I redeemed savings bonds I got around my birth time...   The interest hasnt even doubled...    in 26 years.   Then I got  a "bill" from the treasury department claiming I owe such and such money. Basically ate up a huge chunk of the profit. I don't know why anyone would bother ...not a great investment considering 26 years ago gas was a quarter of the price.

Probrably wrong section for this but is there anyway to defer this payment or stall it.

I know back in 02-03 my father convinced me to buy bonds which I did (if I can remember $500 worth). I remember getting at least $200 back when I redeemed them, but still will say I agree - today this is not a good investment.

US savings bonds haven't really been a good buy in a long while.  IMHO, these bonds are okay for giving to kids in anticipation of using for educational purposes but not for adults.  I purchased one $100 Series EE bond for $50 in 4/1992.  I checked it on Jan. 14, 2001 (I know the date cause I put a sticky on the front of the bond) and it was worth $90.32. I just checked it and it's now worth $128.92.   I have interest of $78.92 because the interest is based on the ending value minus what you paid for the bond.
