Epilepsy is a neurological brain disorder that affects the nerve cells and their activity in the brain. The nerve cells in the brain are disrupted by abnormal electrical activities, causing seizures and other unusual behavior. Seizures can be generalized (affecting all areas of the brain) and they can also be partial or focal (affecting a certain part of the brain’s activity).

Some seizures are less intense and people experience a brief moment of unawareness, being conscious yet puzzled at the same time. Seizures play a major role in the condition of epilepsy, but they are two different things. Some people can experience seizures once, while others experience them repeatedly.

What Causes Epilepsy?

There’s no real detectible cause for epilepsy, but the condition has been linked to several factors. Epilepsy is often confused with being an autoimmune disorder, however, it is not considered to be one. In some cases autoimmune disorders can contribute to epileptic conditions. Most of the causes of epilepsy have been linked to certain physical activities, genetics, or developmental issues.

Epilepsy Awareness Day, also known as Purple Day, intends to raise awareness about this condition, which affects roughly 50 million people around the world. Last year, people wore purple in various countries on all of the continents, even Antarctica. In honor of this day, here are some natural remedies that may help those with epilepsy.

Natural Remedies

Get Your Vitamins

Certain vitamins have been proven to help decrease the amount of seizures people with epilepsy experience. Consuming foods that are high in folate, vitamin B6, vitamin D, and vitamin E may help control the seizures.

Eat Your Zinc

Zinc deficiencies have also been linked to epilepsy. The deficiency hasn’t had much support behind it, but incorporating more zinc may help, depending on the person. Natural sources of zinc include pumpkin seeds, cashews, spinach, sunflower seeds, shiitake mushrooms, Napa cabbage, and dried apricots.

Don’t Forget Magnesium

Magnesium deficiencies have also been linked to being a probable cause of epilepsy, but more research needs to be conducted to support this. Increasing the amount of magnesium can help with the recovery process. You can increase magnesium levels by consuming dark leafy greens like kale, spinach and Swiss chard, sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, avocado, bananas, cashews, almonds, and more.

Eliminate Processed Foods

Processed foods, sugar, and caffeine can contribute to seizures. It’s best to eliminate foods that aren’t natural and add to the cause. Keeping a diet that provides your body with the essential nutrients is best. Raw food or vegan-based diets are best.

Try Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been linked to helping those who have epilepsy. It can help change the brain’s activities, ultimately helping to reduce the amount of seizures one experiences.

Put Yourself In Control

Most people can detect symptoms that are associated with them having a seizure personally. Mentally taking control can help lessen how severe seizures are or calm the body into preventing them from occurring. Things like meditation, relaxation time, walking, breathing methods, smelling a strong odor, or even just telling your body “no” can help. This natural remedy is also known as Biofeedback.

The Prophet Muhammad reportedly said that the seeds of the black cumin plant (commonly known as black seed) could “cure everything but death.” Cure is a strong word, but he may have been onto something. Nearly every day some new study comes out touting the benefits of black cumin seeds. Originally from Egypt, black cumin grows in a tiny pod that requires soaking before the tiny seeds can be released. Upon consumption, the body benefits from a powerful substance called crystalline nigellone as well as over a hundred other compounds.

Take a look at this amazing list to read more about the benefits of Black Seed.

  1. Asthma
Research suggests that taking black seed extract by mouth improves coughing, wheezing and lung function in people with asthma.
  2. Infection
Researchers at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College found that Black Seed oil inhibited the growth of 67% of the antibacterial-resistant “super bugs” they tested. This is an important finding as scientists scramble to find new ways to kill off infections that are becoming increasingly resistant to standard anti-bacterial regiments.
  3. Cancer
Croatian scientists determined that two phytochemicals found in Black Seed reduced tumors in mice by 52%. But this is only the beginning: studies by researchers all over the world have found Black Seed to have a powerful effect on all sorts of cancers from liver to lung, brain to breast, leukemia to colon.
  4. Liver Health
In a recent study, scientists discovered that black seed oil benefits the function of the liver and helps prevent both damage and disease.
  5. Diabetes
Researchers from the Indian Council of Medical Research found that black seed oil helped those suffering from diabetes in a number of ways. The compound caused partial regeneration of pancreatic cells, increased lowered serum insulin concentrations, and decreased elevated glucose. They went on to say that it worked as well as metformin, a popular diabetes drug, without any of the side effects.
  6. Weight Loss
The Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders determined that that black seed oil was amongst “the most effective natural remedies on the planet” for those trying to lose weight. Black Seed addresses several weight gain triggers such as appetite, glucose absorption, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides.
  7. Hair
Probably one of the most unique black seed oil benefits is its uncanny ability to help restore hair loss. No one quite understands why it happens, but it’s not too hard to guess that it has something to do with its powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
  8. Skin
Iranian researchers found that it was as effective as the skin cream Betamethasone in decreasing severity of hand eczema.
  9. High Blood Pressure
Early research suggests that taking black seed extract twice daily for 8 weeks might slightly improve blood pressure in some people.
  10. Opiate Withdrawal
Research has suggested that black seed oil taken by mouth three times a day may decrease symptoms associated with heroin withdrawal.
  11. Bonus: Epilepsy
We’ve included it here, because the study was very small. But in any case, researchers found that Black Seed extract significantly reduced seizure activity in children suffering from Epilepsy.

Conclusion

Clearly, Black Seed is a powerful natural remedy for all sorts of ailments and diseases. For those of us who are lucky enough to be healthy already, a daily regiment of Black Seed may help keep you that way.

Causes and Risk Factors

Epilepsy or seizures are caused by a surge in electrical signals or energy in the brain. This can be triggered by:

  • Head trauma
  • Genetic influences
  • Medical disorders
  • Certain diseases such as meningitis, AIDS and viral encephalitis
  • Pre-natal injury
  • Developmental disorders such as Down syndrome and autism

Risk factors include:

  • Age-while epilepsy can happen at any age, it’s typically seen in younger years or at ages 65 or older
  • Gender-men are more likely to experience seizures than women
  • Head injuries
  • Hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy, menopause or taking hormone-based medication such as thyroid meds, birth control or growth hormones
  • Stroke or vascular disease
  • Brain infections
  • High childhood fevers

Symptoms

When consciousness is lost during a seizure, it is called “Grand mal seizure.” When consciousness is not lost during a seizure, it is called “Petit mal seizure.

Seizures can display as:

  • Temporary confusion
  • Staring blankly
  • Convulsion
  • Jerking movementsLoss of awareness
  • Loss of consciousness

Healing Options

Herbs great for healing epilepsy include all herbs that increase and enhance oxygen flow throughout the body, e.g., Gotu Kola, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, Holy/Blessed Thistle, Black Walnut Hulls, and Green Tea. Additional herbs great for healing epilepsy include Jasmine Flower, Lady’s Slipper, Irish Moss, Cayenne, Ginger, Fo Ti, Jatamansi, Scullcap, European Mistletoe, Oatstraw, and Maca Maca.

One of the best remedies for epilepsy involves the use of crystals. When you compress two pieces of crystal (especially Clear Quartz crystal) together, the friction creates a form of electricity called piezoelectricity that causes the release of negative ions throughout the entire body that travel down to the feet and up to the crown of the head electrically fine-tuning the entire body, increasing oxygen flow, and stimulating cellular regeneration.

Crystals that aid in the prevention and healing of seizures include Lepidolite, Sugilite, Jet, Selenite, Kunzite, Malachite, and Emerald. Because epilepsy affects the nervous system located in the brain, epilepsy is a Seventh or Crown chakra deficiency and therefore, for purposes of healing epilepsy, crystals that are the same color of the Seventh chakra (violet and/or white) are best for this purpose.

Essential oils that aid in prevention and healing of seizures include Marjoram and Lavender. It is best that these oils be inhaled or burned in a diffuser.

Bach flower essences that aid in prevention and healing of seizures include Heather, Impatiens, and Water Violet.

Avoid stress, since this can create a change in body chemistry that could lead to a seizure.

Get plenty of sleep.

Do not drink alcohol, take drugs or smoke.

Dietary Intervention

Meat and dairy foods are bound to clog the arteries and obstruct oxygen and blood flow and thus a switch to a vegan and/or raw foods diet would be appropriate and beneficial in healing from epilepsy. Natural foods (fruits and vegetables) will automatically bring more oxygen into the body and unlike meat and dairy products will not clog the arteries due to arterial plaque and mucus buildup.

Water, fruit and/or vegetable juice, and herbal teas should be the drink of choice for purposes of healing from epilepsy.

A ketogenic diet may be beneficial. This type of diet forces the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrates. It is based in high-fat, adequate protein and low carbohydrate foods.
