Making your own beauty products isn’t just a trend; rather, it’s a great way to enhance your skin and save money. Quality skin care products are hard to come by, and the ones that are great tend to cost an arm and a leg. Even then, those “natural” products can contain fragrances or other chemicals that harm the skin. With DIY skin care products, you know exactly what they contain, and the body has an easier time absorbing them.

Why Do Breakouts Happen?

Breakouts aren’t the worst thing in life, but they can ruin your day. Can you attempt to camouflage your breakouts? Surely, but that doesn’t address the real issue. Breakouts typically occur where the skin has the most oil glands, i.e. the face, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Hair follicles fill with dead skin cells, sebum (oil), and occasionally bacteria. This clogging can result in blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. Although acne is most common in teenagers, it affects people of all ages.

If the pore is clogged and you don’t see inflammation, that is called a comedone. If the comedone is closed, experts consider that a whitehead (the pimple or zit that looks whitish or yellowish). An open comedone has a black plug, that is a blackhead. The color comes from the bacteria and oil inside the pore, which turns black after exposure to the air.

Causes Of Breakouts

Many things can cause breakouts, but the good news is that there are easy ways to prevent them from happening. Although stress is thought to be a cause of acne, this is not actually true. Stress can increase the severity of acne because corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), a hormone released during stress, triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines. That promotes more oil production, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. In addition to stress, skin care products, acne treatments, diet, dehydration, and smoking cigarettes can all increase the risk and frequency of breakouts.

If you want to reduce the risk of breakouts, incorporate one, some, or all of the following DIY recipes to promote clearer skin. This goes without saying, but do not use one of these recipes if you are allergic or sensitive to certain ingredients. If you’re unsure of whether or not you have a sensitivity but you know you have sensitive skin, consider a patch test before applying the product all over your face. A small spot on the arm tends to be a great place to test products. If no reaction occurs within 24 hours, you should be good to use those ingredients.

Mani-pedis, massages, and facials are all great for your soul, especially when you see the right people. While home spa treatments are great for your health, it is very difficult to recreate a steam room at your home. Sure, there are DIY shower melts that you can drop in the shower, and you can create a facial steam tent with essential oils in a bowl of hot water. While these strategies are beneficial, they just aren’t the same as sitting in an enclosed, steamy space.

Steam Room vs. Sauna

Steam rooms differ from saunas in that they are heated with steam and not as hot. The big difference between steam rooms and saunas is the type of heat that they provide. A sauna uses dry heat, whereas steam rooms heat from a generator filled with boiling water. A sauna may promote relaxation and detoxification, but a steam room does that and more. Steam rooms mimic humid environments, maintaining 95% to 100% humidity. The temperature tends to rest somewhere around 110º F, which is only a few degrees hotter than your average hot tub. In contrast, saunas are very desert-like and range from 160-200º F, depending on which sauna you enter.

The practice of sitting in heat, or heat bathing, is an ancient practice across many cultures. From Russian banyas to Native American sweat lodges, heat therapy provides numerous health benefits. Within recent years, medical evidence supports these historical claims, and we’ll cover some of the most popular benefits below.

Helps Promote Decongestion

When you are congested, do you ever notice how much better you breathe after taking a hot shower? Take that feeling, amplify it by 10, and you understand that a steam room can help you breathe, especially if the steam is infused with eucalyptus essential oil. Inhaling moisture can help loosen nasal congestion, which clears up your breathing. Steam rooms may also break up congestion in the lungs, helping you breathe better and reduce cold symptoms. Just remember not to stay in the steam room for too long, as that can cause dehydration, which can increase congestion.

May Reduce Inflammation

Researchers agree that thermal therapy can help reduce systemic inflammation, which greatly benefits your overall health. Chronic inflammatory diseases are the most significant cause of death in the world, so reducing inflammation can help reduce that statistic. Roughly three out of every five people die from chronic inflammatory conditions worldwide. Inflammation can cause stroke, cancer, obesity, diabetes, respiratory diseases, and heart disorders. Frequently entering a steam room may help reduce the amount of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the body. CRP is one of the leading blood markers of systemic inflammation.

Promotes Cardiovascular Health

Older research identified that being in a steam room can cause certain people’s bodies to release hormones that alter heart rate. Aldosterone is one of those hormones and it regulates blood pressure. When you sit in a steam room, aldosterone is released and it may help lower your blood pressure, which is one of the reasons that you feel tranquil and relaxed. A newer study from 2021 found that steam rooms may improve heart function by reducing blood pressure. The study observed reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in healthy test subjects that spent 10-15 minutes in a steam room once a week for 12 weeks.

Reduces Stress

When you want to wind down and escape the world, a common relaxation method is to soak in a steamy bath. One theory as to why steam rooms promote relaxation is that they help the body produce endorphins, which are feel-good hormones. Another theory is that time in the steam room can reduce levels of cortisol, the hormone the body produces in response to stress. When cortisol levels decrease, you feel more tranquil and rejuvenated. Future research is necessary to examine the effects of both short- and long-term steam room use and bodily performance and response.

Helps Eliminate Blackheads

If you have ever received a facial, then you know how the aesthetician opens up your pores with a steamer, or a hot washcloth. The warm humidity opens up your pores, softening the oil and dirt inside for easy removal. Your sweat flows freely in a steam room, so your pores release bacteria, dirt, and oil in the process. You may not be completely free of blackheads when you leave the steam room, but dermatologists agree that a steam session can aid with the removal of blackheads. If you have very oily skin, though, you may want to pass on a steam room, as the humidity may make your skin even more oil-prone.

If you’ve ever combed through beauty stores or the beauty aisles at big box retailers, you are familiar with the plethora of makeup removal products. How do you choose the right cleansing oil, makeup wipes, mi cellar waters, or makeup removers? You should put a lot of thought into which makeup products you put on your face, and which products you use to remove them. For this reason, we want to provide you with a natural makeup remover that contains two nourishing ingredients.

What Is A Cleansing Balm?

A cleansing balm is essentially a skin cleanser that contains a combination of oils, waxes, and emulsifiers. Cleansing balms are solid, unlike makeup removers that are liquid. Like dissolves like, which means that oils and butters can dissolve other oils, makeup, and thick coats of sunscreen. Because cleansing balms contain natural ingredients, it takes two steps: the initial step removes makeup and the second step is a thorough cleanse, removing grime, oils, and whatever you didn’t remove in step one.

Shea Butter

Commercial makeup removers tend to dry out your skin, stripping it of its natural oils. This can lead to damaged and irritated skin, but this won’t happen when you use shea butter. Shea butter contains a large amount of oleic acid, which is a fatty acid that moisturizes and nourishes the skin. Shea butter is easy to apply and remove from the skin, and it also works to deep condition the skin, leaving it moisturized after makeup removal. Just make sure that the shea butter you purchase is unrefined because you want high quality ingredients for your skin, especially your face. There are unscented and scented varieties, but some scented shea butters contain essential oils that are harsh on the face.

Coconut Oil

Most of you have a jar of coconut oil in their pantry at this point. It’s been touted as the “miracle ingredient,” helping to whiten your teeth, reduce redness on the skin, or enhance the appearance of hair. Some people praise coconut oil, while others warn against it because it can potentially clog pores. It may be comedogenic, encouraging the formation of blackheads, but each person has their own opinion on coconut oil. According to beauty experts, coconut oil is an effective, natural ingredient for removing makeup. It exhibits antibacterial, anti-yeast, and detergent effects, all of which help to remove makeup

DIY Cleansing Balm

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unrefined shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil

Instructions:

  • Add the shea butter and coconut oil to the top of a double boiler over medium-low heat. Make sure there is about one inch of water in the bottom of the double boiler.
  • Once the ingredients are melted, stir to combine and remove from heat.
  • Pour the mixture into a small, heat-safe glass jar and allow it to cool for about 10 minutes. Place it in the fridge for about one hour to solidify.
  • Remove the cleansing balm from the fridge, screw on the top of the jar, and store it at room temperature. Use when ready.

A Quick Note: If you live in a hot climate, consider melting one tablespoon of cosmetic beeswax pellets with the shea butter and coconut oil. This will help prevent your cleansing balm from softening at room temperature.

It’s no secret that everyone makes mistakes. The beauty of humans is that we are not perfect, but we have the ability to acknowledge imperfections and change for the better. One of the biggest changes we can make is to switch from unhealthy skin care products to natural homemade products. This seems like a hard transition, but it’s a lot simpler than you think. We’ll hold your hand to help you bridge the gap, and you can start with a simple face wash.

Acne is one of the most common skin problems in the world. Everyone is prone to breakouts, but they may not always result from poor dietary choices. Often times, the harsh chemicals in commercial skin care products contribute to frequent breakouts. Items that supposedly cleanse the skin and remove bacterial build-up end up clogging your pores. When you take the time to simplify and use natural ingredients, though, you’ll notice a positive change in your skin.

Raw Honey For Your Skin

Why should you lather your skin with something that sweetens your tea? As it turns out, people have used honey on their skin for centuries. It has powerful antibacterial properties that historically aided with wound healing and skin cleansing. Raw honey works to moisturize the skin from within. It can do this because honey’s enzymes easily penetrate the skin, softening and hydrating it from the inside. It also works to cleanse pores of blackheads. The antiseptic and antibacterial properties work to remove dirt, while simultaneously hydrating and tightening pores. This contributes to a clearer complexion.

Tea Tree Oil For Your Skin

Where do we begin? Tea tree oil is nature’s secret weapon. Research has shown that tea tree oil exhibits powerful antibacterial, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. One of its most popular uses is to help get rid of acne. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help to unclog pores, reduce redness, and reduce the frequency of breakouts. Tea tree oil may also enhance the natural glow of your skin. One study found that using tea tree oil in combination with a carrier oil on the face helped reduce oiliness. It also helps to hydrate the skin, and it even out-performed benzoyl peroxide for reducing dryness and flakiness.

Jojoba Oil For Your Skin

Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oils to use on your skin. It’s a lighter oil, so it doesn’t feel heavy or thick after topical application. It works to hydrate the skin and provides optimal moisture by mimicking the skin’s natural oils. Jojoba oil actually tricks the skin into thinking that it has produced enough oil, eliminating the risk of excess oil production. The antibacterial properties also aid with acne reduction and controlled oil production. The high iodine content in jojoba oil helps to fight bacterial growth, which can cause breakouts. Finally, jojoba oil is the ultimate hydrator for your skin. By increasing natural moisture, jojoba oil contributes to a healthier, brighter glow.

DIY Toning & Clarifying Face Wash

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1/4 cup liquid Castile soap
  • 5 teaspoons jojoba oil
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add all of the ingredients to a dispenser bottle in the order that they are listed. Do not pour them in out of order or you will experience a soap disaster.
  • Gently stir the mixture to combine the ingredients. The mixture will look cloudy, but that is completely normal.
  • Place your dispenser bottle on your bathroom sink and use as you please.

How To Use:

  • Use one or two pumps of the soap and apply to your face. Rinse with lukewarm water after application.
  • It’s best to use once or twice daily. Make sure to give it a shake before each use.
  • If you don’t finish it within a month, discard the soap and make a new batch.

You can lather your skin with scrubs, masks, toners, oils, lotions, and more, but they don’t always make your skin look flawless. Sometimes, you need to take your beauty routine to the next level if you want to rejuvenate the skin. We’re not saying you have to dip your face in the fountain of youth; rather, a simple facial steam is the answer you seek.

What Is Facial Steaming?

Facial steaming is a simple process that works to enhance skin cleansing, promote circulation, release trapped sebum, and increase hydration. Steam opens your pores to soften blackheads and aid the release of acne-causing bacteria that clog pores. By increasing circulation to the face, you can experience an increase in collagen and elastin production. This promotes smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin. It’s also beneficial for people who have sinus problems. There’s really no downside to this practice!

Benefits of Facial Steaming

Reduces Excess Sebum

Sebum is the natural oil that sebaceous glands produce, and it lubricates the skin and hair. When sebum gets trapped under the skin’s surface, it’s easy for bacteria to multiply and cause blemishes and blackheads. When you open your pores with a facial steam, this trapped sebum can release and you’ll be less prone to blackheads and blemishes.

Promotes Relaxation

The warmth of a facial steam is relaxing for both your skin and your mind. Adding different herbs or essential oils to the steam can aid with relaxation. Additionally, many herbs and essential oils assist with skin cleansing and moisturizing. During your facial steam, try your best to focus on your breath. The goal is to take long, slow inhales and exhales, which promotes a stress-relieving benefit.

Cleansing Impurities

When you remove impurities or built-up bacteria from your pores, it’s possible to experience much clearer skin. Facial steaming helps to remove bacteria or other grime that can clog pores, leading to blackheads or blemishes. If you find that you suffer from stubborn blackheads, a facial steam is the right treatment for you. The steam helps to soften blackheads, making it easier to remove them. It also aids with the removal of dead skin cells!

Affordable And Easy

There’s no need to break the bank to improve your facial skin. A facial steam is mostly boiled water, and the rest of the ingredients are up to you. You can open tea bags and empty the contents into the bowl, or you can purchase some trusty essential oils for the job (tea tree and eucalyptus are great). The bottom line is that this is a useful home remedy that can drastically improve the health of your skin.

DIY Facial Steam

Ingredients:

  • Boiled water
  • 1 tablespoon dried elderflower
  • 1 tablespoon dried calendula
  • 1 tablespoon dried nettles
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosehips
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

  • Wash your face with lukewarm water to remove any grime or build-up.
  • Pour boiling water into a large, heat-safe bowl and add in all of the herbs.
  • Grab a large towel, lean over the bowl, and drape the towel over your head and the bowl, creating a tent.
  • Make sure you’re in a comfortable position because you should stay here for 10-15 minutes.
  • Once you finish this process, exit the tent and rinse your face with cold water to tighten your pores.
  • Pat your face dry and finish with a gentle, natural moisturizer.

Those small unattractive bumps that appear on the skin and stick out like a sore thumb are blackheads. You don’t have to be ashamed about them because everyone gets them. Be that as it may, the very sight of them can repulse you, and getting rid of them can seem like a never-ending journey.

This may come as a shock to you, but the most common reason that blackheads appear is because of clogged hair follicles. The common thought is that dirt resides in your pores, but the pores are actually full of sebum, an oil that the skin naturally secretes. Pores appear black or dark and while blackheads typically appear on the face, they can also appear on the back, chest, arms, shoulders, neck, and back. If you want to naturally get rid of them, you need some home remedies that do the trick. Experiment with the following and see which ones are most successful.

Baking Soda And Water

These are two items that everyone should have in their kitchen. According to dermatologists, baking soda is an excellent item to eliminate blackheads. The reason for this is because it works to neutralize any pH imbalance that may exist on the skin. Not to mention, baking soda is an excellent exfoliant, so it helps to remove dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells. Simply mix two tablespoons of baking soda with two tablespoons of filtered water to form a thick paste. Gently massage the mixture on the blackheads and rinse with warm water. Be sure to moisturize after because the mixture can dry out the skin. Only use this method two to three days per week.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can seemingly do no wrong! Just remember to purchase raw apple cider vinegar with “the mother” because that is the best type to get. Containing acetic acid, apple cider vinegar works to dissolve dead skin cells and remove other oils that can clog pores. Similar to baking soda, apple cider vinegar helps to balance the skin’s pH level and works to control sebum production. Pour a little apple cider vinegar on a clean cotton ball and gently apply it to the affected areas. Leave for a few minutes and then rinse with warm water. Repeat two to three times daily.

Turmeric

From the ant-cancer and antibacterial benefits to the anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal benefits, turmeric is wonderful for the body. It’s a common home remedy for acne because it helps to reduce inflammation. The important thing to remember about turmeric is that it can stain your skin, so you cannot leave it on for longer than 10 minutes. To make an effective turmeric mask, mix one tablespoon of turmeric with one tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply this paste to the affected area and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Green Tea

Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, green tea can help to reduce sebum production and inflammation on the skin. This means that it can aid with the removal of blackheads. Dermatologists agree that the best thing about applying green tea on the skin is that it works to prevent future damage to the skin. Steep two green tea bags in one cup of water for one hour. When it is lukewarm, apply the liquid to affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Do this once daily.

Lemon Juice And Sea Salt

Lemon juice does wonders for the skin because it contains citric acid, which has natural astringent properties. It works to both cleanse and tighten the pores, pushing blackheads to the surface. Sea salt is an excellent exfoliant, and contains minerals that nourish the skin. Since both sea salt and lemon juice are acidic in nature, they are beneficial for oily skin. Mix one tablespoon of sea salt with 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and one teaspoon of filtered water. Apply this mixture to the affected areas and leave it on for three to five minutes before rinsing with warm water. Then splash cold water on the areas to close the pores.

Some people have clearer skin than others. Every now and then, though, it’s possible for a rogue zit or pimple to appear and cause a little panic. How will you get rid of it? Will it scar? How long will it take to go away? Will you ever be able to show your face in public? We may not be able to put an immediate stop to your blemish panic, but we can provide you with an effective DIY acne spot treatment.

Why Do You Get Zits/Pimples Out Of Nowhere?

A sudden acne breakout with one or more pimples or zits can result from several causes. While it can be attributed to a hormonal change or imbalance, it’s often due to the high cortisol levels from stress or excessive sebum production. According to dermatologists, there’s no reason to fret when you see a rogue zit or pimple. It’s naturally jarring to see a zit in the center of your forehead, but stressing about it can actually make it worse. More often than not, you can address the problem easily.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Acne

When you use apple cider vinegar (ACV) to help get rid of acne, it’s very important to purchase raw ACV with “the mother.” The fermentation process of raw ACV creates acetic acid, which is a compound that has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Researchers attribute most of apple cider vinegar’s health properties to acetic acid and malic acid. When you apply ACV to the skin, the various acids exfoliate the skin, helping to remove bacteria and layers of dead skin cells.

Tea Tree Oil For Acne

Most people know of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide for acne treatment, but tea tree oil is a great natural alternative. Known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil works to fight against Cutibacterium acnes, a common bacteria on the skin. This bacteria is normal, but it does contribute to the formation of acne. This is why tea tree oil helps to reduce acne, specifically red bumps or pimples. The terpinene-4-ol in tea tree oil also helps to clear up non-inflammatory blackheads and whiteheads. Finally, dermatologists say that tea tree oil helps encourage white blood cell production, which helps to accelerate the healing process.

A Quick Note: Before you use ACV or tea tree oil on your face, please do a spot test on your arm or less sensitive area on the skin. You don’t want to have an adverse reaction on your face and make the zit even worse and more noticeable.

DIY Spot Treatment

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon filtered water
  • 4 drops tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • We recommend using a dropper bottle so that you can carefully apply the spot treatment when you are ready.
  • Add all of the ingredients to a small bottle, screw on the top, and shake it up to combine the mixture. The mixture should look opaque.

How To Use:

  • When you see a pimple or zit, wash your face and pat it dry.
  • Get the spot treatment and gently dab a drop or two to the affected area. Do not use more than twice daily.

We see three things during the fall: changing leaves, colder weather, and the emergence of pumpkin spice everything. Fall may as well be called pumpkin spice season because people obsess about the beverages, desserts, and DIY beauty products that are made with pumpkin spice. You want to know something? We aren’t mad at that at all! In fact, we embrace the pumpkin spice!

The pumpkin spice sugar scrub in this article exfoliates and nourishes your skin. It’s the perfect way to pamper yourself and scrub away the inevitable holiday hustle and bustle. Everyone needs to practice self-care around the holiday season. People typically focus on putting others first or they worry about which family member to see during the holidays, and they often neglect themselves. They can suffer from acne, dry skin, or premature signs of aging as a result, but the ingredients in this scrub can help counteract all of that.

How Vitamin E Oil Benefits The Skin

Vitamin E oil acts as both an antioxidant and a nutrient that helps to rejuvenate the skin. According to dermatologists, vitamin E oil helps to increase the nutrient levels of skin tissues. This can help to reduce stretch marks or lighten scars or dark spots. People who are looking to combat premature signs of aging often turn to vitamin E oil because it has been known to reverse fine lines and wrinkles. Because of the inherent antioxidants, vitamin E oil fights the oxidative stress on the skin, which contribute to the development of those fine lines and wrinkles.

How Brown Sugar Benefits The Skin

When you include brown sugar in DIY skin care products, it’s always best to purchase organic brown sugar. The granulated particles of brown sugar help to exfoliate the skin, removing dry or dead skin cells and bacteria in the process. Brown sugar also contains antibacterial properties and glycolic acid, which helps to improve complexion and add moisture. Additionally, these antibacterial properties help to provide a protective barrier on the skin, which helps to keep out harmful toxins.

How Pumpkin Spice Benefits The Skin

Pumpkin spice enhances the flavor of your baked goods, but it also makes a name for itself in bath and body products. It’s a cosmetic spice blend of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, all of which help to reduce acne and provide increased circulation to the skin. Ginger, in particular, has powerful anti-aging properties and can help hydrate the skin, reducing any sort of dryness. Both cinnamon and clove help to soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation. Do you suffer from oily skin? Are you constantly experimenting with different products to get rid of stubborn acne? If you answered “yes” to one or both of these questions, then you clicked on the right article. You aren’t alone on your quest to clearer skin because acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. In fact, the annual yearly cost for treating acne in America amounts to $3 billion.

What Is Acne?

According to Mayo Clinic, “Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.” When this happens, the person can experience pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads on the chest, back, forehead, face, or shoulders. Teenagers commonly experience acne, but it can affect people of all ages. Fortunately, there are many natural ingredients that can help clear up your skin.

Grapefruit Essential Oil For Acne

Grapefruit essential oil is extracted from glands in the grapefruit peel, and it has a wonderful citrusy aroma because of that. It has a variety of health properties, one of the most notable being that it helps nourish the skin. Many face lotions or creams contain grapefruit essential oil because it has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, which help keep the face free of bacteria. A test-tube study found that grapefruit essential oil displayed antibacterial activity against P. acnes, a common bacteria that causes acne.

Coconut Oil For Acne

Rich in medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil has some impressive health properties. Lauric acid, in particular, has powerful antimicrobial properties that contribute to clearer skin. In fact, studies have shown that lauric acid works to kill P. acnes bacteria. Let it be known that while coconut oil contains antimicrobial properties, it is not an acne cure. It works best when used with other acne-fighting ingredients, like the ones in this scrub.

Sugar For Acne

The classic advice is to stay away from sugar if you want clearer skin. Well, eliminating refined sugars from your diet is an excellent way to boost your overall health and clear up the skin. As it turns out, sugar is an excellent topical exfoliant. When scrubbed on the skin, the tiny particles that make up sugar work to remove dead skin cells and reveal the healthy skin underneath. Sugar also contains humectant properties, which help to keep your skin hydrated by drawing moisture from the environment.

DIY Grapefruit Face Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2-5 drops grapefruit essential oil
  • 1 drop frankincense oil
  • 1 drop tea tree oil

Instructions:

  • Add the coconut oil to a heat-safe bowl and microwave it for 30-45 seconds, or until melted.
  • Pour the sugar into that bowl and mix well.
  • Add the drops of essential oils and stir to combine.
  • Spoon this mixture into a four-ounce glass jar or container.

How To Use:

  • Place a teaspoon-sized amount of the scrub in your palm and rub it on your face.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry.

There are many reasons to make your own face mask for optimal skin health. The most important one is that it will be free of chemical additives and harmful ingredients that irritate the skin. The last thing you want is to put more chemicals on the skin, especially after using chemical-rich skin care, hair care, and makeup products.

As many of you know, diet can influence your overall health. Unhealthy foods impair digestion, immune function, sleep, and circulation. While foods influence the health of your skin, so do skin care products. The skin can easily become congested and unhealthy when you use products that contain harmful ingredients. The good news is that you can easily decongest your skin and cleanse it of impurities with a simple DIY detox face mask.

What Does A Detox Face Mask Do?

The better question is, “What doesn’t this detox face mask do?” This face mask contains essential oils and a carrier oil, which benefit the skin in numerous ways, but the key ingredients are activated charcoal and Kaolin clay. These two ingredients help to shrink large pores, clear up blackheads, get rid of blemishes, and revive overall skin tone. Their benefits on skin health are described in more detail below.

Activated Charcoal For Skin

It’s not the most glamorous product to put on the skin, but it surely has some amazing benefits. The skin is constantly exposed to environmental and airborne toxins that clog pores. Activated charcoal helps to improve complexion by cleansing your pores. It does this by binding to dirt and pulling it out of the pores, making them less visible. Activated charcoal also has exfoliating properties that absorb oils and toxins on the skin, helping to reduce acne and excess oils on the skin.

Kaolin Clay For Skin

Kaolin clay is referred to as white clay or China clay, and it is almost entirely comprised of the kaolinite mineral. This clay is a gentle cleanser, making it suitable for all skin types. It works to absorb excess oils and extract impurities without causing redness or inflammation. People who experience regular outbreaks or acne benefit from using this clay. The long-term use of Kaolin clay results in toned and tightened skin with reduced wrinkles and fine lines.

DIY Detox Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon Kaolin clay
  • ½ teaspoon activated charcoal
  • ½ teaspoon filtered water
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop tea tree oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon jojoba oil

Instructions:

  • In a small bowl, combine the Kaolin clay and activated charcoal. Whisk these ingredients together and then pour in the filtered water. Combine into a paste.
  • Mix in the lavender and tea tree essential oils, along with the jojoba oil. Keep mixing and the mask will begin to form.

How To Use:

  • Apply a thin layer of this mask on your face using clean hands or a mask spatula. Be mindful to avoid the eye area.
  • Leave the mask on your face for five to ten minutes, or until the mask begins to dry. If you have oily skin, you can extend this time because the mask will take longer to absorb the excess oils.
  • Rinse the mask off your face with cool water and a clean wash cloth.
