The Dangers of Antidepressants

Antidepressants are mood-stabilizing drugs designed to help alleviate the symptoms of depression. http://dherbs.com/uploads/news/id4498/Fotolia_63313777_Subscription_Monthly_M_thumb.jpg

Antidepressants are mood-stabilizing drugs designed to help alleviate the symptoms of depression. But the symptomatic relief comes at an extremely high price-not just in terms of money, but in the toll they can take on the body and the side effects they create.

Types of antidepressants

There are four classes of antidepressants:

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs are designed to help the brain make better use of serotonin, which is believed to elevate or moderate mood. Types of SSRIs are:
    • Paxil, Prozac, Celexa
  • Serotonin-Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). These work a lot like SSRIs, but they inhibit norephinephrine in addition to serotonin. Examples of SNRIs are:
    • Effexor and Cymbalta
  • Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). TCAs slow or prevent the re-uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, which causes increased production of these 'feel good' brain chemicals. TCAs are not the same as SRNIs. Examples of TCAs are:
    • Elavil, Tofranil and Pamelor
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This was one of the original types of antidepressants that had to be taken with strict dietary intake. They were eventually replaced due to the severe side effects that came from taking them. Today, they are a last resort for patients unresponsive to SSRIs and TCAs. Examples of MAOIs are:
    • Parnate, Nardil
There are also antidepressants that don't fit these classifications. They are:
  • Wellbutrin
  • Remeron

Known Side Effects

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), known side-effects of antidepressants are:

  • Headache
  • Night sweats
  • Nausea
  • Agitation
  • Sexual problems
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Suicidal thinking
  • Mania (extreme high and low emotional states)
  • Birth defects
  • High blood pressure

Causes of Depression

The medical term 'depression' derives from a Latin word 'deprimare' meaning "to press down."

Depression results when there is lack of inspiration, optimism, and enthusiasm in life. It is also the result of the spirit being deflated.

People become depressed when hope is lost or perceived to be lost.

People become depressed when they feel lonely or perceive themselves to be lonely.

People become depressed when they don't feel loved or perceive to have lost love.

People become depressed when they don't see a way out of a dark situation.

People become depressed when they don't feel good about themselves over a long period of time.

People become depressed at the loss of a loved one to death.

People become depressed when they don't have any money or are constantly broke, especially women.

Dietary Intervention

Depression can be improved by greatly modifying the diet. A nutrition-rich diet is key.

Lack of certain nutrients that nourish the brain and neurological system must be added to the diet. To make sure the body and the brain are getting certain nutrients that are greatly needed, it's best to eat a diet consisting of various vegetables and fruits, in their raw form but also in the form of herbal extracts, teas, and capsules.

A raw foods diet alone will cause a tremendous positive change in a depressed person. Why? Well, because raw foods are filled with life. Raw foods are live foods and live foods are enzymatic in nature. Enzymes are what give life to raw foods.

Raw foods are a whole lot of wonderful veggies, fruits, seeds, nuts, and grains. Learn more at our "Dietary Choices" Dietary Choices section on our site.

Avoid meat and dairy products as well as processed and refined products. They contain many harmful chemical additives that impair the brain and nervous system.

Avoid all chemical sweetening agents: sugar, saccharin, aspartame, Nutra Sweet, Equal, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, dextrose, Ace-K, etc.

Avoid all beverages that contain the synthetic amino acid 'phenylalanine.'

Avoid all commercial brand energy drinks, i.e. Red Bull, Full Throttle, etc.

Avoid all alcoholic beverages: beer, wine, champagne, etc.

Drink plenty of good water - distilled, spring, or alkaline water are best! Alkaline water is best!

Avoid chemical and pharmaceutical drugs, especially antidepressants. Antidepressant drugs such as Prozac, Celexa, Zoloft, Lexapro, Sarafem, Zyban, Luvox, Wellbutrin, Effexor, and Serzone to name a few have ended up as prescriptions for millions of Americans, including the late great pop icon Michael Jackson.

When antidepressants are consumed with painkillers, the body's internal organs may stop due to an organ-stopping effect of serotonin syndrome.

Q: I just stopped taking my medication for high blood pressure (10mg of Lisinapril) about a week and half ago. I started your regimen of Circul-Aid Formula, Cardio-Vascular Formula and celery everyday. Will there be any after effects from my taking prescription medication for a long period of time? Are there any other healing regimens I could undergo along with the current (i.e. cayenne/garlic)? I did the Full Body Detox in January (excellent), and plan on undertaking that regimen again in July. My only concern was the lasting effects of the medication. Also, the article on High Blood Pressure was very informative.

    A:

Drug residues will remain in the tissues for some time. The more you detox, take herbals, and eat raw fruits and vegetables (drink fruit and vegetable juice), drink good water, etc. The faster the drug residues will leave the body. Drugs are not assimilated in the body, because they are not organic, they end up lodged in the tissues of the body. When you take herbs, and eat fruits and vegetables, the tissues are cleansed and that's how the drug residues are eliminated from the body. You are on the right path, and I suggest you keep doing what you're doing. Don't even worry about the past drug medicine use. Stay in the NOW (moment), and focus on what you desire and you will be alright. A cayenne/garlic formula would aid you. Go for it! Make sure changes are made to the diet because it's the primary factor in HBP along with stress. Check out our "Dietary Choices" section under 'More Services' on the Home Page.
