Everyone knows when they are about to come down with a sore throat or cold. Be it the tickle in back of your throat or slight irritation in your nose, you just know. Once you start coughing or have difficulty breathing, perhaps you grab the decongestant and lather it all over your throat and chest. Some people put it under their feet and some want to really inhale the menthol, so they rub some under their nostrils.

If you are congested and want to breathe easier, you may look to essential oils instead of a classic vapor rub. Some essential oils, including eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils, show particular promise, while others are not as effective at relieving sinus congestion. Other research indicates that essential oils may improve symptoms related to congestion. For example, some may help reduce inflammation, fight bacteria, and relieve pain.

A Quick Note About Essential Oil Dilution

The key to using essential oils safely is proper dilution. For adults, a 5% dilution is generally safe. That means that 30 drops of essential oils per one ounce of carrier oil, or 15 drops essential oils per 10 milliliters (ml) of carrier oil. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, a 1% dilution is best. Six drops of essential oils per ounce of carrier oil, or three drops essential oils per 10 ml of carrier oil. You can use the same pregnant or breastfeeding dilution ratio for children.

For this recipe, you will use a half-cup of olive oil, 1/8 cup of beeswax pastilles, and 150 drops of essential oils. You can choose the amount of drops you wish to use from the following list of essential oils that help promote decongestion

Peppermint Essential Oil

A lot of people find that peppermint oil has a cooling effect and may improve symptoms of sinusitis. Because it contains menthol, peppermint essential oil may open the airways by affecting mucus receptors in the nose. According to lab studies, peppermint oil may fight bacteria, a primary trigger of sinus congestion. You can try to add peppermint essential oil to a warm bath to help reduce stuffiness.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains alpha-sabine, a compound that exhibits anti-viral, antibacterial, and antifungal activity. Researchers believe that tea tree oil helps relieve sinus congestion by fighting bacteria and viruses in the airways. It’s also possible that tea tree oil reduces inflammation, which may bring down swelling in the sinuses. By reducing swelling you can relieve symptoms of congestion, such as runny or stuffy nose.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is a common ingredient in chest rubs and other over-the-counter decongestants. It shows promise as an alternative remedy for sinusitis and congestion. Similar to peppermint essential oil, you can add eucalyptus essential oil to a warm bath to promote decongestion. Eucalyptus oil contains ceneole, which was proven to be safe and effective for sinus issues in several small studies. It helped to improve symptoms of sinusitis, including nasal obstruction, headaches, and runny nose.

Essential Oil Chest Rub Decongestant

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 beeswax pastilles
  • 150 drops essential oils of choice

Instructions:

  • In the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat, melt the olive oil and beeswax together. Stir frequently to melt evenly.
  • When the two ingredients are fully melted, remove from the heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes. You can put it back over the heat and add more oil if the mixture is too hard, or add more beeswax if it is too soft.
  • Add the 150 drops of essential oils (your selection) and mix well to combine. Immediately pour the mixture into a four-ounce mason jar. Cover and let cool at room temperature.
  • Apply to the chest and/or the neck area during a cold to help reduce coughing and promote better breathing.

Sweating is a natural part of life, and it is a necessary bodily function. It is the body’s way of regulating core temperature. The unfortunate reality is that with sweating comes a certain type of stink. This is where deodorant enters the equation. Everybody needs deodorant, even if some people don’t want to admit it. Deodorant is an everyday hygiene product that keeps you smelling fresh.

Interestingly enough, though, sweat isn’t the main cause of body odor. When sweat combines with the bacteria that already exist on the skin, you smell an unpleasant aroma. The body has two primary sweat glands: eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands. Eccrine glands secrete fluid onto the skin’s surface, while apocrine glands, which develop in areas with hair follicles, secrete fluid that is odorless until it mixes with bacteria on the skin. How do you stop the stench, especially with natural deodorant? Continue reading to find out.

Baking Soda

Baking soda works to absorb odors, which is why people leave an open box of baking soda in the fridge if there’s a bad smell. Due to the ability to absorb odors, baking soda has become a popular ingredient in homemade deodorants and other beauty products. The reported benefits of baking soda as a deodorant are merely anecdotal, though. One study, however, suggests that the antimicrobial benefits of baking soda may be the reason it fights off odors and bacteria in the armpits. The pros of using a homemade deodorant with baking soda is that it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals that are in most deodorants. Some of these chemicals include parabens, aluminum, artificial colors, and triclosan. Not all of these are endocrine disruptors, but some of them are.

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil

The beauty of this essential oil is that it smells like a milder version of citronella. Not only does it make you smell amazing, but it may also help you repel mosquitos! That last part may not be true, by the way. You get the sweet, enchanting aroma of eucalyptus and the refreshing natural citrus scent from the lemon. It helps to leave your skin cool and fresh, and the great part is that it is gender neutral. Should you want a different scent, though, you can change the essential oil to one that you prefer.

Coconut Oil

It seems that coconut oil ends up in all sorts of DIY beauty products, and for good reason. The theory behind adding coconut oil to this DIY deodorant is that it has antibacterial properties, which may fight off odor-causing bacteria. Now, if you go to a spin class, coconut oil alone will not protect you from odor. Some experts argue that coconut oil may not be the best ingredient for homemade deodorant. The reason for this is because it is a thicker oil, which may not allow your sweat glands to breathe. Additionally, it may melt down your armpits because it has a low viscosity at body temperature.

DIY Deodorant For Summer

Ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 20 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil

Instructions:

  • Combine all the ingredients, except the essential oil, in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir with a wooden spoon until everything is melted and well-combined.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat source and allow it to cool off four about a minute.
  • Carefully pour the melted mixture into a glass jar and then add the essential oils. Stir with a wooden utensil to combine.
  • Allow it to cool completely until it forms a creamy consistency, and then you can screw the top of the jar on. Store in a cool, dark place and it will last for up to three months.
  • To use, scoop a pea-sized amount with your fingertip and apply under your armpit. Make sure your fingers are dry.

If you start to feel a stuffy nose, you likely know what lies ahead. Before long, you feel a lot of sinus pressure and you cannot drain them properly. Perhaps you feel a headache from either the intense nose blowing or general congestion. You most likely have a sinus infection, or one has begun to brew.

What Is A Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection, or sinusitis, is the inflammation of tissues in the sinuses. Your sinuses are the spaces in your forehead, cheeks, and nose typically filled with air. A sinus infection can cause facial pain, stuffy or runny nose, and occasional fever. More often than not, you can attribute a sinus infection to the common cold, but other viruses, fungi, bacteria, and allergies can cause sinusitis.

If you experience long-term sinus infections, then you may have forgotten what it’s like to breathe properly. Is one nostril always clogged? There is no need to live with blocked sinuses, especially when there are many natural remedies that can relieve sinus pressure

Is It Sinusitis, COVID-19, A Cold, Or An Allergy?

Colds, allergies, sinus infections, and COVID-19 have very similar symptoms. The common cold typically builds, peaks, and then slowly disappears. It can last anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. Nasal allergies cause itchy eyes and nose, sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip. Allergies don’t tend to cause the same facial pain the sinus infections do. Additionally, COVID-19 tends to cause symptoms like shortness of breath and fever.

If you want to avoid over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and experiment with natural remedies to help promote healthy sinuses, experiment with essential oils. The following remedies can help with nasal decongestion.

Steam Inhalation

This blend works to promote drainage and helps clear out the sinuses. In order to do this, you’ll need to follow the recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 3 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • A blow of hot, steaming water

Instructions:

  • Five to 10 minutes before you engage in this natural remedy, clear your nasal passages by blowing your nose. You can use a xylitol-based sinus spray to enhance the clearing if you want.
  • Add your essential oils to a large, non-reactive bowl filled with boiling water.
  • Grab a large towel, cover your head with it, and lean over the bowl, allowing the towel to create a tent over the bowl.
Keep your eyes closed and inhale the steam vapors for five to 10 minutes. Repeat several times per day.

The Cajeput Bath

Cajeput essential oil is distilled from the branches and leaves of the cajeput tree. This is a subtype of melaleuca, which is indigenous to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia. It is a strong, antiseptic oil that can directly combat sinusitis, especially when inhaled via steam vapors.

Ingredients:

  • 6 drops cajeput essential oil
  • 1 tbsp jojoba oil

Instructions:

  • Add the cajeput essential oil and jojoba oil to a small glass bowl and stir to combine.
  • Draw a warm bath and add the oil mixture to the running water. The water doesn’t have to be very hot.
  • Soak in the bath for 15 minutes and repeat this treatment once per day until symptoms subside.

Warm Compress

For this remedy, you essentially soak a cloth in warm water that contains various essential oils. You then drape that soaked cloth over the nose and sinus area for as long as you desire. This should help clear the nasal passages

Ingredients:

  • 1 drop of each eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, tea tree, and lavender essential oils
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 clean piece of cloth

Instructions:

  • Pour one cup of warm water in a non-reactive bowl and stir in the essential oils.
  • Soak your cloth in the bowl of infused water. Wring out enough water so the cloth doesn’t drip.
  • Place the cloth over your nose and sinus area for as long as you want. Repeat often, but be careful to not allow the mixture to drip into your eyes.

Diffusing Blend

If you are not the type of person to hover your face over a steamy bowl of sinus-cleansing vapors, a sinus relief blend in a diffuser may be more your speed.

Ingredients:

  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 3 drops thyme essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the essential oils to a diffuser with some water and turn on the diffuser. Make sure that your diffuser can diffuse essential oils before you add them.
  • If you don’t like that blend, you can use the same measurements for marjoram, lavender, and myrtle essential oils, respectively.

When you have a stuffy nose, there is no better feeling than that moment when you finally breathe out of both nostrils. It’s a break from the blockage and any congested headache pain that existed before vanishes, if only for a brief moment. A quick way to achieve this state of easy breathing when you have a cold is by using a vapor rub

Have you checked the ingredients on store bought vapor rubs lately? Some of those ingredients are not kind to your skin, but you can make your own healthier version with all-natural ingredients. It doesn’t take long to make the rub in this article and it is fully customizable. For example, if you prefer to use different essential oils than the ones in the recipe, feel free to do so. The essential oils that we detail in this article simply have a proven ability to promote better, easier breathing

According to some studies and anecdotal reports, essential oils can help improve cold symptoms. Most of the human studies in existence show that essential oils can fight bacteria, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. Because of these abilities, essential oils may help relieve many symptoms associated with congestion or coughing. Below, we will highlight several essential oils that may help improve breathing and get rid of a stuffy nose.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Inhaling peppermint essential oil’s aroma has a cooling effect that may help open your airways, allowing for easier breathing. Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which is a compound that affects mucus receptors in the nose. Menthol works to clear mucus and improve your ability to breathe with ease. Lab studies found that peppermint essential oil may fight bacteria, one of the primary culprits behind sinus congestion. This is why many nasal decongestants contain peppermint or peppermint essential oil.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil shows promise as one of the best alternative remedies for sinusitis and congestion. In fact, many over-the-counter decongestant products, including chest rubs, contain eucalyptus essential oil. Eucalyptus essential oil is often used in steam rooms or steam baths because it aids breathing and may relieve stuffiness. Researchers identified that cineole, a compound in eucalyptus essential oil, works to relieve sinusitis symptoms, including headaches, nasal obstruction, and runny nose.

Tea Tree Oil

The way that tea tree oil works to improve sinus congestion is by fighting bacteria and viruses, two potential causes of congestion. A 2015 review noted that the alpha-sabine in tea tree oil exhibits antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Tea tree oil may also reduce inflammation, which may bring down swelling in the sinuses to ultimately relieve symptoms of congestion.

DIY Vapor Rub

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax pastilles
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil and beeswax pastilles to the top of a double boiler and melt over medium-low heat. Alternatively, you can place the coconut oil and beeswax pastilles in a heat-safe glass bowl and melt in the microwave, but this may take longer.
  • Once the mixture is fully melted, allow it to cool for a few minutes before stirring in the essential oils. Let it cool for a while until semi-hardened.
  • Use an electric mixer to whip the mixture until fluffy, and then spoon it into a glass jar. Store it in a cool, dry place.
  • To use, rub a small amount on your chest when you have cough or cold symptoms.

Do you ever open your drawers or closet and have to step away because of an unpleasant aroma? Your first instinct is to grab the air freshener and liberally spray it all over the culprit area. Not only do air fresheners temporarily mask the scent, but they also pollute your space with harmful chemicals. That is why it’s much safer and more effective to use the all-natural air freshener jars in this article.

The Problem With Commercial Air Fresheners

The problem with many commercial air deodorizers or air fresheners is the long list of toxins. Chemicals in these products, specifically the phthalates, and formaldehyde, can cause rashes, dizziness, headaches, and throat irritation. These chemical compounds are also known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to several studies, exposure to VOCs can cause adverse health effects, including loss of coordination, liver damage, and damage to the central nervous system. Researchers identified some VOCs as suspected or proven carcinogens. Long-term exposure to VOCs can also increase the risk of asthma and certain types of cancer.

Formaldehyde, for example, is a common ingredient in many household air fresheners and cleaners. You can also find it in home furnishings, household paints, and certain textiles. That makes formaldehyde very difficult to avoid, but limiting your exposure is an important first step. Unfortunately, phthalates are also problematic VOCs that are in a lot of air freshening products. Phthalates help distribute fragrances, but they also can disrupt the body’s hormone levels, which can affect your overall health and well-being.

The said reality is that products that have “all-natural” on the label can still contain VOCs. Homemade air freshening products, on the other hand, give you full control over what goes into them. We detail the ingredients for the air freshener jars below.

Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is a staple in the non-toxic cleaning world. It is mildly abrasive, eco-friendly, affordable, and great for getting rid of built-up grime. Baking soda is known for its ability to absorb and neutralize unpleasant odors. The “why” behind baking soda’s ability to do this has to do with chemistry. Most smells are acidic in nature, and baking soda works to neutralize pH levels. To put it simply, baking soda’s basic pH is perfect for neutralizing acids that cause foul odors.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil’s aroma is very relaxing and studies show that it can promote better sleep. Various studies also confirmed that lavender has a soothing effect that can reduce stress levels. Another benefit of lavender is that it has properties that may be able to repel certain insects, particularly moths, making it great for closets, dresser drawers, and line closets. You can use both dried lavender and lavender essential oil to maximize the effects of lavender, and make the scent last longer.

Eucalyptus

Similar to baking soda, eucalyptus has an ability to neutralize foul odors in the home. A simple sprig of eucalyptus is enough to create a pleasant aroma in a room. Eucalyptus essential oil is even more powerful, as it is distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. It exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, which may help combat certain chemicals in the air. Finally, eucalyptus essential oil acts as a natural decongestant when you inhale it, making it great for your home. Who doesn’t want to breathe better when they walk into a room?!

DIY Air Freshener Jars

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1/2 cup dried lavender buds
  • Sprigs of eucalyptus (optional)
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Instructions:

  • Pour the baking soda into a large bowl and add the dried lavender and optional eucalyptus leaves. Mix well to combine.
  • Add in the essential oils and continue to mix before transferring the mixture into small, wide-mouth mason jars.
  • Use your mason jar lid insert as a guide to trace and cut a circular piece of brown paper bag. Any type of paper will work for this step, for example, wrapping paper or card stock.
  • Using a needle, poke holes into the circular pieces of paper, making sure that you do it over a carpet or towel to protect your counter or desk.
  • Place the circular pieces of paper on the tops of your mason jars and screw on the lids to secure the paper. The tiny holes allow the wonderful aromas to freshen up your space.

Do you find that you come home after a long day and your feet regularly feel dead? Whether it’s from standing all day, running for miles, or walking around the mall, sore feet that ache are no fun. You may resort to foot creams and give yourself a foot rub, but how much relief does that provide? It’s time to board the essential oils train because they may help you get back up and moving quickly.

There are several ways to help relieve foot pain with essential oils. If you want to pamper your feet, you may want to make a soothing essential oil foot bath. You soak your feet in warm water, Epsom salt, and about 10-20 drops of your favorite healing essential oil. Soak your feet for about 20 minutes while you relax. Consider listening to an audiobook or podcast that puts you in your happy place. By the end of the 20 minutes, you should notice a sense of relief and reduction in swelling.

If you don’t have the time to soak your feet in an essential oil foot bath, consider applying essential oils topically to your soles. The important thing to remember is to dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil of your choice. You may need to dilute differently, depending on which essential oil you use, as some are more potent than others. Generally, though, you mix three to four drops of an essential oil with a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage that mixture into your feet. The following essential oils should help soothe your feet if they ever feel achy or sore.

Lavender Essential Oil

Commonly used in aromatherapy to calm the mind, lavender essential oil promotes feelings of relaxation. It may help relieve joint and muscle pain, in addition to calming some inflammatory skin conditions. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties are responsible for the pain-relieving properties, especially for tight muscles. Some research indicates that it works to ease pain by increasing circulation to the area where you apply it.

Cypress Essential Oil

Cypress essential oil is made from the stems, young twigs, and needles of the cypress evergreen tree. The primary constituents of this essential oil are alpha-pinene and limonene, which work to stimulate blood flow. When you apply it topically on the skin, it provides the area with an energizing lift. Additionally, researchers identified that the antispasmodic properties in cypress essential oil may help alleviate muscle pulls and foot cramping.

Peppermint Essential Oil

According to several studies, peppermint essential oil works to relieve pain in two ways. First, it provides a calming, cooling sensation that can be somewhat tingly. That works to provide quick relief, but it also exhibits powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can quickly reduce swelling after topical application. The antimicrobial properties in peppermint essential oil may alleviate pain associated with athlete’s foot. Plus, the minty aroma helps to keep your feet smelling fresh.

Marjoram Essential Oil

Like cypress essential oil, marjoram essential oil exhibits antispasmodic properties, making it great for your sore, tired foot muscles. Marjoram belongs to the mint family and is related to basil, thyme, oregano, and sage. It is a great essential oil that you can apply after exercise to accelerate muscle recovery. The analgesic properties in the essential oil may also help alleviate mild pain. Lastly, marjoram is similar to lavender in that it helps promote a sense of calm and relaxation, relieving stress and allowing the body to release tension.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is commonly used to help promote decongestion and relieve stress. It also works to promote relaxation, which is why it is infused into steam rooms. Similar to peppermint essential oil, eucalyptus has a cooling effect that may help alleviate muscle pain. The anti-inflammatory properties may also relieve the pain of tired feet. Because it is an analgesic, eucalyptus may help numb the area after topical application, providing you with some much-need relief.

The sinuses in your head are air-filled cavities that contain pillowy glands that produce mucus. In addition to making your head lighter and easier to move, sinuses help you tilt and turn your head. Sinuses filter, warm, and moisturize the air that you breathe and can shape the sound of your voice. They also act like airbags, protecting the brain and other important tissues if you experience facial trauma.

A stuffy nose is a common nuisance that can occur any time of year, whether or not you have allergies. During the fall and spring, however, people seem to experience more sniffling because of the changing temperature, smells, and colors. There is a lot of pollen in the air during fall and school is newly back in session. The combination of HVAC systems and yearly viruses circulating the office and classrooms can do a real number on your sinuses. If you have allergies, they cause inflammation of the mucus membranes in the sinuses, which can cause itchiness, congestion, or sneezing.

When your nose is stuffed, your sinuses cannot properly filter, warm, and moisturize the air you breathe. Sinuses cannot drain as they should to keep the body healthy, and mucus remains inside them, which can increase the risk of bacterial or viral growth. That’s why you need to help unclog them as quickly as you can, and one way you can do that is by using a sinus relief balm. It contains powerful essential oils that are comparable to over-the-counter decongestants! Learn more about them below.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Get ready to breathe easier with eucalyptus essential oil in your life. You can typically find it in chest rubs and over-the-counter decongestant products because it is a common remedy for congestion or sinusitis. Eucalyptus essential oil contains cineole, a compound that may be a safe and effective treatment for sinus issues, according to a 2009 study. Research also found that cineole may help relieve symptoms associated with congestion, including headaches, runny nose, and nasal obstruction.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil is very popular in DIY beauty products, especially ones for hair care. This is because rosemary may promote hair growth by nourishing hair follicles. In regards to your sinuses, though, a 2016 review observed rosemary essential oil’s anti-inflammatory properties. The oil may help to relieve swollen sinuses and the antioxidants may work to manage metabolic syndrome, but more research is needed in that field.

Lavender Essential Oil

Not only does lavender essential oil help promote a sense of calm and better sleep, but it also may relieve symptoms of sinus congestion. It works to curb headaches and may ease seasonal aggravations that can cause congestion. According to an animal 2015 study, lavender essential oil exhibited analgesic and pain-relieving effects, which may reduce inflammation. Researchers cannot confirm if the oil has the same effect on humans, though, as it needs more testing. Given that lavender essential oil can promote sleep, it is beneficial to use when you’re congested

Lemon Essential Oil

The decongestant effects of lemon essential oil may be comparable to those of eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils. Extracted from lemon rinds, lemon essential oil exhibits powerful decongestant and antibacterial properties. These properties may enhance immune function and manage sinus infections by fighting bacteria, which may exist in your sinuses.

DIY Sinus Relief Body Balm

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 ounces beeswax pastilles
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
  • 12 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 6 drops lemon essential oil
  • 8 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

  • To begin, fill the bottom half of your double boiler pot with water until it is about halfway full. Place it over medium-high heat and then add the beeswax pastilles to the top portion of the double boiler.
  • Stir occasionally to ensure the beeswax breaks up properly. Once the beeswax starts to melt, pour the coconut oil and sweet almond oil into the bowl with the beeswax. Stir until completely melted and then turn off the heat.
  • Add all of the essential oils to the mixture and stir to combine. Pour the mixture into balm containers and set the containers on the counter to cool at room temperature.
  • Once the balms cool to a solid, screw on the lids and you’re good to go!
  • When ready to use, place a small pea-sized amount of balm on your fingertips and rub it onto your chest and neck, or lightly dab under your nose. This will help open up your sinuses and promote decongestion. Make sure you rub the balm in well and apply to the back of the neck if you have head congestion.

People aren’t the only ones who love to spend time outdoors when the temperatures rise. Mosquitos, flies, and ticks buzz around and bite as many people as they can. Mosquito bites tend to be small, itchy, and annoying, while bites from ticks can be more serious and increase the risk of Lyme disease. There are some people who get bit by mosquitos and experience large, swollen bumps that take a couple days to disappear.

The most common way to repel mosquitos is by spraying yourself with DEET, according to a 2018 survey. The reason for this is because DEET spray has the longest lasting effect against these buzzing pests. There are more concerns about the side effects of using DEET, including redness, swelling, skin irritation, and rash. DEET does pose several dangers to the body, even though the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that you don’t need to worry.

If you don’t want to coat yourself in harmful chemicals, there are several ways to thwart mosquitos during the summer. One survey found that 36% of people prefer to use natural repellents and tactics to prevent mosquito bites instead of using DEET spray. Learn about effective mosquito-repelling tips below.

Catnip Oil

People know about catnip for the effect it has on cats, but they don’t know that it is a unique culinary herb and mosquito repellant. Catnip oil is acquired from catnip via steam distillation, but applying it on the skin will not attract cats to you. The process of extracting the oil gets rid of the effect it has on cats. According to the EPA, catnip oil may effectively repel mosquitos for up to seven hours.

Change Your Light Bulbs

Mosquitos are attracted to light, but not all kinds of it. They tend to buzz towards standard light bulbs. To prevent mosquitos from swarming your house, install some LEDs, sodium lamps, or yellow bug lights. These lights may reduce the number of mosquitos that buzz near entrances to your home.

Remove Standing Water

If you want to limit the amount of mosquitos in or around your home, make sure that you eliminate all standing water. Getting rid of standing water makes it so mosquitos and other insects cannot breed easily. Clear out gutters to avoid clogs, remove tarps or debris that collect water, and change the water in your birdbath frequently. Additionally, don’t let a kiddie pool sit out overnight without emptying the water the night before.

Lemon Eucalyptus

A 2014 study found that lemon eucalyptus essential oil offered 100% protection against mosquitos for up to 12 hours. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classified lemon eucalyptus essential oil as an EPA-registered repellent. Because of this, it is an active ingredient in many mosquito repellents.

Buy Some Plants

There are several plants that deter insects like ticks, mosquitos, and flies. Citronella, for example, produces natural oils that help keep mosquitos at bay. Other flowers, including petunias, rosemary, geraniums, floss flowers, sage, marigolds, and chrysanthemums work to effectively repel mosquitos and other insects. You can learn more about that by clicking here

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint essential oil exhibits an array of health benefits. Some people use it to clear up congestion, while others use it to help promote wound healing. Several studies revealed that peppermint oil is a natural insecticide and mosquito repellent. You can mix this peppermint essential oil with other scents, including lemon essential oil, and a carrier oil. Apply the mixture to the skin before you go outside to repel mosquitos. A quick tip about essential oils is to do a small patch test on your arm to see whether you have a reaction to the oil or not.

Snoring can interfere with a good night’s sleep, either for you or the person who sleeps next to you. There are nights that snoring is so ferocious that it is impossible to drown out the noise. Since sleeping with noise canceling headphones isn’t the most comfortable, it’s time to find a better way to handle the problem. If you or someone you know has to deal with snoring, the essential oils in this article may come to your rescue.

What Causes Snoring?

There are several factors that contribute to snoring. Alcohol consumption, body weight, allergies, general congestion, and the anatomy of the mouth can all cause snoring. After you fall asleep and transition from light sleep to deep sleep, the muscles in the roof of the mouth, tongue, and throat relax. The tissues in the throat relax enough to partially block the airway and vibrate. Airflow becomes more forceful the more narrow the airway is, increasing the tissue vibration that causes louder snoring.

Because snoring has several different causes, different remedies may work to address specific causes. Essential oils can be a great way to naturally combat snoring, but they won’t always work to get rid of snoring. If snoring is caused by general congestion, colds, or allergies, essential oils are a great place to start. Use the following oils to help encourage healthier breathing and reduce or eliminate snoring.

Thyme Essential Oil

Arguably one of the best essential oils for snoring, thyme essential oil works to improve respiratory health and soothe the nervous system. This combination may lead to better breathing and sleep. The scent is fresh, herbaceous, and helps to support immune function. If snoring is a result of asthma, bronchitis, or laryngitis symptoms, thyme essential oil is an excellent choice for your diffuser

Vetiver Essential Oil

A lot of sleep experts recommend people to use vetiver oil to reduce snoring. Vetiver essential oil works to improve breathing by allowing you to inhale and exhale more fully. Improving airflow is a great step towards reducing snoring. As a bonus, several studies show that vetiver essential oil may reduce anxiety and promote better sleep.

Marjoram Essential Oil

The effectiveness of marjoram essential oil as a snoring remedy varies from person to person. This is because each person reacts to marjoram’s aroma, or any aroma for that matter, in a different way. A few studies of people who snored reported that participants stopped snoring on the first night using marjoram essential oil. Other snorers had to use it in a diffuser for six weeks to stop snoring. It works to open up the airway passages, which is why experts believe it helps you to not snore.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus is one of the best herbal decongestants in existence, helping to open your airways with its anti-inflammatory properties. Working to clear out mucus in the nose and respiratory tract, eucalyptus essential oil eases your ability to breathe freely. For the best results, eucalyptus essential oil is best taken via steam inhalation. It exhibits a strong, earthy, woody aroma that is quite wonderful.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Similar to eucalyptus essential oil, peppermint essential oil helps promote decongestion. By allowing you to breathe more easily, peppermint essential oil is great for relieving symptoms of sinusitis and asthma. This essential oil also happens to be a popular snoring remedy. The active ingredient, menthol, exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that help clear up your airways. Peppermint has a cool refreshing aroma and combining it with lavender essential oil in a diffuser is a great way to promote relaxation and healthier sleep.

Essential oils have been used by generations of people across many different cultures for natural treatment of ailments. Historians say that herbal remedies date back as far as the Paleolithic period, 60,000 years ago. Some cultures used essential oils for wound healing, while others used them to fight off infections like the common cold.

Unlike pharmaceuticals, a single plant, herb, fruit, or vegetable exhibits a multitude of health properties. Lavender, for example, exhibits anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-anxiety, and antidepressant properties. Like many natural remedies, essential oils have more anecdotal evidence than research-backed scientific evidence. Nevertheless, essential oils are very popular in the world of natural remedies and alternative medicine.

Many people incorporate essential oils into DIY health and beauty products, but inhaling their aroma via a diffuser may be great for relieving cough and cold symptoms. Next time you have a cough or experience congestion, consider experimenting with the following essential oils. There are even studies that support their abilities to relieve symptoms!

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Exhibiting a forest-like scent, eucalyptus essential oil has antiviral and antimicrobial properties. For anyone who has been in a eucalyptus-scented steam room, breathing the aroma works to relieve chest congestion and aid breathing. The menthol in eucalyptus helps to warm the nasal cavity while causing an immune response, a combination that helps accelerate recovery. One study found that the antimicrobial properties may fight off bacteria that cause cough or cold symptoms.

Lavender Essential Oil

There are many studies surrounding lavender essential oil. It may help to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, improve sleep, improve mood, and relieve a hacking cough. Due to the antimicrobial properties, lavender essential oil works to fight bacteria and viruses responsible for respiratory infections. It’s best to inhale the aroma through a diffuser, but you can also put some under your pillow at night, which may promote relaxation in the process.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil is great for boosting hair growth, but it is also known for its healing properties. Many aromatherapists use rosemary essential oil because it soothes the respiratory system by decreasing congestion and making it easier to breathe. Other studies confirm that rosemary essential oil works to break up mucus and reduce inflammation. Researchers attribute these abilities to the primary compound cineole, which is a natural monoterpene.

Peppermint Essential Oil

According to a 2013 study, peppermint essential oil can be used to help relax the muscles of the windpipe, the bronchial muscles. Researchers believe this is why inhaling the oil’s aroma eases breathing in people with coughs. Peppermint essential oil also contains menthol, which provides a cooling sensation upon inhalation that can numb or soothe a sore throat. Menthol also works to fight off bacteria in the respiratory tract, while simultaneously opening the sinuses and reducing congestion.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is one of the most common essential oils in the world of natural beauty and alternative remedies. Several studies show that the anti-inflammatory properties may work well against cold-related symptoms, including sore throat and chest congestion. Inhaling tea tree oil’s aroma may protect against respiratory infections and seasonal allergies. One study found that tea tree oil exhibits antiviral properties, which may work to fight viruses or bacteria that lead to the common cold.

Oregano Essential Oil

A tried and true remedy for coughs and colds, oregano essential oil acts as an expectorant to clear up chest and sinus congestion. If you have a respiratory tract infection, this is great news, as chest congestion can increase the pain of coughing. Oregano essential oil also has a warm and welcoming scent, which can promote better sleep. Adding a few drops to a diffuser or under your pillow can help you sleep better and breathe through the night.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme essential oil contains thymol, which exhibits antibacterial activity that may be effective against respiratory ailments like asthma or bronchitis. The oil also has a high level of carvacrol, which may be helpful in protecting against viruses and bacteria. Next time you have a sore throat, put thyme essential oil in a diffuser to ease your cough and breathing. Similar to oregano essential oil, thyme essential oil exhibits an herbaceous scent that may improve sleep.
