No, you don’t have to drop and give us 20 or engage in burpees while on the plane. There are many movements and stretches that may help prevent blood clots on the plane during upcoming travel, according to health experts. These exercises are for everyone and any travel plans, be they for upcoming holiday visits, business, or vacation.

The most dangerous flights are long-distance ones, which generally exceed four hours. Certain passengers have a higher risk of developing deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots, during longer flights. The longer the flight, the higher the risk of developing a clot. In fact, the American Society of Hematology suggests that flights that last eight to 10 hours pose the greatest risk.

Being on a plane, or traveling in general, for long hours can cause blood clots. Sitting for long periods can slow circulation, which contributes to the formation of clots. Plus, the limited leg room on an airplane doesn’t do your body any favors. Additionally, lack of back support can make you uncomfortable all over the body. That’s why experts suggest engaging in certain exercises and stretches to help reduce muscle tightness and the risk of blood clots.

5 Exercises To Try On Your Next Flight

The best exercise to help prevent blood clots is to stand up and walk around the plane. Since space is a limiting factor, especially if the plane is smaller, you cannot always get up in the aisle and walk around. Fortunately, there are beneficial movements you can do without leaving your seat, provided you cannot get up on your flight. All of the following exercises work to increase circulation to your lower extremities, including the ankles, calves, hamstrings, and quads. Experts recommend that you repeat each exercise every one to three hours, depending on your risk of blood clots.

Seated Marches

This is a gentle exercise that works to improve blood circulation throughout the cardiovascular system by contracting the leg muscles. Sit up straight in your seat so that you aren’t leaning against the back of the seat. Aim to sit on the edge of your seat, if space allows, and keep both feet flat on the floor, knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Lift one knee about two to three inches off the floor, while you keep the other foot on the ground. Engage your core to prevent curling or flexing in the lower back. Return your foot to the floor in a controlled manner and then repeat the same motion on your other leg. Complete 10 to 20 reps per leg.

Heel Raises

This is a great movement to promote blood flow, as it requires you to contract the biggest muscle in your calf. You have to complete this exercise standing up, either standing in the aisle or back of the plane. Stand up straight with your feet hip-distance apart and use your seat to provide stability and support. Squeeze your glutes and engage your calves to raise both heels off the ground as high as you comfortably can. In the apex of the exercise, you should be standing on the balls of your feet. Pause at the top and then slowly lower back down to the starting position. Complete a total of 20 reps.

Seated Hamstring Stretch

You can do this stretch at your seat in the gate area, or at your seat on the plane. It aims to improve flexibility in the hamstring muscles, which can easily tighten during a longer flight. Sit up straight at the edge of your seat and fully extend your right leg out in front of you, placing your heel on the ground and toes pointed up. Keep your left knee bent with your foot planted flat on the floor. Hinge at the hips to lean forward until you feel a stretch along the back of your thigh. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds and then slowly return to the upright position. Switch sides and then repeat two to four more times per leg.

Seated Ankle Pumps

Promote blood flow by activating the muscles in the lower leg, which works to decrease the risk of blood clot formation. This muscle contraction encourages blood flow from the legs up to the heart. Sit up straight with your back against your seat, keeping your feet flat on the floor. Make sure that your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle as you lift your heels off the ground while keeping your toes on the floor. Lower the heels back to the ground and then raise your toes toward the ceiling. Continue alternating to complete a total of 20 reps.

Piriformis Stretch

The piriformis muscle runs from your lower spine through your butt and to the top of your thighs. Sitting for long periods of time can easily aggravate and inflame this muscle. If this muscle tightens, it can compress the sciatic nerve, so stretching it can help prevent lower back and hip pain during your flight. Sit up straight at the edge of your seat with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and feet planted on the ground. Cross your right knee over your left so that your right ankle is resting just above your left knee. You can use your right hand to gently press down on your right inner thigh to open up the hip. You should feel a stretch along your glute and outside of your hip. To increase the stress, lean forward slightly. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds and then repeat on your left leg.

According to a January 2023 U.S. Travel Association survey, 52% of Americans said they plan to travel within the next six months. Traveling is a wonderful way to open your eyes to new cultures, cuisines, spiritual practices, and unique, memorable experiences. It helps you become a more worldly person, and it can be incredibly relaxing.

One study found that people who were able to travel more frequently reported better mental, physical, and emotional health when compared to people who remained at home. While seeing the sun greet the day from atop dormant volcano in Indonesia is an amazing experience, the journey to your destination is not always the most pleasant. From flight or train delays to travel-related upset stomach, traveling is not always easy on the body and mind.

Changing time zones can disrupt your circadian rhythm and airport or plane food may not always sit well. Prolonged immobility, especially on a long transatlantic flight, can lead to aches and pains. Sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of blood clots, which can be a very serious medical problem. Then there is the stress of potentially losing your luggage or becoming dehydrated! You see, travel isn’t always glamor and glitz! That said, we have a few helpful hacks in this article to make your travel experience healthier and more comfortable.

Consider A Pair Of Compression Socks

Long hours driving on a road trip or endless hours on a plane can be rough on the body. According to research, slipping on a pair of compression socks can help reduce leg swelling and decrease the risk of blood clots. If you don’t move for a long period of time, the risk of blood clots is much greater.

Pack Some High Fiber Snacks

It can be hard to find healthy snacks when you’re on the go, which is why travel experts encourage you to bring your own. Airport, gas station, and train station snacks can be limited to salty chips, candy, and sugary bars. When packing your clothes, shoes, and accessories before your trip, make sure to add some dried apricots, cashews, walnuts, or even some prunes. Prunes are naturally rich in fiber and don’t take up a ton of space in your bag. Plus, you may need them in case a traveler’s constipation strikes.

Move When You Can

When you travel by plane, train, or bus, you don’t have a lot of opportunities to move. For this reason, make the most of your time between stops. On a layover between flights? Walk around the airport or consider doing some bodyweight exercises in an uncrowded portion of a gate area. Bypass moving walkways and take the stairs instead of cruising up escalators. Taking a break from your normal workout routine is very standard while traveling, but if you are inspired to engage in a quick workout in the hotel gym, we encourage it! That said, you tend to do a lot of walking while on vacation, and getting those steps in is great for your body, but be sure to stretch to avoid pain

Bring An Eye Mask And Travel Pillow

These are two essential items that you should travel with for several reasons. First off, a travel pillow during transit can help you relax more easily on planes. Additionally, it helps to prop your neck up so it doesn’t keep dropping to one side. Plus, you won’t wake up with a kink in your neck from it drooping in a weird way. An eye mask may also help you sleep on a plane, especially if the flight crew doesn’t dim the lights. It can also be beneficial to wear at your hotel, hostel, or AirBnB, especially if your room doesn’t have great curtains or shades.

Seek Out Morning Sun

There are many health experts that encourage stepping out into the sunlight every morning. This is a crucial first step for the morning after you land because staring in the sun’s general direction can help signal your brain that it is time to be awake. Within an hour of waking up, get some sunlight exposure because it helps to reset the body’s circadian rhythm. Not only does this help you feel more energized during the day, but it also signals the body to produce melatonin (the hormone necessary for sleep) about 12 hours later.

Adjust Your Sleep Schedule

When you finally arrive at your destination, especially if the journey was long, it can be very tempting to crawl into bed and fall asleep. Travel experts warn against this if you want to establish a better circadian rhythm in your travel destination. It is best to start sleeping according to your destination’s time zone as soon as possible. This can be challenging, especially if you arrive early in the morning after a long day of traveling. You should also try to maintain your regular routines, whatever they may be. That may include reading or meditation as soon as you wake up or before you go to sleep. Try to eat your meals and snacks at the same times you do when you’re at home as well.

Hair loss affects men and women alike, and genetics, health issues, circumstances, and medications all factor into the equation. Some forms of hair loss are merely temporary, while others, like pattern baldness, are permanent. The reality is that hair loss is more common than most people realize and common culprits are popular medications that people take.

Certain medications cause hair loss because they interfere with normal, healthy growth cycles of hair follicles. Studies report that if hair follicles cannot grow properly, or if something inhibits the growth cycle, that is when hair may fall out. The good news is that hair loss from medications is often temporary, meaning that once you stop the drug, your hair will come back to normal. The hair loss process, though, can chip away at your self-esteem and cause confidence issues.

Medications And Hair Loss

Medications can disrupt growth at different stages. Short-term or temporary hair loss, often takes place during the resting phase, or telogen effluvium. Another type of hair loss caused by medications is anagen effluvium, which is a long-term type of loss that can lead to thinning and body hair loss as well. Anagen effluvium takes place in the hair’s new growth phase. Below, you’ll find common drugs that can cause both of these types of hair loss.

Anticoagulants (Blood Thinners)

This class of medications helps prevent blood clots. Anticoagulants, or blood thinners, work by stopping blood clots from forming. There are numerous cases of hair loss as a result of taking blood thinners, and it can take some time to determine that they are the cause. If hair loss starts after taking a certain blood thinner, consult with your doctor about a newer class of blood thinners, which are less likely to cause hair loss.

Certain Antidepressants

Anxiety or stress can cause hair loss, but so can the medications people take to treat those conditions. In addition to causing hair loss, certain antidepressants can affect reproductive hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. Altering the production of either of these hormones can affect hair growth, according to medical experts. Common antidepressants that may cause hair loss include selective serotonin inhibits like prozac, and tricyclic antidepressants like elavin.

Beta Blockers

Beta blockers are used to treat high blood pressure and several other heart conditions. Propranolol, atenolol, metoprolol, and timolol eye drops are some of the most commonly used beta blockers that can cause hair loss. Cozaar, another type of blood pressure medication, can also cause hair loss, but it isn’t a known side effect of that medication.

Prescription Anti-Inflammatory Medication

People who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can experience hair loss. Sometimes, though, the medications that people take to relieve symptoms of these conditions have the same effect. Two of the most common anti-inflammatory medications that cause hair loss include Arava, which causes hair loss in 10% of all users, and methotrexate, which causes hair loss in 3% of all users.

Chemotherapy

This common cancer treatment works to kill cancer cells. An unfortunate reality is that many people who receive chemotherapy experience hair loss because the medication kills other fast-growing cells in the body, including hair follicles. Hair loss can occur within days or weeks after receiving the medication, and hair loss effects are fairly noticeable after one or two months. Hair typically grows back within one to three months after completing treatment.

Acne Medication

Although acne medication may benefit acne-prone skin, this medication may damage your scalp, according to dermatologists. Acne medication is derived from vitamin A, which is an integral nutrient for hair and eyesight. When you take it in high amounts, hair follicles kick into overdrive. As a result, your hair reaches the ends of the development phase faster than it normally does, causing it to fall out. Because the body cannot produce new hair quickly enough to replace it, you experience hair thinning or bad patches.

Hormonal Contraceptives

Any birth control method, such as the pill, patch, or vaginal ring, that contains estrogen can cause hair loss. As mentioned earlier in this article, hormonal changes that occur in the body can affect hair growth. When the body experiences shock or stress (e.g. hormonal changes via birth control pills), hair roots are pushed into their resting state prematurely. During that time, about 70% of your scalp sheds hair. Don’t worry because this is a temporary side effect and your body tends to adjust to the pill’s hormonal effects over time.

The human body makes most of the fats that it needs from raw materials or other fats. This isn’t the case for omega-3 fatty acids. The body cannot make essential fats, so you must get them from food sources. The same applies for essential amino acids, which are proteins that the body does not produce. Foods that are rich in omega-3s include vegetable oils, nuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, flaxseed oil, fish, and leafy vegetables.

What Are Omgea-3s?

Omega-3 fatty acids only exist in certain foods and supplements. They are integral components of cell membranes throughout the body and provide a starting point for hormonal production. Omega-3s also work to regulate blood clotting, reduce inflammation, and aid with the contraction and relaxation of arterial walls. Because of these effects, omega-3s may help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and may protect against eczema and rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, most of the research on the benefits of omega-3s lies in the realm of heart health.

There are different types of omega-3s: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Many health experts encourage people to consume foods that have larger amounts of EPA and DHA because the body can use them immediately after consumption. ALA has to be converted into DHA and EPA in order for the body to use it for something other than energy. If the body doesn’t convert ALA into EPA or DHA, it stores it for later energy like any other fat.

What Are EPA And DHA?

Both EPA and DHA are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These healthy fats are derived from marine sources, primarily algae, which many fish consume. That’s why fish oil and fish tend to be the richest sources of EPA and DHA. Walnuts, flax seeds, vegetable oils, and leafy vegetables are excellent sources of ALA. The amount of ALA that the body converts into EPA or DHA is very small. In fact, several studies confirm that Western diets only convert about five to eight percent of ALA into EPA, with less converting to DHA at 0.5 to five percent.

Although ALA, EPA, and DHA are all PUFAs, ALA is the shortest of the three. EPA has 20 carbons and five double bonds, DHA has 22 carbons and six double bonds, and ALA has 18 carbons and three double bonds. These chemical differences indicate that each fatty acid is unique and plays a different role in physiological health. As previously mentioned, it’s more common for people to to consume ALA than EPA or DHA. This is because Americans don’t typically consume an array of marine omega-3s. In fact, most Americans consume too many omega-6 fatty acids, which can contribute to widespread inflammation. You can click here to learn more about the different omegas. Eating more EPA and DHA is not difficult, but you can supplement if you don’t enjoy the foods that contain them. You can experience the following benefits with more EPA and DHA in your diet.

Health Benefits Of EPA And DHA

When you consume enough of these omega-3s, you can improve your health in numerous ways. For example, women who are trying to become pregnant, or nursing mothers, benefit from adding more EPA and DHA to their diets. This is because a developing fetus or breastfeeding baby requires DHA for brain and nervous system development. Other benefits can include:

  • Inflammatory conditions: Omega-3s have demonstrated an ability to regulate inflammation in the body by reducing inflammatory markers.
  • Vision: According to some research, regular omega-3 consumption may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and dry eye disease. Research is still preliminary in this regard, though.
  • Brain health: Several studies indicate that omega-3s may support cognitive function and protect against cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Heart health: Research surrounding heart health is more prevalent in regards to omega-3s. These fatty acids may help reduce blood pressure, lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and help the heart beat at a steady rate.

High quality sources of EPA and DHA are most important for dietary intake. If you are interested in supplementing with omega-3s, consider consulting with a health care professional to determine which supplement and dose is beneficial for you.

Many health experts argue that vaccination is the best protection against the COVID-19 virus. The more people who receive the vaccines, the closer the country gets to achieving herd immunity, which may put an end to the pandemic. There are those who fear or do not trust the vaccines and think COVID-19 is a hoax, while others take it very seriously. For many, fears about the vaccine were confirmed when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently recommended the pause on Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) Janssen COVID-19 vaccine.

Six women experienced blood clots after receiving the J&J vaccine. One woman died and another woman was hospitalized. Was the vaccine the primary cause of these events? Researchers are hard at work to determine the reason why this happened. Nonetheless, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that health care professionals stop administering the vaccine. The reason for this is to allow time for researchers to determine the cause of the clots, which are unusual side effects.

Health experts agree that the clots are not dissimilar to the rare clots that some people experienced as a result of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Preliminary studies show that the J&J shot may trigger an immune response that causes clotting. More research is necessary to confirm this link, though. As of now, The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will hold a second emergency meeting to discuss the J&J vaccine on April 23, 2021.

How Does The J&J Vaccine Work?

The J&J vaccine is a viral vector vaccine. Using a modified version of an inactive virus, it helps make spike proteins that trigger an immune response in the body. The vaccine contains a harmless virus, not the one that causes COVID-19. The immune response triggers the immune system to make antibodies to fight future infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. According to the University of Maryland Medical System, vector vaccines do not interact or affect your DNA. You don’t contract COVID-19 from this vaccine.

What’s The Deal With The Blood Clots?

Two recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine examined the clots in people who received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The findings indicated that the people may have developed cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). This development came in combination with low levels of blood platelets, called thrombotic thrombocytopenia. A small percentage of people who receive heparin, a type of blood thinner, can develop CVST.

In the J&J cases, clots occurred in veins in the abdomen and brain, both of which are unusual locations for clots. Both J&J and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines are adenovirus vaccines, also known as vector vaccines. Dr. Amesh Adalja at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security suggested that the adenovirus vectors may be linked to blood clot development. After injection, it’s possible for the vector to generate antibodies that interfere with platelet function. This can imitate heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, which is treatable and diagnosable.

This is a very unusual circumstance because clotting occurs at unusual sites. It does support the fact that clinical reports found that thrombocytopenia occurred in people who were never exposed to heparin. Scientists classify the development of the condition as an autoimmune response.

These Clots Are Rare

Health experts agree that routine blood clots will occur when hundreds of millions of people are getting vaccinated. According to reports, blood clots occur in one to two people per every 1,000 people per year. As for the CVST condition, roughly 5 out of one million people develop it annually. That classifies it as a rare condition. It’s even rarer for the clots to occur as a result of the vaccine. Seven million people received the J&J vaccine and only six developed clots. Even though this number is small, it is significant, especially if people are hesitant about the vaccination process and potential side effects.

At the end of the day, most health officials consider the benefits of the vaccine to outweigh the the risk of clot development. At the same time, the recommended pause of the J&J vaccine will lead to more vaccine hesitancy. Not to mention, it will slow the rollout of vaccines. Each person must make their own decision in regards to the vaccine, no matter which one they choose.

By now, most people are familiar with the most common symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-COV-2 coronavirus. You can’t go anywhere without seeing signs about cough, shortness of breath, fever, difficulty breathing, or muscle aches, in regards to COVID-19. You shouldn’t ignore these symptoms by any means, but new and unusual symptoms should also be to be on your radar.

Worldwide coronavirus cases increase by the week, and some cities or countries are coronavirus hot spots. Scientists and medical professionals explain that the surge in cases came with new, unusual symptoms. This is because a virus like SARS-COV-2 varies dramatically from person to person. The virus affects different organs and systems, and researchers attribute the unusual symptoms to this.

Can You Experience Both Usual & Unusual Symptoms?

Yes, this is 100% possible. The virus itself is unusual, so scientists continue to learn more about it with each passing day. A person with shortness of breath may also experience COVID toes, which you’ll learn about later in this article. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists all possible symptoms on its website. To learn more about the unusual COVID-19 symptoms, please continue reading.

Unusual COVID-19 Symptoms

Loss Of Taste Or Smell

This is a relatively new symptom of COVID-19, and some people experience this phenomenon well after they survive the virus. This occurs without nasal congestion and it occurs out of the blue. It can last 9-14 days, and some research says that this symptom may predict a COVID-19 infection.

COVID Toes

People commonly experience chilblains in colder weather, but new research suggests that a similar occurrence can accompany COVID-19. These red or purple toes look slightly inflamed and often affect young, healthy adults who contract the virus. Scientists claim that other viral infections cause inflammatory responses from the circulatory system, explaining the validity of COVID toes. Just make sure that the inflamed toes don’t develop lesions.

Delirium

For seniors or elderly people, delirium, confusion, or disorientation can accompany the COVID-19 illness. Health care workers have been instructed to question elderly COVID-19 patients about any falls or delirium after infection. One unrelated yet interesting fact is that elderly patients with urinary tract infections often experience delirium. Scientists need more research regarding the link between the COVID-19 infection and delirium.

Silent Hypoxia

A person with hypoxia experiences inadequate oxygen levels at a tissue level in a specific area of the body. As we know, shortness of breath is one of the primary COVID-19 symptoms, so people who experience this have very low blood oxygen levels as a result. Doctors claim that silent hypoxia is more appropriate to describe what they see in some COVID-19 patients. Scientists speculate that this may be due to blood clotting in small blood vessels in the lungs, but more research is needed to support these claims.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Some people who contract COVID-19 don’t experience any respiratory symptoms; rather, they develop nausea, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. According to a new study from Stanford Medicine, one-third of 116 COVID-19 patients experienced either loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or nausea. Studies revealed that SARS-COV-2 binds to ACE2 cell receptors, which exist in the gastrointestinal tract. This may explain the varied gastrointestinal symptoms in COVID-19 patients.

Strokes Or Blood Clots

Scientists around the world have studied the link between COVID-19 and dangerous blood clots. The sad part is that these blood clots affect people, who would not normally be at risk. If serious blood clots occur in the lungs, the person’s risk of heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism increases exponentially. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that five patients between the ages of 33 and 49 suffered strokes alongside COVID-19. Only one of those patients had prior history of stroke. Health experts say that the likelihood of young people experiencing strokes as a result of COVID-19 is extremely low.

You may or may not experience these unusual COVID-19 symptoms if you contract the virus. The symptoms you experience may be directly related to the cells that the virus infects. The important thing is that you are now aware of these symptoms. Continue to stay healthy and safe during these crazy times.

Vitamin K refers to a group of fat-soluble vitamins that help the body produce prothrombin, a protein and clotting factor that is necessary for bone health and blood clotting. It is rare for people to experience vitamin K deficiency, but it can happen, and it leads to increased clotting time, hemorrhaging, and excessive bleeding. People who take blood thinners, such as Coumadin or other anticoagulants, are not encouraged to consume additional vitamin K without consulting their medical care professionals.

Vitamin K is integral for optimal bone health, teaming up with vitamin D to efficiently deliver calcium to the bones in the body. Recent research by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay found that vitamin K may increase bone mineral density, decreasing the risk of fractures. Another study found that low vitamin K levels may lead to low bone mass density, increasing the risk of hip fractures in women.

Sources of Vitamin K

The bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract naturally produce vitamin K, but it is necessary to obtain vitamin K from dietary sources. Some of the best dietary sources of vitamin K include leafy green vegetables, vegetable oils, and fermented foods. For fermented foods, the amount of vitamin K will vary depending on bacterial strains and the fermentation process. The bioavailability of different forms of vitamin K will also vary from food to food. Some of the best vitamin K sources are listed below:

  • Natto
  • Collards
  • Turnip greens
  • Kale
  • Raw carrot juice
  • Grapes
  • Broccoli
  • Raw cashews
  • Spinach
  • Okra
  • Pumpkin
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Blueberries
  • Raw pine nuts

Benefits

The Harvard School of Public Health published a study claiming that vitamin K helps produce four of the 13 necessary proteins for blood clotting. As previously stated, vitamin K helps with wound healing and bone health. Some of our favorite vitamin K benefits are detailed below.

Heart Health

Several studies have found that adequate intake of vitamin K may help to lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of stroke. By inhibiting mineralization, where minerals build up in the arteries, the heart can pump blood throughout the body with ease. Mineralization happens naturally, especially as you age, so be sure include vitamin K foods in your daily diet.

Bone Health

Osteoporosis is the cause of over 8.9 million fractures per year, and it affects an estimated 200 million women worldwide. One in five men and one in three women over 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture. A large amount of data presents that these numbers could decrease by regularly consuming vitamin K-rich foods. What’s puzzling is that few therapies for osteoporosis recommend vitamin K consumption.

Cognitive Health

According to recent studies, higher vitamin K blood levels have been linked to improved episodic memories in older adults. One study revealed that people over the age of 70 with high levels of vitamin K1 had better memory performance than those with low levels of vitamin K.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin K should be as follows:

  • 120 mcg for men over the age of 19
  • 90 mcg for women over the age of 19

Vaginal blood clots are blood clots that are expelled from the uterus by way of the female vagina. A blood clot is a semisolid, gelatinous mass, the end result of the clotting process in blood. It ordinarily consists of red cells, white cells, and platelets enmeshed in an insoluble fibrin network.

Blood clotting is the conversion of blood from a free-flowing liquid to a semisolid gel. Although it can occur within the intact blood vessel, the process usually starts with tissue damage and exposure of the blood to air. Within seconds of injury to the vessel wall, platelets clump at the site. If normal amounts of calcium, platelets, and tissue factors are present, prothrombin will be converted to thrombin. Thrombin then acts as a catalyst for the conversion of fibrinogen to a mesh of insoluble fibrin, in which all the formed elements are immobilized.

Basically, the blood clots released or expelled via the vaginal channel are clumps of uterine tissue. They are commonly discharged during the menstrual cycle because the menstrual cycle is a monthly process of eliminating bodily toxins and waste via the menses. The expelled blood clots being expelled are nothing but old clumps of gelatinous uterine tissue from the shedding of the endometrium lining of the uterus mixed with coagulated or congealed blood and mucus.

These clots can be rubbery and very thick. The body knows when there are too many clots in the body and eliminates them. The menstrual cycle is the process of female reproductive elimination and whatever needs to be released from the female reproductive chamber will usually be released during the menstrual cycle.

Risk Factors

Women who suffer from vaginal blood clotting are women whose eliminative channels are usually blocked or impaired.

Tampons are unhealthy because they plug up the vagina, which has a natural downward spiral energy that supports elimination. They push things that may be ready for elimination back up into the uterus and cervix area. Because that downward and spiral eliminative energy is blocked, clots that may have otherwise been expelled or eliminated remain in the vaginal cavity due to that energy blockage. Blocked vaginal energy will stop physical vaginal activity like the releasing of vaginal blood clots.

If the blood clots remained in the woman’s body for long periods of time without being discharged, the woman could have developed a female reproductive area cancer, i.e. vaginal cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, etc.

Metaphoric Causes of Blood Clots

Emotionally, clots mean you need to let go of things or emotions that no longer serve you. These hardened, rubbery vaginal blood clots are the physical manifestations of “hardened” and “unhealthy” emotions, usually from the past (past hurts, past resentments, past pains, past anger, past frustration, past bitterness, etc.).

Releasing of blood clots means a woman needs to also release her stored “clots” of old, negative, hardened and toxic emotions and feelings she harbors within the uterus of her emotional body.

Excessive releasing of blood clots will also mean the woman is anemic.

Natural Healing from Blood Clots

While DHerbs.com does not endorse douching, douching with herbal teas for purposes of facilitating the dissolving and releasing of blood clots can be done with herbs such as:

  • White oak bark
  • Alum root (cransebill)
  • Goldenseal
  • Dragon’s blood
  • Shepherd’s purse
  • Lady’s mantle

Sexual intercourse while clotting should be avoided as all activity that pushes things up and back into the uterus area should be avoided.

Believe it or not, vaginal blood clotting is a form of healing and releasing. Get in sync with your lower (physical) releasing of old matter and start releasing on your higher level (emotional, mental, and spiritual) of old matter (negative emotions and thoughts).

Excessive releasing of vital blood will always result in anemia unless the woman is smart enough to consume necessary daily amounts of iron phosphate (organic iron) via natural sources such as:

A blood thinner is an anti-coagulant designed to stop blood clots. They are used to stop platelets, or heavy cells, present in blood plasma from forming clots (blood clots). They are most used in those who are at risk for heart attack, stroke, or aneurysms.

A blood thinner is usually composed of several different chemical formations, with the most common blood thinner, and most often used blood thinner being aspirin, taken in doses of 81mg per day, essentially one baby aspirin.

Aspirin has been recognized as a blood thinner for at least 50 years. Aspirin significantly reduces platelet counts. Often, doctors will prescribe a daily dose of aspirin as the only required cardiac medicine for a patient.

Side Effects

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services warns consumers of these side effects from blood thinners:

  • Menstrual bleeding that is much heavier than normal.
  • Red or brown urine.
  • Bowel movements that are red or look like tar.
  • Bleeding from the gums or nose that does not stop quickly.
  • Vomit that is brown or bright red.
  • Anything red in color that you cough up.
  • Severe pain, such as a headache or stomachache.
  • Unusual bruising.
  • A cut that does not stop bleeding.
  • A serious fall or bump on the head.
  • Dizziness or weakness

Some people who take a blood thinner may experience hair loss or skin rashes, but this is rare.

Natural Healing

If you feel you must use a blood-thinning agent, choose an herb such as Ginkgo Biloba or garlic, or drink green tea.

The blood should be purified periodically. It should be cleansed, rebuilt, and nourished. Herbs that can help repair the blood include:
