What inspires you to create a new smoothie recipe? Some people see an attractive smoothie on Tik Tok or Instagram and want to replicate it in their own kitchen. Others tend to find inspiration from seasonal ingredients, and it is the case for this smoothie recipe. Honeydew, and other melons, are readily available during the summer, which is when they tend to be the juiciest. Since melons offer intense sweetness, you don’t need other fruit to create a sweeter flavor profile. In fact, some neutral and slightly bitter ingredients work well with melons.

Instead of bananas, we are using half an avocado to establish a creamier texture. The ice cubes will give the smoothie that slushie, icy texture that will help to cool you off on a hot summer day. The addition of avocado helps to increase your intake of potassium, magnesium, and monounsaturated fats. Too often do people consume unhealthy fats, which contribute to a higher risk of heart disease. Healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids, which are in foods like avocados, work to reduce inflammation, boost heart health, and enhance cognitive function. Even if you are not the biggest fan of avocado, you will not taste it in this smoothie.

Finally, we have the addition of kale, which offers vitamin K, magnesium, protein, fiber, chlorophyll, antioxidants, and more. Kale received a lot of attention as a superfood, and rightly so! It makes a great addition to anyone’s diet, benefitting the digestive system and increasing your omega-3 intake. Kale also contains folate, which is integral for healthy brain development. In fact, folate is essential for pregnant women because it helps to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in babies.

In addition to being one of the tastiest dips in existence, guacamole is incredibly nutritious. It contains essential nutrients like magnesium, fiber, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and powerful antioxidants. The omega-3s and antioxidants work to support cardiovascular system function, decreasing the risk of cardiovascular-related illnesses. While there are recipes that include mango, tomato, yogurt, jalapeños, and more, there aren’t many that include a sneaky dose of veggies. That’s why we want to share this recipe with you!

Adding a veggie boost to your guacamole supercharges it with more nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties. How do you get a super dose of greens? It’s very simple: you include Dherbs’ Vegan Green Powder Mix in the dip. Our signature superfood blend is rich in vitamins and minerals, works to boost energy levels, and helps maintain healthy oxygenation throughout the body. By feeding the body ingredients like alfalfa leaf, barley grass, moringa leaf, nettle leaf, spinach, and spirulina, you can help balance pH levels and assist in weight loss. Because the ingredients in the Green Powder Mix are all green, it naturally contains a lot of chlorophyll. Helping to neutralize free radicals, chlorophyll is a powerful compound that we need to survive. Without it, plants could not produce oxygen for us to breathe!

Adding the Green Powder Mix to a dip like guacamole is a great way to give yourself a nutritional boost. It may alter the taste of the dip, but new flavors aren not always a bad thing. Should you desire a little heat or extra zest, feel free to add diced jalapeño and freshly squeezed lime juice. Much like the Green Powder Mix, lime juice also works to balance pH levels in the body. If you modify the dip in any way, please let us know what you add!

Everyone is familiar with the phrase “eat your greens.” It’s been drilled into most people’s brains since childhood. Even though some people embrace green vegetables for their health benefits and flavors, others rarely eat them. In fact, a 2017 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that only 1 in 10 American adults eats enough fruits and vegetables daily. That is a major problem, considering the amount of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients that produce provides.

Before we continue, it’s important to note that most dietitians endorse the concept of “eating the rainbow.” This means that it’s beneficial to eat produce items across the color spectrum. Not only do different colored produce items exhibit different nutritional profiles, but they also contain specific phytonutrients and antioxidants. For example, lycopene gives tomatoes their rich redness, and chlorophyll gives green vegetables their color.

There are many green vegetables in existence, so this article is not solely focused on leafy greens. There are some leafy greens on this list because, well, they are just that beneficial to your health. Read on to see which greens you should add to your diet, if you don’t consume them already.

Asparagus

What a wonderful spear the asparagus is! It’s an incredible spring vegetable with a fibrous stalk that’s chock full of vitamins C & K and iron. Asparagus is also rich in several B vitamins, including niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, and B6. B vitamins assist with making energy from the food you eat and aiding red blood cell formation. Asparagus also contains inulin, a type of soluble fiber that acts as a prebiotic, stimulating healthy bacterial growth in the gut

Microgreens

Microgreens are immature greens that come from the seeds of vegetables and herbs. Even though they may only be one to three inches big, they are rich sources of powerful nutrients and flavors. One study found that microgreens may exhibit 40 times more nutrients than their mature counterparts. Some of these nutrients include vitamins C, E, and K.

Basil

Enhance the flavor of your meals with herbaceous basil, an herb that is rich in numerous antioxidants. Two such antioxidants include caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid, both of which exhibit neuroprotective properties. Basil also contains eugenol, an essential oil that may help reduce inflammation. One review found that eugenol’s anti-inflammatory properties have the potential to be a complementary treatment for inflammatory diseases.

Avocado

Who doesn’t love avocado? It’s always worth the extra charge! The buttery, rich texture goes great on sandwiches, inside burritos, or as a smooth dip. Avocados are some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are monounsaturated fats that may help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. Additionally, avocados contain vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that helps protect the body from harmful free radicals. Lastly, avocados contain lutein, another antioxidant that helps protect the eyes.

Kiwi

Kiwi fruit is one of the best sources of vitamin C, with one kiwi offering 71% of the recommended daily intake. The fruit also contains folate, which is is necessary for making DNA and other genetic material. Folate is crucial for fetal development, but it also assists with helping cells divide. One small study found that kiwi may contribute to a better night’s sleep. Eating kiwi fruit helps to increase serotonin, which may benefit people who have sleep disturbances.

Green Beans

Green beans, or string beans, are excellent sources of fiber and have a low glycemic load, making them excellent for diabetics. In fact, the Mayo Clinic suggests that diabetics eat green beans because they are slowly digested. This contributes to a lower and slower rise in blood sugar, so you don’t have to fear spikes. You can eat them raw, but cooking them in olive oil with some garlic, onions, and fresh lemon juice makes a great side dish.

Seaweed

Seaweed is a mineral-rich green vegetable that should be on your grocery list if it isn’t already. Dried seaweed is an excellent source of iron, according to the National Institutes of Health, satisfying 21% of your recommended daily intake in 1 cup. A 2016 study found that seaweed may be a sodium-free replacement for salt in certain dishes because the flavor is naturally salty. Lastly, seaweed is one of the richest sources of iodine, an essential trace mineral necessary for nervous system, metabolic, and musculoskeletal function.

Green juices and green smoothies have one primary nutrient in common: chlorophyll. This nutrient, as you may remember from chemistry class, plays an important role in making plants green and healthy. It is naturally rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and therapeutic properties that can improve overall health. Chlorophyll actually has a very similar molecular structure to the hemoglobin that is in human blood. The primary difference is that hemoglobin contains iron and chlorophyll contains magnesium. That being said, chlorophyll may have the ability to improve the quality of red blood cells.

That was a lot to take in for an intro to a green juice! Well, green juices and smoothies are nothing short of excellent for your cells, tissues, and organs. This recipe, in particular, has an array of ingredients with powerful flavors. The apple and cucumber provide some sweetness, which balances the assertive ginger, fennel, and kale. That said, this is definitely a juice for the familiar green juice drinker, the green juice aficionado if you will. It has powerful flavor that can be a little bitter for someone just getting into juicing.

Green juice may help to reduce inflammation because greens have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a normal response when the immune system is triggered, but chronic inflammation presents more serious problems. Excess inflammation in the body can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and allergies. A green juice may also contribute to enhanced immune function. Many nutrient-dense super foods that boost immunity include leafy greens, pineapple, ginger, lemon, and celery. Additionally, drinking green juice may contribute to clearer skin. As stated earlier, chlorophyll helps to nourish cells, and the other antioxidants in this green juice also promote clearer complexion.

Is it too hot outside to think about cooking? That means it’s time for a kale salad. Do you feel sluggish and need a diverse blend of nutrients? It’s time for a kale salad. Are your jeans tighter than normal? Time for a kale salad. Are you seeing a trend here? It’s always time for a kale salad, especially when it’s this recipe.

Kale salads can be hit or miss. A common mistake that people make when making kale salads is that they don’t massage the leaves and chop them well. Kale is very fibrous and requires you to manually break it down for a more pleasant eating experience. Additionally, you must remove the thick, fibrous stems, otherwise you’ll be chomping on bitter, crunchy kale bits. Nobody wants that.

Why do sweet ingredients work with kale? Kale is naturally bitter and has an assertive flavor. For this reason, sweet ingredients like blueberries, dates, apples, dried cranberries, or dried cherries work well in kale salads. You can’t just have sweet ingredients in the salad, though. That’s where the apple cider vinaigrette comes in. The acidic dressing is the secret to the success of this salad. It bridges the gap between the sweet and bitter ingredients and creates for a sensational eating experience. We hope you love it.

It’s never a bad idea to begin your day with a refreshing green smoothie that promotes natural detoxification. Now, if that smoothie contains ingredients that help hydrate the body, it’s even better. Cucumbers are some of the best water-rich produce items out there. Eating them, or drinking them in the case of this smoothie, helps promote hydration. Additionally, cucumbers work to promote the removal of excess waste from your system. They do this by lubricating the digestive tract, aiding your body’s ability to digest and eliminate food waste.

This smoothie also contains grapes! Sorry, but we get excited about grapes because we rarely feature them in our recipes. Grapes are naturally rich in vitamins C & K, in addition to vitamin B6, potassium, copper, and manganese. They also contain a high concentration of antioxidants, which help to reduce oxidative stress in the body. In fact, there are over 1,600 beneficial plant compounds in grapes! How amazing is that? Anyways, that’s why we love grapes. Plus…they taste amazing, and are underutilized in the smoothie game.

The idea that an overly acidic body leads to a variety of illnesses is not a new concept. In his 1933 publication of A New Health Era, Dr. William Howard Hay argued that all diseases are caused by “self-poisoning,” due to the accumulation of acid in the body.

The presence of too much acid weakens the body and it can become dangerous for your organs and systems. The blood needs to have a 7.4 pH because a change in blood pH of 0.2 could be lethal. Now, the body doesn’t want to drop dead; therefore, it borrows essential minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium from other organs and bones to neutralize the acidity. This is why people may not realize that they have highly acidic bodies for years.

Too much acidity is caused by poor nutrition. Americans typically consume acidifying foods like meats, processed ingredients, dairy products, refined carbs, and oily foods with saturated fats. Habits like drinking caffeine, smoking cigarettes, or consuming alcohol also contribute to acidifying the body.

How Do You Make The Body More Alkaline?

Let’s clear this up: drinking alkaline water and consuming a Standard American Diet is not going to make the body more alkaline. Since the body is 80% alkaline and 20% acidic, it is recommended to balance your diet according to those percentages. The acid/alkaline balance is integral to maintain healthy tissues, cells, and fluids. There are some foods like citrus fruits, all of which are considered acidic. When ingested, however, they supply the body with alkaline minerals. The diet is the most efficient way to balance your pH levels, which is why we are giving you some of the best alkaline foods!

Spinach

From a nutritional standpoint, spinach is one of the most complete foods out there. It is rich in vitamins A, C B2, B9, E, & K, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, and dietary fiber. These minerals help the body to complete its primary functions. Additionally, spinach is rich in chlorophyll, which is incredibly alkaline and beneficial for the blood.

Chestnuts

Chestnuts are number one when it comes to alkaline-forming nuts. Their alkalizing effect on the body is primarily due to the high water content (about 52%). Chestnuts are also rich in vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant. You can also consume chestnuts to increase your intake of manganese, copper, magnesium, folate, and vitamins B1, B2, and B6.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are about 95% water, which is where most of the benefits come from. They are also low in calories and high in antioxidants like lignans, which have been associated with inhibiting chronic diseases. Cucumbers can be used in various ways and contain selenium, copper, potassium, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, C, K, and B-complex.

Lemons

Even though these are acidic outside the body, lemons deliver alkaline minerals when you ingest them. Each lemon has a pH of 9.0, which helps to alkalize the blood during digestion. They are also rich in potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, dietary fiber, and the mighty vitamin C! Remember: lemons are not acidic in the body, even though they have the citric acid taste.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a great source of plant-based protein and contains tons of chlorophyll, which can help with cell production. The dietary fiber in broccoli also aids with the reduction of blood acidity. Broccoli is commonly recommended for cardiovascular health because it boosts the immune system and supports the metabolic process. The potassium in broccoli works to remove excess sodium from the body, which is beneficial for people who are trying to lower their blood pressure.

It is beneficial to start eating a lot of plant-based foods to help alkalize the body. Continually eating acidic foods with minimal fruit & vegetable intake is a surefire way to maintain an acidic body. Focus on legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

Other Alkaline Foods Include:

  • Celery
  • Avocado
  • Kale
  • Bell Peppers
  • Basil
  • Lima Beans
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Cauliflower
  • Ginger
  • Lentils
  • Asparagus
  • Cabbage
  • Garlic
  • Tomato
  • Sweet Potato
  • Zucchini
  • Beet Greens
