People have an idea of which recipes tahini belongs to. Believe it or not, tahini is not solely reserved for dressings, hummus, and other dips or sauces. Tahini has a place in desserts, providing an earthy nuttiness that complements sweeter ingredients, such as dates, maple syrup, or agave. Some people regularly make tahini fudge! When you mix tahini with dates, however, you get an incredibly nourishing, filling treat. That ingredient combination is almost like a raw vegan version of salted caramel. Plus, that duo provides lots of fiber, potassium, and magnesium, all of which help the body function optimally.

One of the reasons why you’ll love this recipe is because of its simplicity. It comes together in a matter of minutes and it’s packed with natural sweetness. You get a hint of bitterness from the raw cacao powder, in addition to a surprising amount of nutrition. Just one tablespoon of raw cacao powder contains the following nutritional profile:

  • 2 grams (g) of fat
  • 29 calories
  • 1 g of protein
  • 2 g carbohydrates
  • 11% of the daily value (DV) of fiber
  • 5% of the DV of vitamin D
  • 5% of the DV of potassium
  • 1% of the DV of iron
  • 1% of the DV of calcium

For the dates, we recommend that you go with Medjool dates, as they are generally bigger and have more of a caramel-like texture and flavor. They can be harder to find, depending on where you are, so you can replace them with regular dates if you cannot locate Medjools. If you cannot find Medjool dates, use two regular dates for every one Medjool date. Finally, if the dates are not soft, you can soak them in warm water for about 10 minutes before blending. Just make sure to discard the soaking liquid.

Yes, it is that time of the year when we get to welcome all things pumpkin. Although we don’t encourage flocking to coffee shops to indulge in overly sweet and fattening pumpkin spice lattes, we do welcome healthier pumpkin recipes. We prefer the pumpkin recipes, like this overnight oat one, that provide fiber, protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and a diverse mix of vitamins and minerals. And that is truly what we aim to provide you on this website, whether you are cleansing or trying to adopt healthier eating habits.

These pumpkin pie overnight oats contain pure pumpkin puree. Now, it is very important that you purchase that and not canned pumpkin pie mix. The former is 100% pure pumpkin, while the latter is calorically dense, rich in sodium, and high in sugar. Pure pumpkin puree contains fiber, protein, lots and lots of vitamin A, potassium, vitamin C, iron, and a small amount of calcium. Although the pumpkin puree helps flavor and color these overnight oats, let’s not forget about the oats. For vegans, oats are great sources of protein, fiber, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. They help keep you full and sustain energy until your next meal!

And because we love nutrition so much, we could not exclude chia seeds from the recipe. Chia seeds are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. They also contain vitamins B1 & B3, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, calcium, zinc, and several antioxidants, including quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin, caffeic acid, and chlorogenic acid. These antioxidants can help protect your cells from damaging free radicals, which contribute to aging and several diseases, including cancer.

A happy life is a healthy life. Feeding your body foods that provide optimal nourishment to encourage the optimal function of all systems and organs is truly a gift. When you eat the right foods, you feel a whole lot better. That doesn’t mean you cannot cheat a little here and there and indulge in some unhealthy options. If you find that you have been eating a little unhealthier, though, switch it up and make yourself a refreshing raw salad like this kale cranberry almond salad. It contains fiber, protein, magnesium, vitamin C, antioxidants, and other beneficial vitamins and minerals.

Kale is a superfood, but it’s not the only ingredient that brings a super nutritional profile to this salad. As the other leafy green base, you have romaine lettuce, which is an excellent source of vitamin K, folate, beta-carotene, vitamin C, calcium, and potassium. The avocado also provides magnesium and potassium, in addition to healthy fats, folate, fiber, and more. Along with their low sodium levels, avocados do not contain any cholesterol, making them great heart-healthy foods.

When you enjoy this kale salad, not only will you feel good about yourself, but you’ll also get to enjoy varying textures and flavors. Although the kale can be slightly bitter, you don’t taste it because the dried cranberries offer sweetness and almonds provide nuttiness. Avocados don’t offer specific flavor, but they do offer a textural difference from all the crunch in this salad. Finally, you get the zesty dressing that also provides some creaminess, thanks to the tahini.

A smoothie without a banana? Believe it or not, you don’t have to include banana in every smoothie you make. Yes, bananas offer sweetness and can help your smoothie achieve a smoother, creamier texture, but they aren’t always necessary. That is especially true if you are trying to watch your sugar intake. You can usually achieve the same creamy consistency by using avocado instead of bananas. This smoothie doesn’t have either of those creamy ingredients, but it does fulfill 273% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C, 62% of calcium, and 273% of vitamin A.

This green smoothie tastes of kale, but not overwhelmingly to the point where it tastes like lawn clippings. The sweetness of the apple and bright lemon juice work well to tone it down. Without the banana, the flavor of the apple really comes through. Plus, the addition of the almond butter adds a nutty, fatty component that takes your focus off the slightly bitter kale flavor. Just make sure that you remove the thick kale stems, or you’ll be enjoying a kale apple smoothie that really tastes like bitter kale.

To make this smoothie, simply add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. The homemade almond milk will do a great job at creating a creamier consistency. It also builds on the nuttiness of the almond butter and does a better job than water at distracting from the kale flavor. We hope you love it!

Do you want to feel unstoppable after your workouts? Do you want to maintain balanced electrolyte levels in the intense summer heat? Well, then you need this homemade watermelon electrolyte drink! Unlike store bought electrolyte drinks, this recipe does not contain an unnecessary amount of added sugars, dyes, artificial flavors, and preservatives. This is a much healthier alternative to a classic sports drink, and it puts a little pep in your step every time you drink it.

Watermelon is one of the favorite fruits of summer. Not only is it fruity, refreshing, hydrating, and delicious, but it is also a great source of electrolytes. Watermelon is mostly water, but it contains magnesium, potassium, and a small amount of sodium as well. These electrolytes can aid with muscle function, hydration, and balancing the body’s fluid levels. Additionally, watermelon contains vitamins A & C and lycopene, which is a antioxidant that benefits heart function.

Although watermelon colors this electrolyte drink a beautiful pinkish-red, it is not the only electrolyte-rich ingredient. Lemons provide lots of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and help detox the liver, balance pH levels, and boost immune function. Finally, sea salt provide sodium, which is one of the electrolytes that you quickly lose via sweat. Ingesting salt is the easiest way to replenish what you lose. Just make sure that you go for sea salt over table salt because it is less processed.

The post 4 Health Benefits Of Lemons appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Are you friends with a neighbor just because they have a gorgeous lemon tree that produces so many lemons? We wouldn’t blame you if that’s your situation. Lemons, or citrus fruits in general, hold that much power. They contain a lot of vitamin C and other antioxidants that support various aspects of health. Take the trend of drinking lemon water, for example, which may help support digestion, detoxification, and reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Lemons are known for their wonderfully acidic juice, but they actually help to alkalize the body, despite that tart flavor. In its natural state, lemon juice is acidic with a pH of about 2. Once it is metabolized in the body, however, it becomes alkaline with a pH level well over 7. And the great thing about lemons is that you can have them year-round in many parts of the world. This depends on the trees’s geographical location and how long the harvesting season is (about a few months).

Nearly all lemons sold in North America are Lisbon or Eureka. These are classic, small- to medium-sized, bright yellow lemons that have a slightly tangy flavor. Meyer lemons, which are sometimes available in specialty markets in the winter, have a darker peel and sweeter, floral juice and flesh. Continue reading to learn more about the health benefits of lemons.

They Support Heart Health

Due to their vitamin C and antioxidant profile, lemons help protect your cells from damaging free radicals. These unstable particles can damage your cells if you don’t neutralize them. By fighting free radical damage, you ultimately work to prevent atherosclerosis, a condition that’s characterized by plaque buildup in the arteries and can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The phenolic compounds in lemons work to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and support endothelial function. For reference, endothelial function is how easily blood flows throughout the body. Reduced endothelial function can increase your risk of heart disease. A 2017 study found that higher fruit and vegetable intake reduced the risk of cancer, all-cause mortality, and cardiovascular disease. So eat your lemons!

They Help Prevent Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits composed of minerals that build up in the urinary tract and form in the kidneys. Passing a kidney stone can be a very painful experience, affecting about 10% of people. If you increase levels of urine citrate, a weak acid, and make urine more alkaline, you may help prevent kidney stones

Lemons contain a form of citric acid that works to increase urine citrate levels. The citric acid binds with urinary calcium in order to prevent oversaturated urine. It also binds to clumps of calcium oxalate crystals to help prevent them from growing and turning into kidney stones. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that consuming four ounces of lemon juice mixed with water per day may help reduce the risk of kidney stones.

They Prevent Cell Damage

As mentioned earlier in this article, lemons are naturally rich in antioxidants, which work to fight free radical damage. The research states that citrus fruits contain a wide array of antioxidants, but newer research indicates that the peels of citrus fruits contain higher amounts of antioxidants. When you fight free radical damage with these unique antioxidants, you help prevent cell damage, which ultimately reduces your risk of chronic kidney disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is technically a group of chronic, progressive lung diseases that limit airflow to the lungs, which makes it difficult to breathe.

They Enhance Iron Absorption

Iron is a mineral that you need for optimal growth and development. The body uses iron to make hemoglobin, which is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of your body. Lemons contain a minuscule amount of iron, but they can enhance iron absorption because they are rich in vitamin C. One lemon contains over 30% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body better absorb nonheme iron, which is found in plant-based and iron-fortified foods. Pairing your iron foods with vitamin C helps you absorb iron even more efficiently.

Nobody wants to look at a picture of themselves and see a whole lot of yellowing their smile. At the same time, harsh whitening strips can irritate the gums and teeth, especially if you are more sensitive to those strips. You don’t have to carefully place whitening strips on your teeth now that you have this homemade toothpaste recipe that helps to whiten teeth. It contains activated charcoal, which is mildly abrasive and helps get you a brighter smile.

Avoid Harsh Teeth Whitening

If you want a gorgeous smile that’ll stand the test of time in family photos, chemical whiteners may not be your best bet. According to research, chemical whitening strips may cause gum irritation, tooth sensitivity, or permanent enamel damage. What’s even more interesting is that scientists don’t quite know how these strips work exactly, or the effects they have in the long run.

At-home whitening treatments tend to contain hydrogen peroxide, which helps remove stains or general discoloration. Hydrogen peroxide can be beneficial in certain situations, but it may not be the best ingredient for oral care. Hydrogen peroxide bleaching agents damage dentin, the tooth layer underneath enamel. If you have weaker teeth, you have a greater risk of developing tooth decay. Even though you see a product in stores, that doesn’t mean it is good for your health.

Whitening Teeth The Natural Way

There are many excellent toothpaste recipes that contain natural ingredients. Some companies offer great options in stores, but they can be quite expensive. If you are on a homemade kick and want to add more DIY recipes to your collection, this toothpaste is a great option. This whitening toothpaste contains beneficial ingredients and stays the same consistency at any temperature. The reason for that is because this recipe does not contain coconut oil, a popular ingredient in DIY oral care recipes. It contains MCT oil, which is derived from coconut oil, but stays liquid at different temperatures.

This natural toothpaste is not as sweet as the conventional toothpastes you’re familiar with, nor does it foam. It doesn’t contain baking soda, so it won’t be salty like other natural options. This recipe contains a small amount of essential oils for flavoring.

Essential Oils In Toothpaste

For the record, not every essential oil is safe to put in your mouth. Some are safe for adults and not for children. The quantity of the oil(s) you choose also plays a role. Cinnamon or peppermint essential oils are irritating and you should use these options sparingly, especially when compared to orange essential oil. Essential oils are completely optional for this homemade whitening toothpaste, but they can make it taste better. You may want to use grapefruit or lemon essential oil.

Before we get to the recipe, we must discuss activated charcoal. It is a great ingredient for whitening teeth because it helps remove surface stains. Incorporating it into a recipe is much better for your teeth because it isn’t as harsh as using it with water alone. Activated charcoal also helps to improve the pH level of your mouth, making it more alkaline to protect against cavities and gingivitis

Homemade Natural Whitening Toothpaste

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup calcium carbonate powder
  • 3 tablespoons xylitol powder
  • 1/4 cup MCT oil
  • 2 teaspoons activated charcoal powder
  • 20 drops essential oil of choice (optional and see above information)

Instructions:

  • Before you begin, make sure that the xylitol powder is finely ground and not coarse. If necessary, add it to a coffee grinder and blitz until very fine.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or squeeze tube and use as needed when you brush your teeth.
  • Store in a cool area and do not allow water to get into the jar or tube of toothpaste.

The post The Impressive Health Benefits Of Collard Greens appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Collard greens often have a negative reputation because they aren’t always prepared in the healthiest way. A lot of preparations involve bacon, ham hocks, turkey legs, and a lot of salt, and the greens are cooked down to a point where they have a lot less nutritional value. In truth, collard greens are very healthy, incredibly versatile, and exhibit some seriously impressive health benefits.

What Are Collard Greens?

Kids may not be the biggest fans of collard greens, but these nutritious leafy greens should be on your grocery list. Collards belong to the cruciferous vegetable family, which includes broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and bok choy. Just like other cruciferous vegetables, collards contain sulforaphane, which is a compound that helps to fight inflammation, balance hormones, and fight free radicals. Continue reading to learn more about the health benefits of collard greens

They Contain A Lot Of Nutrients

Collards are nutrient-dense greens that contain a lot of vitamin A, with one cup providing over 300% of the recommended daily intake (RDI). They also provide B vitamins (particularly folate) and vitamin C, with one cup providing 50% of the RDI. Folate is the naturally occurring form of folic acid, and a cup of collards provides about 44% of the RDI of folate. Just like kale or Swiss chard, collard greens are an excellent source of vitamin K1, providing an impressive 1,045% of the RDI in one cup. Collards also offer other nutrients, including manganese, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium.

They Exhibit Anti-Cancer Activity

As previously mentioned, collards provide a lot of vitamin A and vitamin C, both of which encourage a healthy immune system. Optimal immune response is essential for protecting the body foreign invaders and cancer. Research shows that collard greens contain glucosinolates and sulforaphane, both of which are subjects of cancer research. Scientists say that glucosinolates are converted into isothiocyanate (ITC), which protects cells from damage that can lead to cancer, particularly colon, oral, breast, and skin cancers. By increasing your consumption of leafy greens, you may help reduce your risk of cancer

They Support Gut Health

Collards, just like other leafy greens, contain fiber, which works to optimize digestive health by promoting a healthy microbiome. Researchers note that fiber contributes to regularity, which helps you avoid constipation. Additionally, some studies have identified a unique sugar in leafy green vegetables (sulfoquinovose), which works to feed the good bacteria in your gut. That ultimately supports the digestive process.

They Have Anti-Inflammatory Properties

According to research, some of the compounds in collard greens may exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. For that reason, incorporating collards into your diet may help reduce the risk of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Collard greens also contain lutein, carotenoids, zeaxanthin, and other antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress. Lowering the amount of oxidative stress in the body may help reduce inflammation, which may decrease the risk of certain health conditions.

They May Help People With Diabetes

As mentioned earlier, collards are rich in fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements and satiates you after a meal. Increasing your fiber intake has been associated with a lower risk of stroke and type 2 diabetes. The belief is that fiber reduces inflammation and levels of glucose in people with type 1 diabetes. Other research shows that fiber works to maintain healthy insulin and blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. More research is necessary to see how the fiber in collards directly benefits diabetic patients.

They May Improve Bone Health

The impressive amount of vitamin K1 in collard greens, in addition to the vitamin K2 in animal foods, is critical for healthy bones. The body requires vitamin K for calcium absorption, which reduces the risk of fractures. Because collard greens contain both calcium and vitamin K, adding them to your diet can help keep your bones healthy. For reference, the average vitamin K recommendation for adult males is 120 micrograms (mcg) per day and 90 mcg per day for adult women.

The post The Top 6 Health Benefits Of Lotus Root appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

Most people know of the lotus flower, which sits beautifully atop pond water. To this day, the lotus flower symbolizes beauty and rebirth. It’s not often that people think about the lotus roots, which stretch deep into the mud of the ponds they grown in. The lotus root is not only edible and popular in Asian cuisine, but also a great source of various health properties.

Similar to burdock root, lotus rhizomes contain antioxidants that help fight against free radicals and protect cells in the body. Studies have shown that compounds in lotus root may aid digestion, improve cardiovascular function, support brain health, and reduce inflammation. It exhibits a crunchy texture and nutty flavor, and you can incorporate it into salads, soups, and stir-fries. The nutritional profile of lotus root is almost as distinct as its appearance. For example, one raw lotus root provides:

  • Calories: 85.1
  • Protein: 3 gram (g)
  • Carbohydrates: 19.8 g
  • Fat: 0.1 g
  • Sodium: 46 milligrams (mg)
  • Vitamin C: 56% of the daily value (DV)
  • Vitamin B6: 18% of the DV
  • Copper: 33% of the DV
  • Riboflavin: 23% of the DV
    Thiamine: 17% of the DV
  • Phosphorus: 9% of the DV
  • Potassium: 14% of the DV
  • Magnesium: 6% of the DV
  • Manganese: 13% of the DV

Boosts Brain Function

Lotus root, along with sunflower seeds and cashews, is an excellent plant-based source of copper. Researchers note that copper strengthens bones, improves energy levels, supports metabolism, and enables the function of neural pathways. One study suggests that the polyphenolic compounds in lotus root improve neural function by boosting the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factors in glial cells. These are the most abundant type of cells in the central nervous system

Improves Cardiovascular Health

In addition to the antioxidant compounds, lotus root is rich in fiber and potassium, both of which improve cardiovascular function. People with low potassium levels have a higher risk of heart disease, especially stroke. Potassium, magnesium, calcium, and other minerals prevent the buildup of fluids in cells. That means potassium helps lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of other cardiovascular issues. Research also notes an inverse association between people who eat foods higher in insoluble fiber and cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Reduce Risk Of Birth Defects

Lotus root is a great source of beneficial nutrients (primarily folate) for pregnant women. Women in their childbearing age should be mindful of the amount of folate they consume. The reason for that is sufficient folate intake can help prevent neural tube defects, which can occur during early pregnancy. The calcium, choline, and iron in lotus root also support a healthy pregnancy

Promotes Glowing Skin

Vitamin C benefits the skin in several different ways, and lotus root happens to be a great source of this nutrient. The skin has high concentrations of vitamin C, which promotes collagen synthesis and helps protect the skin from damaging free radicals. Vitamin C also works to reduce the signs of aging, dark patches, and skin discoloration. Preliminary studies note that lotus root may possess anti-aging and anti-wrinkling effects

Supports Energy Levels

Regular lotus root consumption may increase iron levels, and iron supports ongoing energy by helping oxygen reach cells. Iron-deficient people tend to feel tired, sluggish, and have difficult concentration. When you eat iron-rich foods, you help increase oxygen to cells and muscles. It also helps iron promote the proper absorption of nutrients and digestion of proteins. Other iron-rich foods include spinach, lentils, tempeh, beans, and Swiss chard.

Aids Digestion And Weight Management

Lotus root contains quite a bit of fiber, which aids digestion by bulking up stool. A diet rich in fiber can make you feel satiated for a longer period of time, meaning you won’t overeat or eat for no reason. According to research, fiber helps reduce hunger, in addition to relieving constipation. By reducing hunger, you reduce your total caloric intake and prevent gain. Additionally, fermented lotus root exhibits gastroprotective effects in a study with rats. The antioxidants in lotus root also aid the digestive process.
