Avocado oil, much like avocados, is a great source of healthy fats. Through various research studies, it has demonstrated an ability to protect and support heart health. It also provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, including vitamin E and carotenoids. Not only is avocado oil nutritious, but it is also safe for high-heat cooking. You can use it in various ways to incorporate more heart-healthy fats into your diet. Continue reading to learn about five impressive health benefits of this oil.

A Great Source Of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a great nutrient that helps protect cells against oxidative damage, which could potentially increase the risk of chronic diseases. It is involved with cellular communication, metabolic processes, and immune function. Vitamin E works to support heart health by improving blood flow and preventing blood clotting. It may also prevent oxidative changes to LDL cholesterol. If there are oxidative changes to LDL cholesterol, you may have an increased risk of atherosclerosis, or plaque build-up in the arteries.

Although vitamin E is essential to your overall health, a large majority of the population in the United States doesn’t consume the recommended daily intake (RDI). In fact, studies suggest that 96% of women and 90% of men in the United States have insufficient vitamin E intake. Just two tablespoons of avocado oil can provide seven milligrams (mg) of vitamin E, which satisfies 47% of the RDI. Do your best to purchase unrefined, cold-pressed avocado oil, as that contains more vitamin E than refined versions.

May Support Heart Health

As previously mentioned, vitamin E may help improve blood flow and prevent oxidative changes to LDL cholesterol. Vitamin E is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and contains polyphenols, all of which help reduce the risk of heart disease. Using avocado oil in place of butter and other saturated fats may help reduce LDL cholesterol levels. A small study involving overweight participants monitored reactions when they replaced butter with avocado oil in a high-fat, high-carb meal. Post-meal levels of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and inflammatory markers all reduced. More research and larger studies are necessary to determine avocado oil’s full effects on heart health.

Rich In Fatty Acids

Avocado oil is composed of 71% monounsaturated fatty acids, 13% polyunsaturated fatty acids, and 16% saturated fatty acids. According to researchers, diets rich in monounsaturated fatty acids can help protect against heart disease. One study found that people who consumed monounsaturated fatty acids from plant sources had a significantly lower risk of dying from cancer and heart disease. The study showed how replacing saturated fatty acids with monounsaturated fatty acids from plant sources reduced risk of mortality. One of the primary fatty acids in avocado oil, oleic acid, may support healthy body weight by regulating appetite.

Contains Antioxidant Compounds

Some of avocado oil’s plant compounds include proanthocyanidins, polyphenols, and carotenoids. These compounds work to regulate inflammation and protect against oxidative damage. Studies confirm that diets rich in carotenoids and polyphenols can help protect against heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases. As stated earlier regarding vitamin E, the refining process of avocado oil can significantly reduce the antioxidant content. Be sure to purchase unrefined, cold-pressed avocado oil for this reason.

May Benefit Eye Health

Avocado oil and avocado are good sources of lutein, a carotenoid and antioxidant that is naturally found in the eyes. According to research, a diet rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, another carotenoid, is essential for optimal eye health. In fact, these two carotenoids may help reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, both of which are common age-related eye conditions. The body does not produce lutein on its own, so you have to obtain it through your diet. Enjoying avocado and avocado oil may help increase your lutein intake to support your eyes.

If you want to take control of your eye health, you need to consume the right nutrients to boost your vision. Carrots, celery, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and more are foods that help enhance eye care. Although dietary sources of essential nutrients are great, you may want to consider certain vitamin supplements to strengthen your vision and prevent degenerative eye conditions.

Common conditions that impact the eyes include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. Although different factors influence the development of these conditions, nutrition seems to have a positive influence on them. According to experts, the following vitamins and nutrients are the best for maintaining eye health as you age.

Vitamin C

Hold your horses, folks. We’ll get to vitamin A in just a second. For now, we are talking about vitamin C. Vitamin C and a few other nutrients are used in AREDS, a supplement that may benefit people with AMD. One study suggests that AREDS may reduce the risk of AMD progressing by 25% if you take them daily. One observational study showed a 75% reduced risk of developing cataracts when people supplemented with more than 490 milligrams (mg) per day. Another study found that daily vitamin C supplementation reduced the risk of cataracts by 45%.

Riboflavin

Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, acts as an antioxidant and may help reduce oxidative stress in the body, including the eyes. Researchers have been studying riboflavin’s potential to prevent cataracts for years. The reason for this is because riboflavin deficiency may lead to the development of cataracts. Interestingly enough, people with this condition are usually deficient in riboflavin. Health experts recommend consuming 1.1 to 1.3 mg of riboflavin per day. It’s very easy to meet this requirement because many foods are rich in this nutrient.

Vitamin A

We’ve finally reached the vitamin that plays a crucial role in maintaining a clear cornea, which is the outside covering of the eye. Vitamin A deficiency, which is a rare condition in developed countries, can lead to xerophthalmia, a serious eye condition. Xerophthalmia is a progressive eye disease that starts with night blindness. Tear ducts and eyes can dry out if vitamin A deficiency continues. Vitamin A may also protect against other eye conditions. In fact, several studies found that diets high in vitamin A may reduce the risk of AMD and cataracts.

Niacin

Another B vitamin (vitamin B3), niacin helps convert food into energy, but it also acts as an antioxidant. One observational study on Korean adults found that their risk of glaucoma decreased after consuming more niacin. An animal study found that high doses of niacin in supplement form were effective at preventing glaucoma. Just be mindful that supplements should be used with caution. Consuming niacin in high amounts of 1.5 to 5 grams (g) per day may adversely affect the eyes, blurring vision or increasing the risk of macular damage.

Vitamin E

Researchers believe that many eye conditions are associated with oxidative stress, the imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells, including those in the eyes. A seven-year study monitored over 3,640 people with AMD. The results indicated that taking 400 internal units (IUs) of vitamin E per day reduced the risk of progressing to advanced stages of AMD by almost 25%. Additional studies suggest that diets rich in vitamin E may reduce the risk of age-related cataracts. More research is still necessary on this matter, though.

Lutein And Zeaxanthin

These two beneficial compounds belong to the carotenoid family. Research shows that carotenoids exist in the macula and retina of the eyes, helping to filter potentially harmful blue light. They work to protect your eyes from damage, and studies suggest that both lutein and zeaxanthin may prevent cataracts and reduce the risk of AMD. A randomized, controlled study found potential benefits of lutein supplementation for people with cataracts. At the end of the two-year study period, study authors noted that the people who supplemented with 15 mg of lutein three times per week experienced improvements in vision

The post Simple Home Remedies For Dry Eyes appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Everyone experiences dry eyes every now and again. More often than not, dry eyes are an occasional annoyance, not a regular symptom of allergies or a more serious eye condition. Dry eye syndrome, or keratoconjunctivitis sicca, can cause daily discomfort. People with chronic dry eyes can experience blurry vision, daily discomfort, or the sensation of something being in the eye.

Whether you have dry eye syndrome, allergies, or occasional dryness, there are various home remedies that may help soothe your symptoms. You can experiment with the remedies in this article (detailed below) to see which one offers the most relief. If things do not improve, you may need to consult a medical professional to address the root cause of your dry eyes. If you haven’t reached that point, consider the following home remedies.

Apply A Warm Compress

According to a 2023 review, applying a warm compress to the eyes works to increase moisture and encourage tear production. In order to get the most out of your warm compress, follow these instructions:

 • Moisten a washcloth or small hand towel with warm water that isn’t too hot to the touch. Wring out excess water and fold it in half, or fold it so that it will cover both eyes.
 • Sit back or lie down to help the washcloth stay in place. Close your eyes and apply the warm cloth over both eyes.
 • Let the warm cloth sit on your eyes for five to 10 minutes, or until it loses its warmth.

Increase Your Fluid Intake

It stands to reason that if you are dehydrated, the body doesn’t have the available fluid to produce sufficient tears. Increase your water intake to help increase moisture in the eyes. A great rule of thumb for optimal hydration is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water per day. If you weigh 150 pounds and divide that by two to get 75, you should drink 75 ounces of water per day. You can also click here for tips to improve hydration habits.

Focus On Sleep

Closing your eyes will not solve your dry eyes problem, but getting quality shut-eye just might. Sleep experts note that poor sleep can worsen dry eye symptoms because insufficient sleep lowers tear production. Healthy sleep hygiene may help fix the issue. Aim to get seven to nine hours of sleep per night and do your best to go to bed and wake up at the same times daily.

Focus On Potassium-Rich Foods

If you include more potassium in your diet, you may improve your dry eyes. According to health experts, potassium is one of the three components of the tear film. The tear film is a thin layer that protects eyes from damage. Because potassium plays an integral role in maintaining healthy tear film, adding more potassium-rich foods to your diet may help you avoid dry eyes. Sweet potatoes, bananas, beets, white beans, spinach, and avocados are great potassium-rich foods.

Consume More Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids may help improve the function of the oil glands in the eyelids. The meibomian glands, as they are known, in the eyelids produce an oily layer. By including more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, you may aid this oil production and avoid dry eyes. While omega-3s are readily available in tuna, mackerel, cod liver oil, sardines, salmon, and trout, you can also find them in vegetarian sources, such as broccoli, spinach, flaxseeds, chia seeds, kale, and cauliflower.

Use A Humidifier

Both heating systems and air conditioning can cause eyes to dry out, which results in dry eye symptoms. In order to slow dehydration, try to use a humidifier to add moisture into the air. If you don’t have a humidifier, you can click here to learn how to naturally humidify a space.

Take Eye Breaks

If you are engaged in a task that will take a long time to complete, make sure to take eye breaks, especially if you are looking at a computer screen. In fact, it can be beneficial to take a couple eye breaks per hour if you look at screens all day. To do an eye break, close your eyes for a couple minutes, or blink 10 times slowly. That can help you spread your tears more evenly across the eyes.

Too much sugar can worsen your vision. It impacts your vision by resulting in high blood sugar levels which damage the tiny blood vessels of the retina at the back of the eye. If this damage remains untreated, it can lead to vision loss and blindness. You should be checked for diabetic retinopathy immediately if you’re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Treating diabetic vision loss can repair damage to the eye and even prevent blindness in most people if caught early. Treatment includes laser therapy, surgery, and injections.

Vitamin A doubles as a fat-soluble vitamin and an antioxidant, so getting enough of it on a daily basis can help you maintain overall health. The general recommended daily intake (RDI) for adult men is 900 micrograms (mcg) per day, while adult women should consume 700 mcg per day. Children and adolescents should ideally consume between 300-600 mcg of vitamin A per day.

Vitamin A exists both in plant and animal foods and comes in two different forms: preformed vitamin provitamin A. The former is the active form of vitamin A, which the body can use as it is, while the latter exists in animal products and includes several compounds, including retinal, retinol, and retinoic acid. Some provitamin A carotenoids include beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and alpha-carotene, all of which are the inactive form of the vitamin and found in plants. When you consume those compounds, the body converts them to the vitamin’s active form in the body. Now, let’s take a look at a few of the ways that vitamin A benefits the body.

Supports Optimal Immune Function

Vitamin A works to support several of the body’s natural defenses. For example, it helps to enhance the function of mucus barriers in the eyes, lungs, gut, and genitals to help trap bacteria and other pathogens. Vitamin A also aids the production of white blood cells, which work to cleanse bacteria and other pathogens from the bloodstream. A deficiency in vitamin A, then, can reduce the body’s ability to recover from sickness. On the other hand, it makes the body more susceptible to infections.

Keeps Your Skin Glowing

Dermatologists tend to prescribe vitamin A to help fight acne and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. One study found that the topical application of retinol to the skin significantly reduced fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, retinol increased the skin’s ability to withstand injury. Vitamin A exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, such as retinaldehyde, which may help reduce symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

Supports Bone Health

A lot of people tend to focus on protein, calcium, and vitamin D when it comes to bone health. These three nutrients encourage healthier bones, but vitamin A is also necessary for proper growth and development. Plus, research indicates that lacking vitamin A has been linked to poor bone health and a higher risk of fractures. A recent meta-analysis of observational studies found that people with higher amounts of total vitamin A in their diet had a 6% reduced risk of fractures. That said, researchers observed that people who consumed a lot of vitamin A also had a higher risk of fractures. That means that the link between vitamin A and bone health is not fully understood and more trials and studies are necessary.

Relieves Inflammation

Beta-carotene acts as an antioxidant in the body and works to reduce free radical build-up. It may also protect cells from inflammation and oxidative stress. Inflammation is the root cause of many chronic health conditions, from heart disease to diabetes. By reducing inflammation, you also lower your risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Researchers note that vitamin A also improved symptoms of other inflammatory conditions, including Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Protects The Eyes

Potentially the most well-known benefit of vitamin A is that it supports eye health. Researchers attribute this ability to the rhodopsin molecule, which activates when light shines on the retina and sends a signal to the brain that results in vision. Beta-carotene also plays a role in prevention of macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of age-related blindness. One study monitored people, who had a high risk for macular degeneration, who took a daily multivitamin that included vitamins A, C, & E, zinc, and copper. They experience a 25% reduction in advanced macular degeneration during a six-year period.

Contains Cancer-Fighting Properties

A growing body of research suggests a strong link between what you eat and your risk of cancer. Vitamin A influences the health of your cells, so its influence on cancer prevention is of great interest to researchers. During observational studies, participants who ate higher amounts of vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene experienced decreased risks of cervical, lung, and bladder cancers. It’s important to note that high intakes of vitamin from plant-based foods have been associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers. Vitamin A from animal-based foods have not yielded the same results. At the moment, more research is necessary to fully understand the relationship between vitamin A levels in the body and cancer risk.
