Moringa

http://dherbs.com/images/dherbs400x400.jpg
Moringa or Moringa oleifera is a miracle tree that grows wild in tropical and sub-tropical areas and is native to Africa, Arabia, India, the Caribbean and Pacific Islands. It is cultivated in Africa, India, Sri-Lanka, Mexico, the Philippines, South America, Malaysia, Jamaica, Thailand, the Middle East and several other countries. India is the world's leading producer of Moringa.

Moringa is known as the "gift from God" tree, mother's best friend and miracle tree of hope. It is drought resistant and can grow in nearly any soil. However, Moringa grows best with heat and sun. It does not tolerate coldness and frost.

Benefits

Moringa is loaded with nutrition. Moringa leaves consist of many sources of nutrients including beta-carotene, Vitamin C, iron, potassium and digestible protein. They are loaded with medicinal and therapeutic properties.

Along with Spirulina and hemp seed, Moringa is a food that can help to end world starvation and malnutrition, especially in Africa. By eating highly nutritious Moringa products and foods, starvation and malnutrition can be eliminated throughout Africa.

Uses

Moringa ranks with hemp as one of the world's most useful plants or trees. Nearly every part of the tree can be used for food purposes. This includes green pods, seeds, leaves, fruit, sap, flowers, bark, roots, gum and oil. Rarely is a whole plant or tree used for food and/or medicinal purposes.

Moringa leaves can be eaten fresh, cooked, or stored as a dried powder for many months and without refrigeration and/or loss of nutritional value. Moringa leaves are cooked similarly to spinach leaves. Sometimes they are dried and crushed into a powder to be used in variety of soups and sauces.

In Siddha medicine, Moringa seeds are used as sexual virility agents. More specifically, they are used to treat penile erectile dysfunction in men and to help prolong sexual activity in women. Siddha medicine is one of three forms of medicine used by Indians.

Moringa seed enriches mother's milk and helps increase the birth weight of the baby. DHerbs encourages the consumption of Moringa during pregnancy. The Moringa seeds are used for a potent and effective galactagogue, an agent that increases the quantity of breast milk.

Nutritional Content

Moringa contains more calcium than milk, more Vitamin A than carrots, more Vitamin C than oranges, more iron than spinach or red raspberry leaves, more potassium than bananas and apples and more protein than egg or milk.

According to recent studies, Moringa contains the amount of calcium equivalent to four glasses of milk. Moringa also contains sufficient amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Potassium, Iron and Protein.

Moringa is one of the best vegetarian sources of protein. Unlike cooked meat, Moringa can be digested and absorbed by the body. The protein that is found in Moringa is 100% complete protein.

Moringa tree bark is rich in calcium and phosphorus while Moringa flowers are rich in potassium and calcium.

In some countries, Moringa seeds have been used to purify water. In fact, just a teaspoon of crushed seeds can be added to a gallon of water to purify it overnight.

Medicinal Properties

Moringa seeds contain a compound called benzylisothiocyanate that is highly effective against fungi and bacteria. It is used as a pesticide and herbicide is also used in pharmaceuticals. The compound benzylisothiocyanate is believed to be better than isothiocyanates.

Moringa root contains a compound, Spirochin, which is an effective analgesic. The compound can lower or raise heart rate depending on the dosage. It has also been shown to reduce fevers.

Q: I am looking for foods that will help to burn and speed up my metabolism. Also foods that are comforting. I have a problem with constipation please help in that area also. Thanks

    A:

Thanks for the question.I will answer the constipation question later. Here are five foods that will naturally speed up your metabolism. The more efficient your metabolism the more efficient your body will burn fat. Who doesn't want that?!

1: Grapefruit. Due to it's high alkalinity and high nutrient density it is a great food to rev up your metabolism. Have you heard of the grapefruit cleanse? It works! It's possible it works because you are consuming less calories and fat. However, I feel it also helps the body stay alkaline and allows your body to shed fat.

2: Spices, especially cayenne pepper! All spices and herbs have an alkaline effect making them super foods for weight loss. One Canadian study found the use of spices enabled people to burn up to 1,000 more calories daily than those not incorporating spices into their diet. Cayenne pepper can raise metabolism up to 25 percent in another study.

3: Apples: Apples have 80 calories in them. It takes nearly 100 to digest them. What does that mean for you? that you are getting a ton of nutrients while getting negative net calories. Sounds awesome to me! Also studies have shown that women who eat three apples a day burn more calories than those who didn't. Consider pears in the same category.

4: Leafy greens including green tea. Green tea has special metabolism boosting powers. That why you see the green tea extracts everywhere. However, the extracts do not work. There is something special about using the whole food. You need synergy and so does your food. Spinach, kale, collards, etc are super healthy (what a revelation!!) metabolism amping powers. Obviously are negative calorie foods that go along way.

5: Seeds! Add seeds to greens, smoothies, salads, or just about anywhere. All seeds are potent but the ones that we are talking about here are the tiny ones. Flax, chia, hemp, sesame, etc. They all have wonderful balances of essential fatty acids and in nature the best way to break down fat is with another fat.

    Hope this answers your question.

Q: What foods are ideal for vegans that weight train?

    A:

Thanks for the question Rick. Here are three ideal foods for those who weight train.

Oatmeal: 1/4 cup of oats yields 7-8 grams of protein. Imagine eating a whole cups worth. That's 28 grams!!! Now what if you soaked them in soy milk. Add another 8 grams. I usually do my oatmeal with soy milk, a tbsp. of ground seeds, tbsp. cinnamon, tsp. nutmeg, tbsp. maple syrup. The long burning starchy carbohydrates are perfect muscle building fuel! Also you get the anti-inflammatory spices that help recovery time and oxygenate the blood!

Spirulina: Spirulina is a superfood that boasts a large amount of amino acids that are hard to get in the plant world. Find a green powder with spirulina and watch the muscles grow! A greens powder is also alkaline and aids in recovery.

Tempeh: Tempeh is a fermented soy/rice product that is super nutrient/protein dense. 1 serving has 20 grams of protein in it! I would flash fry strips in coconut oil, season, and use as croutons in salad.

I hope those three options help you and feel free to ask any more questions you have. I am currently coaching raw vegan bodybuilders and other fitness athletes on my health coaching program. Q: I am listening to you on Rainbow soul talking about cellulite and stretch marks and it sounds as if you have just given up on the black female race like there is no help for big women.

    A:

Dherbs.com: I haven't given up on big Black women at all. The fact is that most big Black women BLACK discipline and will not do what is necessary. The simple fact that they blew up in the first place says a lot (i.e. poor self-esteem, low self-image, unhappiness, undisciplined, etc.)

That is another story though cause I'm not big AT ALL!! but I am a black female.

Dherbs.com: I'm writing an article soon on Black women and obesity: causes/origins, dangers, and solutions. Now does this sound like I have given up????

ANYWAY - my question to you is - Since January 8, 2007 I stopped eating meat and I saw a tremendous result in my complaint areas.

    Dherbs.com: Good for you!

Now I'm pregnant and read that protein develops the babies brain so I started eating meat until I have the baby.

Dherbs.com: LORD HAVE MERCY!!!! I greatly disagree with this, but it's your choice. I have 3 vegan-vegetarian children. Their mothers didn't eat meat during their pregnancies. You don't have to worry about the development of your baby's brain. The body intelligence has that covered. Meat is not protein unless you eat it raw (but the WHOLE animal must be eaten)!!!

Is it safe to drink protein shakes to replace the protein instead of eating meat?

Dherbs.com: You can't get bio-protein from protein shakes. Protein shakes are made from waste products (i.e. radiated soy, whey, etc.). If you really want natural proteon, check out our Bio-Protein we sell. It's 100% all-natural. But remember, protein is in every natural food you eat. How do herbivore animals in the wild get their protein since they don't eat meat???

Meat for protein is a great conspiracy and propaganda tactic. Read Dherbs articles "PROTEIN PROPAGANDA" and "THE DANGERS OF EATING MEAT."

Regardless of how you view me, thank you for your interest in Dherbs.Com!

Q: I recently asked you about using protein to gain muscle and u suggested Bio-Protein powder. But when I researched the ingredients I know little of, I was astonished at this African plant. The findings are amazing lol. Man, where do u find this stuff? Lol from east Indian herbs, Asian and African...top notch products, keep up the good work! Side note: I found a product called ultimate meal replacement...equally amazing. Let it up and tell me you think.

    A:

Beloved! Yes, the Moringa is the bomb plant that is working wonders in Africa and also worldwide, especially for purposes of nutrition. I found herbs through my passion and deliberate intent to find and possess and USE the best, the most exotic, and most potent herbs around from all countries of the earth. I have been blessed to find and obtain 99% of the herbs I looked for and desired/desire. I'm still waiting to get my hands on the Tabernanthe Iboga plant that is the best plant on Earth (from Africa) in kicking drug addiction, especially for melanated people (African/African-American). The U.S. government currently has the plant banned because it would interfere with the systematic drug trafficking industry instituted by the U.S. government which helps raise revenue and create a myriad of criminal statutes in which to justify locking up people, especially poor, disenfranchised people (so-called minorities, especially Black people). But that won't stop my creation of a Substance Abuse Kit and Regimen to help people get off of drugs (illegal drugs).

Ultimate Meal replacement???? You don't want to replace a meal. The opposite of a meal is a non-meal. Regardless of what it has in it, it can never replace sitting down to eat a healthy and balanced meal. Stick to a real meal that you devise consisting of prepared earth foods and use Ultimate Meal Replacement as a supplement, so to speak.

Q: What happens when you eat cooked foods on the Full Body Cleanse? It will be very difficult for me to do this for 20 days as I do not frequently eat raw foods.

    A:

Cooked foods slow down the healing process. When you eat cooked foods it taxes your imune system and forces your body to work harder digesting and spend less time cleaning.

That being said. Here are some quick tips to eating more raw foods.

Fruit smoothies or green smoothies are perfect in a pinch. The travel well and can be really filling. here is how to make a smoothie.

    Liquid: 1-2 cups water

Base: Bananas 2-6 or 6-8 dates

    Antioxidant: cup of berries

(Optional)Greens: cup of baby spinach or other greens

Large salads with sprouted grains or legumes

Always keep fruit on hand (natures fast food) Non sulfured dried fruits work as well.

Q: I am on my 3rd day of the fully body cleansing. I am definitely doing this to lose weight. I am a 52 year old, black, Christian, wife, mother to 21 and 14 year old girls, legal secretary who is 450 lbs. I am to the point now where if I don't do this I'm going to be housebound. I can barely move some days that is why I started this because I feel so unhealthy. I have a question about the nuts. I got all gun-ho and ordered $135.00 worth of organic nuts from nuts.com. I got raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, pistachios and cashews and mixed them all up together (well I purchased 2 lbs of each but I only mixed up 1 lb of each together). Anyway, I was reading about how much calories are in nuts. Should I not pay attention to that because I was consuming a lot of calories in the first place or do I have to watch how many nuts I eat? I have put some nuts in a sandwich bags and basically filled it up and that is supposed to be my nuts ration for the day. I am also eating fruits and vegetables. So far the fruit have been grapes, grapefruit, red apples, pears, green apples and bananas. The vegetables have all been in a salad: tomatoes, celery spinach leaves, carrots, mixed in balsamic vinaigrette. I only ate the salad Monday night all the other times I have just eaten the fruit and nuts. I am also consuming approximately 75-100 oz of water. Sorry I’m long winded I just wanted you to get the entire picture.

    A:

Thanks for the question, I can definitely help you.

I am currently writing an eBook for www.dherbs.com called "Losing weight the healthy way." I have been a weight loss counselor for many years. I am also a health coach, personal trainer, bodymind nutritionist, and a vegan lifestyle coach.

When it comes to weight loss most programs want you to lose weight to get healthy. My mindset is to get healthy and lose weight.

In my health/fitness/nutrition coaching program www.theveganeffect.com I use a lowfat/high carb/ high raw/ nutrient dense/ high alkaline diet to achieve long term weight loss success. So far I am 100 percent in getting clients long lasting weight loss. If you are interested in my program please fill out the health history form on the side of the web page. We could have a free 1 hour initial consultation over skype to see how I can best help you.

Nuts are best kept to a minimum if you use them at all. Nuts are extremely high in fat and have the opposite omega 3- omega 6 ratio that is optimal for health. Seeds are best as far as ratios are concerned. Also nuts are truly easy to over eat and cause your nutrient ratios to be off.

A healthy vegan diet is a high raw fruitarian diet.

    Example:

Breakfast: green smoothie. (500-1000 calories of fruits blended with a handful of greens and water)

Bridge: Dates and strawberries (500 calories)

Lunch: Salad with low sugar fruits (cucumber, tomato, squash, bell peppers) topped with fruit, beans, psuedo grains,

    Bridge: 2-3 apples

Dinner: Raw wraps (collard greens) with low sugar fruit and tahini

    Snack: Sorbet

    Hope this helps

Q: Thank you for always answering my questions. I have about two more. Okay, I'm currently living overseas where I'm limited on raw fresh foods (vegetables and fruits). I want to do the detox but I'm concerned that I won't have everything as far as raw food to be successful. I have access to basics (apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, avocados, melons, lettuce, cabbage, bean spouts, carrots, celery, peppers, green beans, peas, bagged nuts,) but nothing exotic by any means. Then I was told to safely eat some of the food in the local economy that we should wash it with a 5% bleach solution (is that safe...and if on the detox I'm thinking that would be a no go). Two questions?Given the mentioned availability of raw foods could I be able to successfully complete the detox (I don't have an issue with eating the same things over and over again) and two what can I do to clean local produce so that its safe for consumption? Apparently part of the issue is that they use human feces to fertilize. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response

    A:

Of course you would do well and have success on the FBD with the foods that are available to you. You have the right spirit and mindset! GO FOR IT!!!

Q: Do hemp seeds help bodybuilders gain mass or will they simply work as a rebuilding supplement?

    A:

    Thanks for the question,

The answer is both. In different ways. Hemp is of course a great source of fat. It has a tremendous ratio of omega 3s to 6s. It helps rebuild muscle because it is anti inflammatory, It helps build muscle by being 33 percent protein by content and a great source of calories for fuel. It's probably best to take hemp seeds, protein powders, butters, oils with greens to enhance bio-availabity and useability. I use hemp seeds in my green smoothies and use a variety of other small seeds in my meals. I do not use oils of any kinds and nut/seed butters occasionally. I prefer not to use hemp protein powders just because I find them gritty in shakes and not the best tasting. There are plenty of other raw protein sources I find more palatable.

I run an online health/fitness coaching program if you are interested and am running a half of special at the moment. You can find more about the program at www.theveganeffect.com. I coach raw body builders if you are interested.

Q: I am 66 yrs old and have multiple health problems-HBP, Diabetes and depression. I weigh 240 lbs. and want to get down to at least 190 or lower. My skin at this time on my arms and stomach looks awful. When I lose the weight which I intend to do with your help. Is there anything you can do to help tighten your skin as you lose weight. Remember my age.

    A:

Thanks for the question! That is a very good question at that.

To avoid loose skin from weight loss the best thing you can do is lose weight slowly and efficiently. Healthy weight loss is around 1lb to 2lbs per week. Your body always seeks balance and does not respond well to rapid weight gain or loss. Hence the stretching of your skin. It takes around two years for your stretched skin to return to "normal" so be patient. Losing weight fast is a goal most people have and you hear stories of people losing 10 lbs a week and believe that is the way to go. Considering your age it's best to take things slow. Besides not losing weight too rapidly, here are three other tips for keeping skin tight.

    1. Switch to a high raw food diet. Raw food diets are often referred to as "Facelift Diets". People who eat a majority of their food raw (60% plus) look younger than most because of the high antioxidant and phytochemical count in raw plant foods. I have seen hundreds of raw foodists lose weight and cellulite at the same time. Raw food helps the body stay hydrated, refreshed, and repairing rapidly. Fruits are my favorite skin food. Avocados, coconut, bananas, peaches, tropical fruit, grapefruit, berries, etc are all potent skin renewing and correcting foods.
    2. Hydration is the key to elastic skin. A simple test to see if you are hydrated is to pinch the skin on the top of your hand for two seconds and then releasing. If the skin snaps back you are hydrated. If it slowly pulls back to position you need to hydrate. The best way to hydrate is to drink two glasses of room temperature water as soon as you wake up. As maintenance drink 8 ounces of water every two hours. Remove or lessen the amount of dehydrating foodstuffs like coffee, tea that is not herbal, table salt, animal products, artificial sugars.
    3. Take care of your skin now by exfoliating daily, doing salt scrubs, using non toxic and natural beauty products. A rule of thumb is "if you wouldn't put it in your mouth don't put it on your skin". Your skin has a direct pathway to your blood stream so be careful what you put on it. I use coconut oil on my skin daily as a moisturizer and that is it. My skin has never been better.

Lastly, with your health goals I recommend you have a free online consultation with me. I run a six month health coaching program over skype that teaches a system of health that empowers people to take control of their own health by teaching them all the tools to get their. Some of the lessons in the course are alkalinity, 60-90 percent raw, detoxing and cleansing, juice fasting, plant based beauty, intro to stress relief and meditation, etc. My clients get the results they desire and get healthy for life. To get a free consultation with me fill out the health history form found here: Health forms . I look forward to hearing from you. Let me know if you have any more questions.
