National Walnut Day is annually observed on May 17th, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Walnuts are one of our favorite foods to eat while cleansing because they are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, copper, manganese, and are a great source of protein. They are quite addicting, which is why it is important to limit your consumption of them. Tree nuts, like walnuts, are typically high in calories, so it is best to add them to salads or only eat them as snacks to avoid weight gain.
Walnuts are the oldest known tree food, dating back to about 10,000 BC. They have been used for their medicinal properties, helping to heal wounds, reduce inflammation, and freshen oral scents (nice way of saying, “cure bad breath”). Walnuts are nutrient-rich and the most common varieties are the English walnut (native to Central Asia) and the Black walnut (native to North America).
The English walnut was introduced to California in the 1700s and now roughly 99% of the nation’s walnuts are grown in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys. When you eat walnuts, remember that raw walnuts are best. Raw walnuts don’t have all the chemicals, artificial flavors, and aren’t processed like most packaged walnuts that are roasted, salted, seasoned, or candied.
