Sometimes, you just need a little heat to complement your sweet, or a little zest to impress. In case you are not familiar with seasoning your fruit, let this recipe be your entry point. Let us first explain that there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the refreshing flavors of fresh produce. Eating a juicy peach on a hot summer day is magical, as is enjoying a crisp apple in the middle of fall. Every now and again, though, you can elevate your fruit with just a touch of citrus and spice.

A lot of cultures salt their melons and add a squeeze of lemon or lime to bring out the flavor. This is a popular serving method for cantaloupe in Italy. For this chili lime watermelon snack, though, we get inspiration from Mexico, where putting chili powder, salt, lime, and other seasonings on fruit is very popular. It’s an ingenious hack that takes fruit, or vegetables, to a new level. Talk about adding a little pep to your step! Something about the spicy sweet flavor combination with a kiss of zesty lime makes you wanna get moving!

The great thing about watermelon is that it pairs beautifully with myriad flavors. You can add it to salsas, salads, and desserts. You can even grill it for a savory summer appetizer. This chili lime watermelon is just another way to be creative with one of summer’s most popular fruits. Plus, this recipe is much healthier than adding an overly salty, processed syrup to your fruit. Always go the healthier route if possible!

We aren’t sure how much you use spice blends, but if you are like most people, chances are you go through them quickly. Maybe you get the crazy idea to try your hand at making your own spice blends for a change! Once you do that and realize the difference in flavor, you may never go back to store bought blends. Such is the case for this homemade chili seasoning, which is free of preservatives and additives.

Chili seasoning is not solely reserved for your favorite batch of chili; rather you can add it to salad dressings or other dishes. You most likely have the spices you need to make this chili seasoning in your spice cabinet or drawer. If ever you need to make more, you can buy more individual spices and create the spice blend. The great thing about that is that you will avoid the harmful ingredients, especially excess amounts of sodium, found in pre-mixed seasonings and packets.

A chili seasoning packet seems convenient, but not in regards to your health. In stores, a pre-mixed packet of chili seasoning can contain anti-caking agents and artificial flavors. In reality, chili seasoning typically consists of five to eight spices. Those spices usually include chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, and a few others. You can always customize the ingredients to tailor the flavor to your liking. And as a final note, chili powder is not the same as chili seasoning. That’s that!

How can you make fresh fruit more delicious? Put some chili powder on it and experience flavor like never before. Trust us when we tell you that the spice complements the sweetness of each fruit in this fruit salad. If you live in a place where fruit carts are on various streets and street corners, you know how special the spicy sweet fruit assembly is. If you don’t have access to such a fruit cart, get ready for this fruit salad to blow your taste buds away.

The beautiful thing about this spicy fruit salad is that it requires less than 10 ingredients and just 15 minutes of your time. Once you cut up the fruit, which can take a while or no time at all (depending on your knife skills), you combine them with the other ingredients. The chili powder gives just a subtle kick, so as not to overpower the natural fruit flavor. Plus, you get a little extra sweetness from the raw agave nectar. The fresh lime juice helps to wake up the natural sugars in the fruit, giving you a great balance of tart, spicy, and sweet.

This fruit salad is meant for warmer days, making the spring and summer months the best times to enjoy this recipe. Additionally, you can customize the ingredients and use what is available based on the season. For example, you can use melons or stone fruit in the summer when they are in season. Whenever possible, shop seasonally for optimum flavor and freshness. We hope you enjoy the recipe!

If you are new to jicama, this recipe is the perfect way to enjoy this root vegetable, which is commonly treated like a fruit. Peel and cut the jicama into sticks and drizzle the sweet and spicy concoction over them. Allow the sticks to marinate for 10 minutes before serving. This recipe will surely become a family favorite, especially if you are looking to enjoy healthier snacks. No preservatives, no dyes, no artificial sweeteners, and no refined grains, just sweet and spicy deliciousness.

The jicama is a root vegetable that has thick, brown skin and crispy white flesh. It has a similar texture to an Asian pear or apple, but the flavor is quite mild. That’s why a lot of people jazz it up with with a sweet and spicy sauce known as Chamoy. You’ll commonly see this vibrantly red sauce at fruit carts, but it is very unhealthy for you, exhibiting nearly 850 milligrams of sodium per serving. Not to mention, seasoning the jicama with tajin only adds to the sodium content.

Fortunately for you, these jicama sticks are not coated in sodium-rich, nearly-fluorescent ingredients. Whisk together some raw agave nectar, freshly squeezed lime juice, chili powder, and sea salt before drizzling the mixture over the jicama. This recipe lasts for about three days, provided you store the jicama in an airtight container in the fridge. If you want to prep it for an entire week, keep the dressing and jicama sticks separate, only tossing the sticks in sauce when you want to enjoy them.

What do you love about tacos? All of the flavor tends to come from the seasonings on the meat. Well, you can use the same seasonings that impart those smoky, robust, and signature taco flare on a raw vegan diet. Cumin, chili powder, paprika, sea salt, and garlic can all be enjoyed while cleansing. But what about the meat? While you cannot have meat, you can pulse walnuts and packaged sun-dried tomatoes with the spices to achieve a ground beef-like texture.

The taco “meat” that you end up with is slightly chunky and incredibly hearty. For the sun-dried tomatoes, make sure to buy the packaged variety, not the ones sold in oil. The acidity from the sun-dried tomato can be a little intense, but the avocado, chopped tomatoes, cilantro, and lettuce leaf help counteract the salt. In fact, the romaine lettuce leaf, which acts as the tortilla in this recipe, offers a refreshing crunch. Hit the taco with a squeeze of fresh lime and you’ll be transported to your favorite taco stand.

If you enjoy the walnut taco “meat” in this recipe, you can use it in other creations. Save some and place a dollop or two on a salad during the cleanse. You can also pulse some cauliflower in a food processor to achieve cauliflower rice and mix in the taco “meat” with it. You’ll have your very own raw vegan burrito bowl, which you can top with tomatoes, avocado, onion, and cilantro. The possibilities are truly endless!

If you’ve been following our recipes for a while, you know how much we love a tasty tahini dressing or sauce. Tahini is a nutty ingredient that you can enjoy during your cleanse, so long as the sesame seeds are not roasted. Tahini makes for a great base for any sauce or dressing, and it also provides a nutty flavor.

You need to spice up tahini, though, as it can be pasty and slightly boring on its own. This sauce has a little kick from the chili powder and beautiful, fresh acidity from the lime juice. Plus, you can always take the spice level up a notch by adding a dash or two of cayenne. That is completely up to you and your ability to handle spice, though. The paprika helps to round out the flavor, contributing a somewhat smoky flavor to this sauce.

The great thing about this recipe is that you can enjoy it as a sauce, dip, or dressing. Drizzling this over your salad will give it a southwest vibe. Just remember that you cannot include corn, beans, or tortilla strips in your salad if you are cleansing. If you want to enjoy so after cleansing, please do so, but just keep your sodium intake in mind in regards to those foods. Lastly, enjoy this as a dip for raw veggies or pour it over some raw tacos to give them a creamy, spicy flare.

It makes sense that National Chili Day is the fourth Thursday in February because it is the perfect time of year to enjoy a warm bowl of chili. Some people like it hot, others like it mild, and there are the select few that like to put chili inside ice cream (they’re weird…we know). While there are various chili seasoning packets, which are high in sodium and other added flavorings, we encourage you to make your own chili spice blend!

Chili has many roots in different cultures, which is why there are many variations of this classic cook-off dish. For instance, a lot of Southwestern chili recipes will use green chilies for a little kick. Here’s an interesting fact: one green chili contains as much vitamin C as six oranges!

Chili Fact: If you make your chili extra spicy with hot peppers, it actually helps to increase the speed of your metabolism by triggering a thermodynamic burn.

Chili Powder

The active ingredient in chili powder is capsaicin, which helps to boost the metabolism and burn fat. Despite the fact that many people associate chili powder with an upset stomach, it has been known to inhibit acid reflux and kill bacteria, which cause stomach ulcers. Chili powder also has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which help to increase blood flow and decrease swelling in stiff/sore joints.

To help you celebrate National Chili Day, we have three of our favorite chili recipes below. Let us know what you think if you make them!

Roasted Sweet Potato Vegan Chili

The subtle sweetness of the potatoes is the perfect balance to the array of vibrant spices that go into this chili. Then the roasted heat from the poblano hits your palate and you wonder, “Where has this been all my life?” Well, it’s here now and here to stay.

A Vegan Chili That Will Boost Your Chili Game

This recipe boasts bold flavors that continue to entice your taste buds with every bite. Don’t be afraid to add whatever toppings you feel would go well with the chili. Cilantro is a great go-to option!

We bet you didn’t think that chili was possible to eat on a raw foods diet. Well, eat it to believe it. It has robust flavors!
