The Bitter Truth About Salt

Salt is a drug and unnatural. Chemical salts are carcinogenic. Table salt leads to health problems, high blood pressure. http://dherbs.com/uploads/news/id4832/alg-salt-shaker-thumb.jpg
Salt is a crystalline mineral mainly made up of sodium chloride. Salt is used as a seasoning in foods and a preserving agent.

Humans also have a innate taste for salt. Our taste buds identify six major tastes, including salt. When we taste a food containing the mineral, our taste buds send a signal to the brain labeling the taste "salt".

Sodium, Salt and the Body

Sodium is a required mineral for bodily function. Sodium is one of the eight alkaline minerals and one of the 102 minerals in the elemental chart. Sodium can be found in nature. We need sodium for proper health, especially to balance our sodium-potassium balance levels.

It helps us to hold and properly use water, especially in hot weather. Too little sodium can lead to dehydration. Sodium is also important for proper muscle function in addition to stabilizing imbalances in blood pH.

Salt, on the other hand, is not crucial to the body. Salt is largely made up of sodium schloride, so many people believe they need salt. In reality, they need sodium chloride.

Too much salt throws the body out of balance, and can contribute to the development of disease. Some health conditions associated with excess salt include:
  • High blood pressure
  • Fluid retention
  • Red eyes
Adding salt to food in one way people are consuming too much of it. Most of the processed or canned foods today have tons of added salt. This helps preserve the food and enhance the flavor. Some of us add even more salt to the food! The result is often high blood pressure.

Sea Salt

Sea salt is the salt nature naturally produces in water. This is the only salt you should use. Since it is natural and unrefined, it is not harmful to the body. Remember, all salts should be consumed in moderation, like everything else.

Sea salt is naturally brown in colors and somewhat resembles beach sand. It is coarse and comes in a variety of sizes. Three main sizes of sea salt exist: fine, coarse and granulated.

If you have any question whether a salt is natural sea salt or not, remember that all sea salt will dissolve in water.

Natural Ways to Maintain Sodium Levels

Celery is one of the best natural ways to consume sodium. The vegetable helps lower blood pressure as well. Juice or eat the vegetable raw for the maximum health benefits.

Maintaining a balance of sodium and potassium in the body can be done very easily too. Drink a glass of water with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Drink this everyday for the best benefits.

Remember that diet ultimately determines health. Consume a healthy plant based diet to keep your body functioning as it should. Avoid added synthetic salt and instead focus on wholesome, pure flavors.

Q: Thanks for the great web site! MY question is what's the best way to get sodium. I thought un-refined sea salt was the best, but the salt article says "eat this salt only if you must." The great thing about pure sea salt is that it all or almost all the minerals the body needs! So what's the best way to get all the mineral and to stay in balance? Also is there a way to get Epsom salt that is sodium sulfate not magnesium sulfate? Is it a good idea to bath in the "good" Epsom salt.

    A:

    You're welcome, Beloved!

The best way to get sodium is via vegetables (i.e. celery).

Sea salt is great source of sodium, but its a secondary source as it has to be processed from ocean water. Absent the process, it would not be available.

But it does provide minute amounts of trace elements.

In re Epsom salt, I haven't been able to find the sodium one.

I stopped using Epsom salt many years ago.

You could bath in the good Epsom salt, but sea salt is far better and more natural.

Q: You are way off in the use of Salt. Like anything, salt can be over used. Where did you get your research to back up your claims?

    A:

NO MY FRIEND, IT IS ONLY YOUR OPINION THAT I AM WAY OFF ON SALT. CHANCES ARE YOU CONSUME SALT AND THUS DEFEND WHAT YOU CONSUME AND/OR LIKE TO CONSUME, BUT TO EACH HIS OWN. IF I AM WAY OFF ON SALT: SIMPLY PROVE IT! I AM ALWAYS OPEN AND AVAILABLE TO DEBATE YOU WHENEVER YOU ARE READY TO DEBATE ME ON SALT OR ANY HEALTH OR MEDICAL SUBJECT UNDER THE SUN. SEE, HERE'S THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LOGIC AND MINE. YOUR ARGUMENT IS THAT SALT CAN BE OVER USED. YOU ARE FOCUSED ON "OVER USE." MY ARGUMENT IS THAT SALT IS A DAMN "TOXIN" AND "POSION," PERIOD! BECAUSE WE ARE DEALING WITH POISON, YOU DON'T OVER USE POSION NOR DO YOU UNDER USE POSION. THE INTELLIGENT THING TO DO PERTAINING TO POSION IS TO OUTRIGHT AVOID IT. THIS WOULD BE COMMON SENSIBLE BUT THEN AGAIN, COMMONS SENSE IS NOT SO COMMON TODAY. DOES IT REALLY MATTER BASED UPON THE ABOVE? MY RESEARCH RESOURCES ARE VOLUMINOUS. THE FACT OFTHE MATTER IS: SALT IS A TOXIN AND THERE'S NECESSARY RESEARCH TO PROVE IT (LIKE I DID IN MY ARTICLE). YOU WILL NOT FIND WHITE TABLE SALT IN NATURE. IF IT'S WHITE IT ISN’T RIGHT, PERIOD! THIS INCLUDES: WHITE FLOUR, WHITE RICE, WHITE BREAD, WHITE EGGS, WHITE SUGAR, AND WHITE SALT.

Q: Do cigarettes contribute to the bitter smell and taste of vaginal secretions? What else contributes to that?

    A:

Yes, cigarettes contribute to vaginal discharge. Anything that is consumed that is UNNATURAL and have no business in the human body (i.e. meat, dairy, drugs, chemicals, etc) contributes to vaginal discharge.

Q: I have a question reguarding the anti-viral cleanse. Do we need to use 1-2 boxes of sea salt for each bath? Please help me to understand.

    A:

The sea salt soaks plays another major role in detoxing your body. We suggest using 20-30 ounces of sea salt in each bath. Depending on the size of the sea salt you purchase you don't have to use all of it for just one use.

    A:

I approve of apple cider vinegar for health purposes. Some good stuff!

Q: I started the full body detox today, and found that I DO NOT like the salad dressing I made with the olive oil, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I found I could not tolerate it on my salad. What can I do instead? Another question is... I noticed lentils on the food combining chart. Those have to be cooked. Are those actually allowed to be consumed warm? I love the raw fruits and vegetables. I don?t have a problem, cause I love salads. I just need help on what I can have on it.

Q: I am 66 yrs old and have multiple health problems-HBP, Diabetes and depression. I weigh 240 lbs. and want to get down to at least 190 or lower. My skin at this time on my arms and stomach looks awful. When I lose the weight which I intend to do with your help. Is there anything you can do to help tighten your skin as you lose weight. Remember my age.

    A:

Thanks for the question! That is a very good question at that.

To avoid loose skin from weight loss the best thing you can do is lose weight slowly and efficiently. Healthy weight loss is around 1lb to 2lbs per week. Your body always seeks balance and does not respond well to rapid weight gain or loss. Hence the stretching of your skin. It takes around two years for your stretched skin to return to "normal" so be patient. Losing weight fast is a goal most people have and you hear stories of people losing 10 lbs a week and believe that is the way to go. Considering your age it's best to take things slow. Besides not losing weight too rapidly, here are three other tips for keeping skin tight.

    1. Switch to a high raw food diet. Raw food diets are often referred to as "Facelift Diets". People who eat a majority of their food raw (60% plus) look younger than most because of the high antioxidant and phytochemical count in raw plant foods. I have seen hundreds of raw foodists lose weight and cellulite at the same time. Raw food helps the body stay hydrated, refreshed, and repairing rapidly. Fruits are my favorite skin food. Avocados, coconut, bananas, peaches, tropical fruit, grapefruit, berries, etc are all potent skin renewing and correcting foods.
    2. Hydration is the key to elastic skin. A simple test to see if you are hydrated is to pinch the skin on the top of your hand for two seconds and then releasing. If the skin snaps back you are hydrated. If it slowly pulls back to position you need to hydrate. The best way to hydrate is to drink two glasses of room temperature water as soon as you wake up. As maintenance drink 8 ounces of water every two hours. Remove or lessen the amount of dehydrating foodstuffs like coffee, tea that is not herbal, table salt, animal products, artificial sugars.
    3. Take care of your skin now by exfoliating daily, doing salt scrubs, using non toxic and natural beauty products. A rule of thumb is "if you wouldn't put it in your mouth don't put it on your skin". Your skin has a direct pathway to your blood stream so be careful what you put on it. I use coconut oil on my skin daily as a moisturizer and that is it. My skin has never been better.

Lastly, with your health goals I recommend you have a free online consultation with me. I run a six month health coaching program over skype that teaches a system of health that empowers people to take control of their own health by teaching them all the tools to get their. Some of the lessons in the course are alkalinity, 60-90 percent raw, detoxing and cleansing, juice fasting, plant based beauty, intro to stress relief and meditation, etc. My clients get the results they desire and get healthy for life. To get a free consultation with me fill out the health history form found here: Health forms . I look forward to hearing from you. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Q: This is my 3rd day on the cleanse. Last night I woke up around 2:00 am and I couldn't rest because I was having cramping in my thighs and buttock area. It was uncomfortable. I got up and stretched, walked, took a epsom salt bath. Finally after 3 hours I was able to rest. When I went to work when I am actively moving around I am fine. But, when I sit for any period of time my leg and buttock cramp. What suggestions might you have? I am pleased with the cleanse, but I would like to remedy this uncomfortable feeling. I have increased my H2O and potassium through eating more than 1 banana. HELP!!!!

    A:

Sounds like a circulation problem! Start getting up to move around or stretch every 15-30 minutes! be religious in doing this!

Sounds like you also need more potassium too. One banana isn't going to get the job done. You need to eat at least 5 bananas for minimum potassium. Otherwise, start taking 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water (with a pinch of sea salt added to it) for minimum potassium.

I would also recommend that you get a massage, preferably therapeutic deep tissue massage. Call Riann at (213) 220-0961. She's good, economical, and travels!!

Q: What Can I Do To Prevent Leg Pain?

    A:

Leg pain may denote a mineral deficiency, most likely potassium defiency. Eat plenty of potassium-rich foods (bananas, apples, etc.) or consume 3 capsules daily of POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE and add 1 teaspoon of Bragg apple cider vinegar to a glass of drinking water daily. Perform the FULL BODY DETOX periodically (every 3-4 months). Other good Dherbs.com products to take for prevention/healing of leg pain include MSM SULFUR, HEADACHE AND PAIN FORMULA and NERVES FORMULA. A good read is our MENTAL SCIENCE MANUAL e-book which helps you get your mind involved in your prevention and healing of disease and problems.

Q: Hey herbalist, so I have been doing a lot of research on caffeine, and the benefits and harms of it. I am looking for some added information about the differences between the caffeine found naturally in coffee or tea, and the kind found in pure caffeine pills. I have heard that the pills are much more harmful, but have not been able to find proof of why. With the exception of "its made in a lab, therefore it must be worse". If you could shed some light on the matter, I would greatly appreciate it! Just one more question. I have read that caffeine blocks the re-uptake of glutamate. This can cause glutamate toxicity (resulting in dead brain cells), but I am skeptical as to how often this occurs. Will that happen if one takes just 200-mg of caffeine? Is it for the chronic caffeine users who drink 6 cups of coffee a day for 10 years? Thanks so much for your time and effort! looking forward to some knowledge!

    A:

Nature does not make caffeine or any substance in mono-structured form, including caffeine. Caffeine consumed by itself is harmful (a la caffeine pills -- nature does not produce caffeine pills). Caffeine pills are INORGANIC and thus not absorbed by the body (the cells). Bio-caffeiene from plant sources is ORGANIC and thus absorbable. Organic substances can be absorbed through the cells. Inorganic substances cannot. Inorganic caffeine blocks reuptake of glutamate, and that's another reason why synthetic caffeine is harmful. Organic caffeine does not block reuptake of glutamate.

Q: I want to start the raw food diet, but do not want to lose weight has i am under weight already. I need tips to gain or at least maintain my weight. I do lift weights as part of my exercise routine.

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

Losing "weight" on a raw foods diet is a definite probability. But the weight might be excess fat and water retention due to detoxing. By weight I am assuming you are talking about muscle. It is not that complicated to keep muscle while on a raw food diet. The Vegan Effect diet program I created is 60-90 percent raw. Raw before dinner if that helps. I allow myself one cooked meal a day. For the most part the diet is a Low fat/high carb/high fruit/high alkaline diet.

The most important thing to remember is getting enough calories. My athletes (including raw body builders) typically eat 1000 calories of fruit for breakfast in the form of a green smoothie. Usually post workout. You need to eat roughly 3000 calories to maintain or grow muscle mass. Some of my mass building athletes eat as much as 5000 calories. Albeit at a higher fat ratio than our standard 70/10/20 carb/fat/protein ratios.

Please refer to my blog on building muscle ona vegan diet found here: http://the-vegan-effect.healthcoach1.integrativenutrition.com/blog/2012/05/building-muscle-on-vegan-diet

There is a raw organic food bar with 22 grams of protien that can be found here http://www.organicfoodbar.com/products/. *Note: I am not affiliated with them nor do I sell any supplements*. It is however a great bridge to meals.

Besides getting enough calories make sure you are getting around 20 grams of protein 5 times a day to maintain muscle mass. Sprouting beans, nut butters, seeds, and nuts help.

I run a 6 month online health coahcing program that includes lessons on sports nutrition and include a individualized fitness plan. I am currently running a ridiculous half off special to fill spots. If you are interested visit www.theveganeffect.com and contact me there.

    Hope this helps

On July 10, I was called into the office of Constant Kargbo, under-secretary general of Disease Management Programmes and Operations for Sierra Leone's Red Cross Society.
