An Easy DIY Deodorant That Doesn’t Stink

An Easy DIY Deodorant That Doesn’t Stink

When you think about natural deodorant, you might say to yourself, “Really? That’s gross.” Most people are skeptical of the “natural” part, even though they shouldn’t be. Commercial deodorants, to which people have become accustomed, are filled with harmful chemicals that the body can absorb via the skin. The chemicals can then enter the bloodstream and lymph nodes. What happens then?

Well, since you asked, chemicals like methyl, ethyl, benzyl, propyl, and butyl (all commonly found in most deodorants) are endocrine disrupters, meaning that they can interfere with developmental hormones and the reproductive system. Those aforementioned chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of reproductive toxicity and breast cancer.

How Do You Choose The Right Deodorant For You?

Each person has a different biochemical makeup, which plays a big role in whether a scent will work or not work different people. The biochemistry of one person may work well with a vanilla scent, but this may not be the case for someone else. Some people need a powerful DIY deodorant with potent essential oils. Each person may have to play around with measurements because some people have more sensitive skin than others.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 5 tablespoons arrowroot powder
  • 6 tablespoons shea butter
  • 30-60 drops essential oil (tea tree, frankincense, lavender, and patchouli are great options, but you can use others that you prefer)

Instructions:

  • Mix the baking soda and arrowroot powder together in a large mixing bowl.
  • Using a fork or your hands, work the shea butter into the mixture until it looks like dough. It will seem dry, but it will be good in the end.
  • Add the essential oil drops and continue mixing. You can use a hand mixer on low speed for an easier time.
  • Transfer the mixture to a glass jar that has a lid and store in a cool, dry place.

To Use:

  • Using your fingertips, scoop a small amount of the deodorant out of the jar rub it into your underarm until it is invisible. The body absorbs it quickly and keeps you smelling fresh.
