A smoothie without a banana? Believe it or not, you don’t have to include banana in every smoothie you make. Yes, bananas offer sweetness and can help your smoothie achieve a smoother, creamier texture, but they aren’t always necessary. That is especially true if you are trying to watch your sugar intake. You can usually achieve the same creamy consistency by using avocado instead of bananas. This smoothie doesn’t have either of those creamy ingredients, but it does fulfill 273% of your recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin C, 62% of calcium, and 273% of vitamin A.

This green smoothie tastes of kale, but not overwhelmingly to the point where it tastes like lawn clippings. The sweetness of the apple and bright lemon juice work well to tone it down. Without the banana, the flavor of the apple really comes through. Plus, the addition of the almond butter adds a nutty, fatty component that takes your focus off the slightly bitter kale flavor. Just make sure that you remove the thick kale stems, or you’ll be enjoying a kale apple smoothie that really tastes like bitter kale.

To make this smoothie, simply add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth. The homemade almond milk will do a great job at creating a creamier consistency. As spring approaches, it’s time to welcome bright and refreshing flavors. The warmer weather makes you want flavors that represent the warmth. To avoid having a completely fruit-forward smoothie, we added the carrot, which provides extra vitamin A and carotenoids.

Even though this smoothie contains chia seeds, it doesn’t turn into chia pudding, primarily because it doesn’t have the proper chia seed to liquid ratio. Plus, even if the ratio was exact, the mixture would need time to set. You will drink this smoothie right away, so you don’t have to worry about taking a spoon to this smoothie. This smoothie is on the thicker side, though, but you can always add a little more homemade almond milk if you want a smoothie that isn’t as thick.

The key to this smoothie is to cube the mango ahead of time and freeze the cubes overnight. The frozen mango chunks will provide that creaminess that would otherwise come from a banana, which this smoothie does not have. The homemade almond milk also makes this smoothie a bit creamier, almost giving it a creamsicle- or milkshake-like texture. Carrots and apples go great together in juices, so it stands to reason that they make a heavenly match in a smoothie. The results are in: they work great together in this smoothie. It may seem odd to add carrot to a smoothie, but the inherent sweetness works well with other sweet ingredients like apple and banana. The cinnamon makes it taste reminiscent of a fall dessert, while the clementine adds a refreshing, zesty flare.

Because carrots are woody, they may not blend easily if you do not have a great blender. Even then, you may wind up with little chunks of carrot in your smoothie if you just chop them willy nilly. For this reason, we recommend grating your carrots prior to blending them. Whether or not you peel them is entirely up to you, but at least wash them before you grate them. It is entirely based on personal preference.

Although you can taste the carrot, it isn’t an overpowering flavor. The creaminess of the homemade almond milk, coupled with the sweetness of the banana and apple, makes the carrot flavor almost non-existent. If you want a little more healthy fats, toss in some ground flaxseed or chia seeds. And a little scoop of raw almond butter never hurt!
