Do you have lemons and hate chemicals and artificial fragrances? If that describes you then it’s time to start making your own non-toxic household cleaning spray. The beauty of the cleaning spray recipe in this article is that it only contains two ingredients: lemons and distilled white vinegar. If you don’t have lemons but have an abundance of limes or oranges, feel free to use them instead. Any citrus fruit will do!

Citrus season runs from late fall to late winter, so you may have a lot of oranges, lemons, tangerines, limes, or grapefruits on hand. This is especially true if you have citrus trees in your yard or neighborhood. Do you have friendly neighbors who leave boxes of wonderful citrus fruits outside their house for the neighborhood to take? Those are the best people! The point we are trying to make is that you will most likely have a lot of citrus scraps if you have a lot of citrus. Instead of throwing them in the trash or compost (more ideal than the trash), save them and make your own cleaning spray

Vinegar For Cleaning

It is important to note that vinegar is not a powerful disinfectant. It has some disinfectant properties, but it is nowhere near as effective as bleach or other commercial disinfectant products. This is why it is important to decide if you want to clean or disinfect. If you want to disinfect surfaces (kill most bacteria), you may want to use a classic disinfectant spray or cleanser that specifically kills germs.

Distilled white vinegar can be an effective household cleaner on certain surfaces. It is an inexpensive, easy-to-obtain product that is about 5% acetic acid, which works to break down the structure of certain stains, oils, films, or bacteria. That same acidic quality can harm certain surfaces, such as hard wood floors, aluminum, cast iron, waxed wood, or natural stone. Vinegar can be a highly effective cleaner for glass, refrigerator shelves/drawers, or removing water stains from showers. Just make sure to do the research on whether the surface you want to clean will or won’t be harmed by vinegar.

Gather Your Lemon Rinds

In order to make the cleaning spray in this article, you have to gather lemon rinds (or other citrus rinds) in a large glass container. Ideally, you should use a half-gallon mason jar, but a small pitcher or a few smaller jars will also work. A great time to make this cleaning spray is after you make freshly-squeezed lemonade, pesto, or similar recipe involving lots of citrus. If it is going to take you more than a week to collect all your rinds, add a little white vinegar to the jar by day six or seven. Pour enough to submerge the citrus rinds in order to prevent molding.

Once you have a good amount of citrus rinds in the jar (doesn’t have to be completely full), pour the white vinegar into the container to submerge the rinds completely. You can add some fresh herbs for increased aromatherapy, if you so desire. Let the rinds soak for at least one week, and up to three weeks. You can let the container sit out at room temperature, but make sure to give it a shake every few days to mix things up.

Lemon Vinegar Cleaning Spray

Equipment:

 • Large glass jar (or other container for steeping)
 • Spray bottle
 • Fine mesh strainer/cheesecloth

Ingredients:

 • Lemon rinds or citrus rinds (enough to fill the jar)
 • Distilled white vinegar
 • Optional: fresh aromatic herbs (such as lavender, rosemary, or thyme)

Instructions:

 • Collect your lemon or citrus rinds and stow them inside a large glass container. If you cannot collect all the rinds at one time, store the jar in the fridge as you continue to collect them. Should you need longer than a week, freeze the jar.
 • Once your jar is nearly full of citrus rinds, pour distilled white vinegar into the jar to completely submerge the rinds. Feel free to add a handful of fresh herbs at this time before you screw on the lid.
 • Allow the citrus rinds to soak in the jar of vinegar at room temperature for at least one week, and up to three weeks. Give the jar a shake every few days.
 • Strain the citrus rinds after the soaking period, removing as many rind chunks as possible to avoid clogging the spray bottle.
 • Pour the strained liquid into a spray bottle and use when ready. It’s great for laminate kitchen counters, stainless steel appliances, showers, sinks, inside the fridge, or other durable surfaces.

Depending on where you live, snowfall is well underway. Perhaps you are living your best life in the sunshine with beautiful holiday decorations that replicate a wintery vibe. No matter where you live or how much you decorate, you can take your holidays to the next level with some diffuser blends. Diffusing essential oils that are specific to the holiday season can enhance the spirit of holiday gatherings and activities. Have the room smell like a fresh Christmas tree lot while wrapping presents, for example!

Essential oils that remind you of the holidays typically have woody, citrusy, spicy, and refreshing aromas. Using oils that give off these scents can blend synergistically to your environment, enriching your holiday experience. Additionally, you may find that they brighten your space, elevate your mood, and comfort your soul. Continue reading to learn about some amazing essential oil blends for the holidays.

Safety First

Using essential oils for parties and entertaining is great, but there are a few safety rules to take note of prior to using them. Keep the following in mind, particularly when it comes to diffusing essential oils in public gatherings:

 • Inhaling essential oils can be harmful for certain groups and animals. Some of these groups include babies (especially six months or younger), children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, pets, and people with allergies or hypertension.
 • If your guest list includes anyone from the previously mentioned groups, it’s better not to diffuse essential oils at your event.
 • If you are diffusing essential oils, make sure that they are 100% pure varieties. You don’t want to skimp on essential oils because they may contain artificial fragrances, which can harm your health.
 • If you use an electric diffuser, only run the diffuser for little increments of time. Consider diffusing an hour before people arrive and then plug it in again after a couple hours. That will keep the aroma subtle and not overpowering.
 • Don’t diffuse in the kitchen or around food, snacks, and drinks.

Choosing The Right Essential Oils For The Holidays

Pairing essential oils to put in a diffuser is not specific to the holiday season. This is a year-round practice that you can do, but certain essential oils evoke a festive, merry atmosphere. Pine, cedarwood, spruce, fir, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg essential oils have different aromas reminiscent of different parts of the holiday season. Spruce and fir essential oils give off woody aromas, while clove and nutmeg essential oils give off aromas that smell like snickerdoodle or gingerbread cookies.

Citrus essential oils are also very popular to use during the holidays because citrus fruits are in season. Sweet orange and lemon essential oils offer a festive, bright balance to diffuser blends. You can also incorporate the cool, frosty scents of peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils. Last, but most certainly not least, you have the two holiday classics: frankincense and myrrh essential oils. Learn how to use all of these in the following diffuser blends.

Have you stopped purchasing scented plug-ins, candles, and air fresheners yet? If you haven’t done so yet, then it’s time to leave them behind. Almost all of those products contain toxic chemicals, some of which are known endocrine system disruptors. The average person isn’t aware of those chemicals because manufacturers don’t have to disclose the ingredients in signature fragrances. If you see “fragrance” on the ingredient list, please understand that there are many harmful chemicals that go into making those blends.

In case you didn’t know, some artificial fragrances disperse particles of phthalates and formaldehyde into the air. Phthalates are small particles of plastic that bind fragrance molecules together. You can easily breathe them in, whereby they get into your nose and lungs. In addition to those chemicals, the term “artificial fragrance” accounts for more than 3,000 chemicals. The reason that companies don’t have to disclose them is because they are signature, copyrighted blends. So there is no real way of knowing what is in an air freshener, unless you make your own.

This article provides you with recipes for 10 holiday-themed air freshener sprays. You will need a good collection of essential oils in order to make them. When you purchase these essential oils, make sure to purchase 100% pure essential oils from reputable companies with good reviews. Many of the essential oils in these air freshener sprays contain properties that may help combat toxins in the air, helping to purify the space. Now, let’s get started on those recipes!

The Supplies

You will need various essential oils, dark glass spray bottles (preferably brown amber glass bottles), water, some sea salt or Epsom salt, and distilled water. In order to use these air fresheners, simply spray them into the air. If your essential oils are clear and not colored, you can spray them on linens or upholstery.

Crisp Morning Air Spray

Start your day with the scent of a crisp winter morning. Notes of citrus grapefruit and orange evoke feelings of sunshine, while the herbaceous basil reminds you of the outdoor autumn and winter air.

Ingredients:

 • 8-ounce spray bottle
 • Pinch of Epsom salt
 • 15 drops each: basil, orange, and grapefruit essential oils
 • Distilled water

Instructions:

 • Add the Epsom salt and essential oils to the spray bottle and fill the rest with distilled water.
 • Screw on the top, shake the bottle to combine, and spray when ready.

Holiday Wreath Special Spray

A beautiful wreath is not only a lovely holiday decoration, but it also gives off an enchanting, woodsy aroma. The aroma is clean and crisp and it helps to deodorize your space, getting rid of any stinky smells.

Ingredients:

 • 8-ounce spray bottle
 • Pinch of Epsom salt
 • 18 drops eucalyptus essential oil
 • 12 drops rosemary essential oil
 • 12 drops balsam fir essential oil
 • Distilled water

Spiced chai may be popular in your home throughout the year, but it is extra special during the holiday season. The scent is comforting, sweet, and warm, making you want to curl up with a cup of tea on the couch.

Ingredients:

 • 8-ounce spray bottle
 • Pinch of Epsom salt
 • 25 drops cardamom essential oil
 • 8 drops each: clove, cassia, and ginger essential oils

Instructions:

 • Add the Epsom salt and essential oils to the spray bottle and fill the rest with distilled water.
 • Screw on the top, shake well to combine the ingredients, and use when ready.

Cool fall and winter nights are perfect for getting the deepest sleep possible. This air freshener contains essential oils that help calm the mind and promote relaxation and sleep.

Ingredients:

 • 8-ounce spray bottle
 • Pinch of Epsom salt
 • 6 drops cedarwood essential oil
 • 12 drops vetiver essential oil
 • 25 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions:

 • Add the Epsom salt and essential oils to the spray bottle and fill the rest with distilled water.
 • Screw on the top, shake well to combine the ingredients, and spray when ready. It helps to spray this under your pillow before you go to bed.

Crunchy Leaves Spray

When you see a pile of fallen leaves, the child inside you wants to run through it and stop on them. There is something satisfying about hearing the crunch, which then emits a woody, earthy aroma. The essential oils used to achieve that smell may help you relax and unwind for bed.

Ingredients:

 • 8-ounce spray bottle
 • Pinch of Epsom salt
 • 10 drops frankincense essential oil
 • 5 drops myrrh essential oil

People love to smell good and not everyone cares about the quality of the product they use to achieve that goal. Walking around and leaving a trail of enchantment can come with a cost, especially if you use synthetic perfumes or sprays. How can a few spritzes of perfume be damaging to your health? Please allow us to explain.

The Problem With Synthetic Fragrances

No matter the person’s age or health, synthetic fragrances pose several dangers. According to the National Academy of Sciences, roughly 95% of all synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum. They contain toluene, benzene derivatives, and other carcinogenic chemicals that increase the risk of birth defects, allergic reactions, and cancer. Some of these chemicals can even cause damage to the central nervous system and endocrine system.

It can be hard to pinpoint exactly which fragrances to avoid, since there are over 3,000 ingredients that pose health risks. The words “fragrance” or “parfum” on an ingredient label are legal ways to hide mysterious chemical ingredients. These blanket words can hide an unidentified mixture of ingredients that contain allergens, environmental toxins, neurotoxic chemicals, and endocrine disruptors. This is true for perfumes, shampoos, air fresheners, deodorants, plug-ins, sunscreens, and soaps.

Creating Your Own Body Spray

Creating your own spray or perfume is a very simple process, but it may require some experimentation. Ultimately, essential oil blends can change over time. Sometimes, the scents can be quite overpowering, so you have to learn how much of each oil to include. One thing to note is that patchouli oil is very overpowering and can scare off some people, so don’t go crazy with that oil.

Homemade perfumes or sprays made with essential oils are much better for your health and the environment. The fact that a homemade spray is easy to make is also an incredible selling point. Plus, all you have to do is purchase essential oils you enjoy and you can keep experimenting with new combinations every batch you make. Just keep in mind that DIY essential oil scents may not last as long as the chemical perfume fragrances you are used to. While you won’t have to worry about endocrine system disruption or potential headaches, you may have to apply the spray more frequently.

How To Make Your Own Body Spray

As a general rule of thumb, you should keep any liquid mixture containing essential oils in an amber glass bottle. The recipe below also calls for witch hazel with the optional addition of vegetable glycerin. Now, it can be beneficial to add the vegetable glycerin because it helps the scent last longer. In case you need a little inspiration about which essential oils to use and how much you need, there are several recipes below. Pick your scent or create your own. The possibilities are endless!

Citrus Body Spray

 • 10 drops tangerine essential oil
 • 10 drops grapefruit essential oil

 • 1/2 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (optional)

Instructions:

 • Add the essential oils to the dark amber glass bottle with a spray top.
 • Pour in the witch hazel and vegetable glycerin, and fill the rest of the bottle up with distilled water.
 • Shake well and use when ready. Store in a cool, dry place.

Floral Body Spray

Ingredients:

 • 10 drops geranium essential oil
 • 5 drops ylang ylang essential oil
 • 10 drops bergamot essential oil
 • 1/2 tablespoon witch hazel
 • 1/2 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (optional)

 • 1/2 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (optional)

The frequent hand washing continues in 2021 as we continue to battle the novel coronavirus. We mentioned this in 2020, but regular hand washing, especially with hot water, can dry out the skin on your hands. Add the excessive use of hand sanitizer on top of that and your skin looks like that of a reptile. Now that we are in the middle of winter, the dry and cold weather also contributes to dry skin on the hands.

When the cold weather arrives, many people start applying more lip balm on their lips than normal. Well, your hands deserve equal love and attention. It’s not practical to rub lip balm all over your hands, but that’s what hand creams are for! There is one problem, though, and it’s that most store bought hand creams or lotions contain contain fragrances. Some people don’t like fragrances and others do, but most people are unaware of why fragrances are bad for the skin.

The Problem With Fragrances

You see, fragrances are signature scents, and companies don’t have to list what ingredients are in those blends for copyright reasons. That means that some fragrances can contain non-FDA approved ingredients, or ingredients that are considered unsafe by the EPA. Fragrances are in about 50% of beauty products and they contain myriad toxic chemicals that can cause hormonal imbalances, cancer, and skin irritation.

Fortunately for you, the hand cream in this article is free of fragrance blends, but the cream does smell delicious. You’ll find a brief explanation of how the ingredients benefit your skin below.

Calendula

Known as the “Pot Marigold,” the calendula plant is native to the Mediterranean, but it grows abundantly around the world. The plant contains natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties, and it has been used in alternative healing practices for years. If you suffer from dry or itchy skin, calendula is an excellent ingredient for you. It helps to soothe and hydrate the skin by promoting the growth of collagen, an essential protein for your skin.

Shea Butter

When it comes to ingredients that nourish dry skin, shea butter is the first one you need to know about. It’s a moisturizing emollient, meaning that it helps to seal in moisture in the skin by establishing a barrier on the skin. Don’t worry, it won’t clog your pores! According to several studies, shea butter contains palmitic, linoleic, and stearic acids, all of which help to strengthen the skin’s barrier to help it hold moisture

Lavender Essential Oil

The first rule of thumb about essential oils is that you should not apply them directly on the skin. You have to mix them with carrier oils or incorporate them into a recipe with other skin-soothing ingredients that help dilute the oils. Lavender essential oil has a wonderful aroma and it works to nourish all skin types. Many reports found that it works to brighten and moisturize the skin, making it great for anyone experiencing dry skin. It also has wound-healing properties, which is beneficial if your hands are cracked, dry, or have little cuts from all the hand washing.

DIY Hand Cream

Ingredients For Calendula Infused Oil:

 • Calendula flower
 • Olive oil
 • Glass Mason jar
 • Cheesecloth

Instructions For Calendula Infused Oil:

 • Fill your Mason jar about 3/4 of the way with calendula flowers. Pour in enough olive oil to fill the Mason jar.
 • The amount of infused oil you make will depend on the size of the Mason jar, but you only need 1 tablespoon of infused oil for the hand cream recipe.
 • Cover the jar and store it in a cool, dry place for six weeks. Don’t forget about it.
 • After six weeks, strain the oil through a cheesecloth into another jar. Discard the flowers.

Ingredients For Hand Cream:

 • 1/4 cup shea butter
 • 1 tablespoon calendula infused olive oil
 • 6-10 drops lavender essential oil

Instructions For Hand Cream:

 • Add all of the ingredients to a food processor and blend until thoroughly mixed.

The post A Beginner’s Guide To Healthy Meal Prep appeared first on Dherbs - The Best All Natural Herbal Remedies & Products.

]]>

People on social media and food blog writers continually promote the concept of meal prep to maintain healthier diets. Not only is meal prepping incredibly easy, but it also makes eating healthy convenient and fun. The problem that most people have, however, is that they don’t know how to prep healthy meals. They think it is a daunting task that involves hours and hours of prep. That’s a false notion and we are going to illustrate how to prep clean and healthy meals.

What Is Clean Eating?

If you don’t know how to eat cleanly, don’t beat yourself up. Put down the burger and lettuce explain (that was a little clean eating pun to start you off). It’s important to clarify that clean eating is more than looking at labels that say “heart-healthy” or “fat-free.” Major food manufacturers mislead consumers with these terms and people end up buying “healthy foods” that are not healthy at all. To eat healthily, follow the tips below.

Avoid Artificial Ingredients

Artificial means fake, and you shouldn’t eat fake food when so much real food is available. You can identify artificial ingredients by looking for terms like “artificial flavors” or “artificial colors” or artificial sweeteners. Don’t eat foods with artificial anything! They aren’t healthy!

Don’t Eat Processed Foods

Processed foods and artificial flavors go hand in hand because most processed foods contain artificial ingredients. Besides having little to no nutrition, processed foods contain an array of chemicals and preservatives that extend the shelf life. Do your best to avoid foods with shelf lives.

Don’t Forget Fruits And Veggies

Omitting fruits and vegetables from your diet is mistakes one, two, and three on your path to a healthier body. When it comes to meal prepping, you must include fruits and vegetables in your recipes. They should be your first priority! It is also imperative that you eat the rainbow to obtain different nutrients.

Count Your Nutrients, Not Calories

We aren’t saying that you should ignore your caloric intake; rather, we are saying that you should focus on getting your calories from nutritious foods. The calories you get from a hotdog are not equivalent to the calories and nutrients you get from a home-cooked meal that consists of vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

To set yourself up for meal prep success, it is integral to prepare you favorite healthy options in bulk. Don’t be intimidated by preparing a lot of food at once. It is actually a great way to save money, save time, and save yourself from eating unhealthy food!

You Don’t Have To Cook Everything

Most people overcook food, especially when it comes to vegetables. High heat kills a large percentage of the nutrients, which is why it can be beneficial to prepare a few raw meals like salads or smoothies. You can make smoothie bags or divide a large salad into several containers for a couple lunches during the week.

Knock It Out In One Day

It is best to meal prep for the week the same day that you head to the grocery store to buy all your food. Your ideas about meals are fresh in your mind, which makes the preparation aspect fun and exciting. Make sure to do this on the weekend, or whatever days you have off, because you’ll need free time.

Change Up The Standards

You don’t want to make the same salad more than twice. You have to alternate flavors in order to keep you interested in the food. Make a southwestern dressing and add chickpeas, which have been sautéed in taco spices, to the salad with pickled onions, cilantro, and salsa. Instead of doing fried rice, blend some cauliflower and use that as the rice base. Add diced vegetables, sesame oil, liquid aminos, and other seasonings to the pan and enjoy! Check our recipe section for more information.

Pick Your Meals

You can use recipes that you’ve created or find healthy recipes online. The important thing is to choose two or three recipes that have a healthy balance of vegetables, protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. If you want to dive in headfirst and wing it, include at least one item from each column of the following table.

ProteinsVegetablesFatsGrains
Green vegetablesBroccoliOlive oilBarley
TempehSalad greens (arugula, red leaf, spinach, kale)AvocadoQuinoa (not technically a grain)
Wild Caught FishZucchiniNutsWild rice
LentilsTomatoSeedsBuckwheat
Chia SeedsSweet PotatoMacadamia nut oilBulgur wheat

Don’t forget that you need to get solid containers for your prepped meals. Glass containers are best! You can choose containers that have divided areas, but that is up to you. If you have any meal prep questions, let us know in the comments.

Cleanliness is next to godliness, but many soaps are outright made under devilish practices.

The ingredients in many mass-brand and designer-brand soaps are made with ingredients known to damage skin, penetrate the body and can have potentially dangerous effects with long-term use.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS)

Commercial brand soaps contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), also known as Sodium Dodecyl and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLFS), for its lathering effect. But this chemical called SLS is highly toxic and should be avoided at all costs. It causes eye damage, especially in babies and little children, when it gets into the eyes.

Numerous researchers have known for years that Sodium Laurel Sulfate is a skin irritant. Sodium Laurel Sulfate is used as a laboratory standard for irritating skin and inducing contact dermatitis. Sodium Laurel Sulfate irritates the skin by inflaming it. Many uninformed individuals are exacerbating chronic skin conditions by using soap, harmful soaps.

Animal fat

Most soap brands on the market also contain animal fat.

This is important if you are a vegan or one who abstains from consumption and use of animals and animal byproducts. The animal fat used in soap is called tallow.

Artificial fragrance

Commercial brand soaps contain synthetic chemicals to make them smell a certain way. ‘Perfume’ as a general word and ingredient means chemically derived fragrance.

Commercial brand soaps are using synthetic smells but these synthetic smells are chemically derived from harmful substances and agents.

Natural alternatives to soap

Natural brands of soap are made of or from glycerin, which is plant derived. Glycerin-based soaps are okay to use for bathing and showering purposes.

There are natural soaps that lather, and it’s OK if the sodium laurel sulfate is derived from coconut. Coconut-based soaps make for some of the best natural soaps, especially if you like foam and lather.
