Heat waves and record high temperatures present one primary challenge for people: how is it possible to stay cool? This proves more difficult if there is no air conditioning. To avoid rolling blackouts, some cities or counties advise people with air conditioning units to use more eco-friendly temperatures. That’s fine and great, but not everyone has functioning AC, or some people want to simply save energy and money by avoiding AC usage.

With record high temperatures of 105-115º F, it’s very easy to feel uncomfortable all the time. Not to mention, going outside seems like an impossible task. The heat from the cement seems to warm your feet through the soles of your shoes. Opening windows may not even let in a refreshing breeze. Occasionally, in fact, it may feel more like opening an oven door, depending on where you live.

To help people beat the summer heat without air conditioning, use the following tips and tricks. You may find that hot and sticky summer days and nights become more bearable, refreshing even. Let us know if they work for you in the comments below.

Cold Compresses Keep You Cool

If the heat is getting to you, apply a few cold compresses or ice packs to key areas on the body. When you feel overheated, apply ice packs to the back of the neck, lower back, and wrists. Do not apply ice packs or ice directly to the skin, as it can result in ice burn. Place a thin layer of cloth between the cold and your skin, preferably an old shirt or something of that nature. It’s also beneficial to take a cold shower to cool down, especially before bed.

Keep The Blinds Down And Curtains Shut

The darker you keep your house or apartment, the cooler it will stay when it’s hot outside. It’s wonderful and healthy to let natural light in your home, but reconsider that when it’s blazing hot outside. Heat can linger at night if you let sun rays in during the day. When it gets cooler at night, your home will cool off much more quickly than if it was light all day inside the house.

Get Creative With Fans

Fans don’t just blow air around, and if you think that’s all they do, prepare to have your mind blown. If you have a box fan, face it out against an open window so that it pushes out hot air that’s in the house. You can also adjust ceiling fans to have the blades spin counterclockwise, which helps draw hot air in an upwards motion. Position fans in a specific way to create more of a cross-breeze in your home. Set up multiple fans around the room, with one by an open window, to create optimal airflow.

Old School Tip: Place a tray of ice cubes in front of your fan and face it in your direction. The fan will provide a chilled breeze by picking up the cold that emanates from the ice.

Always Have Water With You

When it’s hot outside the body sweats at a rapid rate, which puts the body at a higher risk of experiencing dehydration. The body loses not only water via sweat, but also essential electrolytes. To counteract the water loss, make sure to always replenish with cold water. Regular water intake helps to counteract dehydration and heatstroke or heat exhaustion. If you feel thirsty then you are already in a mild state of dehydration. Get ahead of dehydration by drinking water before you feel thirsty.

Avoid The Meat Sweats

During summer, it’s common to grill large amounts of meat and eat until you can no longer move. Instead of heavy, meat-centric dinners, opt for smaller dinners that are easier to digest. When you ingest a lot of meat, it takes a toll on the body, making it work harder to break down the food. Swap out a large steak for a plate of whole grains, vegetables and legumes. Additionally, don’t eat two to three hours before you go to bed because eating late can make you feel hot or sweaty when trying to go to sleep.

Why are colds, flus, and other respiratory illnesses more common in colder months? People tend to stay indoors, which allows viruses to pass more easily from one person to another. The cold, dry air outside and warm indoor air with poor circulation may weaken the body’s resistance to these viruses.

You may strive to create a germ-free household, but this can prove difficult. That’s why health experts recommend that you set up a disinfecting routine. First, though, you have to understand the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines these terms as follows:

  • Cleaning: A process that involves scrubbing a surface with water and soap, which helps remove most, not all, germs and grime from the surface.
  • Sanitizing: A process that uses a diluted bleach solution or sanitizing spray to remove germs from surfaces or objects. Always clean before you sanitize.
  • Disinfecting: A process that uses chemicals or a stronger bleach solution to clear the majority of germs from surfaces or objects. Again, always clean before you disinfect.

Before you embark on your cleaning journey, identify the most high-touch surfaces in your home. Doorknobs, light switches, countertops, appliance handles, and faucets require frequent cleaning. It’s best to regularly wipe down countertops and other visibly dirty surfaces.

Wash Linens And Bedding Regularly

Shedding skin cells and sweat is completely natural, whether you are walking around or sleeping. All that grime can build up on soft surfaces in your home, including your pillows, blankets, and bedsheets. Health experts encourage you to change and wash your sheets weekly to prevent bacterial build-up. When you launder your bedding and bed clothes, you can reduce the presence of dust mites or other allergens that can hide in bedding. Get a second or third set of sheets to swap them out more easily.

Check And Change Your HVAC Filters

If you have a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in your home, you have to change filters regularly to keep indoor air clean. Some smart thermostats will even remind you to change your filters, which is very helpful. Thicker air filters tend to last longer and trap more allergens or illness-causing particles. Regarding HVAC filters, most companies recommend the following:

  • One-inch thick filters: change every 30-60 days.
  • Two-inch thick filters: change every three months.
  • Four-inch thick filters: change every six months.

Manage Humidity Levels

Humidity levels in the home can affect your risk of contracting a virus. According to a study from 2021, moderate humidity levels between 40-60% may reduce the risk of viral transmission. That helps make viruses less likely to survive in the air. Most home thermostats can detect or display indoor humidity levels. If the humidity level drops below 30%, you may want to invest in a humidifier, especially when cold and flu season is around the corner. Additionally, wash your hands and disinfect surfaces more frequently if humidity levels drop.

Declutter Every Night

Some people feel tremendous anxiety if they go to bed without cleaning up their mess. When you wake ups to a tidy room, bathroom, kitchen, and living room, some of that morning stress may not be there. You don’t have to deep clean your house every night, but a minimal cleaning session can go a long way in preparing your mind and body for bed. Put away loose items, wipe down countertops, do all the dishes (or put them in the dishwasher), and don’t leave cosmetics all over the bathroom counter. If all of that seems stressful, consider rounding everything up in a basket and placing that in one spot as a start.

Revamp Your Entryway

If you walk into your house and don’t remove your shoes, you are tracking dirt and other germs inside. The entryway, be it grand or small, is a place to shed your outside self before fully entering the home. Maybe you toss your jacket somewhere, fling your shoes, and discard your bag aimlessly. A tidy entryway can minimize clutter and help prevent germs from entering the home. Below, you’ll find a few tips to help keep your entryway clean:

  • Take off your shoes once you enter your home.
  • Use a basket or other receptacle to collect things that don’t belong in the entryway. Empty it regularly.
  • Create a designated spot for outdoor footwear, for example, a shoe rack.
  • Organize your cleaning supplies, such as disinfectant spray and wipes, and keep them on a nearby shelf near the entryway.
  • Install a light to ensure proper lighting in your entryway. This can make it easier to spot dirt or grime when cleaning.

There are some people who dislike the beach or hiking in the forest, but the majority of people thrive in nature. It is very common to feel recharged and more relaxed after visiting nature, but it is rare to feel it now that most people live in urban environments. Man-made interiors, synthetic fabrics, and chemical-laden products are part of the modern-day norm, but you can break free from the mold.

If you, like many others, have a newfound love for the natural world, there are ways to invite more of it inside your home. Some of you are probably familiar with indoor plants or even have some of your own. Maybe you notice a new leaf from a plant you’ve been attending to, or perhaps you observe when certain leaves get too much sun. There’s even a chance that you feel more centered and grounded when you walk barefoot in the grass.

Invite More Nature Into Your Home

The desire to reconnect with nature has never been stronger. The world is technologically driven, so it makes sense! Incorporating more nature into your home is more than adding a houseplant to your office. You can have an indoor herb garden, purchase natural, tactile texture, and use raw exposed woods for shelving. You can even consider eucalyptus or bamboo sheets for a more eco-friendly, soft touch to the skin.

We are no stranger to the moss wall or terra-cotta pots, but these things aren’t for everyone. Consider the following tips to help bring nature into your home and let us know which ones you like the best. You may already be doing some of these things!

Check Your Labels For Cotton

One of the easiest things you can start to do is buy 100% cotton clothing. Not only is cotton a more sustainable fabric than synthetic materials, but it is also 100% recyclable and occasionally biodegradable. Cotton shirts, for example, are much more durable, easy to clean, and get more comfortable over time. Beyond the sustainability aspect, cotton is breathable, lightweight, soft, and cozy. Whether you have cozy bed sheets, billowing curtains, or knitted blankets, cotton is a soothing vibe and a great natural fiber to have in your home.

Create A Beautiful View With Natural Landscape Prints

If the view from your window is a sea of buildings, invite some natural beauty into the room with a dreamy landscape print. According to several studies, looking at green landscapes helps to calm the mind, improve productivity, and relieve stress. Some researchers note that both moss walls and botanical prints bring life to a room. There are even some furniture pieces that are environmentally-rooted! There’s nothing wrong with having a simple desk plant, either!

Become A Plant Parent

When you become a plant parent, you understand the struggles of caring for a plant. If you are new to plants, ask someone which plants are best for indoors and which ones are low-maintenance. Many indoor plants can help improve air quality and reduce stress, all the while providing amazing natural decor. You can get a potted plant for your desk or buy a hanging plant for a shelf. Hanging plants can truly make you feel like you are in a jungle abode! If simple plants are not your cup of tea, consider a garden of microgreens.

Choose Tactile Textures For A Tranquil Kitchen

Trying to incorporate more of the biophilia trend into your home? Choose sustainably sourced natural materials and furniture that connect you more with the outside world. When planning a kitchen, for example, choose hard materials that exist in the natural world. Contrasting wooden herringbone flooring and a striking marble countertop or backsplash can add calming dynamics and patterns to your home. You’ll find that natural flooring, cork, or bamboo help ground you more than cement flooring does.

Divide Your Space With A Plant Rail

Hanging plants are great because they grow up and down out of their pots. They can truly transform your space, making it feel like you are in a jungle. A room divider can be as simple as a hanging device, from which you can hang plants. You can use such a divider in your office, bedroom, or dining room. It essentially acts as a wall between two spaces, yet it blends perfectly within the space. Decorating your home with plants means that they’ll release more oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Depending on the type of plant, it may or may not boost your mood and reduce stress levels.

When people think about health, diet, exercise, and sleep come to mind. They aren’t wrong because all of those things are fundamental to overall health. If you’re truly committed to creating a healthier life, you have to address your home, where you spend a lot of your time. Depending on your type of dwelling, your living space may require very little or a lot of upkeep. Regardless of where you live, there are a few key aspects to keep in mind. In this article, we break down the most important ways to keep your home safe and healthy

Preserve Indoor Air Quality

The air you breathe inside your home is the first thing to address. After all, indoor air quality can positively or negatively affect lung health. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAI) said that 50% of homes potentially have six allergens detectable in the air. Of those allergens, popular ones include pet dander, mold, dust mites, and cockroach droppings. You should ventilate your home when possible, but the weather can dictate whether or not the windows stay open or closed. For better indoor air quality, consider the following:

  • Vacuum any rugs or carpets regularly to control pollen, dust mites, and pet dander.
  • Try to keep your bathroom dry to help prevent mold and mildew from growing. Clean any mold you see on hard surfaces with bleach cleaners in a well-ventilated space.
  • Keep your thermostat below 70 degrees F and aim to have humidity levels between 40-50%, if possible.
  • Was all bedding once a week in hot water to help get rid of allergens.

Prevent Falls

Believe it or not, 60% of all falls occur in the home, where people spend the majority of their time. It’s very natural to let your guard down at home, so you move around in a distracted way without considering safety. To prevent falls or other injuries, the following tips may be helpful:

  • Install handrails wherever possible: next to toilets, along stairs, and in bathtubs.
  • Wear a medical alarm if you are at a higher risk of falls.
  • Make sure that your home has sufficient lighting throughout, and install night lights in bathrooms and other spaces you may need to access at night.
  • Choose larger rugs over small area rugs. For those larger rugs, make sure that the corners are firmly affixed to the floor, or you have anti-slip pads in place.
  • Make sure that there are no wires or cords obstructing common area walkways.

Clean Your Home

One of the best ways to maintain a healthy home is to clean it regularly. Disinfecting high-touch surfaces, cleaning your bedding, vacuuming your carpets, and mopping floors work to prevent indoor allergens (discussed above). Having a regular cleaning schedule can help remove general grime and germs, including the norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Disinfecting the home may be necessary if you or another member of your household is sick. Clean the following areas to maintain a clean and healthy home:

  • Carpets and other flooring
  • Light switches
  • Toys
  • Countertops
  • Doorknobs
  • Laptops, smartphones, and other electronic devices

In order to properly clean your home, you have to scrub surfaces with soap and water. Sanitizing the home is a little different, as it reduces germs with the aid of sprays or products that contain a small amount of bleach. Always remember to clean surfaces before sanitizing them. If you are sick, disinfection may be necessary, especially for high-touch surfaces.

Store Your Food Properly

The way you store your foods is just as important as the foods you eat. Because of increased exposure to harmful ingredients in various plastics, health experts advise looking for containers that are free of bisphenol A (BPA). High exposure to BPA may have adverse effects on reproductive health. Glass containers are excellent, but make sure that you check that the materials are free of BPA. Additionally, make sure your bottled water, or reusable bottles, are BPA-free.

Personal Hygiene And Medical Supplies

Smelling great is a beautiful thing, but personal hygiene goes beyond soaps and bath supplies. Some people don’t have certain products in their medicines cabinets, but health experts recommend having the following on hand at all times:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Antibacterial ointment
  • Bandages
  • Calamine lotion for bug bites and minor burns
  • Tweezers
  • A thermometer
  • Activated charcoal
  • Allergy medicines

Foods That Support Your Health

Dietary needs and preferences vary from person to person. Some people may have food sensitivities that others don’t, so a healthy diet for you may be different than it is for someone else. That said, health experts agree on a list of basic food items that you should always have on hand in your pantry to promote better eating habits:

  • Steel cut oats
  • Wild rice
  • Beans (no salt added varieties if purchasing canned varieties)
  • Raw nuts and seeds
  • Raw nut or seed butters
  • Coconut oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin olive oil
  • Balsamic vinegar and raw apple cider vinegar
  • Natural sugars, including grade A maple syrup, stevia, and raw agave nectar
  • Seasoning and dried herbs
  • Frozen fruits and vegetables

Additionally, stock your fridge with fresh fruits and vegetables. We all know that fruits and vegetables are essential for optimal health!

Whether you live in a six-bedroom house or studio apartment, you understand that a home can get dirty in a matter of days. In fact, it’s impressive how quickly dust, stains, or general grime starts to accumulate. It’s up to you to take action and keep the home clean. So what do you do? You go straight for the high-touch surfaces and make sure that they pristine. That is an excellent start, but there are so many neglected areas of the home that require cleaning.

Spring cleaning has become a trendy movement, and people tend to go into somewhat of a frenzy. Some people decide that a furniture move is important or that getting rid of junk is the primary goal. Others seem to do a general once-over of the counters, fridge, floors, and carpets. This is wonderful, but spring cleaning is the perfect time to address those areas of the home that often go unnoticed. We are talking about every nook and cranny in the home. That means under the couch, the backsplash behind the stove, and the other parts of the home in this article.

Remember, good health starts with a clean home. Start the spring season on a healthy note by including the following neglected areas in your cleaning routine.

Base Of Toilets

When is the last time you cleaned the base of your toilet? Chances are that you neglect the base when you clean the seat and the bowl. If you don’t clean it, urine can accumulate, especially in a home with children. Leaving urine at the base of the toilet can harbor germs, while the moisture can increase the risk of mold, which can cause respiratory problems. Use an antibacterial cleaning agent to scrub the base of the toilet so that the porcelain sparkles.

Under The Couch

Unless you have a robot vacuum, chances are that you aren’t cleaning under the couch. Even the robot doesn’t get every square inch under there! Spring is here, which means that you need to move the couch, bed, or other furniture item and get in there. You may need a vacuum and a mop to complete the task. It’s not the most difficult thing to do, but it can be annoying. Get those spots clean once and for all, but don’t continue to neglect them from now on.

Rugs

Area rugs can accumulate a lot of dirt, dust, and more, especially if they are in high-traffic areas. If you have pets, their hair doesn’t come off with each vacuuming session either. For small rugs that are machine washable, read the directions and toss them in the washer. For larger rugs, you may need a separate piece of machinery or plan of attack to deep clean them. Check the material of the rug and research how to wash it before you just go for it. The last thing you want to do is ruin a rug and have to buy a new one.

Windowsills

It’s common to see dust on windowsills, but mold can easily grow in these areas. Unfortunately, many homeowners or renters don’t consider this when it comes to cleaning. Mold spores are very small, discolored areas on the windowsills. If you don’t regularly clean them, it’s possible to damage your windows and indoor air quality. People with mold allergies or respiratory conditions have a higher risk of experiencing symptoms in regards to mold accumulation. It’s best to clean mold and condensation from windowsills with bleach diluted with water. Be sure to wear protective gloves and a mask.

The Curtains

Sure, curtains help to keep out the sunlight and the rest of the world from looking in, but they are dust traps. You could make the argument that a curtain’s sole purpose is to collect dust. Most people don’t realize how dusty they are until they give them a quick shake and see the dust linger in the sunlight. Depending on the type of curtains you have, you may want to have a professional do the job. Some curtains, however, are machine washable and you can clean them yourself.

HVAC Filters

If you have central ventilation, heating, or an air-conditioning system in your home, you should change the filter regularly. Most filters should be changed every three months, so be sure to check if you are overdue. Filters work to catch particles that affect indoor air quality, including animal allergens, mold spores, and pollen. If you don’t change your filters, they can fill up and become less effective.

Winter is almost a distant memory that fades more and more with the arrival of warmer temperatures and blooming flowers. The fresher air makes you want to open the windows and invite the beautiful scents and warmth into the home. Even though it may look fresh and less gloomy outside, the inside of your home may be in shambles. Invite the opportunity and seasonal change into your life with a cleaner home. In fact, this is a long-standing tradition in many cultures.

Why Do People Deep Clean In Spring?

Spring cleaning stems from several cultures, including Iranian, Chinese, and Jewish. The arrival of the spring equinox on the solar-based calendar is a classic indicator of spring. For Iranians, the spring equinox marks the new year, which consists of festivals and celebrations that symbolize a time of renewal. This theme of “renewal” is common in many cultures, in regards to the new year. It’s a chance to reinvigorate life and start anew. In the two weeks leading up to the new year, Iranians practice “shaking the house.” This involves buying new clothes, getting rid of old clothes, cleaning everything in sight, and ensuring everything in the house is clean for the new year.

In similar fashion, the Chinese clean their homes in anticipation of the new year’s arrival. The belief is that cleaning the house gets rid of any possible bad luck, inviting positive energy into the house when the new year comes. In Jewish culture, Passover commemorates the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. Jewish slaves ate unleavened bread, which they adopted as a reminder of overcoming such hard times. In traditional Jewish culture, keeping leavened bread in the house during Passover is an insult to God. It has become tradition to scour the home for any possible crumbs, cleaning it meticulously before Passover, which comes right after spring.

While your motivation to clean may not be cultural, there are serious health benefits to deep cleaning the home. Continue reading to learn how spring cleaning can improve your health

Reduces The Presence Of Allergens

When you clean the home, your indoor air quality is likely to improve. Clutter, mess, and neglecting to regularly clean results in an accumulation of dust. There are chemicals in dust that trigger allergic reactions, so cleaning the home can reduce the presence of harmful allergens. The home is insulated without opening the windows all winter, so the cleaning and fresh spring air can improve breathing and overall respiratory health.

Encourages A Healthy Lifestyle

When you inhabit a messy space, there’s a higher percentage of being unhealthier. Statistically, people who clean up their houses tend to clean up other areas of their lives. This can lead to better sleep, healthier eating habits, and improved sleep. There’s a link between decluttering, organizing, and cleaning the home and prioritizing your health and overall well-being. You may be surprised how much a good cleaning session inspires you.

Reduces Stress

Some people will argue that a messy house inspires the chaotic freedom that inspires their creative thoughts. There’s not time for that nonsense. The act of cleaning and inviting organization into your life helps to relieve stress. A messy house can cause stress because you can easily misplace things or purchase things that you already have, but are hiding in the mess. Clutter in the home can also lead to higher anxiety, and cleaning it all up brings about a calmer feeling

Less Mess = Less Fatigue

You may not know it until your home is organized and clean, but clutter wears you down. It’s exhausting to have anything and everything occupy your space, be it your workspace or living space. All of the disorganization gathers dust and grime. Take the time to shed the non-essential items in your life. You don’t have to purge your house, but a solid spring cleaning can lift an incredible weight off your shoulders and help you feel lighter, emotionally speaking. Less brings about more happiness, more energy, and more positivity in your life.

Increases Productivity

The warmer weather often excites people and inspires them to get more done in each day. Shorter days tend to have the opposite effect on people, hence why there is more clutter and dirt in the home during winter. You may notice that you feel the urge to clean as spring gets closer and closer. Now, we don’t advise cleaning the house in a single day because that is exhausting. Take at least one to two weeks to spring clean the entire house, tackling a room or problem area every day.

After COVID-19 vaccines rolled out, a lot of families said “so long” to Zoom and FaceTime and resumed in-person holiday celebrations. It was a relief to see people again and resume what seemed like a pre-pandemic lifestyle. Even with vaccinations and boosters, the virus continued to infect people, which was evident in the 2021 winter surge of COVID-19 cases. With COVID on the retreat, though, it seems that this holiday season is much safer than the previous two.

Most people don’t even factor COVID-19 into the equation anymore. Some people don’t even acknowledge it as a threat, while others remain cautious and want to do everything they can to stay safe. Regardless of whether people wear masks or don’t, get vaccinated or not, there seems to be conflicting public health guidance about precautions. This can unsettle anyone and people may not be sure of how they want to celebrate during the holidays.

How many parties should you attend? What are the “rules of the game” at your Friendsgiving? Are there things you should do to avoid a COVID-19-giving at your Thanksgiving? Infectious disease experts say that it is good to take a cautious approach to holiday gatherings. You cannot predict how COVID will unfold, but you can do your part to stay safe, especially if you have family or loved ones that are more susceptible to serious infection. If you want to keep yourself and others safe during holiday gatherings, consider employing the following strategies.

Stay Home If You Have Symptoms

This holds true whether or not you have COVID-19, flu, or RSV symptoms. Since the top symptoms of COVID-19 have changed, you may want to click here for that information. If you have a runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, or fever, it is best to stay home until you feel better, even if you test negative for COVID-19. Viruses like the flu and RSV can seriously affect small children, pregnant women, and older or more vulnerable people. If you have any upper respiratory illness, you should not be at a gathering, according to infectious disease specialists. A lot of symptoms may seem innocuous, but that isn’t always the case.

Exercise Caution Leading Up To The Gathering

In the 10 days or week preceding your holiday gathering, health experts recommend that you take precautions. That includes minimizing contact with people outside your household. Keep an eye on the data in your area and observe any public health reports or warnings. COVID-19 continues to hospitalize and kill people, indicating that the virus continues to spread, even if the sickness is more mild for a lot of people now. Double-check that nobody has symptoms or has not been exposed before your gathering. It’s a great idea to take a COVID-19 test as another safety precaution.

Stay Safe During Travel

Masks aren’t required for most travel these days, but that tends to depend on the airline, or the country you’re visiting. In general, air quality on planes is better than it is on buses or trains. Although your chances of getting sick in the sky are fairly low, it can be beneficial to mask up, especially while you are in the airport. Additionally, you may want to keep your mask on while the plane taxies to the runway. The reason for this is because filtration systems may not turn on  when the plane is grounded. And if you travel by train or bus, consider masking up for the duration of the journey.

Ventilate Your Party Space

Open a window or two, and maybe even a door, to invite fresh air into your holiday gathering. Improving ventilation, so long as weather permits, can help prevent virus particles from accumulating in a space. You don’t have to invest in a fancy air filter, as there isn’t much data that suggests high-tech options are better than natural ventilation. Don’t have a great cross-breeze? Place a fan next to an open window and have it oscillate to move air around the room. If your place has an air-conditioning (HVAC) system, you can reduce viral transmission by setting the fan to the “on” position, as opposed to “auto” when you have people over.

Don’t Forget About Other Viruses

COVID-19 has been the reigning champ of viruses for the last few years, but influenza and RSV are sickening a lot of people right now. Infectious disease experts explain that that’s all the more reason to take precautions this holiday season. Do your best to avoid high-risk settings, such as indoor crowded events, especially the week before your holiday gatherings. In addition to avoiding crowds, take care of your health by eating healthy foods. Consider amping up your immune system with an all-natural vitamin C supplement, get a lot of sleep, and do your best to get in 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

As the leaves fall and the rain arrives, you have to worry about the possible clogging of gutters around the home. It is a pain to get on a ladder and clean them, but health experts point out that this chore may be integral to your overall health. That’s right, folks, your health is not only dependent on what’s inside your home, but what’s outside as well.

The main purpose of gutters is to divert rainwater away from your house. The gutters funnel it down downspouts and onto the ground. The falling leaves or debris from trees can accumulate in gutters and cause blockages. If water cannot flow out the downspouts, then it can seep into your home and begin the molding process. Not only does this ruin indoor air quality, but it also increases the risk of allergies and poor respiratory health

Because gutters help defend your home against water damage, it is your responsibility to make sure they are clean. Removing leaves and other debris can make it so that rainwater drains efficiently and keeps your home safe from leaks. The last thing you want is for clogged gutters to cause moisture build-up inside your home.

Why Is Mold Bad?

Besides the fact that it is disgusting to look at, mold can irritate the respiratory system and worsen lung or breathing problems. Even if you aren’t allergic to mold, you can still develop allergy-like symptoms when exposed to it. The most common reactions to mold include itchy eyes, stuffy nose, wheezing, or irritated skin after inhalation. Reactions can be more serious for people with pre-existing respiratory conditions, including emphysema, COPD, asthma, or those with mold allergies. Common reactions for that group after mold exposure include shortness of breath, chest tightness, respiratory infections, and intense coughing. In some cases, mold may trigger the onset of new health issues. Inhaling or touching mold spores may also cause someone to become allergic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Link Between Clogged Gutters And Mold Growth

First off, blocked or clogged gutters can create unnecessary strain on the gutters, putting them at risk for falling. Cleaning them two to three times per year is a great practice, but you may need to do it more often in the fall and winter, depending on where you live. Clogged gutters also invite dangerous pests to reside in them. Wasps, specifically, can build very large nests in clogged gutters and become a serious hazard quickly.

In regards to your health, though, clogged gutters can hold the combination of stagnant water, decaying matter, and debris. When the sun cooks these three, it essentially bakes mildew and increases the risk for other disease-ridden residues. When mold seeps into the siding of your home, it can collect inside your interior. Not only does this cause respiratory problems, but it can also damage your home’s foundation. Plus, any moisture build-up leads to quicker mold growth! Because you spend a significant amount of time in your home, you want to make sure it is as healthy as it can be. Follow the tips below to avoid clogged gutters!

How To Clean Your Gutters

Keep water and mold growth out of your home by clearing debris and leaves from your gutters. There are a few rules you can follow to have the cleanest gutters ever:

  • Always check your gutters every one to two months for debris build-up. You may be able to get away with doing it less often, but this depends on where you live. It also depends if you have gutter guards, which can be very beneficial if you live near a lot of trees.
  • You’ll need a ladder, tarp, and heavy-duty rubber gloves. Spread out the tarp before you head up the ladder. Make sure that the tarp covers the area under the ladder, so that it catches whatever debris you toss down. Things will get messy, so make sure you put on the rubber gloves.
  • Remove all leaves, sticks, dirt, and other debris you see from the gutters and pull it out by hand. Toss it down onto the tarp and don’t try to push it down the downspout.
  • Once you remove the majority of the clutter, use a garden hose to spray away any small leftover pieces.

Sure, you can reap the benefits of plants by eating them, but keeping houseplants can also positively affect your health. Houseplants have been having a moment for quite some time, especially during the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic. There was nothing to do except beautify the home, which was great since most people remained inside for months. Plus, taking care of houseplants really provided a nice distraction from the uncertainty of life.

Houseplants do more than make a home aesthetically pleasing. Taking care of a plant helps to promote a sense of calm, reducing stress in the process. In fact, a small study found that nurturing a plant and watching it grow helped reduce stress levels and anxiety. Some people refer to plant caring as horticulture therapy. Nurturing a living thing is a meditative practice, and some psychologists say that it is a great form of self-care

Diet and exercise contribute to a healthy body and mind, but houseplants also play a role in this process. In addition to reducing stress levels, they help to improve indoor air quality, which impacts overall health. Breathing better quality air may improve sleep, reduce stress levels, improve mood, and make breathing easier. Continue reading to learn which houseplants benefit your health

Rubber Plant

There have been several studies documenting the impact of plants in the Ficus genus on overall health. A 2017 study, which was published in Environmental Health and Toxicology journal, placed plants like the rubber plant in a new building. This was different than the 1989 NASA study, which researchers conducted in a lab. In the 2017 study, researchers concluded that the rubber plant, and other Ficus genus plants, were more effective at removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

Bromeliads

Growing best in bright, sunny spaces, bromeliads have a reputation for withstanding drought. For this reason, you have to be careful not to over-water them. Several studies found that bromeliads can absorb up to 90% of benzene in the air. Indoor air tends to contain more benzene than outdoor air. Glue, paint, furniture wax, and detergents emit it into the air, so bromeliads may help to keep your airways safe.

Fern

A fern is a lush and bountiful plant that exhibits air-purifying properties. Boston ferns work to remove smoke and compounds like formaldehyde and plastics from the air. The leaves absorb these toxic compounds and turn them into materials that the plant uses for its own well-being. Boston ferns are typically easy to care for and will give your home some great forest vibes.

Peace Lilies

Belonging to the Spathiphyllum genus, peace lilies are suitable for the rookie gardener or houseplant enthusiast. If you are nervous about keeping a houseplant alive but still want to get one, get yourself some peace lilies. According to a 2021 study, peace lilies help to remove CO2 and formaldehyde from the air. Earlier studies suggest that they may be able to reduce the total amount of VOCs in the air. It’s best to keep them out of the reach of pets and children because peace lilies contain calcium oxalate, which can irritate the stomach or respiratory tract if consumed in large amounts.

Golden Pothos

If you’re looking for another easy plant to care for, the golden pothos is for you. The vines produce heart-shaped leaves, and it just so happens that this plant helps to purify the air. According to a 2017 study, golden pothos works to reduce indoor ozone levels. Previous research found that, similar to to the peace lily, golden pothos has the ability to remove VOCs from the air.

Lavender

With silver foliage, vibrant purple flowers and an enchanting, soothing aroma, lavender is a staple household herb for kitchen or herb gardens. If you don’t want to use it for culinary purposes, it makes a great houseplant. The aroma may help to alleviate tension and promote a sense of calm. Lavender’s scent has been known to promote better sleep, so having it in your bedroom may be the way to naturally lull yourself to sleep. Make sure it gets ample sunlight and only water when the soil is dry.

While every season has unique and specific scents, the enchanting aromas of fall and winter are the best ones. Be it a simmering pot of cider, homemade apple pie, pumpkin spice beverages, or cinnamon-scented candles, it’s safe to say the holidays smell amazing. Did you know that you can invite that signature cinnamon spice into your home without purchasing candles or air fresheners? All you have to do is make the cinnamon spice candles in this article.

Candles are great for numerous occasions and make practical home decor items. It’s also useful to have them if you ever experience a blackout. And while it’s easy to purchase candles in store, they can often be quite pricey and filled with chemicals, many of which are harmful to your respiratory system. Candle making is also a great way to save money on gifts if you are trying to have a budget-friendly holiday season. You can decorate the jars/glasses, in which the candle goes, and gift them to friends, family members, and coworkers alike.

Why Are Natural Candles Better?

They Produce Less Soot

If you are a regular candle lighter, you may have noticed that a lot of soot accumulates around the inside of the glass. This is because chemical-rich candles don’t burn as clean as natural candles do. Because of this, you won’t see black soot gather on the candle or surfaces near where you light it.

No Unsavory Chemicals

Paraffin wax is the predominant wax that manufacturers use to make candles. It is derived from petroleum and can contain carcinogens, numerous toxins, and air pollutants. Organic waxes like beeswax or soy wax can help you avoid exposure to harmful chemicals. Additionally, wicks made from cotton, wood, or hemp are better options than metal-cored wicks, which release toxins as they burn.

They Burn Longer

Unlike paraffin wax, natural waxes have a lower melting point, meaning they last longer. This means that your candles will last longer, so you can enjoy them for longer. They are also eco-friendly and have a more pleasant aroma when they burn. So you won’t get tired of the scent due to the longer lifespan.

DIY Cinnamon Spice Candles

Ingredients:

  • Mason jars or container of choice
  • Smokeless candle wicks
  • Flaked soy wax
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground clove

Instructions:

  • You have to start by melting your wax. If you want to fill a standard pint Mason jar, you’ll need 2 cups of melted wax.
  • Start by adding one cup of soy wax flakes to a heat-safe glass measuring cup and microwave for two minutes. Continue microwaving for one-minute intervals until fully melted.
  • Add another cup of wax and continue to microwave in one-minute intervals until it’s all thoroughly melted. If you prefer to melt the wax in a double boiler, you can do it that way as well.
  • While the wax is melting, wrap the end of a candle wick around the middle of a wooden skewer or pencil and balance the skewer on the top of the jar.
  • The bottom of the wick should be resting at the bottom of the jar.
  • When the wax is complete melted, add in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and clove and mix well.
  • Hold the skewer with the wick and slowly pour the wax into the jar. If you see any air bubbles on the sides of the jar, use a separate wooden skewer to rub the inside of the jar to release them to the top. You can leave them be if you want. It’s simply a matter of aesthetic appeal.
  • Allow four to five hours for the candle to complete set.
  • Light it up and enjoy!
