More and more studies continue to find that plant-based diets may reduce the risk of chronic health conditions. A recent study collected data from over 20 years and found that vegans and vegetarians may have a lower risk of developing heart disease and cancer. Plant-based eaters may also have lower odds of developing risk factors, such as high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol, which contribute to these health problems. 

What Did The Study Examine?

Researchers examined results from over 48 reviews published over the course of two decades. These results explored the health benefits of vegan or vegetarian diets. For clarification, a vegan diet excludes all forms of meat, eggs, dairy, and all other animal products, including honey and gelatin. A vegetarian diet is the same, but allows for the consumption of dairy and eggs. 

Researchers observed a lower risk of developing certain cancers and ischemic heart disease for both vegan and vegetarian diets. Ischemic heart disease occurs when the person experiences restricted blood flow because of narrowed or hardened arteries. Researchers also found that plant-based diets reduced the risk of prostate cancer and certain gastrointestinal cancers. Additionally, researchers linked vegetarian diets to a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease. 

Don’t be mistaken, though, it is possible for vegans and vegetarians to be unhealthy. They can eat plant-based meats, French fries, and pasta with little to no fruit and vegetable intake. For the research, vegan and vegetarian diets included many plant-based foods that contributed to overall better health. Plus, people who adhere to plant-based diets tend to consume higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and other substances with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. Because they don’t consume meat and animal-based foods, they don’t suffer the pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory effects.

The Study Examined Strict Vegan And Vegetarian Diets Only

The reviews that researchers examined only included people who followed strict vegetarian or vegan diets. The study didn’t include people who eat plant-based just some of the time. Similarly, that’s how researchers looked at all forms of animal protein, making it difficult to determine whether avoiding specific animal-based foods, such as poultry, fish, or red meat, could have health benefits.

The purpose of the study was not to prove whether or how a vegan or vegetarian diet could improve overall health and longevity. Because each of the reviews and smaller studies included the measured health benefits of plant-based diets differently, study authors could not properly calculate how much plant-based diets could reduce the odds of developing cancer, heart disease, or risk factors that contribute to these conditions. 

As we stated earlier, not all vegetarian or vegan diets are equally nutritious. Some of these diets emphasize the importance of unhealthy plant foods. Bottled, sugary fruit juices, potato chips, refined grains, and even sodas can be vegan or vegetarian and have detrimental effects on overall health. 

Focus On Fiber-Rich Foods

Eating a lot of plant-based whole foods may reduce the risk of chronic diseases because many of these foods contain a lot of fiber. Animal-based foods do not contain fiber, according to health experts. By eating fiber-rich foods, you can slow digestion and prevent blood sugar spikes or crashes. Fiber also helps people feel fuller for longer, which can help people eat a little less over time, which may help prevent weight gain. Additionally, fiber works to clean out the digestive tract and higher fiber intake has been linked to lower cholesterol levels

All of fiber’s positive effects may help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. Avoiding meat is also helpful in your effort to avoid these major health conditions. The reason is because meat contains saturated fat, which increases the risk of high cholesterol and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries that contributes to heart disease). That means that vegans and vegetarians not only reap the benefits of fiber and plant-based nutrients, but they also avoid problematic things that may worsen their health. Finally, health experts recommend that if you plan to make the plant-based switch, it is better to first eliminate red meat and processed meats (hot dogs, deli meat, etc.) from your diet due to the saturated fat and sodium content.

According to clinical trial data, a new blood test has proven to be quite accurate in the early detection of colorectal cancer in most cases. Colorectal cancer is often deadly, but screening for it can be inconvenient. Getting more adults to go in for screenings is a top priority to help prevent higher rates of this cancer. Health experts believe that this novel test may help people regularly screen for colorectal cancer.

What Is This Novel Blood Test?

Colorectal cancer screening has a reputation for being difficult, but this new test may be as easy as giving blood. In fact, you may even be able to do the test during your regular check up, but there are some caveats, despite the test’s efficacy. According to a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the cell-free DNA (cfDNA) was able to detect colorectal cancer in 83% of participants with the disease. That detection rate is similar to a pre-existing at-home screening test that is widely used. This test is a fecal immunochemical (FIT) test, which has a 80% detection rate. 

Health experts concur that colonoscopies remain the best way to detect and prevent colorectal cancer. The reason for this is because they can accurately identify colorectal cancer in about 95% of cases. The problem is that they require significantly more time, scheduling, and preparation. Health experts note that the combination of accuracy and accessibility could change the game for colorectal cancer screening, which is very exciting. 

Early detection with tests like these can help move the needle forward in confirming their validity. Although this novel cfDNA blood test is not perfect, it is a big step forward in the world of early colorectal cancer detection.

83% Accuracy Is Great

Just to be clear, the cfDNA test does not prevent cancer; rather, it works by detecting small DNA fragments in the blood that may come from cancerous tissue or tumors. Experts think that this is one of the first tests that uses a combination of mutations and epigenetic marks of DNA to detect cancer. 

The results of the study in The New England Journal of Medicine came from ECLIPSE, a large, multi-center trial. The trial consisted of 8,000 patients between the ages of 45 and 84. Study authors note that the participants were at an average risk for colorectal cancer and were already undergoing routine screenings. The new test, however, does not test for precancerous lesions or polyps, which can develop into cancer. Unfortunately, the test only detected precancerous lesions in 13% of cases.

Only Two-Thirds Of Americans Get Cancer Screenings

Despite how deadly colorectal cancer is (it’s the second-leading cause of all cancer-related deaths), most adults do not get the recommended screenings. In fact, less than 60% of adults between the ages of 45 and 75 receive screenings. Health experts estimate that these screenings could prevent about 35,000 deaths annually due to colorectal cancer. 

As stated earlier, colonoscopies are highly accurate at detecting precancerous lesions and colorectal cancer. That said, most people ignore them because of the hassle. Nobody wants to go through the whole process of drinking the special solution to fully eliminate the day before the test. A blood test, however, is much more appealing, despite the fact that it is slightly less accurate. Getting more people to regularly screen for colorectal cancer could be a net positive. 

The bottom line is that this new blood test is able to detect colorectal cancer in about 83% of cases. Because it is one of the most deadly forms of cancer, early detection is key. Not enough adults screen for this cancer, so the hope with this test is that more adults decide to screen for the cancer on a regular basis.

Scientists report that the blood’s normal pH range rests between 7.35 and 7.45, making it slightly alkaline. Do Cancer Cells Thrive In An Acidic Environment?

That occurs when acidic conditions in the body shut down the production of proteins in those cells. By disrupting their metabolic activity and circadian clocks, you essentially force the cells into dormancy. The unfortunate reality is that cellular dormancy can lead to drug resistance and cancer recurrence, so it is problematic. 

Some researchers believe that you can reverse this dormancy by counteracting acidity and resulting effects on cancer cells. That has actually led some people to wonder if the alkaline diet or baking soda can help prevent, or even treat, cancer. Based on the available information and research studies surrounding pH levels and cancer, it is unlikely for a couple primary reasons. 

To date, studies involved cancer cells in a lab and didn’t account for the complex or unpredictable behavior of tumors in the human body. Secondly, as stated earlier in the article, you cannot eat enough alkaline foods or beverages to alter the pH level of the blood. That is because the kidneys and other organs work round the clock to keep blood pH levels in a specific range. 

Do Acidic Foods Cause Cancer?

There is some research that shows that cancer cells are more likely to grow in acidic environments. Unfortunately, no evidence-based research indicates a link between the alkaline diet and reduced cancer risk. That said, what you eat is integral to optimal health and cancer prevention. There are plant-based superfoods that offer antioxidants and other nutrients that may enhance overall health and reduce the risk of cancer. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends a diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and lean proteins for better overall health. 

The scientific community supports eating alkaline foods for a separate reason: to improve digestive health. Less acidic foods are easier on the stomach and better tolerated if you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you experience acid reflux on a regular basis, consider eliminating acidic foods and focus on consuming alkaline foods.
