea butter
  • 30 milliliters avocado oil
  • 5 ml peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil and shea butter to a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until they are soft.
  • You can also add these two ingredients to a stand mixer (like a Kitchen Aid mixer) and mix until soft.
  • Add the avocado oil and peppermint essential oil and continue to mix until it becomes soft and fluffy. Scrape down the sides with a spatula midway through mixing to fully incorporate all the ingredients.
  • Spoon this foot butter into containers and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Apply to your feet at night and place socks over your feet while you sleep. This will promote optimal hydration.

Tea tree oil is one of the most popular essential oils in use. Also referred to as melaleuca oil, tea tree oil comes from the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree. It has the ability to kill numerous bacterial and fungal strains and has prominent use in historical, herbal healing practices. To this day, tea tree oil remains an alternative, complementary treatment for common skin problems.

There are many studies that indicate the diverse health benefits of tea tree oil. Many health experts attribute the healing properties to the inherent terpenoids, which exhibit anti-fungal and antiseptic activity. Terpinen-4-ol is abundant in tea tree oil and scientists believe it to be the primary reason for tea tree’s antibacterial properties. In the past, tea tree oil has helped people overcome symptoms of vaginal yeast infections, athlete’s foot, acne, mild nail infections, and even minor cuts and burns.

Note: Keep in mind that tea tree oil is a very powerful essential oil. Experts do not advise that people apply it directly to the skin. Please dilute it in a carrier oil (like olive oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil) before topical application. Direct application of 100% tea tree oil can result in burning, allergic reactions, or skin irritation.

Reduces Appearance Of Acne

According to many anecdotal reports and research studies, tea tree oil has the ability to reduce inflammation caused by acne. Roughly 50 million Americans suffer from acne at a given moment. One study monitored the effects of tea tree oil gel and a placebo for acne treatment. The results indicated that the tea tree oil group experienced a reduction in total acne and the severity of acne. The placebo experienced limited to no improvement.

Help For Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that occurs on the feet. It’s very contagious and can spread from the feet to the toenails to the hands. A controlled trial monitored the use of 25% tea tree oil solution, 50% tea tree oil solution, and a placebo in 158 people. After two daily applications for one month, the two tea tree oil solutions proved to be more effective than the placebo. In the group that used the 50% solution, about 64% of the participants were cured. 31% of people in the placebo group were also cured.

Reduces Dandruff

It’s common for many adults to experience dandruff. It can result from poor diet, excessive shampooing, or chemical hair care products. Mild dandruff that is related to the Pityrosporum ovale yeast may be remedied with a 5% tea tree oil solution. One study found that shampooing with a 5% tea tree shampoo for one month led to less itchiness and greasiness. Additionally, participants experienced improvements in the severity of dandruff. A different study found that tea tree oil shampoo may benefit children with cradle cap. The solution has to be diluted before used on an infant. Test on the baby’s arm and rinse to see if a reaction occurs within 24-48 hours.

Great For Toenail Infections

Be the cause nail abnormalities or a result of untreated athlete’s foot, nail fungal infections are quite common. They are also problematic because treating them is difficult. One randomized study examined the use of a solution with 5% tea tree oil and 2% butenafine hydrochloride in 60 people. After 16 weeks, 80% of the people who used the cream experienced significant improvement. Another study monitored the twice daily application of 100% pure tea tree oil versus 1% clotrimazole solution (common anti-fungal medication). After six months, the tea tree oil group proved to be more effective as an anti-fungal remedy.

For Cuts, Infections, And Scars

Historically, people used tea tree oil for wound healing. Experts attribute tea tree’s ability to accelerate healing to the antiseptic and antibacterial properties. The broad-spectrum antibacterial activity helps damage bacterial cell walls, helping to kill bacteria. One study in the British Medical Journal found that tea tree oil is a powerful disinfectant. Another study found that a combination of tea tree oil and raw honey helps reduce burns and scarring.

Bye Bye Itchy Skin

As mentioned earlier, tea tree oily can help reduce itchiness and dryness associated with dandruff. The anti-inflammatory properties offer soothing and relief from itchy areas of skin. Several studies found that tea tree oil has the ability to reduce inflamed, itchy skin. One study found that it reduced itchiness as a result of nickel sensitivity. The study used pure tea tree oil application, but it’s better to apply it with a carrier oil.

The face and hands often receive the most attention when it comes to skin care, but the feet are just as deserving. A good foot soak at the end of the day is not only necessary, but relaxing as well. It can help invigorate the skin on your feet, reduce muscle cramps or achy joints, and promote healthy detoxification, if you use the right ingredients.

The foot detox bath in this article helps promote healthier feet. Whether your feet are calloused, odorous, achy, sore, or cracked, this detox bath can help out those puppies. Sit back in a chair and let the relaxation and detoxification begin. Your feet will feel renewed once they emerge from this foot bath, and we’ll explain why by detailing the featured ingredients below.

Bentonite Clay

People have been using bentonite clay to promote the removal of impurities from the skin for thousands of years. Some of these impurities include environmental pollutants, oils, and bacteria that live on the skin. Some people ingest bentonite clay to remove toxins from the digestive system, while others prefer using it topically. Bentonite clay contains iron, calcium, and magnesium, and it works to adsorb oils and dirt from the skin. It does so by clinging to molecules or ions on the skin because it has an electrical charge when mixed with fluid. When you wash the clay off the body, it takes the toxins or impurities with it.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Some people dislike apple cider vinegar because it has a potent aroma, but try to get past the scent to experience the health benefits. It can be a natural remedy to myriad health problems, and it has powerful pH-balancing and detoxifying properties. Can’t stand the taste of it? That’s okay, because you can soak your feet in it to help remove germs, promote oxygenation, and get rid of fungal infections. Several studies found that apple cider vinegar is effective at hydrating dry feet and killing fungi and microbes that commonly cause feet to have bad odor.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is wonderful if you experience any tension or soreness. It contains magnesium sulfate, which has been used to treat pain and other ailments for hundreds of years. Soaking feet in an Epsom salt bath can ease soreness, but it may also help to remove toxins and heavy metals from the body. The theory is that the Epsom salt helps draw out these toxins through the feet, but evidence on this is not concrete. One of the other benefits is that Epsom salt has anti-fungal properties, which may help kill fungal infections on the feet, or make the skin less hospitable for fungal infections.

DIY Bentonite Clay Foot Detox

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
  • 6 quarts hot water
  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions:

  • Pour the hot water in a large basin or foot tub and dissolve the Epsom salt in it.
  • In a glass bowl (not metal), mix the bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar into a thick paste. Make sure to use a plastic, wooden, or ceramic mixing utensil. Any metal that comes in contact with the bentonite clay can ruin the electrical charge it has.
  • Rub this bentonite clay mixture all over your feet and let it dry completely. If you feel your feet pulsating, this is normal.
  • Place your feet in the hot water and Epsom salt bath and let them soak in there for 15 minutes. The clay will dissolve so that you can easily rinse your feet after. Pat to dry.

Cracked heels are extremely common and you don’t have to feel self-conscious about them. In fact, you can easily remedy them with a variety of natural ingredients, like the ones in the foot scrub in this article. Containing Epsom salt, coconut oil, and tea tree oil, this wonderful foot scrub will have you wearing flip-flops with confidence in no time.

What Causes Cracked Heels?

Open-toed shoes and dry air are not solely responsible for cracked heels. More often than not, cracked heels stem from other skin conditions or health problems, including vitamin deficiency, thyroid problems, and weight management issues. But…the dry or cracked nature of your heels is not permanent. Using the foot scrub in this article can help, but you may want to consider a diet rich in zinc, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E to maintain healthy skin.

Epsom Salt For Cracked Heels

Some people like to soak their feet in an Epsom salt foot bath, and others like to exfoliate with Epsom salt. If you have dry or cracked heels, exfoliate with Epsom salt by gently massaging it onto your feet. The great thing about Epsom salt is that it is readily available, inexpensive, and it isn’t too abrasive for your skin.

Coconut Oil For Cracked Heels

Many people experience cracked or dry heels because they lack moisture. Often times, you can attribute this to being in a mild state of dehydration. You need to drink more water to hydrate the body, but you can apply coconut oil to your heels for optimal hydration. Coconut oil is a natural balm that helps to strengthen the tissues within the cracks, and it helps your skin retain moisture. You can always apply coconut oil to your heels before bed, put socks on, and let the moisturizing happen throughout the night.

Tea Tree Oil For Cracked Heels

The cracks in your heels make you more susceptible to bacterial infection. In order to keep bacteria at bay, start using tea tree oil, which has antiseptic properties. Tea Tree oil contains beneficial fatty acids, anti-inflammatory properties, and antiseptic properties that work to keep your heels healthy. Make sure that you apply tea tree oil with some sort of carrier oil, like coconut oil, because using it by itself can be harsh for sensitive skin.

DIY Foot Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Epsom salt
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 30 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Melt the coconut oil in a pan or in a medium-sized heat-safe bowl in the microwave. Once it is melted, mix in the Epsom salt.
  • Once you have thoroughly mixed the coconut oil and Epsom salt, add the tea tree oil and stir to combine.
  • Pour into separate jars and store in a cool dry place. Use as needed.

Swollen feet or ankles are the result of fluid accumulation in the base of the legs. This swelling, commonly referred to as edema, can be attributed to long periods of sitting or standing, but puffiness can also occur during hot weather. If the person does not have edema, swollen feet or ankles may be linked to kidney problems, heart disorders, or poor blood circulation.

What Is Edema?

On its own, edema is not considered to be harmful, but it can most certainly be uncomfortable. Edema can result from diet, pregnancy, medications, or an underlying disease. Caused by fluid that is trapped in bodily tissues, edema most commonly occurs in the ankles, feet, legs, and hands. If one leg swells up or you experience partial facial swelling, you may be experiencing a blood clot and the need to address that pronto is paramount. If edema is a symptom of an underlying issue, you must address that issue to get rid of the swelling for good.

The Journal of Ethno-pharmacology recently published a study that focused on an herb that may help decrease swelling. Acting as a diuretic that works to inhibit sodium and potassium ion pumps, parsley influences the process of osmosis by way increasing urinary flow. Parsley is also loaded with potassium, and many diuretic drugs deplete the body’s potassium levels.

Benefits of Parsley

While parsley is often looked at as a simple plate garnish, it has many uses in the world of natural remedies. Scientists have found that parsley is rich in nine powerful antioxidants, folate, and vitamins A and C. Beyond its ability to reduce swelling and water weight, parsley can also balance blood sugar levels, and the inherent flavonoid (apigenin) possesses remarkable anti-cancer properties. Eugenol, a powerful oil in parsley, has strong anti-inflammatory properties that help suppress joint swelling.

Dr. John R. Christopher, a big name in the herbalist world, encourages people with edema to drink two quarts of parsley tea every day to reduce swelling and fluid retention. When you make a batch of tea, use the stems and leaves of parsley bunches. You can make a giant batch in one go or you can make one quart at a time.

Ingredients For One Quart Of Tea:

  • 1 cup parsley, chopped
  • 4 cups water

Instructions:

  • Boil the water in a saucepan and place the parsley in an infusion basket or several fine mesh reusable tea bags.
  • Once the water has finished boiling, remove it from the heat and add the infusion basket or tea bags of parsley to the water. Let this steep for five minutes.
  • Remove the parsley from the water and use an optional tablespoon of raw honey to sweeten the tea.
  • Drink two batches of this tea per day until the swelling goes down.
