Did you ever think of putting coffee grounds on your skin? Did you have the same thought about oats? If you did, then you clicked on the right article! This homemade face and body scrub is incredibly easy to make and helps nourish the skin. Learning about the different uses of ingredients, especially foods, can open your world to exciting possibilities. Plus, there are many benefits to scrubbing different foods on the skin.

Is Coffee Good For Your Skin?

In short, yes, or it is possible that caffeine encourages healthier skin. A 2013 study found that caffeic acid, an antioxidant in coffee, may enhance collagen production, which works to reduce signs of aging. A separate study from 2015 found a link between drinking coffee and reduced signs of “photoaging.” In the case of the study, photoaging referred to pigmented spots and wrinkles.

There is one caveat about coffee and cosmetics. Most coffee-related research focuses on drinking coffee or using cosmetic products that contain caffeine. Most studies do not focus on coffee scrubs, so it is difficult to generalize the results of these studies in relation to the coffee scrub in this article. That said, there is likely no harm in using a coffee scrub on your body. Much like other exfoliants, coffee scrubs can help:

Are Oats Good For The Skin?

Much like coffee, oats are best known for their culinary uses. Oats have been a cultivated food source for humans for over 3,000 years. Some researchers note that the oldest cultivated oat grains date back to the early Bronze Age. Despite the mass consumption of oats, people have used them for a variety of cosmetic purposes, including natural skin cleansers. One of the primary benefits of oats is that they help to hydrate and nourish dry skin. Many studies show that skin care products containing oatmeal can reduce skin dryness and associated symptoms, such as itching, flaking, or tightness. In addition to keeping the skin well-hydrated, oats also help to balance the skin’s pH. Oats are essentially a pH buffer, helping your skin maintain a healthy pH of around 5.0.

Does Avocado Oil Encourage Healthier Skin?

Avocado is naturally rich in vitamin E, potassium, and lecithin, all of which work to nourish and moisturize the skin. The skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, can easily absorb these nutrients, which can encourage the formation of healthy, new skin. The antioxidants in avocado oil may help to repair damaged skin or soothe irritated skin and redness. That makes avocado oil a helpful ingredient for people with psoriasis or eczema. Finally, some studies have suggested that avocado oil may help ease the symptoms of sunburn. A 2011 review of studies found that the vitamin E, protein, essential fatty acids, and beta-carotene in avocado oil help soothe the skin and encourage healing.

DIY Face And Body Scrub

Ingredients For Coffee Infused Oil:

  • 1 cup avocado oil
  • 1/2 cup coffee grounds

Ingredients For Scrub:

  • 8 tablespoons coffee grounds
  • 4 tablespoons oats
  • 4 tablespoons coffee infused oil
  • 20 drops vanilla essential oil

Instructions:

  • To make the coffee infused oil, put the coffee grounds into a glass jar and pour the avocado oil into the jar. Screw the lid on and let it sit in the sun for a few weeks, shaking every so often.
  • After a few weeks, strain the oil through a cheesecloth and save the strained oil to make the scrub.
  • Add the coffee grounds and oatmeal to a blender or food processor and blend until you get a fine powder.
  • Pour in the blended mixture into a bowl and then add in the coffee infused oil and essential oil. Mix well until you achieve an even consistency.
  • To use, mix this scrub with a little water and spread over your face and body. Rinse with lukewarm water and then finish your skin care routine.

We don’t know who needs to hear this, but everyone needs to pamper themselves more often. Take the time to hit the pause button on life for much needed self-care, which can mean many things. Carve out time to soak in a bath, meditate, engage in breath work, or pamper your skin with the nourishing ingredients in this homemade aloe green tea face scrub.

The great thing about this recipe, besides the nutrient-dense, all-natural ingredients, is the fact that it comes together in minutes. All you have to do is combine all of the ingredients in a bowl, whisk until thoroughly combined, and then store in your desired vessel. Whenever you’re ready to start clearing up your skin, apply this homemade face scrub. It may help reduce inflammation, promote collagen production, and clean out pores to reduce the risk of acne. We’ll highlight some of the featured ingredients that are amazing for your skin

Green Tea

Since the 7th century, people have revered the healing properties of green tea. It imbued people with energy, focus, and enhanced meditation practices. Nowadays, green tea is in everything from lattes to skin care products. In regards to the skin, green tea can be highly beneficial, as it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. The catechins, which are polyphenols in green tea, can reduce irritation, swelling, and redness on the skin. Green tea can also be an antibacterial agent, helping to unclog pores and reduce the appearance of acne. The powerful antioxidant, EGCG, in green tea works to promote DNA repair and protect skin from UV damage. As a bonus, the caffeine and tannins may help shrink blood vessels around the eyes, making it a potential solution for puffy eyes and dark circles.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel exhibits cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, which help to accelerate the healing of a sunburn. Applying this gel provides the skin with a protective layer that helps it retain moisture. Unlike regular moisturizers, aloe vera gel doesn’t leave a greasy film on the face or skin. In fact, it helps to unclog pores and soften the skin. Due to the vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, in aloe vera gel, researchers suggest that it exhibits anti-aging properties. Moreover, the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties help eradicate blemishes and reduce fine lines. Plus, it helps encourage the production of collagen to improve skin elasticity.

Sugar

A scrub would not be a scrub without a gentle exfoliant. Sugar is one of the best natural beauty products to help exfoliate your skin. The granules are fine enough to help remove dead skin cells and impurities without irritating the skin. With all that dirt and dead skin cells removed, the skin appears more radiant. You give yourself a healthier glow! Plus, dermatologists note that sugar helps to fight aging by not allowing toxins to attack skin cells.

Homemade Aloe Green Tea Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  • 2 green tea bags, opened
  • 4 drops vitamin E oil
  • 5 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a medium-sized bowl and whisk to combine. Make sure that you open the tea bag and empty the contents into the bowl.
  • Once your ingredients are thoroughly mixed, transfer the mixture into a jar and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Before you apply on your face, do a patch test on your arm or leg and then rinse. Wait 24 hours to ensure that you do not have a reaction.
  • If you don’t have a reaction, use when ready.

Making your own beauty products isn’t just a trend; rather, it’s a great way to enhance your skin and save money. Quality skin care products are hard to come by, and the ones that are great tend to cost an arm and a leg. Even then, those “natural” products can contain fragrances or other chemicals that harm the skin. With DIY skin care products, you know exactly what they contain, and the body has an easier time absorbing them.

Why Do Breakouts Happen?

Breakouts aren’t the worst thing in life, but they can ruin your day. Can you attempt to camouflage your breakouts? Surely, but that doesn’t address the real issue. Breakouts typically occur where the skin has the most oil glands, i.e. the face, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Hair follicles fill with dead skin cells, sebum (oil), and occasionally bacteria. This clogging can result in blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. Although acne is most common in teenagers, it affects people of all ages.

If the pore is clogged and you don’t see inflammation, that is called a comedone. If the comedone is closed, experts consider that a whitehead (the pimple or zit that looks whitish or yellowish). An open comedone has a black plug, that is a blackhead. The color comes from the bacteria and oil inside the pore, which turns black after exposure to the air.

Causes Of Breakouts

Many things can cause breakouts, but the good news is that there are easy ways to prevent them from happening. Although stress is thought to be a cause of acne, this is not actually true. Stress can increase the severity of acne because corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), a hormone released during stress, triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines. That promotes more oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. In addition to stress, skin care products, acne treatments, diet, dehydration, and smoking cigarettes can all increase the risk and frequency of breakouts.

If you want to reduce the risk of breakouts, incorporate one, some, or all of the following DIY recipes to promote clearer skin. This goes without saying, but do not use one of these recipes if you are allergic or sensitive to certain ingredients. If you’re unsure of whether or not you have a sensitivity but you know you have sensitive skin, consider a patch test before applying the product all over your face. A small spot on the arm tends to be a great place to test products. If no reaction occurs within 24 hours, you should be good to use those ingredients.

Exfoliation is an important step in any skin care routine. It’s a crucial process that aids with the removal of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. The skin sheds these dead skin cells every 30 days, but sometimes it cannot get rid of them properly. This can result in clogged pores or dry, flaky skin.

Since there are so many exfoliation scrubs and tools, it can be hard to know which one is best. Do you go for the cucumber mint one or buy the one you keep seeing on commercials? Or do you make the responsible choice and opt for one that has very few chemicals? Well, if you choose a minimally processed, chemical-free option, why don’t you just make your own scrub to exfoliate your skin? It’s quite simple and you may already have the ingredients you need in your kitchen.

When Should You Exfoliate?

Well, this will entirely depend on daily routine, your skin type, and what you want to get out of exfoliating. People with dry or normal skin may only need to exfoliate once or twice per week, while others with oily skin require exfoliation every other day. For people with sensitive skin, it’s important to never exfoliate excessively.

Gentle exfoliation can help contribute to brighter, tone skin with a smooth appearance. Additionally, exfoliation can increase collagen production, which helps to improve skin elasticity. The skin develops wrinkles as you age because the dermis loses elastin. Promoting collagen production via exfoliation may reduce wrinkles and fine lines by keeping skin tight and healthy.

If you want to properly exfoliate, though, you need the right ingredients. Some of the best exfoliating ingredients are in the following three scrub recipes. If you make them, let us know how they work for you in the comments below. Happy exfoliating!

Almond & Avocado Face Scrub

Perfect for dry skin, this face scrub works to give life to dull skin. Even if your skin is oily, you may enjoy using this scrub. Did you know that oily skin can sometimes be the result of dry skin? If this is the case, this scrub is meant for you.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup almond meal (ground almonds)
  • 1/2 avocado, peeled, pitted, and mashed
  • 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a small glass bowl and mix to combine.
  • Before using, make sure to clean your face.
  • Massage the scrub gently in circular motions with your fingertips. Rinse away after a couple minutes.

Brown Sugar Face Scrub

Looking for a face scrub for all skin types? You just found it! This is an effective scrub that uses the exfoliating power of brown sugar, which is mild enough for sensitive skin, and gets the job done. Plus, the aroma of this scrub is intoxicating.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon argan oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon mixed essential oils (lavender, peppermint, and rose)

Instructions:

  • In a small bowl, use your fingertips to mix the sugar, honey, and argan oil.
  • Drop in the essential oils and continue to mix in circular motions.
  • Start exfoliating gently in circular motions. After a couple minutes, rinse with warm water and then allow your face to air dry.
  • Remove any residual honey with a washcloth.

Coffee & Coconut Scrub

Besides being a delicious duo, coffee and coconut were made to revitalize your facial skin. Coffee grounds exhibit beneficial antioxidants that help nourish the skin, working to improve tone and elasticity. Keep in mind that coffee grounds may be too intense for people with sensitive skin. If this is the case, replace coffee grounds with almond meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon coffee grounds
  • 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coffee grounds to a small bowl and use your finger tips to mix in the coconut oil.
  • Once the mixture is thoroughly combined, gently massage it into your skin. Leave it on for a couple minutes before rinsing away with warm water.

Right now, at this very second, you probably have the necessary ingredients in your home to make the perfect body scrub. These ingredients may be hiding in your pantry, fridge, or cupboard, but they can’t wait to come out and exfoliate your skin.

The great thing about body scrubs is that they help exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation contributes to healthier looking skin that appears more youthful. The American Academy of Dermatology says that exfoliation stimulates collagen production, helping to keep the skin tight and glowing. Additionally, exfoliating your skin removes bacteria and dead skin cells.

The Perfect DIY Scrub Formula

A sugar scrub is simple to make, especially when you have the perfect ratio for your ingredients. All you need to do is prep for five minutes, place your scrub in a container, and use the scrub. The basic homemade body scrub recipe is as follows:

  • 1 cup exfoliant
  • ½ cup liquid
  • 2-3 tablespoons of fun add-ins

Place the exfoliant in a bowl and slowly mix in the liquid. You don’t want a runny mixture, and you don’t want a mixture that is too firm. The consistency should be somewhat thick, kind of like a smoothie. Mix in the add-ins and then store the scrub in a cool dark place. You’ll find excellent ingredients for your DIY scrubs below.

Exfoliants

Coffee Grounds

The grounds do not dissolve in water, making them excellent for scrubbing away dead skin cells. A 2013 study found that the caffeic acid (an antioxidant) in coffee works to boost collagen levels and reduce the amount of premature aging cells. The antimicrobial properties of caffeic acid also protect the skin from bacteria.

Oats

Is your skin sensitive? If you answered “yes” to this question, then you’ll want to use oats in your DIY body scrub. While oats reason help to scrub away dead skin cells, they are gentle enough that your skin won’t get irritated. Additionally, people add oats to baths to soothe irritated or itchy skin, making it excellent for sensitive skin.

Sugar

Sugar is great for mechanical exfoliation, meaning it removes the top layer of skin cells, along with dirt, bacteria, and excess oils. In the process of removing dead skin cells, sugar helps to create a more radiant complexion. The soft small granules of sugar actually melt onto your skin during exfoliation, making it less abrasive than other harsher exfoliants.

Salt

People who have dry patches of skin should exfoliate with salt. Epsom salt, sea salt, or Kosher salt help to create a barrier on the skin that reduces skin inflammation. Many people like to soak in baths with salts because of the mineral content. Since the skin is the largest organ in the body, it can absorb these minerals and use them to benefit the whole body.

Liquids

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the most popular ingredients in homemade scrubs, primarily because of the moisturizing and exfoliating properties. It is rich in lauric acid, which works to keep the skin supple by creating a protective layer. Additionally, coconut oil can remove oily residue from the skin and unclog pores.

Olive Oil

The primary benefit of olive oil is that it moisturizes the skin by reducing water loss. It actually increases the water content in the skin, which works to improve overall appearance. Olive oil also protects against environmental damage and inflammation, which helps to reduce premature signs of aging, irritation, or redness.

Jojoba Oil

Because jojoba oil is closely matched to human sebum, the skin naturally and easily absorbs it. This means that you won’t feel greasy after applying it, which makes it great to use on your face. When your body can better absorb the oil, you have a lesser chance of your skin getting irritated. Jojoba is great if you are prone to acne.

Add-Ins

Essential Oils

It can be difficult to decide on the right essential oil to use, especially since there are so many. Do not skimp on quality when it comes to essential oils. Many brands produce essential oils that are not 100% pure, and they contain other oils or ingredients. Only get pure essential oils! Additionally, make sure to do patch tests of the scrubs that contain essential oils because some people are very sensitive to them. Great essential oils to use include peppermint, tea tree, vanilla, lavender, grapefruit, geranium, and eucalyptus.

Fruit

If you feel like eating half of a papaya and using the other half in a scrub, you can do that! Different fruits contain powerful antioxidants that encourage healthy skin cell production. For instance, mangos are rich in vitamin A, which works to remove dead skin cells and promotes the growth of new, healthy skin cells. The vitamin C in lemons and pineapple works to clear up the skin and promote collagen production.

Herbs & Spice

Herbs and spices can do no wrong. They add depth of flavor to your meals, but they also benefit internal and external bodily health. Many civilizations have used herbs and spices for skin and beauty needs. Many herbs have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, all of which are great for boosting the health of your skin.

Do you suffer from oily skin? Are you constantly experimenting with different products to get rid of stubborn acne? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, then you clicked on the right article. You aren’t alone on your quest to clearer skin because acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. In fact, the annual yearly cost for treating acne in America amounts to $3 billion.

What Is Acne?

According to Mayo Clinic, “Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.” When this happens, the person can experience pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads on the chest, back, forehead, face, or shoulders. Teenagers commonly experience acne, but it can affect people of all ages. Fortunately, there are many natural ingredients that can help clear up your skin.

Grapefruit Essential Oil For Acne

Grapefruit essential oil is extracted from glands in the grapefruit peel, and it has a wonderful citrusy aroma because of that. It has a variety of health properties, one of the most notable being that it helps nourish the skin. Many face lotions or creams contain grapefruit essential oil because it has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which help keep the face free of bacteria. A test-tube study found that grapefruit essential oil displayed antibacterial activity against P. acnes, a common bacteria that causes acne.

Coconut Oil For Acne

Rich in medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil has some impressive health properties. Lauric acid, in particular, has powerful antimicrobial properties that contribute to clearer skin. In fact, studies have shown that lauric acid works to kill P. acnes bacteria. Let it be known that while coconut oil contains antimicrobial properties, it is not an acne cure. It works best when used with other acne-fighting ingredients, like the ones in this scrub.

Sugar For Acne

The classic advice is to stay away from sugar if you want clearer skin. Well, eliminating refined sugars from your diet is an excellent way to boost your overall health and clear up the skin. As it turns out, sugar is an excellent topical exfoliant. When scrubbed on the skin, the tiny particles that make up sugar work to remove dead skin cells and reveal the healthy skin underneath. Sugar also contains humectant properties, which help to keep your skin hydrated by drawing moisture from the environment.

DIY Grapefruit Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2-5 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 1 drop frankincense oil
  • 1 drop tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil to a heat-safe bowl and microwave it for 30-45 seconds, or until melted.
  • Pour the sugar into that bowl and mix well.
  • Add the drops of essential oils and stir to combine.
  • Spoon this mixture into a four-ounce glass jar or container.

How To Use:

  • Place a teaspoon-sized amount of the scrub in your palm and rub it on your face.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry.

Most people have a go-to skin care routine, which includes some type of cleanser, moisturizer, and maybe even a mask. Have you ever thought about adding a face scrub to your routine? Face scrubs may be some of the best ways to boost the health of your skin. Keep reading if you want to learn about how to make your own face scrubs, and what they can do for your skin.

The Benefits Of Face Scrubs

The skin is constantly exposed to environmental pollutants, in addition to oils, dirt, and the accumulation of dead skin cells. The buildup of all of these toxins can cause the skin to appear flaky, dry, old, and even run-down. Don’t you want your skin to look clean and refreshed all the time? Enter face scrubs, which help to exfoliate the skin and penetrate pores to clean them out. Unlike some commercial cleansers, face scrubs leave the face feeling hydrated and moisturized.

Why Is Exfoliation Necessary?

As we previously mentioned, old skin cells and grime accumulate on the skin. Exfoliation is the process of removing those dead skin cells to allow for the growth of newer, healthier skin cells. While exfoliation is necessary, you must remember over-exfoliating must be avoided. Exfoliating too frequently can cause inflammation, irritated skin, or dry skin.

Coffee For The Skin

The reason that both of the face scrubs in this article contain coffee grounds is because they are excellent for exfoliating. The grounds do not dissolve in water, making them excellent for scrubbing away dead skin cells. According to a 2013 study, the caffeic acid (an antioxidant) in coffee helps to boost collagen levels and reduce the amount of premature aging cells. The antimicrobial properties of caffeic acid also protect the skin from bacteria.

Detoxifying Coffee Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds
  • 5 teaspoons activated charcoal

Instructions:

  • Combine all of the ingredients into a glass jar and mix well.
  • Screw on the lid of the jar and store in a cool dry place.
  • Use this scrub to exfoliate about two or three times per week at the most.

Coffee Sugar Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons virgin unrefined coconut oil
  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ Kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 2-4 tablespoons citrus zest (use lemons, oranges, limes, or grapefruit)

Instructions:

  • Warm the coconut oil in a small saucepan over low heat. Once it is melted, pour the coconut oil into a bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Mix well.
  • Divide this scrub between four 4-ounce jars or containers with lids and store in a cool dry place.
  • When ready to use, scrub about one teaspoon onto your face in a circular motion for 60 seconds. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Most people don’t know this, but the skin is the largest organ in the body. That means that it absorbs airborne toxins or chemicals from beauty products, which make their way inside the body. Some people buy cleansers or other beauty products to get glowing, beautiful skin, but are they doing more harm than good?

When you have healthy skin, you feel more confident and sexier. Your skin, much like your overall health, shouldn’t be neglected. Giving your skin natural ingredients that work to soothe it and promote a youthful appearance is better than having it temporarily look good, while slowly contaminating it with chemicals. That’s why we recommend using an all-natural coffee sugar scrub.

Coffee is more than a drink that gives you a caffeine boost in the morning. Those grounds can do wonders for your skin, for example, helping to reduce inflammation or get rid of cellulite. Coffee grounds work to exfoliate the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells. This results in a smoother, cleaner, more hydrated face, but you can exfoliate other areas of the body too.

This coffee scrub includes cocoa butter, which is a great natural moisturizer. If you don’t want to use cocoa butter, you can also use shea butter, but cocoa butter helps the scrub hold together. You can make this for yourself, or make it in bulk and gift it to your friends and family.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 ounces virgin coconut oil
  • 2 ounces avocado oil (or sweet almond oil)
  • 25 ounces cocoa butter
  • 1 tablespoon coffee grounds
  • seeds from 1 vanilla bean (optional)

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 275º Fahrenheit. If you don’t want to use an oven, you can use a saucepan on your stove. Place the coconut oil and cocoa butter in an ovenproof loaf pan and place in the oven, or use the saucepan over low-medium flame on the stove. The melting process only takes a couple minutes.
  • Once those two are melted, remove from oven or heat. Fill a large bowl with ice and rest the saucepan/loaf pan with the coconut oil mixture in the ice. Add the avocado oil and mix to combine.
  • While the oil mixture is still in liquid form, slowly mix in the sugar. Stir in the coffee grounds and add the vanilla seeds if you are using them. Mix until you get a thick scrub.
  • Place the mixture in a glass jar and seal. Use once daily to improve skin health.

Baking soda has many uses outside the kitchen. It has been a home remedy for quite a while, especially in the world of beauty. Some people are only now tuning in to the fact that baking soda is a great option for clearing up skin or cleaning your hair. Most commercial beauty products contain numerous chemicals that can damage your hair and skin, which is why we like making simple DIY products from natural ingredients.

Did you know that there are about 10,500 chemicals used in various beauty products? Only about 11% of those chemicals have been assessed for health and safety. There are some brands that use better ingredients, but it can be difficult to discern the good from the bad when there are hard-to-pronounce ingredients all over the product.

  • It absorbs excess oil from the face and helps to unclog pores
