Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have upgraded their hand soap game. There are so many soaps on the markets, and the truth is that many of them are filled with harmful chemicals that are difficult to pronounce. Are there non-toxic hand soaps in stores? Some brands use reputable ingredients, but they may also use fragrances or other substances that can disrupt the skin barrier.

Unlike making body butters, lip balms, or bath bombs, making your own non-toxic soap is a very simple process. When you go to purchase ingredients for the soap, you will also need to acquire a soap dispenser. You can either purchase a foaming soap dispenser, or any old hand soap dispenser. If your old hand soap is running out, give it a good rinse, let it dry, and use that for this DIY hand soap

Castile Soap

Is castile strong enough to kill germs? The short answer is: no, but it is still effective. Rather than killing bacteria, castile soap, which is a surfactant, removes germs and bacteria (like dirt and grease) with the aid of running water. That makes castile soap an excellent ingredient for cleaning your hands. Liquid castile soap, such as Dr. Bronner’s, is free of synthetic ingredients or foaming agents. It is a blend of ethically sourced carrier oils and aromatic essential oils.

Dermatologists like to say that castile soap speaks the language of the skin. That means that it incorporates three essential moisturizing components: humectants, emollients, and occlusives, all of which benefit the skin.

Humectants

Humectants are substances that attract water from the air or from deeper layers of the skin. Coming in naturally derived, unchanged, or synthetic forms, humectants bind with water and break down dead skin cells. They typically break down those skin cells first, making it so your pores remain unclogged. Once humectants loosen dead skin cells, they draw moisture from the air or deeper layers of the skin.

Emollients

Emollients are ingredients in skin care products that help to relieve dryness or skin irritation. Skin care experts refer to emollients as skin barrier creams because they help form a protective film on the skin’s outer. Dermatologists usually recommend emollients for skin conditions that cause dryness, for example, eczema and psoriasis. Emollients attract moisture to the skin, help prevent moisture loss in the skin, and work to soften peeling or scaling skin. An emollient differs from a moisturizer because it works to soften the skin, whereas a moisturizer contains other ingredients that bring water into the skin.

Occlusives

Occlusives are moisturizing agents that help form a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. Typically, they are waxy or oily and almost act like plastic wrap for the skin. What we mean by this is that plastic wrap forms a barrier between food and the outside environment. Similarly, occlusives aim to prevent harmful pathogens or particles from entering the skin, while keeping the skin moist at the same time. They help protect against dehydration, infection, and environmental damage, making them a great addition to any skin care regimen.

DIY Non-Toxic Hand Soap

Ingredients:

 • 3/4 cup filtered water
 • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
 • 20 drops lemon essential oil
 • Soap dispenser

Instructions:

 • Pour the water into the soap dispenser, followed by the liquid castile soap.
 • Add 20 drops of lemon essential oil, which works to remove odors and provides a refreshing aroma.
 • Screw the top on the soap dispenser, shake well, and use when ready.

If you want to enter the world of DIY beauty products, lip balms are the perfect entry point. They are not extremely difficult to make, and you can customize their flavor using different essential oils. In the case of the recipe in this article, we chose an essential oil that evokes the holiday spirit. All you need is a double boiler and four ingredients to make this lip balm!

When people look at DIY recipes, they often see a double boiler on the list of required items or tools. You don’t need a double boiler, but you can get one if you plan on making a lot of homemade beauty products. You can make your own double boiler variation in two easy ways. Both ways involve a pot that contains an inch or so of water in it. Place that pot on the stove over medium heat. Once the water is warm, place the ingredients you need to melt inside a heat-safe glass jar or measuring cup. Don’t let the water boil and stir until fully melted. The other option is to place a heat-safe glass bowl over the top of the pot with water. The heat that builds up in the pot will help melt the ingredients in the bowl above.

Shea Butter

Shea butter boasts a long list of moisturizing and nourishing compounds. One of the best benefits is that it is enriched with emollient properties and health fats, which the skin can easily absorb for optimal hydration. Even the driest of skin types are no match for shea butter’s moisturizing properties. Applying shea butter to your lips supplies them with extra nutrients without weighing them down. Shea butter doesn’t leave your lips feeling greasy or textured either. Plus, the humectant properties work to prevent moisture loss during the winter months.

Beeswax

You are probably familiar with the many beeswax lip balms in existence, and for good reason. Beeswax is an excellent ingredient for lip balms because it helps to seal in moisture and protect against dryness. It works to create a barrier between your lips and the environment, making it ideal for cold, windy weather. Like shea butter, beeswax is a natural substance that is not likely to cause allergic reactions or irritation. Finally, the anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe chapped or irritated lips.

Coconut Oil

Just like shea butter and beeswax, coconut oil offers impressive moisturizing properties, making it ideal for chapped lips. The reason that lips are susceptible to moisture loss is because the skin is so thin. They are more exposed to the elements than other parts of the skin, so they rely on you for protection. Coconut oil is considered to be an emollient, which is a non-cosmetic moisturizer that helps keep the skin moist. Emollients trap moisture into the skin, which is good news for your lips because they lose moisture easily.

A Quick Note

One thing to note is that if you cannot get the Christmas Spirit essential oil, you can make a similar blend. All you need is three drops of cinnamon bark essential oil, three drops of orange essential oil, and one drop of Idaho blue spruce essential oil. You only need seven drops because you don’t want the scent to be overpowering, although you can add more if you so desire.

All-Natural Holiday Lip Balm

Ingredients:

 • 1 tablespoon beeswax pellets
 • 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil
 • 1 tablespoon shea butter
 • 7 drops Christmas Spirit essential oil
 • Lip balm containers

Instructions:

 • Create a double boiler by adding two inches of water to a pot and place it on the stove over medium heat.
 • Combine the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter in a heat-safe glass jar and sit it inside the pot. Slowly bring the water to a boil and reduce the hit so that the water simmers.
 • Once the ingredients are fully melted, stir well and then carefully remove the pot from heat. Add the essential oil and stir to combine.
 • Carefully pour or spoon the melted mixture into the lip balm containers. Allow the balm to harden at room temperature, and then it is ready for immediate use.

Got a case of frizz or fly-aways that you just can’t seem to tame? Well, you are not alone, and many people struggle to tame frizz for years. After trying different hair products that don’t work, it’s easy to give up on your search and let your hair do whatever it will do. Don’t give up your search just yet, though, because the serum in this article may be the product that solves your hair problems.

In this serum, it’s all about the oils. Most people, especially those with frizzy hair, find that oils are greatly beneficial in their quest to smoother, healthier hair. All of the oils in this serum work to nourish the hair and scalp. Continue reading to learn more about them.

Olive Oil

It’s not surprising that people have used olive oil in hair care for thousands of years. Olive oil helps to add shine, body, softness, and resilience to your hair. The primary elements, squalene, palmitic acid, and oleic acid, are all emollients that exhibit softening qualities. Some research shows that olive oil can have a major moisturizing effect on your hair. Olive oil tends to be most beneficial for people with dry, thick hair, because it works to keep it moist and strong. It does tend to weigh down thinner hair, so keep this in mind.

Argan Oil

Some people refer to argan oil as “liquid gold” because of how it benefits the skin and hair. Argan oil is replete with fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E, all of which have been scientifically proven to nourish the hair and scalp. Studies show that the fatty acids in argan oil help to lubricate the hair shaft, which helps you maintain moisture. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in argan oil also nourish the scalp and help protect against hair loss. Argan oil is great for people who experience styling and coloring damage, because the medium-chain fatty acids help prevent damage that stems from styling and washing.

Jojoba Oil

There are so many hair care products that contain jojoba oil, so we’d be surprised if you’d never heard of this oil. Jojoba oil isn’t actually an oil; rather, it is a wax ester, but most people just call it an oil. It has a moisturizing effect on the skin and hair, and its light and impermeable nature means that it sits on the surface of the hair shaft. As a result, it is able to seal moisture into the hair and scalp while they are still damp. Other oils penetrate the hair shaft, but jojoba sits on the outer surface, protecting it from dryness, frizz, and breakage.

Lavender Essential Oil

A few studies and anecdotal reports say that lavender essential oil may help accelerate hair growth. Lavender oil contains properties that may generate the growth of cells and reduce stress, which may generate faster hair growth. The antimicrobial and antibacterial properties in lavender essential oil may also help improve the health of your scalp.

Peppermint Essential Oil

When you use a hair care product that contains peppermint essential oil, you may notice a tingling feeling on the scalp. This feel actually increases circulation to the scalp, which helps promote hair growth during the anagen (growing) phase. An animal study found that peppermint essential oil was able to increase the number of follicles, folic depth, and overall hair growth when used on mice.

DIY Hair Serum For Frizzy Hair

Ingredients:

 • 1 tablespoon organic jojoba oil
 • 1 tablespoon organic argan oil
 • 2 tablespoons olive oil
 • 16 drops lavender essential oil
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

 • Pour all of the ingredients into a glass bottle or jar.
 • Screw on the top and shake gently to combine.
 • Apply a dime- to quarter-sized amount of oil to damp hair, concentrating most of it on the ends.

Water plays an integral role in regards to your overall health. It’s the beverage of life that helps to keep your skin healthy, smooth, and radiant, yet so many people don’t drink enough of it. For this reason, it makes sense that every skin care aisle contains products that promise to hydrate and moisturize the skin. Although people use these terms interchangeably, they are not one and the same. Both hydrators and moisturizers work to nourish the skin, but knowing the difference can help you determine which is right for your skin.

What’s The Difference Between Hydrating And Moisturizing?

Moisturizer is an umbrella term for the following types of moisturizers: emollients (fats and oils, occlusives, and squalene (oil). The terminology gets a bit of a makeover when it comes to beauty products, though. In fact, a 2017 study found that there was some gray area when it came to distinguishing hydrators from moisturizers. Moisturizing is all about trapping moisture and sealing it into the skin in order to form a protective barrier. This helps prevent water loss and keeps the skin as soft and smooth as possible. Moisturizes are oil-based ingredients, which is how they prevent water from escaping the skin.

Hydration refers to the water content within the cells that makes them plump and bouncy, making them reflect light well. If your skin cells are dehydrated, they shrivel up and your skin can look dull. If you use a topical hydrator, though, you work to infuse your skin cells with water and improve your skin’s ability to absorb nutrients and moisture. Humectants, for example, are great hydrators because they increase the skin’s hydration by attracting water molecules from the environment to your skin. Additionally, humectants draw moisture levels from deeper layers of the skin, bringing them from the dermis to the epidermis.

Which Is Best For Your Skin?

With so many creams, lotions, balms, ointments, moisturizers, and hydrators to choose from, how do you know which one is best for your skin? The truth is, most of them do the same exact thing. Most skin lotions contain both occlusive, emollient, and humectant ingredients, so they moisturize and hydrate at the same time. Whether the product comes in gel, balm, oil, or cream form doesn’t affect how it performs. The form merely affects the experience of applying the product to your skin.

For Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, a thicker moisturizer will help restore your skin to its natural plump state. This isn’t always true because your skin may not be dry; rather, it may be dehydrated, in which case a hydrator is necessary. If you want to know whether or not your skin is dehydrated, you have to pay attention to your skin’s condition. The skin has a natural lipid barrier that protects itself from environmental damage and water loss. Dry, flaky skin is an indication that it doesn’t produce enough lipid cells to form that protective barrier. That’s why a moisturizer may come in handy if you suffer from dry skin

For Oily Skin

It’s important to note that oily skin can still be dehydrated. In fact, dehydrated skin can increase oiliness and the issues that come with it. Oily skin typically indicates that the skin barrier is compromised, which makes it more difficult for the skin to retain moisture. Moisture escapes the skin and it becomes dehydrated, and produces more oil as a result. The only way to break this cycle is to give your skin the proper hydration that it needs. Look for water-based, non-comedogenic hydrators and moisturizers because water-based products don’t clog your pores and feel lighter on the skin.

For Dehydrated Skin

The only way to fix dehydrated skin is to rehydrate it. That means that you have to actively add water back into your skin, and the best way to do that is by applying a hydrating serum that contains hyaluronic acid. This ingredient retains 1,000 times its weight in water, so it helps to plump up those skin cells to get your skin looking youthful and refreshed again. Aloe vera and honey are also great ingredients to look out for. Above all else, drink plenty of water and eat water-rich foods if you want to hydrate the skin.

It’s safe to say that most people have a nighttime skin care routine. Perhaps there is some combination of a cleanser or scrub, moisturizer, spot treatment, or mask included in this routine. Some nighttime face creams or oils just don’t seem to cut it, though. That means that you wake up with moisturized pillows and unnaturally dry skin. So how do you retain moisture and wake up with hydrated, glowing skin?

Overnight face masks, also called sleeping masks, can help your skin retain moisture while you sleep. The thicker consistency makes it so the mask actually stays in place overnight. The best part is that the recipe is fragrance-free and made with ingredients that don’t irritate the skin. If you have sensitive skin, these ingredients won’t aggravate it. Additionally, it doesn’t contain lemon juice, milk tomatoes, turmeric, or other food ingredients, so it won’t stain your bedding. To avoid oil stains, you may want to cover your pillow with a soft towel while you sleep, or use a pillowcase that you don’t mind getting oil on.

Squalane Oil

What is squalane oil and how does it benefit your skin? Squalene is a natural lipid that your skin cells produce, but this production slows with age. It is a natural moisturizer that peaks in production during your 20s and 30s, which is why skin tends to get dryer as you get older. Squalane is a saturated byproduct of squalene oil, a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon. Squalane is the derivative of squalene, and it benefits the hair, skin, and nails because the body knows how to use it. When you apply it topically, squalane oil can help boost hydration to make the skin look more vibrant and youthful. There are antioxidants in squalane that also help to fight free radicals, which contribute to premature signs of aging. Regular use may also help boost collagen production, resulting in firmer skin.

Vitamin E Oil

The body needs vitamin E to support optimal immune function, as it helps the body’s cells regenerate. It’s a natural antioxidant that exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great nutrient for skin care. Vitamin E oil is a powerful anti-aging treatment that you can use on your face, as well as other areas of the skin. It does have a thicker consistency, which is why beauty experts encourage you to apply it before bed. This gives your skin time to fully absorb the oil. When you condition your skin with vitamin E oil overnight, you help to increase hydration and reduce inflammation. Together, those effects help your skin appear younger.

Beeswax

There are many reasons why you should use beeswax topically on the skin. In fact, the use of beeswax in skin care regimens dates back to the times of the Ancient Egyptians. Beeswax contains antibacterial agents, which help to accelerate the healing of burns and small wounds. It may also be beneficial for certain skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. Beeswax is also a fabulous emollient, which helps to soften dry, rough, or flakey skin. Emollients and moisturizers are not the same thing, even though people think they are. Emollients like beeswax cover the skin with a thin, protective layer that helps to trap in moisture, so that your skin can retain it for much longer.

DIY Overnight Face Mask

Ingredients:

 • 3 tablespoons beeswax pellets
 • 1/2 cup squalane oil
 • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • In the top of a small double boiler over medium-low heat, melt the beeswax pellet. Stir frequently to break up any lumps.
 • Once the beeswax is melted, reduce the heat to low and pour in the squalane oil. Continue stirring in case the beeswax starts to clump.
 • Completely melt the mixture and then remove it from heat, allowing it to cool for a few minutes before adding the vitamin E. Mix to combine.
 • Pour the mixture into a cosmetic mason jar, or other glass container that you have. Leave at room temperature so the mixture can solidify. Screw on the lid and store in a cool, dry place.
 • When ready to use, apply a small amount to your face before bed. Wash your face in the morning and pat dry.

The great thing about homemade body washes is that they are very easy to make. Dare we say that the recipe in this article is tasty? We aren’t saying that you should give this soap a taste test, but the scent is powerful and zesty, almost like a dessert. Not only does it smell great, but it also nourishes the skin in the best way. We’ll explain how it does this by highlighting some of the standout ingredients below.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a small tree and the extract from the tree is a popular astringent. You can purchase witch hazel online or in stores in the skin care section. Many people use it as a toner, or they incorporate it into homemade moisturizers, lotions, and cleansers. Witch hazel has been used as a home remedy for various skin conditions for centuries. The astringent properties help remove excess oil, making it a great product for people with oily skin.

Witch hazel also aids with inflammation reduction. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, including tannins and gallic acid, work to reduce redness and soothe skin. In fact, this is why it is a popular home remedy for sunburn relief. For people with acne, or those who are prone to breakouts, witch hazel works to dry out blemishes and remove excess oil and bacteria. Finally, it may work to reduce itchiness and inflammation that results from insect bites, eczema, psoriasis, and more.

Castile Soap

Castile soap originated in Castile, Spain, and the original soap was made from pure olive oil and sodium carbonate. Over the years, though, the formula has evolved to include various plant-based oils and lye. Sometimes, Castile soap contains coconut oil, walnut oil, almond oil, and hemp oil, but olive oil-based soap is still the most popular. It is a biodegradable, ethically produced, vegan soap that is free of harmful chemicals. In addition to being an eco-friendly soap, Castile soap is very hydrating. It works to cleanse and moisturize the skin, which researchers attribute to the high glycerin content. Although Castile soap is a great body wash, it also works as a makeup remover, facial cleanser, and shaving oil.

Almond Oil

There are two main types of almond oil: bitter and sweet. These two varieties are derived from the almond tree that is common in Mediterranean countries. Manufacturers extract the oil from almonds by grinding them, and they may use heat or chemical solvents to refine the oil. Cold-pressed almond oil is also available and is much better for the skin and beauty applications. Almond oil is both an emollient and a moisturizer, so it helps to keep the skin hydrated. Emollients work to smooth out the skin, filling in cracks or gaps that can cause dryness, while moisturizers supply the skin with water.

One study found that emollients including refined almond oil were able to relieve itching and improved skin barrier function. Additionally, another study found that a moisturizer containing almond oil was able to relieve symptoms of eczema. Another study found that almond oil may reduce premature signs of aging by protecting skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation.

Homemade Grapefruit Mint Body Wash

Ingredients:

 • 1 cup water
 • 2/3 cup witch hazel
 • 1/4 cup Castile soap
 • 1/4 cup almond oil
 • 20 drops grapefruit essential oil
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
 • Foaming hand soap dispenser

Instructions:

 • Add all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl and mix well to combine.
 • Place a funnel into the foaming hand soap dispenser and pour the mixture into the dispenser via the funnel. You should be able to fill two 8.5-ounce dispensers with this mixture.
 • Make sure that you leave about an inch of room at the top of the dispenser for residual foam. Screw on the top and use when ready.

The post Humectants: Why They Are Necessary For Skin Care appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Most commercial skin or hair care products that have moisturizing properties contain at least one humectant. More often than not, humectants exist in leave-on hydrating products, including lotions, creams, and serums. Humectants attract water and help draw moisture to the outermost layer of the skin. This process helps to improve overall complexion and keeps the skin moisturized.

What Are Humectants?

Humectants are agents that attract water molecules and retain them. They pull water from the skin’s second layer, the dermis, and bring it to the top layer, the epidermis. In doing so, they help to reduce dryness, improve complexion, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Humectants are beneficial for people with sensitive skin, dry skin, or people who have drying skin conditions like eczema. Common natural humectants include sugar, aloe vera, honey, beeswax, and sorbitol.

How Do Humectants Work?

Think of humectants as water magnets, pulling moisture from the air into the skin. They work similarly if you use hair care products that contain humectants, drawing moisture to help your hair look less dry. Not all humectants work in the same way, though. Some supply the skin and hair with moisture directly, while others double as exfoliants, removing dead skin cells and debris before leaving your skin a little smoother. The exfoliation process and moisture attraction assists with cell turnover, which is integral for healthy-looking skin. Lastly, you cannot use humectants interchangeably for the skin and hair. That’s why some humectants in hair care products may not be in skin care products and vice versa.

After applying the humectant, it attracts moisture. After exposure to the air, it starts attracting moisture from surrounding oxygen and deeper layers of the skin. In doing so, the moisture remains on your skin’s surface to keep it hydrated for a longer time. Using humectants, then, may help prevent water loss throughout the day. By reducing dryness, you can help create even skin texture and fewer fine lines and dry patches.

Types Of Humectants

The three primary moisturizing ingredients in skin care products include humectants, emollients, and occlusives. They work in different ways, but together they help to lock moisture into the skin to create a physical barrier against drying. To get a better idea of the humectants that exists, read about a few of the best natural humectants below.

Aloe Vera

Aloe is naturally rich in water, especially the innermost layer. In addition to the inherent moisture, the mucopolysaccharides (sugars in aloe) assist with moisture retention. In fact, several studies found that the topical application of aloe vera helps increase the water content of the statum corneum.

Oats

The polysaccharides (long sugars) in oats help bind water to the skin’s surface. That’s not the only reason that oats are excellent for adding moisture to the skin. Colloidal oats contain lipids that have emollient properties, helping to fill in micro-cracks in the skin that may contribute to irritation or dryness. The emollients and humectant in colloidal oats make them an excellent option for people with dry skin conditions.

Honey

If you use honey on the skin, it’s best to opt for organic, raw unfiltered honey because it doesn’t contain added sugars or preservatives. The rich antioxidant and antimicrobial nature of honey helps to fight dryness, psoriasis, fine lines, and infections. In addition to the humectant properties that contribute to moisture retention, honey helps to calm inflammation and promote wound healing.

Glycerin

Most hydrating products contain glycerin, which typically comes from vegetable oils or animal fats. It mixes well with other ingredients and helps to soften skin while enhancing moisture retention. Not only does it help hydrate the skin, but it also improves skin barrier function, which can prevent moisture loss. Additionally, enhancing skin barrier function may accelerate wound healing and reduce any irritation on the skin.

That’s why it’s beneficial for people with dry skin to use skin care products, be they DIY or store bought, that contain emollients.

What Are Emollients?

Emollients are ingredients that work to maintain skin elasticity, softness, and smoothness. Remaining in the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the epidermis, emollients fill in the crevices between proteins that are in the shedding process. Emollients may help to reverse dryness, scaling, fine lines, and wrinkles. According to dermatologists, emollients are especially beneficial for managing symptoms of psoriasis, ichthyosis, and eczema.

In order to enhance the benefits of emollients, it’s highly beneficial to combine them with moisturizing ingredients. In the case of this recipe, for example, you combine beeswax (emollient) with squalene oil (moisturizer). Both moisturizers and emollients contain humectants and occlusives. Humectants work to increase the amount of water that the stratum corneum can hold, while occlusives provide a layer of oil to the skin, helping the stratum corneum retain moisture by reducing water loss.

Causes Of Dry Skin

You can experience dry skin when the stratum corneum lacks water. Losing moistures causes the skin to lose elasticity, making it look scaly or cracked. What causes the stratum corneum to lose water, though? Well, there are many things that contribute to dry skin, but the environment is typically the primary culprit, which is why d skin is common during dryer, colder temperatures. Additionally, transitioning between cold outdoor weather and dry indoor heat negatively affects the skin.

As you age, the skin loses its ability to produce natural oil and maintain moisture. This tends to start around age 50, but certain medications like diuretics, thyroid disorders, or skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can accelerate this process. If you know that you have dry skin, proper hygiene is paramount. Please understand that the combination of hot water and soap naturally strips the skin of natural oils. Unless you apply an emollient directly after washing, the skin will dry out faster than it should.

In order to avoid dry facial skin, use the following overnight moisturizing mask. It contains beeswax, vitamin E oil, and squalene oil, all of which help to seal moisture into the skin.

DIY Moisturizing Overnight Mask

Ingredients:

 • 3 tablespoons white beeswax pellets
 • 1/2 cup squalene oil
 • 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil

Instructions:

 • Using a double boiler method, melt the beeswax pellets. In order to do this, add one inch of water to a heavy-bottomed pot. Bring the water to a simmer over medium heat and then add a heat-safe glass measuring cup with the beeswax pellets to the pot.
 • Once the beeswax is fully melted, reduce the heat to a low simmer and pour in the squalene oil. Continue stirring to break up any bumps that may form.
 • After the mixture is completely melted and combined, remove from heat and allow it to cool for a couple minutes.
 • Stir in the vitamin E oil and then transfer the mixture to a cosmetic jar or glass container. Leave the mixture at room temperature for one to two hours; refrigeration is not necessary. Use nightly after washing and drying your face.

When the weather is dry and cold, the skin can always use a little extra attention. If it isn’t the brisk wind outside, indoor heating or frequent hand washing may easily dry out the skin. Whatever the reason, dry skin is no laughing matter. Fortunately, there are easy ways to provide it with moisture. One of the best ways to do that is to lather the skin with the balm in this article.

If you are familiar with our content, especially in relation to skin care, you know that using natural ingredients is our top priority. There’s no reason to moisturize with products that contain harmful chemicals. Not only can some of these chemicals disrupt endocrine function, but they can also wreak havoc on sensitive skin. It’s better and healthier to ditch the store bought creams and lotions and use fragrance-free, chemical-free recipes that moisturize. Plus, you can typically save yourself a lot of money and avoid negative skin reactions when you make your own skin care products

Sweet Almond Oil

Almond oil tends to remain on the skin’s surface, and it exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It’s considered to be both a moisturizer and an emollient. While moisturizers supply the skin with water and hold it in with an oily substance, emollients soothe the skin and fill in gaps. Emollients don’t necessarily add moisture; rather, they help the skin retain it by improving the skin barrier function. That makes sweet almond oil excellent for helping the skin retain moisture during dryer climates.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

According to several research studies, using extra virgin olive oil to moisturize dry skin is excellent. Olive oil is rich in fatty acids, including oleic acid, linoleic acids, palmitic acid, and more. Similar to sweet almond oil, olive oil is an emollient, meaning it contributes to smoother, softer skin by locking in moisture. Olive oil is also known as an occlusive moisturizer, meaning that it coats the skin and seals in moisture simultaneously, ensuring that moisture doesn’t evaporate.

Beeswax

Beeswax generally works for all skin types, but this all depends on the concentration of the beeswax. People with dry skin may greatly benefit from applying beeswax on the skin. It is just like olive oil in that it’s an occlusive moisturizer, so it creates a protective layer on the skin. That helps seal in moisture to keep the skin looking hydrated and healthy. Beeswax also exhibits anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, which help to protect the skin. Another benefit of beeswax is that it contains lots of vitamin A, which works to fight fine lines and wrinkles.

Homemade Skin Balm

Ingredients:

 • 2 tablespoons each: extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil
 • 2 teaspoons beeswax pellets
 • 10 drops peppermint essential oil
 • 8 drops lavender essential oil
 • 4 drops lemon essential oil

Instructions:

 • Begin by adding the olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax into a bowl over a double boiler. Make sure there is an inch or so of water in the bottom of the double boiler.
 • Allow the oils and wax to melt over medium-low heat. Stir well throughout the heating process to thoroughly combine the ingredients.
 • Remove from the heat and then add the essential oils. It’s important that you don’t add the essential oils during the heating process as the heat can alter their chemical structures.
 • Mix well and then pour into a glass jar, or container of your choice. Allow it to thicken and then keep in a cool, dry place. It has a shelf life of about six months.

When people leave the house, they check pockets or purses and bags for their keys, wallet, phone, and lip balms and chapsticks. Well, now they also have to check for masks because of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s safe to assume say that people own multiple tubes or tins of lip balm because chapped or dry lips are all too common. What easier way to quickly remedy the problem than by coating your lips with a moisturizing layer of hydrating ingredients?

The Benefits Of Lip Balm

Some lip balms are more beneficial than others because of the ingredients. What if you could make a lip balm with three simple ingredients? Rather than spending money on lip balms at grocery store check stands, buy a few ingredients that you can easily transform into your own lip balm time and time again. The ingredients you’ll need for the recipe in this article are beeswax, coconut oil, and eucalyptus essential oil. Continue reading to learn more about the benefits of lip balm and why you should make your own.

Let Your Skin Heal Faster

One of the primary benefits of lip balm is that it offers faster healing if you suffer from dry or chapped lips. The reason that your lips chap easily is because the skin is thinner on the lips than it is on the face. This causes the skin to dry out much more quickly, resulting in unattractive and mildly embarrassing chapped lips. Lip balm works to hydrate your lips so you can avoid cracking or peeling skin on the lips.

SPF Protection

More often than not, lip balms contain some mild SPF protection, which helps to protect your lips from ultraviolet rays. The lips can easily burn in the sun, so applying a lip balm can help you avoid sunburn. When the lips burn, peeling or chapped lips are quick to arrive. The lip balm recipe in this article contains coconut oil, which helps protect your skin from UV radiation.

More Youthful And Plump

If you want plump and healthy lips, look no further than a great lip balm. When the skin on your lips is regularly dry, it lacks the necessary moisture it needs for optimal collagen production. Collagen is necessary for healthy skin and plump lips that look youthful. Additionally, regularly applying lip balm hydrates your lips to give them a suppler appearance. You’ll be photo-ready in no time!

The reason we like using natural ingredients is because you get the benefits straight from the source. There are no other chemicals, fragrances, dyes, or artificial ingredients that inhibit the absorption of essential nutrients from the main ingredients. Allow your body to absorb the emollient properties of beeswax and coconut oil without anything else getting in the way. In case you are unaware, emollients are moisturizers that help the skin retain moisture by protecting the outer layer of skin. Since lips lose moisture rapidly, it’s beneficial to use emollients on the lips. See the recipe for a DIY lip balm below.

DIY Lip Balm

Ingredients:

 • 3 tablespoons virgin coconut oil
 • 5 tablespoons beeswax
 • 12 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Instructions:

 • Pour two inches of water into a medium-sized saucepan and place over medium heat.
 • Put the coconut oil and beeswax in a heat-safe glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Place this in the saucepan and allow the oil and beeswax to melt.
 • If the water starts to boil, reduce it to a low flame and simmer until thoroughly melted. Use a wooden utensil to stir the melted oil and beeswax.
 • Remove the saucepan from the heat and drop in the essential oil to the oil mixture. Stir gently before pouring this mixture into two-ounce tin containers.
 • Allow the mixture to set (roughly 10 minutes or so) before screwing on the tops.
