Do you ever open your drawers or closet and have to step away because of an unpleasant aroma? Your first instinct is to grab the air freshener and liberally spray it all over the culprit area. Not only do air fresheners temporarily mask the scent, but they also pollute your space with harmful chemicals. That is why it’s much safer and more effective to use the all-natural air freshener jars in this article.

The Problem With Commercial Air Fresheners

The problem with many commercial air deodorizers or air fresheners is the long list of toxins. Chemicals in these products, specifically the phthalates, and formaldehyde, can cause rashes, dizziness, headaches, and throat irritation. These chemical compounds are also known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to several studies, exposure to VOCs can cause adverse health effects, including loss of coordination, liver damage, and damage to the central nervous system. Researchers identified some VOCs as suspected or proven carcinogens. Long-term exposure to VOCs can also increase the risk of asthma and certain types of cancer.

Formaldehyde, for example, is a common ingredient in many household air fresheners and cleaners. You can also find it in home furnishings, household paints, and certain textiles. That makes formaldehyde very difficult to avoid, but limiting your exposure is an important first step. Unfortunately, phthalates are also problematic VOCs that are in a lot of air freshening products. Phthalates help distribute fragrances, but they also can disrupt the body’s hormone levels, which can affect your overall health and well-being.

The said reality is that products that have “all-natural” on the label can still contain VOCs. Homemade air freshening products, on the other hand, give you full control over what goes into them. We detail the ingredients for the air freshener jars below.

Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, is a staple in the non-toxic cleaning world. It is mildly abrasive, eco-friendly, affordable, and great for getting rid of built-up grime. Baking soda is known for its ability to absorb and neutralize unpleasant odors. The “why” behind baking soda’s ability to do this has to do with chemistry. Most smells are acidic in nature, and baking soda works to neutralize pH levels. To put it simply, baking soda’s basic pH is perfect for neutralizing acids that cause foul odors.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil’s aroma is very relaxing and studies show that it can promote better sleep. Various studies also confirmed that lavender has a soothing effect that can reduce stress levels. Another benefit of lavender is that it has properties that may be able to repel certain insects, particularly moths, making it great for closets, dresser drawers, and line closets. You can use both dried lavender and lavender essential oil to maximize the effects of lavender, and make the scent last longer.

Eucalyptus

Similar to baking soda, eucalyptus has an ability to neutralize foul odors in the home. A simple sprig of eucalyptus is enough to create a pleasant aroma in a room. Eucalyptus essential oil is even more powerful, as it is distilled from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. It exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, which may help combat certain chemicals in the air. Finally, eucalyptus essential oil acts as a natural decongestant when you inhale it, making it great for your home. Who doesn’t want to breathe better when they walk into a room?!

DIY Air Freshener Jars

Ingredients:

 • 2 cups baking soda
 • 1/2 cup dried lavender buds
 • Sprigs of eucalyptus (optional)
 • 20 drops lavender essential oil
 • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Instructions:

 • Pour the baking soda into a large bowl and add the dried lavender and optional eucalyptus leaves. Mix well to combine.
 • Add in the essential oils and continue to mix before transferring the mixture into small, wide-mouth mason jars.
 • Use your mason jar lid insert as a guide to trace and cut a circular piece of brown paper bag. Any type of paper will work for this step, for example, wrapping paper or card stock.
 • Using a needle, poke holes into the circular pieces of paper, making sure that you do it over a carpet or towel to protect your counter or desk.
 • Place the circular pieces of paper on the tops of your mason jars and screw on the lids to secure the paper. The tiny holes allow the wonderful aromas to freshen up your space.

The New Year is synonymous with weight loss, dieting, and new career goals. People often put so much emphasis on themselves that they don’t pay attention to their homes. Unlike the human body, the home is not something that can clean itself. You are responsible for limiting the build-up of grime and keeping it a space for wellness by maintaining awareness.

There are many ways to establish a healthy home, but with the New Year approaching, one of the best ways to clean the slate is through a home detox. Over time, the home can easily accumulate dust, allergen, mold, and germs. Not only can these things cause allergic reactions, but they can also weigh down the energy in your home. If you are into the concept of Feng Shui, then you understand how simple detox tips can spruce up your indoor space. Below, we detail simple ways that you can detox your home for a fresh start in the New Year.

Shoes Stay At The Door

When you walk in the front door of your home, remove your shoes, plain and simple. When you wear your shoes inside the house, you track pesticides, bacteria, and more via the soles of your shoes. Removing your shoes prior to entering your home also supports the idea that your home is a sacred space, separate from the outside world. Wear socks, go barefoot, or have slippers for chilly days.

Use Green Plants As Natural Detox Agents

Certain houseplants have the ability to remove pollutants from the air, ultimately improving indoor air quality. Some studies found that houseplants can remove substances like benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. Breathing easier is much easier when the air in your home is cleaner. Click here for the best houseplants to clean your air.

Open Your Windows When You Cook

Cooking over a gas flame can generate large amounts of nitrogen dioxide and other tiny particles that can irritate the nose and lungs. In addition to using the exhaust hood or range, open your windows to ventilate your space. This process helps remove particular gasses from your home, reducing the risk of future headaches or fatigue from inhaling those pollutants.

Bye Bye Dryer Sheets

Not all dryer sheets are bad, but they aren’t necessarily eco-friendly. Instead of contributing to more waste, do your part to help the environment and opt for wool dryer balls. These dryer balls are chemical-free and help soften your laundry during the drying process. Wool dryer balls tend to last up to 1,000 loads, which is 1,000 less dryer sheets in landfills. They also reduce drying time, which can lower your energy usage.

Use Simple DIY Cleaning Products

There are many non-toxic cleaning products that you can purchase in store, but a lot of them still contain synthetic fragrances, colors, and other preservatives. If you are trying to detox your home, you don’t want to continue polluting it. You can easily make your own cleaning products that are 100% non-toxic. We have a large catalog of these recipes on our website, but you can click here to view some great ones to have on hand.

From Floor To Ceilings

When you vacuum, it’s best to use one that has a HEPA filter, as that not only helps decrease allergens in the home, but also creates a healthier, more breathable space. The HEPA filter in your vacuum traps bacteria, dust, pathogens, and particles. Additionally, it also reduces the levels of many chemicals in your home. Don’t just vacuum your carpets or rugs, though. Vacuum under your furniture, behind bookshelves, on the side of your washer, and the corners of your house.

Ditch Synthetic Air Fresheners

We cannot stress the importance of this point! A lot of people love the scents of synthetic air freshener sprays or plug-ins, but these products are filled with irritants and chemicals. You can still create a pleasant smelling home without these chemicals. There are essential oil diffusers, bouquets of fresh flowers, potpourri, and more. You can also make all-natural air freshener sprays by clicking here

Even the simplest of home detox efforts can improve the entire energy of your home. Do whatever you feel is best and simplest on this list to begin your home detox. Relish in the results you feel when the new year arrives!

Have you stopped purchasing scented plug-ins, candles, and air fresheners yet? If you haven’t done so yet, then it’s time to leave them behind. Almost all of those products contain toxic chemicals, some of which are known endocrine system disruptors. The average person isn’t aware of those chemicals because manufacturers don’t have to disclose the ingredients in signature fragrances. If you see “fragrance” on the ingredient list, please understand that there are many harmful chemicals that go into making those blends.

In case you didn’t know, some artificial fragrances disperse particles of phthalates and formaldehyde into the air. Phthalates are small particles of plastic that bind fragrance molecules together. You can easily breathe them in, whereby they get into your nose and lungs. In addition to those chemicals, the term “artificial fragrance” accounts for more than 3,000 chemicals. The reason that companies don’t have to disclose them is because they are signature, copyrighted blends. So there is no real way of knowing what is in an air freshener, unless you make your own.

This article provides you with recipes for 10 holiday-themed air freshener sprays. You will need a good collection of essential oils in order to make them. When you purchase these essential oils, make sure to purchase 100% pure essential oils from reputable companies with good reviews. Many of the essential oils in these air freshener sprays contain properties that may help combat toxins in the air, helping to purify the space. Now, let’s get started on those recipes!

The Supplies

You will need various essential oils, dark glass spray bottles (preferably brown amber glass bottles), water, some sea salt or Epsom salt, and distilled water. In order to use these air fresheners, simply spray them into the air. If your essential oils are clear and not colored, you can spray them on linens or upholstery.

 • Distilled water

Instructions:

 • Screw on the top, shake the bottle to combine, and spray when ready.

When you gotta go, you gotta go, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave a horrid stench behind in the bathroom. If you have guests over at your house or need to conceal the smell at the office bathroom, there is an easy solution to the problem. There’s no need for aromatic candles or air fresheners, both of which contain harmful chemicals that worsen indoor air quality. You just need a couple essential oils!

The odor eliminator sprays to get rid of the smell of poo are very popular nowadays. There are funny commercials that say a few spritzes in the toilet bowl before you do the deed will mask the smell. These sprays contain dozens of essential oils and other ingredients. Plus, they cost a pretty penny for how easy they are to make.

A Quick Note

The reason we don’t recommend air fresheners is because they don’t work. The bathroom ends up smelling like a horrible combination of poop and whatever the air freshener scent is. That’s not the main reason we discourage people from using air fresheners, though. Air fresheners emit hazardous pollutants that you can inhale and absorb into the bloodstream. From a health standpoint, the use of air fresheners has been linked to asthma attacks, infant illness, migraine headaches, and breathing difficulties. Click here to learn more about that.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil offers a refreshing, clean citrus scent that serves as a natural deodorizer. In the world of essential oils, it’s praised for the purifying properties. Lemon essential oil works to naturally eliminate strong aromas from foul trashcans, cigarette smoke, and smelly shoes. If any stale or musty aromas linger in the air, you can count on lemon essential oil to eliminate them. The limonene content works to extract odors from the air and neutralize them. This helps to leave the room smelling clean and fresh.

Lavender Essential Oil

Some people get a little obsessive about lavender essential oil, but we understand why. It’s absolutely amazing! It has calming properties that can promote healthier sleep, but it also works as a great odor eliminator. If you want to banish bad odors from the bathroom, lavender essential oil can help. Skip the chemical aerosol sprays and let lavender essential oil permeate the bathroom. It has natural deodorizing properties that not only make the bathroom smell good, but also create a calmer atmosphere.

DIY Bathroom Spray

Ingredients:

 • 4 ounces distilled water
 • 20 drops lemon essential oil
 • 20 drops lavender essential oil
 • 4-ounce amber glass spray bottle

Instructions:

 • Add all of the ingredients to the amber glass spray bottle. Make sure to add the oils first!
 • The reason you use an amber spray bottle, or dark-colored glass bottle, is because it helps the essential oils stay fresh for a lot longer.
 • Shake the bottle and then it is ready to go. You will have to shake it up before each use.
 • Spray about 3-4 times on the surface of the toilet water before you do your business.

]]>

Burning sage is a traditional practice in Native American culture. With metaphysical practices and new age energy theories in place, it’s hard to know if burning sage, or smudging, is beneficial or not. Some people consider smudging to be a trend, an alternative practice that has no history, science, or meaning behind it. To each his own, but there are many benefits of misting or burning sage in your home.

Historical Use

Before your hippie aunt introduced you to burning sage, a practice she picked up in the 1960s, the Native Americans burned sage in Southwestern United States. Native American tribes typically burned white sage in purification rituals for centuries. In more recent years, sage has become the go-to plant for cleansing a space of negative energy. The theory is that it helps to expel bad vibes and create a more harmonious, calm space.

Does Smudging Really Work?

People belong to two camps when it comes to smudging: those who believe and those who don’t. Your belief is yours and we can’t take that away from you, but maybe we can shed some light on the benefits of smudging. According to a 2007 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacol, burning sage helped reduce bacteria in the air. In addition to refreshing your energy and spirit, sage also helps to purify and cleanse the air. Additionally, sage is an effective antibacterial agent, so it works to reduce the effects of pollen, mold, or dust in the home. This is great for anyone who suffers from allergies

What Is Sage Spray?

This is obviously not the same thing as burning a bundle of dried sage. The recipe in this article is a more modern way of smudging, harnessing the cleansing powers of sage without leaving a trail of smoke throughout your home. Sage spray is excellent for people with respiratory problems, or those who are sensitive to smoke. Using sage leaves or sage essential oil, you spritz the sage spray around the home, or in a specific room, to cleanse the space. After you spray your home, you may find that you help to improve mental clarity and improve intention.

When Should You Sage?

Is there a “best time” to sage your home? Some argue that there’s never a bad time to do it. The most common time for smudging is when you move into a new space, be it a home or office. The idea behind this is to clear the previous inhabitant’s energy from the space, allowing you to set your own intention for your new space. Sometimes people want to reset the energy in their homes, or they simply want to promote calm and relaxation. For these reasons, smudging can be done at any time. Lastly, it’s very beneficial to smudge a space after the loss of a loved one.

DIY Sage Spray

Ingredients:

 • 1 bunch fresh sage leaves
 • 1 cup hot water
 • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
 • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
 • 1 glass spray bottle (with a capacity of 2 cups)

Instructions:

 • Break up the sage leaves to release their essential oils, and then add them to the glass spray bottle.
 • Pour the hot water (not boiling) into the glass bottle with the sage leaves.
 • Add the vinegar and salt to the bottle and store the bottle in a cool, dark place for at least 12 hours.
 • After this waiting/steeping period, the spray is ready to use. Spritz around your home as you please.
 • The sage leaves will turn brown after a day or so, but don’t worry because this is completely natural. It means the plant is breaking down in the vinegar.

Now more than ever, over-sanitation is too common in the household. We house an assortment of cleaning products beneath the sink, in either the kitchen or bathroom. People bleach the counters or high-touch surfaces, and they wipe the floors until they are shiny and spotless. The important thing to remember is that people do these things to keep themselves safe. As it turns out, they may do more harm than good for the body.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), upwards of 2,000 cleaning supplies on the American market contain chemicals that can lead to serious health problems. Fumes from some products lead to respiratory distress, while carcinogenic compounds in others increase cancer risk. Parents who over-sanitize the house can cause their children to grow up to develop serious respiratory problems like asthma. One study even found that inhaling chemicals from cleaning products has a similar damaging effect that cigarettes have on the lungs. Pregnant women who clean with chemical products may even increase the risk of birth defects.

Are People Not Informed About These Risks?

Despite all of this information, cleaning products still make it onto U.S. shelves. Manufactures are not required to list all the ingredients in these cleaning products. Additionally, don’t assume that “green” cleaning products are 100% safe for you. They can still contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), fragrances, and other irritants. That’s why it’s always best to do your research on the safest cleaning products for your health. The Environmental Protection Agency has a list of cleaning products that are safer and healthier for cleaning needs.

Home Cleaning Products Study

The University of Bergen in Norway conducted a 20-year study on home cleaning products. The study monitored 6,230 participants between the ages of 20 and 44. Each participant had up to three lung tests during the duration of the study. The study divided the participants into three categories: people who cleaned at least once a week, people who didn’t clean, and people who cleaned as a profession. The results indicated that women who cleaned once a week experienced reduced lung function. They also experienced an increase in asthma. Women who cleaned as a profession saw a decline in lung function that mimicked the effects of smoking half a pack of cigarettes per day. Men in the study had similar effects.

While the takeaway from that study seems like cleaning products only affect lung function, this is not the case. They contain chemicals that can disrupt the endocrine system, which contains the glands that regulate hormones. Disrupting this system can lead to hormonal imbalance that can affect the body’s natural messaging system. Additionally, the chemicals can block hormone function, or mimic hormone function. Either way, they disrupt hormones and cause distress, confusion, or even nutritional deficiencies in the body. Some other problems that household cleaners cause include:

 • Birth defects
 • Hypothyroidism
 • Infertility
 • Skin disorders
 • Allergies
 • Respiratory issues
 • Diabetes
 • Inflammation
 • Nerve damage
 • Increased cancer risk
 • Eye irritation

Can You Avoid These Problems?

Chemical cleaning products are convenient. People know them because they regularly see them in the stores and in commercials. The best thing you can do to keep yourself protected is to read the labels and reports on the products before purchasing them. Opt for products that do not contain fragrances, flammable ingredients, irritants, or VOCs. Additionally, don’t buy air fresheners

A safe cleaning alternative to major household cleaning products is soap and warm water. This is great for cleaning the home. Lastly, baking soda is excellent for scrubbing away grime. You can also use distilled white vinegar and water to clean glass surfaces. When you clean, be it with natural or chemical cleaning products, make sure to keep the home well ventilated. Open the windows so that fresh air can come in and the chemicals can go out.

The air freshener market is an enormous beast that seduces you with its enchanting aromas. From candles and plug-in devices to sprays and gels, air fresheners plague you everywhere you go. Businesses have sprays in restrooms, friends have freshening candles in their living rooms, and you may even have plug-ins in your house. Some scents are attractive and others aren’t, but no matter what the scent of the air freshener is, it pollutes your indoor air.

Air Fresheners At A Glance

They seem nice to the untrained nose, but we’re about to drop some knowledge on you. Air fresheners are one of the primary sources of indoor air pollution because they emit or cause the formation of substances that have been linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, and endocrine disruption. It’s unfortunate because companies can label their air fresheners with “all-natural” or “green” words to attract customers, despite the fact that they are far from natural. Fragrances are trademarked blends, and companies are not required to put the ingredients in those blends on ingredient labels.

What Is Indoor Air Pollution?

Yes, the air in your home is not as safe as you thought. It may not be as poor as the air outside, which is replete with environmental pollutants and airborne toxins. While the air in your home may not be as healthy as you think it is, you have complete control over how fresh your indoor air is. Air fresheners, cooking oils, cleaning products, and building materials dictate the quality of indoor air. If you use air fresheners, a quick and easy way to improve indoor air quality is by throwing them out. Get them out of your house!

When you don’t have the constant presence of fragrances in your house, you may notice that you experience better respiratory function. The fragrances from air freshener gels, sprays, or plug-ins contain contain the following harmful pollutants:

 • Parabens: which can increase the risk of breast cancer.
 • Toluene: which scientists have linked to reproductive and developmental toxicity.
 • 1,4-Diclorobenzene (1,4 DB): a volatile organic compound that can negatively affect lung function, especially in people with asthma or respiratory illnesses.
 • Xylene: linked to symptoms such as headaches, depression, dizziness, short-term memory impairment, and central nervous system depression.
 • d-Limonene: is a sensitizer, which can increase the odds of future allergic reactions. It may also irritate the eyes and skin.
 • Phthalates: linked to damaging the female reproductive system and increasing the risk of birth defects. It may also contribute to endocrine disruption.
 • Benzene: a harmful carcinogen that is toxic to reproductive and developmental health.

Making Your Own Air Freshener

You don’t need to subject your respiratory system to harmful fragrances that contain volatile compounds because it’s easy to make your own air freshener. It sounds difficult, but it’s so much easier than you think. All you need is some baking soda, the essential oil of your choice, a glass jar, and a cupcake liner. Perfectly naturally and wonderfully aromatic. Your house will smell as fragrant as ever without harming your air quality.

DIY Air Freshener

Ingredients:

 • 1/4 cup baking soda
 • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil (or whatever essential oil you prefer)

Americans buy air fresheners as if they are going out of style. With more scents and options than ever before, including solid, plug-in, and aerosol varieties, air freshener sales have doubled since 2003. Despite warnings from environmental groups, people continue to buy air fresheners, which contain an array of chemical pollutants that threaten their health.

The National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) conducted a study in 2007 to find out the effects of inhaling these chemical aromas. Across the board, 14 different air fresheners contained chemicals that could cause developmental and reproductive problems. This study helped to highlight the dangers of phthalates, which are chemicals that are used as plastic softeners or to hold fragrances. Even though the dangers of air fresheners were brought to light, they weren’t removed from the market. The only ones that were removed were three of the ones with the highest phthalates levels.

So How Do You Freshen Your Home?

There is an incredibly simple solution to this problem. You can avoid a stale smell in your home by using all-natural, fragrant spices, herbs, and fruit. Not only do these ingredients work to eliminate odors, but they also help you keep chemicals out of your home. To get ideas for different scents to use, we have listed the most fragrant ones below.

Herbs

You can use any herb that you enjoy, but ones that are sturdier on woody twigs last longer (think rosemary and thyme). You can also use sage.

Citrus

Using other fruits is a gamble because they can go bad quickly. Citrus fruits last for a while and they are particularly fragrant, especially lemons and oranges.

Spices

Just open your spice cabinet and see which aromas entice you with their scent. You can use whole spices or ground spices, but whole spices look more aesthetically pleasing. Cinnamon sticks, star anise, or whole cloves are great options.

Pine Or Cedar Needles

If you have pine or cedar trees in your area, grab some needles or twigs and you are good to go. They make your home smell like the wilderness!

How To Make Your Scented Mixtures

The easiest way to make your natural scent combinations is to get a pint-size glass jar and fill it with your desired ingredients. Fill it up with water just to measure and then pour everything into a saucepan over medium-high heat. Once the liquid is boiling, reduce the heat to a low simmer. Make sure to keep an eye on the water because you don’t want it to boil off. After simmering for about 10 minutes, remove from the heat and let it cool before transferring it back to the pint-size jar. You can add more water to fill it to the brim. Set it where you want.

Great Scent Combinations

Scent #1

Orange slices, cinnamon, & cloves. This lasts for a while and you can reheat it to intensify the aromas.

Scent #2

Lemon slices, rosemary sprigs, and alcohol-free vanilla extract. This is refreshing and perfect for the bathroom.

Scent #3

Orange slices, ginger slices, and alcohol-free almond extract. It is sweet smelling and bold!

Scent #4

Pine or cedar twigs, bay leaves, and nutmeg. This is a complex aroma and may take some getting used to, like a fine wine.

Scent #5

Lime slices, thyme sprigs, and alcohol-free vanilla extract. This is a pleasant scent and you can add mint to it to kick it up a notch.

Play around with different ingredients and see which combination you like best.
