With the rise of artistic nudity in the US, women are uncovering their physical gems, finding empowerment in their bare beauty and re-connecting with the sacredness of their sexuality. Yet, the stakes are high when it comes to living in a country such as the US that is "founded by puritans, Quakers and other religious zealots!" says Ernest, a facebook friend.
"The values embodied by those founding fathers continue to influence every facet of society! So networks get fined for accidental and momentary exposure of nipples (Janet Jackson) and presidents get impeached for lying about an illicit tryst with an intern (WJC)", he adds.
Then there are the young minds behind social media such as Zuckerburg, the 23-year-old CEO, who claims, "We are God". "We decide what sort of pictures members can post". And there are the common trends of TV ads, billboards and magazines laced with the bodies of women boasting sales and profits for corporations.
In Europe, nudity is no biggie! You'll see naked people on TV, billboards, in magazines and newspapers, and even sunbathing in public parks. Locker rooms at gyms and public pools may be unisex.
Here in the states I walk into a sauna and people are wrapped with towels, dressed in bathing suits while I sit in the bareness of my body. In Germany, instead of covering their “private parts” with towels, they used the little cloth to spare their butts from the heat. In all their naked glory, they sit with their legs relaxed and casually spread. Some even nod, “Guten Tag”. Most Germans have no qualms about stripping down in mixed company.
In Denmark, you can experience the sight of a long stretch of beach full of naked people and this is no nude beach, its a regular one. Parents with their teenage kids; couples doing tai-chi, some playing volleyball or badminton. Would this look normal in the great separated States?
Swedes are open-minded and many like to swim or sunbathe in the nude. Nudism in Sweden is nothing unusual and Swedes make it clear that the purpose of nudism/naturism is strictly non-erotic and non-sexual.
Technically, there is no law against being nude in public in the United Kingdom. Simple nudity is not illegal. However, using nudity to "harass, alarm or distress" others is an offense against the Public Order Act of 1986.
As the US celebrates its 234th birthday, I ponder over the fact that a country this old has neither grown nor matured. In the US the body parts of a woman are marketing tools to expand sales and increase profits. The medical industry and pharmaceutical companies own not only the bodies but also the souls of women.
The essence of a woman's body is a space for manipulation, while people are trained to be ashamed of their bodies, to reject them, and to spend the bulk of their lives altering them to please others.
Have women ever really had power and control over their own temples? When do they have the final say over their bodies? Is it any wonder that many choose not to even LIVE in their own skin?
