DIY Cucumber Mint Sugar Scrub

DIY Cucumber Mint Sugar Scrub

Sugar scrubs are some of the most popular DIY beauty products. The ingredients are often simple and the scrubs are incredibly easy to make. Some people claim that using sugar scrubs makes their skin feel cleaner and more refreshed than ever. This is because they work to remove dead skin cells and bacteria that build up on the skin, whereby they leave your skin smooth and soft.

When And Why Should You Exfoliate?

Ask any dermatologist and they will tell you that exfoliation is the first stepping stone to healthier skin. Since humans lose about 500 million skin cells per day, dead skin cells can pile up quickly on the skin’s surface. Exfoliating two to three times per week can help clear up the skin, which improves complexion, tone, and reduces any acne or blemishes. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you may need to exfoliate less because certain scrubs can be too abrasive. Generally, exfoliating two to three times per week is safe for the average person’s skin.

Benefits Of Cucumber For The Skin

Cucumbers are naturally rich in water, so incorporating them into your diet can help hydrate the body. Dehydration is a classic culprit of unhealthy or dry skin, so eating your water can help. Now, when it comes to using cucumbers on the skin, they can actually improve your complexion and reduce dark spots. Cucumbers are mildly astringent and they help to cleanse your pores, which may reduce breakouts. The vitamin C in cucumber also helps to stimulate the growth of healthy skin cells. The folate in cucumber can also reduce the premature signs of aging, helping your skin look firmer and rejuvenated.

Peppermint Essential Oil For The Skin

Mint leaves or peppermint essential oil (extracted from the peppermint plant) are often included in beauty products. The reason for this is because they contain antibacterial properties and menthol, both of which help to cleanse, tone, and moisturize the skin. The vitamin A and salicylic acid in peppermint essential oil helps to control sebum secretion, and this is beneficial for people with oily skin. Mint’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties also help to reduce bacterial build-up, decreasing the development of blemishes. One of the best health properties of peppermint essential oil is that it works to tone and hydrate the skin. Similar to cucumbers, this oil is mildly astringent, which helps to keep the skin supple and smooth.

DIY Cucumber Mint Sugar Scrub

This sugar scrub will last a lot longer if you store it in the refrigerator. The cold temperature actually helps it thicken up, but it applies easily when you massage it into the skin. While the peppermint essential oil is diluted, be sure to do a batch test on your arm or hand if you have sensitive skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup cucumber, sliced
  • 3/4 cup organic white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons virgin coconut oil, melted
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil

Instructions:

  • Add the cucumber to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Pour the blended cucumber into a bowl and add in the sugar, coconut oil, and essential oil. Mix everything together and then transfer to an airtight container.
  • Store the sugar scrub in a cool, dry place, or in the refrigerator. Use two to three times weekly.
