In the latest episode of The Adventures of V-Man, I, Vinnie, went to Zen Wellness LA to receive chiropractic care and somatic trauma therapy. Millions of people around the world praise chiropractic therapy for its benefits, and I include myself in that category. It’s truly a wonderful care option if you experience poor posture, neck or back pain, or need help recovering from an injury. While I’m very familiar with chiropractic care, I was unaware of somatic trauma therapy. I headed out on my adventure to Zen Wellness LA to experience both therapies.

What Is Zen Wellness LA?

Owned and operated by women, Zen Wellness LA is located in the neighborhood of Silver Lake, Los Angeles, CA. The women at this facility offer a variety of services, including chiropractic care, somatic trauma therapy, prenatal massage, massage therapy, pediatric chiropractic, yoga, and pilates physical therapy. You can also experience infrared sauna, postpartum care, and purchase Usana supplements.

Now, I must confess that do have an existing chiropractic relationship with Dr. Bobbi Jones, one of the chiropractors at Zen Wellness LA. She’s my favorite chiropractor in the city, and I make an appointment with her whenever I’m out of alignment. Needless to say, I was very excited to do an episode of The Adventures of V-Man with her.

The Chiropractic Treatment

When I arrived at Zen Wellness LA, Dr. Jones greeted me and welcomed me into the chiropractic room, after the receptionist took my temperature, of course. They are very safe and have enhanced their safety measures in response to COVID-19. Dr. Jones asked me if I had any pain or sore areas. I was experiencing some tension in my lower back and neck, which is common for me. She actually knows that about me and does wonderful adjustments to address those areas.

I lay face down on the chiropractic table and Dr. Jones felt up and down my spine to identify where I was exactly out of alignment. One of the points of chiropractic care is to help the spine maintain proper alignment. Many people fear this therapy because of the cracks, but let me assure you that Dr. Jones is an experienced professional and knows her way around a spine. I’m addicted to the popping sounds! She started with quick, pressing adjustments in my mid and upper back. She was just getting warmed up, though. Following those adjustments, she made her way to my neck, which made an excellent pop that was audible for even the camera guy. I think I even heard the receptionist in the other room say, “Holy moly.”

I flipped over onto my back and she continued to adjust my neck because different positioning allows for new adjustments to take place. Then Dr. Jones did my favorite adjustment: the lower back adjustment. She instructed me to lay on my side, with my top leg bent and bottom leg extended, close to the edge of the table. People are scared of this adjustment and have a natural tendency to resist it, but trust me when I say that it is magnificent. The relief you feel is immediate and Dr. Jones was able to successfully adjust that area. It made me so happy. I felt taller and more even.

Somatic Trauma Therapy

Once we finished the chiropractic therapy, we went straight into the somatic trauma therapy session. This therapy intends to help people cope or deal with traumatic experiences that happened in the past. As Dr. Jones explained, the beautiful thing about this therapy is that you don’t have to vocalize the trauma. Through questions, guided meditation, gentle massage, and touch, it’s possible for the person to overcome past traumas. In the very least, it helps people say, “I experienced trauma,” without it triggering negative emotions.

I lay on my back and Dr. Jones asked me to think of a traumatic experience or anxious moment I experienced in the past. Once I landed on a memory, she asked me a series of questions, all the while gently massaging my face, chest, shoulders, and arms. Listen, folks, that massage portion was relaxing in and of itself, and that’s a big part of helping the person relax when thinking about that traumatic moment. When I answered her questions, she asked me to repeat my answers while thinking of other positive memories. She had me wiggle my toes, take big inhales, and release the stress through my exhales. It was a very unique experience and it was comforting having her on my side as I journeyed through that traumatic moment in my life.

Once again, she never asked what my experience was because she didn’t need to know it to perform the therapy. If any one of you have trauma that you would like to address without talking about it, this is an amazingly helpful way to overcome that trauma.

I can’t express how thankful I am to Dr. Jones for the healing work she does on a regular basis. She’s truly a special person with great energy. If you are in Los Angeles, CA and are in need of chiropractic care, massage therapy, or somatic trauma therapy, go to see her at Zen Wellness LA. On the last episode of the Dherbs Adventures of V-Man series, our content writer, Vinnie, visited Transformational Healing Universe in West Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Har Hari Khalsa, DC, was gracious enough to give us in depth treatments at his facility. The last article and video covered PEMF therapy and light therapy, but this article and video document three different therapies: chiropractic care, the BioCharger, and laser therapy. What are these futuristic sounding therapies, you ask? Let Vinnie give you the full rundown.

Chiropractic Therapy

Most people know what chiropractic therapy is. Some people agree with it and some people think it’s completely unhealthy for the body. My mother is a chiropractor, so I have a biased opinion and believe that it is completely necessary for keeping the body aligned. The primary reason people don’t like chiropractic therapy is the scary popping sounds that result from adjustments. For me, I love the cracks; I may even venture to say that I love them too much.

Dr. Khalsa is a chiropractor by trade, and he has a very interesting tool that helps pinpoint where adjustments need to be made. It’s a tool that hooks up to a computer. He sat me on a chair and focused on the three areas of my spine separately. He started with my cervical (upper spine), then thoracic (middle spine), and finally the lumbar (lower spine above the sacrum). The tool feels either side of each vertebra and it registers what is out of alignment in the computer. Dr. Khalsa showed me what was out of whack and then quickly pulsed the machine, similar to a percussive massager like the Theragun, on the vertebrae that needed adjusting. In doing so, it completes the adjustment without the forceful motion that chiropractors typically use.

I’m a slave to the cracking sound, so if there’s no “pop,” then I don’t feel like I got adjusted. This type of adjustment, however, is fantastic for people who resist the adjustment or hate the cracking sound. Despite my feelings on the matter, it does complete the adjustment to help align the spine

The BioCharger

When I walked into the room with the BioCharger, I felt like I was walking into the future, despite the fact that the machine looks like a Tesla coil from the past. The BioCharger helps to stimulate the body’s energy to enhance athletic performance in a noninvasive way. Dr. Khalsa explained that many athletes, including professional surfers John John Florence and Kelly Slater, use this treatment to accelerate recovery. The primary purpose of this device is to identify cells in the body that have weak vibrations. The BioCharger emits vibrations and frequencies that activate those weaker cells, helping them act like other active cells in the body.

Catch every episode of the Adventures of V-Man on the Dherbs YouTube page.

The interesting thing about the BioCharger is that you can program it to address a specific ailment or area of the body. For example, if you have arthritis in your knees, then you can help activate the weaker cells in the knee joints. Now, I’m a pretty active person and experience pain from time to time, but I don’t know that this therapy helped me. Perhaps it is the type of therapy that requires multiple sessions, but I can’t say that I felt relief after sitting next to the BioCharger. It was wild and futuristic, but I don’t know if I’d try it again.

Summus Laser Therapy

This sounds pretty awesome, right? Don’t worry, it’s not laser hair removal and no hairs were harmed in the filming of this episode of the Adventures of V-Man. The Summus Medical Laser is a therapeutic instrument that uses laser energy to help reduce inflammation in the body. Dr. Khalsa said that he broke his foot a while back and he was able to decrease the swelling and pain and accelerate the healing process by using this laser every day. The heat helps to promote blood circulation to the area where the laser is directed. The laser uses red and near-infrared wavelengths to penetrate the deep tissues of the body.

Dr. Khalsa asked if I had any problem areas. I told him that I experience occasional ringing in my ears as a result of playing in bands for years. Playing music brings me joy, but also high-pitched frequencies when it’s very quiet. To help provide improved metabolic cell activity and increased circulation to my ears, Dr. Khalsa directed the laser around each ear. It felt very warm, but not uncomfortable by any means. You can only use the laser for a short period of time, otherwise it becomes unhealthy. He spent about three minutes on each ear.

It’s important to note that both the Summus Laser and BioCharger therapies are more beneficial when you continue to use them. These therapies do not provide instantaneous relief; rather, as with many alternative remedies, continued use will bring the most benefits.

The Summus Laser therapy concluded our time with Dr. Khalsa at Transformational Healing Universe. He was incredibly knowledgable, generous with his time, and has some very unique therapies to help people with a variety of ailments. The light therapy and PEMF therapy from the last article were my two favorite therapies because they are quite powerful and pull you out of your own way so you can truly experience the therapy.

Some people are freaked out by the sound of cracking your knuckles and others can’t imagine a day without a crack. Kids become fascinated with the popping sound that happens when you twist your joints, and it can become habitual as they age. It typically starts with finger cracking, and then they learn to bend and twist other joints to get those magical pops.

Most adults preach the doctrine that cracking your knuckles makes you destined to develop arthritis. Contrary to popular belief, there is no definitive link between knuckle cracking and arthritis, or any other medical condition. This rumor is so prevalent because people find that popping sound annoying. Certain studies imply that knuckle cracking may lead to swelling, but no study has proven this direct connection.

Why Do Knuckles Pop?

You don’t have to worry about joints that pop, provided the cracking isn’t followed by immediate pain. Most joints crack because the muscle is tight, causing friction around the bones. The joints pull apart when you crack your knuckles, creating somewhat of a cavity. The cracking noise comes from the formation of that cavity. Gases, primarily carbon dioxide and nitrogen, fill the cavity before reentering the joint. Tendons that rub against joints can also cause the sound. You may notice that the action has to be quick for the pop to be heard. A slow movement typically doesn’t yield a pop.

Is Cracking Your Knuckles Bad For You?

People who crack their knuckles have gotten a bad reputation over the years, but it’s time for knuckle crackers to rejoice because it isn’t bad for you! You may be wondering about the other joints in your body, though. Consider your neck, back, knees, and ankles. If they naturally crack on their own, enjoy the feeling. People who purposefully crack these joints typically do it because they are experiencing pain and trying to provide relief. Forcing the crack can actually over-stretch your ligaments, pull your muscles, or misalign your spine, ultimately restricting mobility.

Cracking your neck or back only provides temporary relief. It is best to seek professional treatment to understand why you are experiencing pain. Try to visit a chiropractor and see what his or her professional opinion is. He or she may be able to help you strengthen and stabilize the area of pain, which may result in you cracking your body less. You may also benefit from stretching or gentle yoga poses.

While you probably shouldn’t crack every joint every hour of the day, cracking your knuckles isn’t hurting anyone, except for the people around you. Remember: if it hurts, you may want to see a professional.

Ear infections occur when there is a viral or bacterial infection in the middle ear, which is directly behind the eardrum. The middle ear can become inflamed or fluid can build up in there, which is typically why ear infections are painful. People can either develop chronic or acute ear infections. The former typically does not clear up or it is recurring (sometimes causing permanent damage to middle and inner ear), while the latter is painful for a short period of time.

What Causes An Ear Infection?

An ear infection is the result of the Eustachian tubes becoming swollen or blocked. This causes fluid to build up in the middle ear. Eustachian tubes run from each ear directly to the back of the throat. There are several factors that can cause blockage in the Eustachian tubes, the most common of which are listed below.

 • Colds
 • Excess mucus build-up
 • Smoking
 • Allergies
 • Sinus infections
 • Infected or swollen adenoids (tissue near your tonsils)
 • Air pressure changes
 • Pacifier use
 • Climate changes

Natural Remedies

Garlic In Your Ear

This may sound a little odd, but putting a few drops of garlic oil (or an entire garlic clove) in your ear is a great natural remedy. Garlic has amazing healing properties, the primary ones being antibacterial and anti-viral. The compounds in garlic help to attack the bacteria or virus in the inner ear, while the antiseptic properties of garlic work to inhibit the infection from spreading. Make sure your eardrum is not busted when you do this.

Probiotics

When you have an ear infection, a great way to naturally remedy the situation is to boost your immune system. Probiotics are often included as alternative treatments and have been effective in helping pediatric ear infections. Probiotics are easily absorbed by the body and strengthen the immune system. The best probiotics to consume are kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and fermented vegetables.

Chiropractic Treatment

Several studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between receiving chiropractic adjustments and resolving ear infections. It is possible that ear infections can be caused by misalignment of the upper neck. Chiropractic adjustments can help to align the vertebrae, relaxing the muscles around the Eustachian tubes, which allows proper fluid drainage.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Ear infections are occasionally caused by fungus in the ear. If this is the case, raw apple cider vinegar can be a great solution. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with one part filtered water and soak a cotton ball in this mixture. Plug your ear with the cotton ball and leave it in for about five minutes. After removing the cotton ball, lay on your opposite side to allow the liquid to drain from the ear. You can use a hair dryer to dry your ear after draining.

Saline Wash

Clogged sinuses can cause ear infections, so it is optimal to relieve sinus pressure if this is the case. A great way to relieve sinus pressure is to use a saline wash with a Neti Pot. Relieving pressure in the sinus area allows for healthy drainage, which is crucial if you have an ear infection.

]]>

Fibromyalgia syndrome is not a disease, rather it is a musculoskeletal condition that can involve a multitude of symptoms. It is commonly thought to be arthritis-related, but fibromyalgia does not cause joint damage or inflammation like arthritis. People with fibromyalgia often experience unexplained muscle pain or painful trigger points that include the back of the head, tops of shoulders, upper chest, knees, outer elbows, or hips.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

Experts believe that fibromyalgia isn’t caused by one thing in particular; rather, the syndrome is due to a combination of factors. Traumatic, stressful, or emotional events can be linked to the development of fibromyalgia. Additionally, people with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or spinal arthritis have a greater risk of developing fibromyalgia. Other factors, which are believed to contribute to the syndrome, are listed below.

 • Repetitive Injuries
 • Traumatic, Stressful, or Emotional Events (e.g. PTSD or a car accident)
 • Genetics (a family history of Fibromyalgia can make you more prone to it)
 • Infections or Illnesses (Lupus)
 • CNS (central nervous system) problems
 • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Get Your Yoga On

Yoga has been shown to relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia. Taking a 60-75 minute yoga class twice a week, for a total of eight weeks, can help decrease pain in people who have fibromyalgia. Since yoga is a calming exercise, it lowers cortisol, which is a stress hormone. Other stress-lowering workouts include tai chi, Pilates, and swimming.

Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Eat foods with anti-inflammatory properties because inflammation causes joint and muscle pain. Green tea, ginger, broccoli, red onion, and tomato, among other fruits and vegetables, can help naturally reduce inflammation. Additionally, you may want to eliminate meat, dairy, processed foods, junk food, salt, sugar, and gluten from you diet. Gluten can cause inflammation, weight gain, neurological problems, muscle pain, and fatigue. Try a gluten-free and raw foods diet to help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia.

You Need Magnesium & Vitamin D

Eating foods that are high in vitamin D and magnesium can help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia. Proper magnesium levels help reduce stress and vitamin D can ease muscle pain and stiffness. Avocados, bananas, kale, collards, cashews, pine nuts, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, spinach, and almonds are great sources of magnesium. Mushrooms, freshly squeezed orange juice, and almond milk (free of thickeners and sweeteners) are great sources of vitamin D.

Try Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an age-old alternative treatment for chronic pain. This ancient Chinese method helps ease pain by pricking the skin with needles at certain points of the body. It is best to continually receive acupuncture to help relieve pain, because a one-off treatment may only have short-term effects.

Chiropractic Therapy

Chiropractic treatment is another alternative treatment that can help correct past injuries or damages from serious traumas. Chiropractic care helps realign the spine through adjustments. People with fibromyalgia have been known to have hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, and cervical spinal adjustments have helped to decrease this hyperactivity.

Being medically technical, the neck is a constricted section, such as the part of the body that connects the head with the trunk. Other such constrictions are the neck of the humerus and the neck of the femur.

Neck pain can be very distressing and disturbing. But no matter what the cause of the neck pain, unequivocally there’s a metaphysical causation at play. Energy is always at the root of our problems including injuries and diseases.

Causes and Risk Factors

Neck pain can result from a host of things, situations, and scenarios:

 • injuries (perhaps an automobile collision, a concussion)
 • sleeping awkwardly over night
 • holding the phone to your shoulders too much
 • lifting weights (doing squats with the bar on your neck)
 • stress
 • poor posture

Healing Neck Pain Naturally

Terminate all situations in your life that you consider to be a pain in your neck. Learn to work mental science. All you need is knowledge and time to do so.

Get your neck massaged up to three times a week. Massage (especially deep tissue) is very therapeutic.

Neck exercises (like head rolls) can be helpful if they don’t exacerbate the pain. Head rolls (commonly performed during yoga) also release pent up stress and tension.

Acupuncture and acupressure may serve very helpful in elimination of neck pain.

Applying a hot pack and/or cold pack may also serve as very therapeutic for neck pain.

Without a doubt, chiropractic work is highly recommended. People should see a chiropractic simply for health purposes and not just for some medical remedy. If your neck (and/or shoulder pain is chronic), I highly suggest you visit a chiropractor.

Magnet therapy will greatly help neck pain. Wear moderately powerful magnets on the neck (mostly in the daytime). Always apply the side of the magnet that denotes the North side to the skin as the North side of a magnet is healing and the South side is stimulating.

In cases of neck pain, you would not want to stimulate the pain, but eliminate it altogether. Search the Inter-net and search for magnetic neck braces. The more powerful the magnet (i.e. higher the gauss), the better!

When sleeping, make sure your head is resting on a memory foam pillow (if you sleep with a pillow), like an Ortho Mattress-produced or Select Comfort-produced pillow. These are really therapeutic. I own two of them myself. They may cost around $75 to $100 but are totally worth the cost. Take it from me!

Good essential oils than can be rubbed or massaged into the neck include: Cinnamon Leaf (never use cinnamon bark oil on the body), Peppermint, Wintergreen, Spearmint, and Lavender oil. Always apply a carrier oil to the skin before applying essential oils. Good carrier oils include olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, etc.
