Have you been thinking about adding more natural items to your skin care routine? If you have, then this Epsom salt body scrub is a great place to start. After purchasing all of the ingredients, each jar you make ends up costing around two dollars. How incredible is that?! Not only can this be an excellent item to add to your skin care routine, but it also makes for a great gift for the upcoming holiday season. Decorate the jars to make the product a little more festive.

Normally, people put Epsom salt in their baths to help soothe sore muscles and inflammatory skin conditions. Believe it or not, Epsom salt makes for a highly efficient body scrub. After you take a shower, gently massage wet skin with a handful of the scrub in this recipe. The coarseness of the salt crystals works to slough away dead skin cells. Epsom salt’s anti-inflammatory properties help prevent irritation during the exfoliating process. Rinse away the body scrub and then follow with a moisturizing body cream.

Epsom Salt Benefits

Epsom salts are a type of mineral salt found in nature. This type of salt is rich in magnesium and sulfate, and the salt is very coarse, but it is not meant for cooking. Skin care experts note that you can use Epsom salt to remove dead skin from the face, body, and scalp. Some people also use it on the skin to relieve itchiness from poison ivy or mosquito bites. It also helps to soften skin affected by psoriasis, which causes scaly patches on the skin.

Coconut Oil Benefits

Coconut oil may help prevent and treat skin rashes, such as atopic dermatitis. One study found that coconut oil extract was able to improve skin barrier function. Scientists believe that coconut oil works to strengthen the skin barrier for infants with a low birth weight, potentially protecting them from health complications. Coconut oil may also help to reduce inflammation that results from UVB rays. Cellular studies indicate that coconut oil exhibits anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antiviral activity.

Peppermint Essential Oil

The antimicrobial and antiseptic properties in peppermint essential oil may help reduce the appearance of pimples and other blemishes. Because it contains menthol, it offers a cooling sensation when topically applied to the skin or scalp. Researchers note that applying peppermint essential oil topically (only when properly diluted to avoid skin irritation) stimulates blood flow to the skin, which may enhance skin tone. Finally, peppermint essential oil helps regulate sebum production, making it great for oily, combination, or acne-prone skin.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

According to lab studies, eucalyptus essential oil may increase the production of ceramide, which helps moisturize skin, reduce inflammation, and prevent UVB-induced collagen degradation. Researchers have observed that cineole, the active compound in eucalyptus essential oil, has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. Additionally, topical application can help ease inflammation and aid wound healing, thanks to the antimicrobial properties.

DIY Epsom Salt Body Scrub

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup coconut oil
 • 1/2 cup Epsom salt
 • 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

 • In a medium bowl, mix together coconut oil, Epsom salt, and the essential oils. Make sure the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
 • Spoon the scrub into a glass jar and screw on the lid. Decorate with some ribbon or label. Increase the size of the batch in order to give this scrub as a gift during the holidays.

Stress can come from any event or thought that makes you feel angry, nervous, or frustrated. It’s the body’s reaction to a problem, challenge, or demand. In short bursts, stress can be positive, helping you avoid danger or meet a deadline. When you have chronic stress, though, it can do more harm than you realize.

How Does Stress Impact Your Joints?

Even though the body is made up of different organs and systems, it can be viewed as one complete system, given that all of those systems work together. That means that stress could end up having an influence on joint pain. Researchers note that elevated cortisol levels have been associated with more pain. Chronically high stress levels also deplete your adrenal glands, raising prolactin levels and increasing the body’s sensitivity to pain.

Some health experts note that stress is the opposite of helpful for the immune system. The fact is that stress is an immune-modulator, and the immune system is responsible for a healthy inflammatory response. Inflammation is usually what you feel when your joints start to ache or hurt. Additionally, inflammation negatively affects gut health, and poor gut health increases joint pain and inflammation. To quickly summarize, stress can lead to poor gut health, inflammation, chronically high cortisol levels, and more, all of which impact joint pain.

What Can You Do About It?

If you have been feeling some aches and pains in your joints, your stress could be to blame. The good news is that there are many helpful things that can give your joints a break. Before you begin to alleviate pain, identify the triggers by writing in a journal. Look for patterns and you’ll find your triggers. Once you find them then you can craft an appropriate plan of action. Other common stress-relieving tactics that may help joint pain are detailed below.

Try Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 3,000 years. It uses very fine needles, which are inserted in various points in the body to open blockages. Acupuncture aims to restore the flow of energy, qi, within the body. It is also a healing practice that stimulates the brain to release serotonin and endorphins, which may help relieve stress and promote an overall sense of wellbeing. Acupuncture may also help improve circulation, which may in turn benefit your joints

Take A Relaxing Bath

Soak in a warm bath for 20 minutes and allow your stress to fade away. Not only does the warmth soothe the mind, but it also supports joint and muscle recovery. Research shows that a warm bath can help reduce swelling and inflammation, in addition to increasing circulation. If you add Epsom salt, which is known to decrease inflammation and swelling, then you will enhance your bath experience. Enhance your tranquil experience by lighting some candles or adding lavender essential oil to the water.

Get A Massage

Not only can a massage soothe sore muscles and joints, but it also works to relieve anxiety and promote better sleep. According to researchers, getting regular massages can improve levels of pain, reduce stiffness, and improve range of motion and overall joint function. Studies have also shown that applying moderate pressure during massage can lower the body’s production of cortisol and boost serotonin production.

Meditate

Sit down in a comfortable position on the floor, or lie flat on your back, whichever is more comfortable. You can listen to guided meditation, soothing music, or simply enjoy the silence. Try your best to focus on your breath and let your thoughts come and go like waves up the beach. Perhaps you find it easier to repeat an inspirational mantra to help you stay in the present moment.

Anything else you can do to help reduce stress is beneficial for your joints. Maybe you clear up your schedule to have more time to decompress or journal about your worries. The little things help and can help you feel more at ease. In truth, nobody wants to feel overwhelmed by stress. The body becomes acutely aware of excess stress and you may experience joint pain as a result. Learn to understand your body’s cues and you will be that much healthier!

]]>

During the summer, you likely spend more time outdoors. Perhaps you spend a day at the beach, lake, or pool, or maybe you go on a long hike. By spending so much time outside, you increase your exposure to sunlight, insects, and other things that can cause itchy or painful rashes. Sometimes, the cause of the rash may be a mystery, but this article intends to explain the unexpected causes of summer rashes

You can easily prevent sunburn by taking the proper precautions. How do you prevent rashes, though? From swimmer’s itch and hot tub rash to polymorphous light eruption, we give you the low-down on common yet surprising causes of rashes during summer.

Swimmer’s Itch

Swimmer’s itch differs from seabather’s eruption (covered later) because it occurs in areas not covered by swimwear. Microscopic parasites from infected snails that live in the shallow waters of lakes, streams, or the ocean can burrow in the skin. That causes an allergic reaction that looks like tiny red bumps or large welts. The parasites ultimately die in the skin because we are dead-end hosts, but the problem is that these bumps cause intense itching. Relieve the itch by taking an Epsom salt bath or a bath with ground oatmeal. You can also apply baking soda paste to the affected area to soothe the skin.

Heat Rash

Heat rash, or miliaria or prickly heat, occurs when sweat blocks the pores in your skin and starts to build up under the skin. This is a common problem in babies, but it can occur at any age, especially in hot and humid weather. Heat rash usually stings and itches, and you can identify it by small red bumps or clear blisters that break easily. You will see a rash in areas where you sweat more, for example, the armpits, elbows, and groin. Heat rash typically clears on its own, but you can ease itchiness by wearing loose-fitting clothing and cooling off the skin.

Margarita Dermatitis

Unfortunately, drinking this classic alcoholic beverage that is either frozen or on the rocks will not cause a skin condition. That said, a dribble of citrus juice on the skin, which has been exposed to the sun, can lead to a nasty burn. This burn is known as margarita dermatitis, or phytophotodermatitis. This happens when a photosensitizing compound (furocoumarin) in limes and other citrus fruits, parsley, dill, and celery becomes activated by UVA light. That reaction causes a burning rash that develops within hours.

It’s possible to develop blisters or red, itchy patches on the skin. Symptoms will be at their worst within two to three days. While the blisters heal, the skin may become darker, which can take months to go away. Just be careful when you handle citrus immediately after being in the sun.

Polymorphous Light Eruption

If you have a sensitivity to sunlight and expose your skin to UV rays in late spring and early summer, you may break out in itchy, hive-like bumps. This phenomenon is known as polymorphous light eruption (PLE). According to research, PLE affects 10% of the general population. Those affected most likely live in northern versus southern climates. Researchers note that PLE occurs about 75% of the time in females between ages 20 and 40. People with fairer skin are also more susceptible.

PLE is a hypersensitive reaction to the sun that will typically go away within 10 days. It usually only occurs once each season, when the weather warms up and the skin gets exposed to UV light. It tends to get better over the course of summer, but be careful on beach days or sunny vacations. If you want to relieve the itch, ask your healthcare professional about an anti-itch or antihistamine cream. Severe cases may call for a topical corticosteroid.

Seabather’s Eruption

If you notice a rash under your swimsuit after a dip in the ocean, you may have seabather’s eruption, or pica-pica (Spanish for “itchy itchy”) or sea lice. This usually occurs when tiny thimble jellyfish and sea anemones get trapped under your swimsuit. They release stinging cells that inject a toxin, which causes an allergic reaction in the skin. You may notice a prickly sensation while swimming, but you’ll notice a reaction within four to 24 hours. It will look like a patch of insect bites or hives under your swimsuit. Make sure to remove your swimsuit and shower immediately after a swim in the ocean. Rinse your suit thoroughly in hot water to remove any remaining organisms, and consider an antihistamine if you notice something.

Hot Tub Rash

About one to two days after you soak in water contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is found in the ground and water, you can develop a skin rash: hot tub folliculitis. This skin rash gets its name because it is more common in hot tubs. The reason for that is because hot water breaks down the chlorine that kills bacteria. The rash can also occur after swimming in a contaminated lake or pool. A hot tub rash is characterized by tiny millimeter-sized red bumps that are worse in areas that were covered by the swimsuit. You may notice itchy or tender pimples around hair follicles. The rash usually gets better on its own, but a doctor visit may be necessary if it doesn’t go away within a few days.

The post 5 Spiritual Bath Teas To Cleanse Your Energy appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

If there is anything better than a soothing, warm bath, it is an upgraded bath infused with intention and a ritualistic touch. We are, of course, referring to spiritual baths, and this article details how to draw one for yourself and how they benefit you. Plus, we provide five recipes to get you started on the right foot.

What Is A Spiritual Bath?

A spiritual bath, or ritual bath as some people call it, is the idea of coupling a hot bath with intention. By submerging the body into the water and your intent, you can get more out of your relaxing experience. This practice dates back to the days of Ancient Egypt, Greece, Israel, and India. Even modern-day baptisms use this practice that has taken place throughout human history.

The great thing about spiritual baths is that you can do them on your own. It doesn’t have to be a large demonstration; on the contrary, it can be a beautiful, solitary experience. In addition to the ingredients you add to the water, you can incorporate soul-nourishing or spiritual tools that you enjoy. Do your best to avoid any chemical products, including shampoo, conditioner, shower gels, or bubbly soaps. Instead, opt for Epsom salt, essential oils, herbs, and other natural ingredients. A saltwater soak is also a powerful way to cleanse the body’s energy.

The Purpose Of Spiritual Baths

A spiritual bath is a bath that refreshes the body and soul. It is easy to look at it like this: you feel one way before a bath and another way once you step out of it. That “cleansed” feeling goes beyond the feeling of a clean body. You often feel renewed and relaxed after a bath, so incorporating intention and a spiritual element can enhance the total experience.

What is the “purpose” of a spiritual bath, then? If anything, your intention determines the bath’s purpose. Generally speaking, the purpose is to allow yourself the time and space to be mindful and present in your body. During your bath, you can allow the internal and energetic healing that comes from that space to work with you. Cleansing is healing and inspiring, which is potentially why spiritual baths can have a grounding effect.

How To Create A Spiritual Bath

Anybody can add ingredients to a bath and soak in it for a given amount of time. To create the perfect spiritual bath, we suggest you use the following instructions:

 • Declutter your space and clean the bathtub before you draw the bath. The energy of the tub should be pure and fresh.
 • Fill the tub with water at your desired temperature. You can bring candles into the bathroom and light them around the tub.
 • Add two handfuls of bath salts, either Epsom or Himalayan. You can also use homemade bath salt infusions.
 • If you want essential oils, drop a few drops into the bath, but make sure you don’t add them freely. Too many drops can irritate the skin.
 • While you soak in the bath, aim to gather your thoughts and think positively. You can recite a mantra or intention, or repeat positive affirmations in a meditative state. A gratitude practice is also excellent during a spiritual bath.

5 Spiritual Bath Teas

Spiritual bath teas involve ingredients that complete your intentions and affirmations. Each combination gives a different spiritual cleanse, making each bath unique. Here are some combinations to enhance your baths.

Beauty Cleanse

Ground oats work to soothe skin, providing relief from irritation and inflammation. Their saponins can also absorb dirt and oil, which helps clean your pores. Add one or two cups of ground oats to your bath with optional orange essential oil. Massage the oats into your skin to rid yourself of dirt and negative energy. During this bath, use the affirmation, “I am beautiful in mind, body, and spirit.”

Abundance Bath

Smudge your tub with white sage and add some bay leaves, chamomile, and about one cup of Himalayan salt to the tub. Bring your citrine and place it on your tub, visualizing the things you want to attract more of into your life. During this bath, consider the affirmation, “I am a magnet for everything I desire.”

The Full Moon Bath

Wind down for the evening and make this bath the focal point of your night. Grab a pen and paper and write out a list of things you want to let go of, from beliefs to build-up stress. Take that list, rip it up, and throw it in the trash. Pour in a few drops of lavender essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil and about a cup or so of Epsom salt. Place your favorite crystals around the tub to purify the energy. You don’t need an affirmation for this bath because the goal of it should be to release everything and begin anew.

New Moon Cleanse

Grab your Epsom salt, lavender essential oil, and maqui berry powder for this cleansing bath. Stir the ingredients and your bathwater will turn a dark blue hue. Place your amethyst and clear quartz crystals around the tub, along with a few of your favorite candles. Enter the bath setting new intentions for the coming week. Repeat the affirmation, “I have the power to create my reality.”

Lavender Love Cleanse

This bath helps you harness self-love and energy to reinvigorate yourself. Use rose petals, lavender essential oil, and about one cup of Epsom salt for this bath. Bring rose quartz crystals and place them around the tub. During this bath, you can use the affirmation, “I love myself unconditionally.”

There are face sprays, toners, oils, tinctures, lotions, masks, butters, and so much more to improve the health of your skin. Sea salt and magnesium are two ingredients receiving a lot of attention in the beauty world. Although this is relatively new, sea salt and water have a long history of use in various skin and beauty therapies. It even has its own name: thalassotherapy, the therapeutic use of salt water. People with various skin types may benefit from using salt water.

Skin Benefits Of Salt Water

Historically, people who use salt on their skin notice fewer breakouts, clearer complexion, and improved skin texture. Salt scrubs, Epsom salt baths, or salt baths are excellent methods to add to your skin care routine. Using a sea salt scrub on your skin can be a little rough for people with sensitive skin, though. Fortunately, the use of a gentle sea salt spray stays on the skin and helps to nourish it throughout the day.

Why is salt water so great for the skin? Well, it is naturally antimicrobial and can help get rid of acne-causing bacteria. Sea salt is also rich in naturally occurring trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, but Epsom salt, which is in this spray recipe, contains other beneficial minerals. In general, though, salt can help boost collagen production and aid with the removal of blackheads.

Salt Water For Different Skin Types

Unlike other ingredients, salt is not the perfect fit for everyone’s skin type. If you have dryness or certain skin conditions, you may find it irritating. That said, many people with eczema and psoriasis benefit from the healing minerals in Epsom salt. If you are unsure whether or not salt negatively affects your skin, try a patch test before rubbing it all over your face and body.

Now, some dermatologists discourage people from washing their face with salt water. Various cultures have used this practice for thousands of years, though. In fact, studies found that salt water benefits musculoskeletal issues like arthritis and skin problems like psoriasis. A 2005 clinical trial examined the benefits of bathing in the Dead Sea as a remedy for psoriasis. The authors behind the study reported a 76% improvement in psoriasis symptoms. A similar study from 2007 saw a 95% improvement in symptoms.

Other studies examined the effects of salt water on eczema. The studies noted that patients experienced less inflammation and skin cracking. Other people note that salt water is highly beneficial for reducing dandruff. Another study examined the use of salt water baths for EB, a rare and painful skin disorder that causes blisters. EB patients reported having 91% less pain and saw improvements in skin discharge and odor. Salt water may not have the ability to cure diseases, but it may be powerful enough to improve your skin.

How To Use Salt Water For Skin

You don’t want to use too much salt water, especially if you have dry skin. Try to follow up the salt spray in this article with a moisturizer for extra hydration. Some sources recommend that you start with a salt water cleanser or toner a few times a week before using the following spray. Whatever you do, don’t forget to add Epsom salt or magnesium flakes to the salt spray. Either of these ingredients will complement the benefits of sea salt.

DIY Sea Salt Spray

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup distilled water
 • 1 tablespoon sea salt
 • 1/4 teaspoon Epsom salt (or magnesium flakes)
 • 2 drops essential oil of choice (optional)

Instructions:

 • Pour the water, sea salt, and Epsom salt (or magnesium flakes) into a small saucepan over medium heat. You don’t want the water to boil; rather, you just want to heat and stir until everything is completely dissolved.
 • Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool. Stir in the essential oil, if using.
 • Pour into a glass spray bottle and store in a cool, dry place.
 • Shake well before each use. Spray on a cotton pad and use it as a toner, or you can lightly mist your skin with this spray.

Have you stopped purchasing scented plug-ins, candles, and air fresheners yet? If you haven’t done so yet, then it’s time to leave them behind. Almost all of those products contain toxic chemicals, some of which are known endocrine system disruptors. The average person isn’t aware of those chemicals because manufacturers don’t have to disclose the ingredients in signature fragrances. If you see “fragrance” on the ingredient list, please understand that there are many harmful chemicals that go into making those blends.

In case you didn’t know, some artificial fragrances disperse particles of phthalates and formaldehyde into the air. Phthalates are small particles of plastic that bind fragrance molecules together. You can easily breathe them in, whereby they get into your nose and lungs. In addition to those chemicals, the term “artificial fragrance” accounts for more than 3,000 chemicals. The reason that companies don’t have to disclose them is because they are signature, copyrighted blends. So there is no real way of knowing what is in an air freshener, unless you make your own.

This article provides you with recipes for 10 holiday-themed air freshener sprays. You will need a good collection of essential oils in order to make them. When you purchase these essential oils, make sure to purchase 100% pure essential oils from reputable companies with good reviews. Many of the essential oils in these air freshener sprays contain properties that may help combat toxins in the air, helping to purify the space. Now, let’s get started on those recipes!

The Supplies

You will need various essential oils, dark glass spray bottles (preferably brown amber glass bottles), water, some sea salt or Epsom salt, and distilled water. In order to use these air fresheners, simply spray them into the air. If your essential oils are clear and not colored, you can spray them on linens or upholstery.

When you think of lavender, the image of purple flowers swaying in a gentle breeze comes to mind. The scent is calming and woodsy, and you commonly find lavender in essential oil form. While many manufacturers and beauty companies utilize the flowers, the leaves of the plant are very useful. The leaves have not been studied as extensively as the flowers, which is why they are not widely used.

What Is Lavender?

This flowering plant belongs to the mint family and you can easily identify it based on the aromatic purple blossoms. Researchers believe that it is native to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, dating as far back as 2,500 years. Ancient civilizations used lavender to freshen up and almost as a perfume, lightly scenting personal items like clothes and hair. Today, scientists understand that lavender exhibits many therapeutic and medicinal health benefits. Many people use the essential oil to help promote restful sleep, while others incorporate it into beauty products. Learn how you can start using lavender leaves in your DIY applications below.

Bath Soak

Who doesn’t love a relaxing bath? To make a bath soak using lavender leaves, you’ll need a handful of lavender leaves and a fresh green herb of your choice. Thyme, mint, violet needles, or sage are excellent options. Add the lavender leaves and the herb of your choice, ensuring you use the same amounts of each, to a food processor and blend until smooth. Add in about one cup of Epsom salt and blend thoroughly. Spread the blended mixture onto wax paper and allow it to dry. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and a touch of baking soda, which will help soften the water during your soak. Store in a glass jar and use when ready.

Infused Vinegar

In order to make lavender-infused vinegar, which can be a great DIY cleaner or hair rinse. You need to fill a jar about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way with fresh lavender leaves, but you can also use dry lavender leaves. If making a cleaner, pour distilled white vinegar into the jar until full, stir gently, screw on the lid, and allow it to infuse for three to four weeks. Then you can strain the liquid and use it to clean. If making a hair rinse, pour apple cider vinegar into the jar until full, stir gently, screw on the lid, and allow it to infuse for three to four weeks. Strain after the infusion process and use the hair rinse after shampooing. Make sure to dilute up to 1/2 of the rinse with water.

Infused Oil

One of the easiest things to do with lavender leaves is to make lavender-infused oil. Similar to the infused vinegar, fill a canning jar about 1/3 to 3/4 of the way with dried lavender leaves. Fill the jar with your favorite carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil, olive oil, rice bran oil, or sunflower oil. Stir a few Tims to release the bubbles and then place the jar in a small saucepan filled with a few inches of water. Place the saucepan over low heat for a few hours. Make sure that the water doesn’t evaporate out. Remove from the heat and strain the oil. Store the oil in a glass jar and use as you please.

Cooking

If you want to add a pleasant aroma to your dishes, you can season them with a small amount of finely diced lavender leaves. Make sure not to overuse them in food because they can ruin a dish, as they are quite powerful. You may experience a soapy taste if you use too many lavender leaves in your food. Always start with a small amount and add more according to taste.

Anti-Itch Bug Bite Sticks

Filled with lavender, anti-itch bug bite sticks are great for relieving the itchiness and inflammation from bug bites. If you venture into the outdoors, take these with you. You can even lather some on your skin prior to walking in nature to help ward off peak insects. You’ll need a handful of ingredients, which you can find by clicking here

Making Tea

Making tea with lavender is a great way to promote more restful sleep. Similar to chamomile, lavender has a calming effect on the mind, helping to quiet it before bed. Whether you exercise frequently or spend your days hunched over at a computer, you’re bound to experience muscle soreness. The shoulders tend to be the first places where people experience tension. If you fail to address the stiffness, it’s very common to experience headaches, neck pain, and potentially migraines. Massages can be greatly beneficial, but it can be difficult to massage shoulders by yourself. You can, however, soak in a bath with ingredients that aim to relieve muscle pain.

Some people don’t want to take the natural route, opting for over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. If you don’t want to use medications to get rid of muscle pain, then you clicked on the right article. The sore muscle soak recipe contains lavender leaves, lavender essential oil, and Epsom salt. Together, these ingredients work to relax your muscles and decrease inflammation. Let’s explore those ingredients and how they benefit your body below.

Lavender Essential Oil

Within the past several years, there has been a growing interest in the use of essential oils to benefit overall health. These oils exhibit therapeutic properties, some of which include reducing inflammation, increasing circulation, and accelerating wound healing. In the case of lavender essential oil, it offers both anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making it effective for reducing general pain and tension. According to researchers, lavender essential oil works to reduce swelling and may provide better blood flow to muscles. That makes it beneficial for relieving muscle spasms, especially if they result from stress or anxiety.

Speaking of stress and anxiety, researchers have studied lavender essential oil for its ability to suppress anxiety. Researchers attribute the stress-relieving properties to lavender’s scent, which may also promote sounder sleep. Additionally, lavender essential oil may work to relieve menstrual pain, especially when combined with gentle massage.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is made up of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. It originated in the town of Epsom in Surrey, England, where it is found in natural springs. When it enters the water, Epsom salt breaks down into magnesium and sulfate. The theory is that the body absorbs these minerals when you soak in an Epsom salt bath. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of scientific evidence that supports these claims, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that these baths help relieve muscle pain.

Epsom salt may help to relieve general muscle pain, especially in the shoulders, back, neck, and skull. When you are able to relax the muscles that surround the head and neck, you have an easier time getting over a headache. By absorbing the minerals in Epsom salt, the overall health of your skin may also improve. In fact, many people with skin conditions like eczema benefit from soaking in Epsom salt baths. Like lavender essential oil, Epsom salt may also promote better sleep by reducing stress levels and promoting relaxation. Finally, the magnesium in Epsom salt works to increase serotonin levels, which may help relieve stress and anxiety. Plus, you’ll be in a better mood!

DIY Sore Muscle Soak

Have you seen those stock photos where people hug pumpkins like their own children? Well, that’s the epitome of a pumpkin lover, and it expresses how many people feel about autumn. As summer transitions to fall, the weather changes and pumpkin spice drinks, desserts, and more arrive to many restaurant menus. Besides the baked goods and sugary beverages, there are pumpkin candles, lotions, and now these DIY pumpkin spice bath bombs.

On a chilly fall evening, there’s no better way to relax than by soaking in a soothing bath. Inhaling the festive scent and looking at the color of these bath bombs is enough to put you in a state of relaxation. The only thing to keep in mind is that the bath bomb may potentially turn the tub orange, especially if it is white. A little cleaning and elbow grease will wash the orange away, but just keep this in mind when you use these bath bombs.

Note: If you do not want to deal with an orange tub, you can omit the orange gel dye. The bath bombs will then be whiteish and you can easily clean the tub after use.

Epsom Salt

The two main components of Epsom salt are magnesium and sulfate. Researchers believe that this combination works to stimulate the body’s natural detoxification pathways. Soaking in a bath with Epsom salt can help exfoliate dead skin cells and contribute to softer skin. People with eczema or psoriasis tend to find that Epsom salt baths can help relieve symptoms. Should you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, it may be beneficial to consult with your doctor before you add Epsom salt to your bath.

Baking Soda

Almost every person has baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, in their home. Baking soda fully dissolves in water and works to remove bacteria, odors, and acidity. For these reasons, it may be helpful for people with certain skin conditions. Adding baking soda to a bath can help naturally relax muscles and reduce stress levels. The warm water may also promote sweating, which helps release toxins and allows the baking soda to cleanse pores. It’s possible that people with eczema may benefit from adding baking soda to bathwater during a flare up.

Pumpkin Pie Spice

Pumpkin spice lattes may not be healthy for you, but pumpkin pie spice is. Comprised of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice, pumpkin pie spice offers beneficial antioxidants and nutrients for the skin. Allspice, for example, contains compounds that may prevent bacterial infections. Some studies found that it exhibits anti-fungal and antiseptic properties. Cinnamon also exhibits anti-fungal, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties that may fight acne and blemishes. Finally, cinnamon is an excellent pore cleanser and it may also encourage healthy blood flow to the skin.

DIY Pumpkin Spice Bath Bombs

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup baking soda
 • 1/2 cup citric acid
 • 1/3 cup corn starch
 • 1/4 cup Epsom salt
 • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
 • 1 tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
 • 20 drops pumpkin pie essential oil
 • Orange gel dye

Instructions:

 • Add the baking soda, citric acid, corn starch, Epsom salt, and pumpkin pie spice to a large bowl and mix well to combine.
 • Add in the coconut oil and essential oil to the bowl and mix well.
 • Whisk in about 8-10 drops of the gel food coloring and add more until the mixture clumps a little when you grab it. You can omit this step if you don’t want the orange color.
 • Pack the mixture into two bath bomb molds, or silicone sphere ice trays. The size of the mold will determine how many bath bombs you end up with.
 • Once the bath bombs are firm and dry, carefully remove them from the molds and place them in an airtight container. Use when ready.

Foot fungus is an embarrassing topic of conversation. Failure to address superficial infections that affect the outer layers of the skin can worsen and lead to more serious conditions. A fungal infection of the foot is commonly athlete’s foot or foot ringworm. The skin can develop fungal infections, but so can the toenails, and that is known as onychomycosis.

Depending on the severity of the infection, medications or antibiotics may or may not be necessary. More often than not, athlete’s foot can be remedied by way of regularly applying an anti-fungal steroid cream. Creams like this can be harmful to the rest of the body, though, as the skin absorbs the other chemicals and ingredients in them. What about harnessing the power of natural ingredients to remedy the issue? The following ingredients, which are in the foot soak recipe in this article, offer powerful anti-fungal properties.

Baking Soda

Not only is baking soda is an excellent ingredient to help neutralize foot odors, but it also helps to battle fungal infections. It dries excess moisture between toes, and fungus thrives in moist environments. Baking soda helps to exfoliate the skin’s surface, which destroys the fungal layer underneath. Additionally, the natural alkaline nature of baking soda helps to neutralize the acidic environment of a fungal infection.

Tea Tree Oil

Some scientific studies confirmed that tea tree oil is capable of destroying nail fungus. A 2013 study found that tea tree oil inhibited the growth of Trichophyton rubrum, a fungus that causes nail infections. This same fungus often causes athlete’s foot. The antiseptic and anti-fungal properties in tea tree oil help to reduce the risk of recurring fungal infections. If you regularly experience athlete’s foot or nail infections, regular application may be necessary.

Epsom Salt

People typically soak in Epsom salt baths to help reduce muscle aches and pains. The belief is that the body efficiently absorbs the magnesium, which may treat a variety of problems. According to several studies, Epsom salt does not kill the fungus that causes athlete’s foot, but it does help draw out excess moisture like baking soda. The crystals in Epsom salt also aid with the removal of dead skin cells, leaving the feet more supple and nourished post soak.

Peppermint Essential Oil

A recent laboratory study found that several essential oils, including peppermint essential oil, were effective against 22 bacterial strains. Out of 12 fungi, peppermint essential oil completely inhibited 11 of them. This is because peppermint essential oil exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antiseptic activity. Additionally, experts believe that the menthol in peppermint essential oil helps soothe inflamed skin.

DIY Anti-Fungal Foot Soak

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup Epsom salt
 • 1/2 cup baking soda
 • 30 drops tea tree oil
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 2 tbsp sweet almond oil
 • Green tea leaves (as much as you like)

Instructions:

 • Pour the Epsom salt and baking soda into a medium-sized bowl and mix well.
 • In a small bowl, combine the essential oils with the carrier oil. Mix well for about 30 seconds to fully incorporate the essential oils into the almond oil.
 • Pour the oil mixture over the Epsom salt mixture and stir to combine.
 • Add as many green tea leaves as you like to the bowl and gently fold them in. To do this, you can simply open up green tea bags and dump the contents in the bowl.
 • When everything is fully mixed, pour the entire mixture into a glass jar and screw on the lid to keep fresh.
 • When ready to use, pour about 1/2 cup in a foot soaker with lukewarm water and stir until dissolved. Let your feet soak in it for 20 minutes. Repeat once per week if you experience recurring fungal infections.
